My Chronic Illness Story - Living with Kidney Transplant, UC, and Glaucoma
Hi Peter, so sad to read about all the issues you had since a very young age. I'm studying glaucoma in Glasgow, Scotland. At uni we have different teams doing studies on different aspects of glaucoma. Some suggested it could be cardiovascular related. Families with heart disease and glaucoma are at risk, so people in their direct family need to get their eyes checked regularly (every year, or every 2 years) Yours is steroid induced. Any chance you could show us your left eye close-up? I would like to see the sclera and the iris of the eye. Not sure if I could ask you to email me perhaps a very clear photo? Just thought I'd ask. All the best for your future treatments and sending you good vibes. Thanks for your video. 🙏🏻
What do you think of the I Dose implant?
I haven't done too much research on that treatment. However, i do believe is an advanced step in treatment and an excellent option for those looking to lower IOP. it is great for those with open-angle glaucoma. Based on the studies it can last long-term. It is always best to consult with a physican to make sure if that treatment is suitable for your eye as it does come with side-effects of eye redness, itchiness, and blurriness.
I am allergic to the preservative in the eyedrops for glaucoma. None of my PF eyedrops are covered, and they are very expensive. The sad part is that the FDA knows that with the advances in sterilization that we have now, there is no reason to continue putting “Clorox” in the eye drops. What do you think?
That is great thought. Due to the fact there is advanced in sterilization it causes the price gauge in the all these PF eye drops. The more advanced something has become the more costly it is to get it which is why you see some PF eye drops cost alot more. It is always the better and healthier alternatives that cost more and are harder to get with insurance. Everything easy to obtain always cost less but has greater significant on us long-term. I personally think are taxes should go into more medical related to help disbaled and people with chronic illnesses, so that everything is more affordable for us on prescription medications. We do have alot of advanced sterilzation but now with 2025 we need to find cheaper ways to obtain sterilzation through R&D. The government is always against us disabled and chronic illness individuals even though they say to they are helping.
Thank you!
Thank you! It really means alot to me! You don't know how much the little words mean.
I love your videos! Thank you for sharing the knowledge you’ve acquired through this journey! God Bless you!
Thank you! I will be returning with more videos next week. Took a 3 week break to give myself some mental break.
Wow! You are such an inspiration! Thank you!
Thank you! I really appreciate it. My goal is to give hope to others.
Good luck my friend. I have had glaucoma for 25 years and up to about five years ago treated it with drops. The drops stopped working and I have had stents in both eyes, three shunts in left eye, and one shunt in right eye. Most recently I had the third shunt in left eye last week and I am slowly getting better but the vision is blurry. Vision has been blurry in left eye for three years now and doesn't get any better. I am 20/40 in right eye and 20/60 left eye at last office visit. I still work only because I see pretty well out of my right eye. Doctor tells me I will eventually have to have another shunt in the right eye. I'm running out of room for shunts in my left eye since I've had all the surgeries. Lots of scar tissue. Not sure what's on the horizon after this. I try not to worry about it. I pray for healing for you and me too and all the others in our predicament.
That is what I am afriad of. I already have two shunts in both my right eye and left eye and scared to get my thrid shunt if ever needed. The fact you say that there is no room left for shunts and so many scar tissues is what makes me worry because i am only 25yrs old and have glaucoma since i was 14 and i do not know either what the future holds for me.
Peter, Thanks for sharing your experience. I salute you in turning your experience into something postive and potentially helping others.
I really appreciate that! It means alot to me! My goal is to give tips and help others. I know we all have glaucoma through other causes but it someone way we all have emotional symptoms that are the same and i want to be able to help others cope with it and make sure people feel safe.
Please investigate Eye Track Advance canaloplasty
Will do!
When my son was 6 months old, we discovered that he had glaucoma. At that time, his eye pressure was around 25-27. He underwent a trabeculectomy, but it didn’t help much. For a year after the surgeries, we continuously applied eye drops, but his pressure remained around 22-23. After a year, the pressure in one of his eyes spiked to 30. That’s when Ahmed Valve implants were placed. On the day of the surgery, his eye pressure was nearly 40. They performed laser treatment on the eye with 40 pressure to lower it slightly, and the Ahmed Valve was implanted in the other eye. Two weeks later, the eye that had the laser treatment also received an Ahmed Valve implant. For a year, these implants maintained a pressure of 9-10 in his eyes. After a year, one of the eyes started showing increased pressure again, so we began using eye drops. Currently, we are maintaining a pressure of 9-12/13, and we hope it stays this way for a few more years because it was very challenging for him to resist rubbing his eyes and to adapt to living with glaucoma. In reality, Ahmed Valve implants do help, but their effectiveness is short-lived. After about 4-5 years, they start to lose their functionality.
