WHAT IS BEAUTY? Analysis is Socrates' Hippeas Major And A New Definition In A Song
Link to my song: ruclips.net/video/yZeHwsgLLuM/видео.html
What is beauty? Try to define it on your own, and compare your definition to Plato's definition. See if yours is close! In this video, I provide an analysis of every definition of beauty by Plato. I also provide my own definition of beauty. Then, I share a song that was inspired by thinking about what beauty is, and how to define it.
Philosophy aside, for me, beauty is an experience of inspiration. There is a potency of experience that swells into beauty. It's admittedly hard to agree on how to categorize a shared experience. I am still working on refining my definition of beauty and aesthetics.

This has always been one of my favorite songs since first released most only know of it because of Shrek. Even in Shrek it gives a clue about what it's about when it starts playing consider what Shrek is doing at time, sitting at kitchen table alone feeling sad and thinking about Fiona the love he lost. I find it fascinating how a song with rather dark overtones somehow gets turned into this joyous celebration. Lyrics are completely ignored almost every verse is negative in nature, just because presented and sung in positive manor doesn't change their meaning. Religious folks grab onto the Hallelujahs and references to bible characters and hear nothing but the melody and hallelujahs afterwards, but they take it out of context. He is actually mocking religious beliefs The bible characters referenced, David, Bathsheba, Sampson, King Harrod, are used as a metaphor, and the Hallelujahs basically saying Hell Yeah! The phrase about her not caring for music, The BAFFLED KING COMPOSING HALLELUJAH represents an unshared interest, He has a passion for music and is trying to write the perfect song to win her affection hence the SECRET CORD that nobody has used, unfortunately she doesn't care for music which leaves him baffled, so basically they have nothing in common. The part where, YOU SAW HER BATHING ON THE ROOF AND HER BEAUTY IN THE MOONLIGHT OVERTHREW YOU,reference to Bathsheba This represents LUST, he saw her and just had to have her. SHE STRAPPED YOU TO A KITCHEN CHAIR, you have now been domesticated, MARRIED. Well now you have her But, SHE BROKE THRONE AND CUT YOUR HAIR,references Sampson, This means You are no longer in charge she has taken your power and makes you submit to her by DRAWING FROM YOUR BREATH A HALLELUJAH, As If this wasn't bad enough she then cuts you off from the best Sex you ever had, THERE WAS A TIME YOU USED TO LET ME KNOW WHATS REALLY GOING ON BELOW, BUT NOW NEVER SHOW IT TO ME DO YOU, Basically saying no sex for you. ALL HE EVER LEARNED FROM LOVE WAS HOW TO SHOOT SOMEONE WHO OUTDREW YOU meaning is, How to win argument even when wrong by using words that will hurt. I KNOW THIS ROOM AND WALK THESE FLOORS I USED TO LIVE ALONE BEFORE I KNEW YOU, Meaning although it's still the same place he has always known, it no longer feels the same something is wrong. LOVE IS NOT A VICTORY MARCH, ITS NOT A CRY THAT YOU HEAR AT NIGHT, ITS NOT SOMEBODY THATS SEEN THE LIGHT, BUT A COLD AND BROKEN HALLELUJAH meaning, Walking down the isle and being married is not working out,and even though they are together feels alone, should of known better from the start. YOU SAY I TOOK THE NAME IN VAIN,I DON'T EVEN KNOW THE NAME, BUT IF I DID, WELL REALLY WHATS IT TO YOU? He is saying it right here,it not about religion, how can he take the name in vain when he doesn't know the name, doesn't believe in the name and doesn't care if you do. There's a few more versus but this is enough to get what the song is really about, LUST, SEX, POWER, UNSHARED INTEREST, FAILED MARRIAGE, BUT ALTHOUGH IN THE END DID NOT WORK OUT, WOULD STILL DO IT ALL AGAIN.

Point taken. But it sounds as though you did not take the time to fine tune your message. You insult the intelligenge of your audience by rambling on and on long after you points have been made. If you chose to redo this video, you could easily convey what took more than 20 minutes in about ⅓ the time without missing a beat. As for your points made, absolutely, ANY artist's work, requires a double take and a deeper dive to get beyond what it offers to the casual observer. To belabor your point, anyone readiing this is living better than 99.99999999% of the 8 billion people on the planet.

It is one of those things where you sort of kind of had to BE there at the same time it was popular. More modern people probably will never understand how it feels. I love you dude ... BUT .. Comparing Neil Young to Bob is sort of like comparing Kamala Harris to Mary Magdalene. At any rate ... I will still like your video anyway.🥳

How is this analysis when taken everything literally sir. In my own take of this song. I look at it on lense of childhood lovers. Well i guess this is what makes it personal to me too. Moon river, is the setting. The poet is day dreaming, yearning, on a window, looking outside, and what he sees is a moon river, a sad, but dreamy river. Also speaks his own self, moon river is beautiful, but mostly, the representation of the separation or Space between the poet and the childhood sweetheart. Wider than a mile- speaks both the distance of the river to other side, and distance of person to his love. Im crossing you in style someday- someday we will be together. Dream maker, heart breaker- about the love one, they made the dream together, and since they are not together, also a heartbreaker. A broken heart, is a sign of a heart that has been loved. Wherever you're going, I'm going your way- an attempt to follow. To chase, to dream and catch. Two drifters- Currently they are two drifters, off to see the world- They both have separate life, they both tackle life differently. Have different directions. There's such a lot of world to see - there's so many things they have seen separately and will see separately. , they have lot to learn and grow from. They are growing but apart. We're after the same rainbows end- but still they both are chasing best things in life (probably, being together) Waitin round the bend- still about the other side of rainbow, other end of the bend. Hoping they will meet and find each other again. My Huckleberry friend - a do or die friend, a friend closer than a brother. A friend who is a lover. Probably they Are picking Huckleberry while they are children. And that is the best thing they both had. Moon river and me- is facing the reality, he is still just with himself. Him and the space. Him and the separation. Him and his dreams. Him and his yearnings. For me this is the meaning, and when I am singing this, this is what I have in mind.

