I am a software engineer from southeast Michigan. I am incompletely paralyzed and am a full time wheelchair user. I love to craft and find great happiness in sharing my knitting and crochet experiences.
I do talk frequently about different accessibility issues that I run across while crafting or during life in general. I like to share the perspective of a wheelchair user just to give others ideas about things that might cause difficulties.
As for crafting, I love a challenge and I am not afraid to journey off the beaten path with my crafting. Watch as I make mistakes, learn and grow in creating garments with yarn.

Emotional Support Chicken! | Knitting and Crochet Podcast - Episode 35 | Diary of a Sweater Knitter
I can't wait till I have finished my christmas makes so I can start on something new, I am feeling very inspired now 😊
I love that new Joji hat pattern--even though I'm not a fan of cables. I might join in that mitten gal if I make good progress on all my gift knits this month.
I love that you wear a different sweater/wearable every episode. They're all so beautiful
What a fun bunch of patterns! I need to knit faster and sleep less!
I just love your videos! You inspire me. Another awesome video! I don’t want to be entered for the pattern. Just enjoy listening to you.
That means a lot to me, thank you so much! I'm so glad you're enjoying the podcast! 🙂. You should allow me to enter you in the pattern drawing though, I really enjoy when commenters win! ❤️
@ thank you but I have more patterns than I know what to do with at the moment. Have a great week!
I've knit a lot of Joji's patterns and have a lot in my library but I don't think I've ever seen that Always There Cardigan. It's gorgeous and looks like it would be so fun to knit. I'm going to have to go look it up! Thanks for sharing!
It really is a gorgeous pattern! I hope you love it! 🙂 I had a lot of fun making it.
Great content as always. How long do you think your son will be able to wear the Flax for a year or two? My son out grew his clothes in spurts 😂
He's been getting taller lately so with any extra after sleeves, I am going to undo the body ribbing and add some extra length. I am hoping that'll give some extra growing insurance 😂
I love the new intro. I haven’t been knitting much. Instead, I’ve been working on junk journals as gifts.
I am so glad you enjoyed the new intro! This time of year is hard for getting hobbies in. With all of the holidays and gift making and giving going on, it's hard to squeeze in knitting time. Your junk journals are beautiful though, I know they'll be appreciated 🙂 ❤️
I have made a ballet cardigan, the pattern I used for mine is a Jennie Atkinson pattern, it has about 1 1/2 to 2" of positive ease as I wanted to be able to fit a t-shirt, or light weight cotton top underneath. The one thing I would say about the pattern I used is that the sleeves were very long, I'm about 5ft 2" and I had to take about 1 1/2"-2" of length of the sleeves, but the body fitted me well without a lot of adjustment, which means it may be a little short for someone taller than me.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, that's really valuable to know! My arms are pretty short, so I would definitely have to take some length off. I am 4'8 and very short, so I tend to always have to take off some body length 😅
Hi Mandy, you little enabler you!!! Okay I jumped on the colourwork mitten mystery MAL with you 😊 we are finally getting winter weather starting. Oh and maybe the hubby can put studs on your wheels for winter 😊
The mystery mitten MAL sounds like fun! I hope you stay warm, it's time to get out the winter knits! 🙂
Hi Mandy, I love your new intro/outro you did a great job!
I'm so happy you liked it, I've been wanting to change it up for a while 🙂
The Always there sweater is beautiful especially like the color.
I love pink! Joji's sample knit is done in a beautiful hot pink color that definitely inspired mine 🙂
Again lots of fab patterns Mandy. So much temptation! I do like a Caitlin Hunter pattern. I have the Misurina on the needles which I must pick up again xx
Misurina is a pattern I hear a ton about from Caitlin Hunter. Please share it when you pick it back up, I can't wait to see it! 🙂
Thanks for podcasting. Your son's sweater is gorgeous.
Thank you so much! I love how the colors of the gradient turned out. 🙂. Mandy from Mousewitch yarn did an awesome job with it!
It was me who won the pattern it's gorgeous, and I will be starting it soon. X
I am happy that you picked Always There, it's an amazing pattern. I hope that you enjoy it! 🙂 ❤️
O, I can see why your son is so enthusiastic about his sweater ! Those kitty patterns look quite fun, I especially think that my cats would enjoy a felted mouse, so maybe I should give that a try... As for those mittens; I saw it today, and signed up, it sounds like a lovely idea ! And I think you could perfectly well make a pair, if you like the idea as well. Thusfar I only made one pair of mittens myself, so... They didn't really fit, but they were stranded colourwork as well, one size only, and that turned out to be just a tad too small for me. But otherwise I had no problems knitting the mittens, and as you already did so much colourwork, I guess it would be a breeze to you. Although of course I don't mean to add another plan to your already growing pile.. 😉😁
No worries, I have so many plans that I won't even notice another one appearing in the pile 😉 😂
I have the Ashford 24" rigid heddle loom with a stand and I can get my wooden dining chair between the legs of the stand, it is a useful size for both scarves, shawls and things like bags and cushion covers. If you measure the width of your wheelchair including the wheels, that may give you an idea of whether the stand is accessible for you, a narrower loom may mean that you have to move over to a different chair while weaving.
That’s a great point - I hadn’t thought about the wheelchair width. I'm definitely going to do that. I have three different wheelchairs, but I mainly use one specifically when I'm navigating around the house. I've been looking at the 25" inch, but I will definitely take into consideration the width before I decide. Thank you so much for bringing this point up, it was really helpful 🙂
@@mandyvaughnknits I hope you find a loom that you love, I love mine for some of those hand dyed yarns that I find a bit bright, or busy for knitting and I love using my handspun too!