Sending you love ❤
Thank you!
Great Video, Keep it up bro

Please continue your efforts it's great
Thank you! It means alot that you are supporting! I will keep continuing.
So true, I am emotionally killed due to my lost vision in my left eye..I try not to think about it but it’s impossible…I used to play sports and cannot…my left eye is blind.. and my right eye thank god is still good as long as I keep using my drops 2 to 3 times a day..then my pressure will stay at 20 to 21..and with glasses I still see 20/ 30.. thank god….left eye pressure is 10 to 11 and the eye is blind it sees only shapes and shadows and doc estimates it to be 20/ 1000, uncorrectable by any kind of lense.. due to a botched trabeculectamy…please dear god if ur doctor wants to do a trabeculectamy…run away, u will lose your vision immediately…at least with glaucoma untreated u will have 3 years of good vision before it slowly leaves you..
The mental health is really scare and it's the untold part of Glaucoma. I always think about my future of when my vision in both eye will be completely gone. Waking up from seeing things to not seeing anything. Being able to not drive anymore, not play sports, not hangout with friends. Basically can't do anything independently. I am only 25 and that what freaks me out.
Normal pressure is 11-21..according to “ Dr Elisabeth” channel…please guys don’t get a shunt or stent put in your eye , called a trabeculectamy, unless the doctor is very very very competent…In the hands of a incompetent doctor, the trabeculectamy will cause blindness 90% of time…I know…also look into some of the MiGs surgeries..such as Omni or canaloplasty…Less chance of going blind with the MiGs surgery, …MiGs only reduce the eye pressure by 6 to 8 points, but then you use drops in conjunction and now you have 12 points reduction total…good speed and good luck…
i feel alot of surgeries in general have a side effect of going blind. The surgery is just a higher chance to save your vision and give you less pain from the eye pressure. For me, I do not know whether i would get another shunt since im already on 2 in each eye, but I know for sure I don't ever want laser. Plus, as you say it's is important to have a competent physican.
The thing I noticed about the eye drops is that even if u use eye drops 3 times a day for say 60 days the Most reduction I would get would be 6 points of pressure…so my right eye had a pressure of 27 and with the drops it went down to 21..which for me is good..now the left eye is a different story…it had a pressure of 42..and after 2 months of drops 3 times a day , pressure went down to 36..but vision still ok, just a tiny bit blurry due to the high pressure…Doctor performed a trabeculectamy ( putting a stent in the eye), IOP immediately drops to 9 to 10, and here’s the kicker , the trabeculectamy caused to to go 80% blind and doc says “ oh, well these things happen”….now I am depressed…
Yes eye drop medications can only do so much. I am on 4 different 4 eye drop medications and a pill to maintain my eye pressure.
I’ll toss in my 2 cents..I am 65 with glaucoma in both eyes…my right eye had a IOP of 27, my left eye had a IOP of 42..So doctor puts me on pressure reducer drops for both eyes 3 times a day…so after 3 months of drops my right eye IOP is 20 and my left eye is 34…so then doctor recommends surgery for left eye…he performed a trabeculectamy…putting shunt in the eye..and a bleb at top…well guess what?…now I have a new set of problems….my new IOP in my eye is 8…and the eye has lost 80% of vision for distance, and lost 80% of closeup vision..Basically my left eye is now blind because of the trabeculectamy!!! All my doctors says is “ that’s the risk of this type of glaucoma surgery..I have since researched this surgery and see on most websites, that the patient usually does lose their pre op vision with a trabeculectamy…and most patients take 2 years to even gain 70% of the vision they had prior to surgery…I am so depressed now that I have lost 80 % vision due to a procedure called a trabeculectamy and my doctor didn’t warn me at all…
I totally can relate. I had laser done to reduce my IOP and that caused my to lose parts of my vision and caused me to have cloudy vision in my right eye. I am legally blind in my right eye. I hate that we went that route of laser just cause it did more harm than good and it only lasted 4 months till i need surgery. The surgery I got was baerveldt shunt surgery. This wasn't too bad for me. My vision slowly did come back after a while but the clodiness and visionloss from the laser never came back.
Same happened to mum her iop got higher right after laser my her sight lower to 5 and she's still suffering she already lost sight of her left eye.