Leonard Cohen started by publishing several books of poetry in the 50's and early 60's. He was a friend of Canadian poet Irving Layton. They used to spend time together talking and drinking wine and Layton said if you want your poetry to reach a bigger audience, set it to music. He had already won the Governor Generals award for poetry at this point.

We have very different interpretations. I really appreciate the way you explain yourself in the time you put in here. I think the biggest main difference is that Cohen was famous for wearing a blues trench coat. So this is examining the different sides of himself. He's playing both roles here. And I don't mean to sound rude but to critique a master like Leonard Cohen's writing for using the word flake... When I think you missed the biggest part... I had to stop there

his brother/friend is unwell. Going Clear is about a state in Scientology where supposedly you will never get sick you’ll never even need glasses, etc. etc. The processes of Scientology can drive people literally insane. Cohen wrote this when Scientology was at its height of popularity, and so many people believed that they could save the world by joining Scientology and “Clearing” the planet. Crazytown. His brother or his friend who took away his woman, and then sent her back without the pain in her eyes seems entirely selfish and entirely crazy and that’s what it means he’s living for nothing now. He is empty. His famous blue raincoat, by which he was recognized, by which he gathered women and other acolyte to him, torn at the shoulder, like epaulets, are stripped from a former officer in disgrace. Lili Marlene is on no train. Does she even exist?

As other people have mentioned the song is about Edie Sedgewick and how her relationship with Andy Warhol took her down a destructive path to death...but as the song mentioned her past was flawed as well but her well to do family background gave her a false sense of pride and security which ultimately was undone by drugs. She died at age 28.

These comment applies to this era of Dylan. It does not apply to all eras. I heard that Dylan said to Joan Baez: Some day people are going to analyze my songs, wondering “what does this mean?” And, supposedly, he laughed and said: “they don’t mean shit (anything)!” What does a Jackson Pollack painting mean? What “the ghost of Belfast, she violently knits” mean? Nothing! Dylan wants to mess with our feelings -and he’s good at it - not through double-entendres precise, and hidden meanings. One more: “the silver saxophone says I should refuse you.” Dylan is telling me how he must feel. That’s it! Saxophones don’t say words. Again: He does couch meanings in lyrics in later songs, like “Goodbye Jimmy Reed” and many more.

Dylan was lying. He knew exactly what he wanted to say in his music. You don't write "It's all Right Ma" or "Tombstone Blues" or "Desolation Row" and "It don't mean sh**. He put that out constantly like a Squid's ink because he hated people wanting him to explain himself in left brain terms. You might watch the famous Time interview back and forth of 1965 in "Don't Look Back".

Regards "That night that you planned to go clear...Did you ever go clear?", must be interpreted in light of Leonard Cohen's onetime involvement with Scientology. As I understand it, after progressing through multiple levels of Scientology, and spending lots of money by the way to get through those levels, you arrive at the highest level, the state of being "clear". Edit: I see now that others have previously commented on this idea. Thanks to all.

I think the song would have been better had you been correct, but I'm not convinced that Bob Dylan was not just being vindictive. If you go through his catalogue, you soon realize that vindictiveness comes up with Bob Dylan a fair bit, especially in his earlier work.

I’ve been listening to this song for nearly 50 years now (I was 14 when I first heard it and am now 62). I loved it from the first hearing although obviously my understanding and interpretation have changed and deepened over the years. I heard a fabulous version of it by a young Scandinavian woman called Aurora which I think you would probably really enjoy. I initially thought going clear was getting off drugs but I believe it’s a state of mental emancipation in Scientology. I thought the guy was thin with a torn raincoat because he wasn’t looking after himself - maybe he was focusing on spiritual or emotional needs rather than the physical. I feel he restored Jane to herself; with just a “flake” of his life (like a snow flake!) he’d taken the trouble, a deep sorrow from her eyes. Also after her experience with him Jane could own and be her own self, she know no longer defined herself in relation to men. I find the thin gypsy thief quite mysterious and powerful, slightly shamanic even - mystics often retreated to the desert like this guy has. I think LC feels conflicted about him, both bitterness and love he feels - hence writing the latter at 4.00 am at the bum end of the year. I could write about it for ages! Thanks so much for your interesting discussion of this wonderful Cubist song! Don’t forget to listen to Aurora!💚🐦‍⬛

Thank you very much for such an insightful comment! I also did a cover of one of Cohen's songs here that you might like: ruclips.net/video/JxNvStex5kA/видео.html - would be curious what you think

@@touchedbyasong I really enjoyed your interpretation of it. I always felt it had the atmosphere of a hymn when sung by LC and I liked the harder, almost rock vibe you gave it. Am not sure but I think it may have been written by Buffy St Marie rather than LC himself. His has been the only version I’ve heard apart from yours. Nick Cave has written some beautiful songs over the years. He’s also done a cover of Avalanche by LC which is worth a listen - even darker than Cohen’s imho. So pleased you liked Aurora! Got to go now but will subscribe and get back to you with some Nick Cave songs you might like.
