So I have a bag idea/design, but how does one figure out the template? Is it just trial and error?

This is a great pattern and walkthrough to understand joining panels for pouches. When I first started (and even now) I found doing anything gusseted EXTREMELY difficult. This takes some of the complexity out of it. Ended up lining the back panel with loop velcro to put magazine/ifak inserts in as a sort of tactical fanny.

Great video. Only suggestion is I would reverse the order of the chapters. First time I did this I wished I made the side stoppers before attaching the panels

I made this without the zipper using a 1" overlap on the two front panels. Works great!

I've been trying to design one like the Saloman pulse ( and there are others like that). It seems to be pull on but I like the idea of having a fastener. I wonder if the straps to the fastener could be a firm elastic. Your feedback on the water bottle holder is very interesting - I had assumed I would be optimizing pulling the bottle out on the run... but that would definitely be a different design. More to think about and prototype. Thanks!