So here’s an update.. Around thanksgiving I had the Ahmed FP9 valve installed.. brought my pressure down from a 32 to a 10 or 12..but very very poor vision ..like 20 / 800 that was uncorrectectable with any kind of lenses..so my doctor agreed to take it out and go back to eye drops…took out the Ahmed valve and now am blind at 20/ 1000, with uncorrectectable vision….
@@joelb099 i wish you a quick recovery never lose faith
Anything you would recommend for a person who has eye pain routinely and feels the high pressure in their
Eye/ eyes
For someone with eye pain if not the eye drops helping to relieving it. 1. ice your eyes (it sounds strange but cooling it helps) 2. Compression and massage (put palms of hand slowly compressed on eyes but not to the point where it hurts and slowly go in circular motion). this helps alot for me 3. take a nap or sleep (it may be hard with pain but itll relieve it once you asleep)
Great video bro. This can really help me
Thank you, If you want more please let me know and I can make more at the gym instead of home.
You dont get red eyes from eye drops? I use ganfort and cosopt and i get ret eyes. Like vains gets visible in the eyes
Yes, my eyes get very red. From the cosopt and latanoprost. Some people have asked if i have been smoking marujauna just by looking at my eyes.
I just bought a device called nanodropper. It reduces the eye drop by 70%. So maby the red eyes will decrease. I hope so
Loosing vision loss? Get your vision checked. Go to an ophthalmologist not an optometrist. Follow the instructions from the doctor. Take your prescribed medication. Get a second opinion when needed. Live a healthy lifestyle if possible. That helps prevent all illnesses.
love the tips, Peter Lim! We need more workout videos like this

How old were you when you first found out that you had glaucoma?I couldn't imagine losing my vision, seeing that I'm so reliant on it.
I was 14 years old when I was first out. Top it all off I caught at a late stage. It's one of the worst things you want to happen. Always take care of your vision.
Hi I'm form thailand, I had a badminton accident and hit my eyeball 3 months ago, resulting in high intraocular pressure. The doctor diagnosed that I would need to take medication for the rest of my life because of Angle recession but I still didn't have glaucoma. I'm currently on Brimonidine and cosop drops (only at night) IOP 17-19. Do you have any recommendations? for long-term adjustment after this Because I'm just 28 years old
Recommend: Stay on top of your eye drops. Wear protective eye wear if you plan on playing sports), make sure to get plenty of sleep, and especially don't stress as that will increase IOP. I am thinking about visiting Thailand myself. Would love to chat.
What was the Laser Procedure Performed , if you can share ? Thanks
I had SLT done
I was diagnosed with glaucoma January 2024. I don't feel any symptoms at all. I just had blurry vision on my left eye whenever I'm stressed thinking about things. I walked 30 minutes when my vision gets blurry then automatically get back to normal. I don't feel pain on my eye at all but I still decided to have an appointment to a doctor though my blurry vision doesn't really affects doing everyday chores, then the doctor said that I had an open angle glaucoma and need to be on eyedrops treatment (latanoprost, dorzolomide timolol and brimonidine). As soon as i use eyedrops that's when I slowly started loosing my peripheral vision and taking eyedrops for a month doesn't lower my IOP so the doctor suggested me to undergo surgery (Phacoemulsification/March 25). My vision got narrowed when i used those eyedrops but after the surgery my vision got wider again and back to normal even my peripheral vision improved, I may say about 70%. Then after 7 months of surgery I noticed that I again had blurry vision and it's getting worst to the point that I can't read anything using my left eye literally. Went to my doctor again said that I had PCO which really common after a Phaco surgery and the blurry vision that i experienced is caused by cells that remain after surgery growing on the lens capsule, making it cloudy and affecting vision and all we need to do is to undergo a YAG treatment. I was scheduled January next year to undergo YAG and keep praying to God to guide my doctor to successfully do the treatment. Glaucoma is not a joke and we should comply to any treatment advised by our doctors. NO cure for glaucoma and any damage done to our optic nerve was irreversible. Glaucoma gives me anxiety and depression beyond what i expected. I never been so worried in my life before i had this. Thinking about getting blind and not able to see the beauty of this world is something I don't want anyone to experience. But there's still hope. We just need to accept God as our savior and life's pilot. Let him be the Captain of our plane. He won't lead us astray. He answered our prayers in a way that we don't even noticed. With God nothing is impossible. Just trust Him.
May prayers go to you. I hope all your surgery goes well in January and that will set you up for a strong 2025. Glaucoma is not a joke and I try my best advocate as much as I can. Vision is the most important thing and without it, we can't see the beauty of life.
@@itspeterlim We are one in this battle Brother. I also hope you get better sooner. And to everyone who was in the same situation regardless if it's glaucoma or anything. Remember you're always not alone. God will and always will be with you. He loves you. He will never leave you. Trust your life to Him then let Him do unimaginable miracles to your life.
@ thank you. I pray everything will be best for everyone with glaucoma. As you said we are one and the same battle.
Eye stem cell is very good but not need to do right now if presser too night- Stem cel not allow in USA may be somewhere in Mexico, Thailand,Swiss Medica clinic in Russia ….
Yes, stem cell is allowed in USA
I'm curious. I've used eye drops in the past (not for glaucoma), but how do cold or refrigeratored eye drops feel on the eyes? I somehow imagine that they feel a bit soothing, lol.
It feels nice! The cold drops give a cool feeling since our eyes are always being used and overworked and having a cold drop soothes our eyes. You should try it with just normal tear drops!
I have a question. As the development of your glaucoma originated from using prednisone, what treatement do you currently use for your kidney diease now? The reason why I ask is because i use prednisone on and off, and I wonder should i stop using it altogether forever.
Sorry for the late reply. I currently still use prednisone still and it will be forever for me.
hey quick question how long were you using steroid for your liver ? my doctor told me I am a glaucoma suspect ( no glaucoma yet ) and I have a gum problem in my mouth and my dentist wants to use a steroid but I've been doing research and saw that any steroid is bad for eye pressure long term . that's why im asking how long were you using steroids.
It was my kidney, not my liver lol. As for the usage of steroids, I was on it for years which led to steroid-induced glaucoma. However, I do take a minimal dose of steroids now to maintain my kidney function. It all depends on the dosage though. Usually with steroids medications like pills if they start you off high you slowly taper off. It will elevate the pressure short-term but it shouldn't cause significant damage if you don't take the steroid too long and it's not a high dosage.
Hey man, thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I’m 35 and have congenital glaucoma since a kid which luckily had been stable until recently when I had to undergo an operation for a detached retina a month ago which gave complications with the eye pressure, so I will need to have the aqueous shunt surgery in a couple of days. To be honest I was very nervous as to getting it done, but hearing your experience has given me reassurance it’ll be ok Thanks again so much man and hope all goes well for you
I am so glad to hear my video was able to help give reassurance. Hope everything has been well for you since those years. If you ever need someone to chat to I am here.
Thanks very much Peter! I had my eye shunt op a couple of weeks ago now and recovery is going well so far. My eyesight isn’t 100% back to how it was but it’s manageable
@@AngusMcMaiden89 That's is awesome to hear. I am glad the recovery is going well. let me know if the shunt eventually opens around the 4-6 week mark.
I am having glaucoma over a year, it changed my life, I can't drive anymore, I am having a cloudy and dim vision, and I guess I will have to live with it rest of my life, so depress.
I totally understand, that is why i try my best to advocate to others with vision to get their visions checked. Because I feel like their is a point where i won't be able to drive at all. Luckily, i can still drive as long as its not dark.
Also what is the exercise at 3:55 called?
it's called wall tricep extensions.
What other bodyweight triceps exercises do u recommend?
For my bodyweight (these are all head above hips btw), tricep dips, can be done with a chair or on the floor. I also recommend side-lying tricep push. You can do overhead extension with a backpack or a light object as well standing or seated. If you want tricep exercises where you have your face down, which will increase IOP a bit. I recommend push ups, tricep extension. I will make a video on thus. If you want it to be more focused on head over hips please let me know.
@@itspeterlimyeah i would prefer a video more focused on head over hips
@@caspar-brawl I will note that down for this coming week video!
@@itspeterlim how many times a week should I exercise a muscle group
@@caspar-brawl Depends how sore you are after each workout. Usually for someone who is hasn't worked out at all I recommend each muscle group once a week. Muscle takes up 72 hours to recover, but it may take longer on how your body reacts. The more your muscle gets adjusted is when you can start doing each muscle twice a week, but just make sure to space them out where they get time to recover. For example, if you have a leg day on Monday , I would wait till Thursday or any day after that. You can always combine muscles groups to keep your workouts short for the week and make it 3 times a week. What are you more interested in? A full body, each muscle, muscle together.
Impressive video, Peter Lim. Looking forward to seeing more content from you. I smashed that thumbs up button on your upload. Keep up the fantastic work! Your insights on how to manage workouts with glaucoma were really enlightening. Have you considered discussing how different types of exercises might impact intraocular pressure in varying individuals?
Yes, I will discuss different exercises as some exercises can exert more pressure. If you have certain exercises please let me know. Thank you so much for watching as well. I truly appreciate it.
What if i don't have glaucoma does b3 have any effects for someone with weaker vision?
Yes, if you don't have glaucoma and would like to take Vitamin B3 (Nicotinamide) it can still be beneficial for those with weaker vision. As Vitamin B3 acts as a precursor to NAD+ which improves DNA repair and eye protection. Thus, means it can treat macular degeneration and retinal damage. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5419856/
I think that the correct form of vitamin B3 for glaucoma treatment is Niacinamide (nicotinamide), not Niacin. Very good video: ruclips.net/video/Ev0cQlPps0Y/видео.html&ab_channel=GlaucomaUK4
Thanks for the video! Yes, Nicotinamide is the correct form.
Thank you for your honesty. I Came down with Uveitus back in 1998. I have been on glaucoma eye solutions and I have gotten Uveitus episodes every 3-4 yrs. I currently had been free of high pressure with the eye medication but in May 2024, I had an outbreak of Uvietus and was placed on Prednisilone but it's been 6 months and I have not been able to taper off the prednisilone. Today, my opthomologist offered the shunt surgery but I am concerned for the problems afterwards. I had a botched surgery to repair a hiatal hernia 10 yrs ago and it has caused permanent damage. $150,000 does not equal the damage they caused. The laser surgery to releave the pressure seems much easier for me. That shunt surgery looks very complicated and there are lots of possible problems. I know you did not like the laser. Thanks for your video.
I am sorry to hear you are still on the Prednisilone drop. Long-term that can do damage as your ophthalmologist may have told you. For me the laser botched my eye and made it fuzzy in my right eye that is why I just prefer the shunt. However, as in your experience, it is different. Hopefully, you are able to get the best solution for your eyes. I wish you all the best!
Thank you.
You are welcome!
God bless you.

Google glaucoma and nicotinamide or vitamin B3. There on-going trials with this that look very promising.
Hii! Thankyou for this video. I have severe dry eyes and I went to the doctor about a few months back, he said everything else was okay, he prescribed me eyedrops from my dry eyes, however I also see alot of Starbursts in my vision, as well as halos around lights, floaters, glares, which are some symptoms of glaucoma, the doctor said that I just have a cylindrical curvature in my eye which is one glaucoma related factor, but he said it's normal and might just be a genetic issue, the doctor said that he's 95% sure that i do not have glaucoma, I took high doses of vitamin d and vitamin d injections because of a bone related issue I had earlier. I'm always so stressed about my eyes :( because the dry eyes won't go away and the Starbursts just never improve. Did you go through any of these symptoms I have? I would really appreciate a response. Oh and also I'm 16.
So sorry to hear that. I have dry eyes as well due to glaucoma drops and sleeping with my eyes slightly open not fully closed. My doctor didn't prescribe me any eye drops to moisture but they did tell me to get hydrating drops especially preservative-free drops as those you can use more frequently than normal hydrating drops that are you typical max 4 to 6 times a days. Right now, I used Refresh PF hydrating drops nothing expensive as I don't want to break the bank I bought it for Sam's Club. As for the halos and starbursts glares, I don't get those as often as I used to. However, I do get floaters occasionally. I can't really do anything with the floaters as I just try my best to ignore them.
Staebursts, halos around lights, floaters and glares are not symptoms glaucoma. They are symptoms of progressive astigmatism.
@@kitzune_gp They are considered early signs of Glaucoma. Here is a Cleveland Medical Clinic Article showing early signs of Glaucoma with no optic nerve damage: my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/4212-glaucoma However, you are correct they are also symptoms of astigmatism. The main thing is to always follow up with your eye doctor as they know better and can physically see your eye.
@@itspeterlim Hi. Thanks I will read up. I'm at risk of glaucoma but also have terrible astigmatism. It's so bad I can't drive at night due to star bursts. I did do a check up and the ophthalmologist said everything is stable. Mostly the floaters, star bursts and glare is an issue for me. Best of luck for you.
Good info🎉
Glad you were able to take it.
Please look into the Brooke Goldner diet its said to have reversed glaucoma in a lot of people. It’s not easy though. Eating mostly vegetables uncooked. Intense but very healthy way of life. May God /Allah protect you. ❤