I do dream knitting a LOT. As in, looking at and planning knits instead of using that time to actually knit. I do it with all my hobbies (looking for books instead of reading all the books that are already on my TBR, same for cross stitch, diamond paintings, fabric and patterns for sewing, etc). I think what it is is that the newness factor has worn off for what I'm working on, so my brain starts hunting for quick dopamine in the same realm. So even though I'm not actually doing those, my brain rewards me for thinking about doing them almost as if I actually did them. The Constellate looks really cool. It sort of looks like dip stitch.
I think that's a good explanation of what I feel is happening with me too. Even if I'm not actually starting the project, it just makes me happy to look at new patterns.. Or even crafts 😅. I love diamond painting as well and I do have some embroidery kits that I'd really like to try. I think you're onto something with the dip stitch. The crown is really neat on that hat 🙂
Hi Mandy. I was weaving before I started knitting. I have an Ashford 25” rigid heddle and a stand and I love it. Remind me on a Saturday zoom and I’ll show you some of the things I made. I really need to get back to it so thanks for sparking a reminder. P.S. I love the colors of your ESP chicken.
Oh, I will remind you. I'm happy that you'll share. I can't wait to see! Weaving sounds like such a fun hobby, I think it would be fun to try. I love my ESP Chicken! 😂 The kit named her Dolly Part-hen and I had to buy it just because Dolly is awesome 🙂 ❤️
The fade on the Flax sweater is seamless. It is very nice to see what you are working on. The loopdigan ❤
Thank you so much! 🙂 I'm really happy with how the colors blend together. I love the loopdigan. It's such a cute idea and I was just really drawn to it when I saw it ❤️
knitting furiously at xmas cowls for the grandkids here😂the flax is looking fantastic in the gray black fade❤
Thank you! I bet the grandkids cowls are going to be beautiful and well loved 🙂
That Caitlin Hunter patterns is beautiful! I've signed up for the mitten kal. I think it is small enough that I should be able to keep up. I have finished 10 hats for my grandchildren! Thank you for a lovely podcast.
I'm happy to hear that you signed up for the mitten kal. I thought it was a fun idea and it really is a good size for a kal. It's so hard to keep up with the big projects. 10 hats for your grandchildren is amazing and so sweet 🙂. They are very lucky kiddos!
The always there cardi is a very nice pattern. You should put snow tires on your wheelchair.
😂 Snow tires are definitely a good idea for the upcoming winter! I hope to stay safe and warm inside for a good portion of it though 🙂. I love the Always There Cardi!
@@mandyvaughnknits I agree stay safe and warm.
OMG, your Lace & Fade Boxy is gorgeous!! Those are totally my colours! I've had that in my queue forever and really need to make it! xoxo
Thank you so much! 🙂 The Lace and Fade was a fun knit, I definitely recommend it.
That is so funny about your daughter forcing you to vlog so she could get the gnome. Has she claimed the hat from last week yet?
🙂 Not yet. I have been keeping hats separate from her on purpose, just till I figure out what’s going to the fundraiser. They also haven’t needed them yet this year. I have a feeling as soon as it’s cold enough, she’ll end up with it ❤️
Love the lace and fade boxy! The colors play beautifully together 😍
Thank you! 🙂
Ooh, the Earnest Cardigan though! ❤❤❤
I know! It's so nice 🙂
Your sons flax is stunning, it’s a shame Mandy isn’t selling the gradient sets at the moment (lack of minis due to advent season!)
Thank you! Yeah, I know. It's a bummer that the mini's are hard to get right now. The gradients were great - the colors blend beautifully! 🙂
Not a cat fan but that is so cute, no wonder your daughter wants it. Peacoats and trench coats are examples of double-breasted coats. Lion Brand is usually my go to yarn for larger items because I can’t make a sweater for under $50. I once participated in a make along using the recommended yarn for a sweater about $200! Never again.
Oh, I had a wool peacoat one year and I loved it. Double-breasted really makes a garment look sweet 🙂. Lion Brand has some great deals, especially when their kits are on sale. I love using all of the easy care yarns.
Your (daughters!) cat gnome is amazing 👏😘
Thank you! 🙂
Your cat gnome is so cute, you did an amazing job 😊
Thank you! 😊
Don't you just love when others are excited about the things you're making?!
Yes! It definitely makes me happy when someone is happily waiting for my finished object 🙂
You could do a blue crocus on the winter cat hat~ they can flower early, sometimes even through snowy times. Also, YAY, I won 😃 thank you!! I will contact you via Ravelry
A blue crocus is a great idea 🙂 Thank you and Congratulations! ❤️
Beautiful work
Thank you! 🙂
Lovely episode yet again Mandy. I think that the shawl reference is to do with the collar perhaps. Just doing brioche ribbing on my Go Go Dynamo, hadn’t understood 2 colour brioche sequence until now!
I think you're right about the collar 🙂. The Go Go Dynamo is such a pretty shawl. I bet yours is going to be amazing! Stephen West has some pretty great video tutorials, maybe I can learn brioche from one of his patterns 😅. That way I'll know enough when I get to the brioche hug AND I'll get a pretty shawl out of it ❤️
Your kitty gnome is just the cutest!
I think you mean my daughter's kitty gnome 😂 😉
Your (E’s 🤣) cat gnome is super cute. Maybe a white cat with a red hat would be easier on your eyes?
I really think this cat gnome pattern has some potential. The designer has some adorable variations on her site. There's even one for Valentines day. I feel like I'm going to end up having an army of cat gnomes 😅. I think my kiddo will approve 🤣 ❤️
The double breasted sweater looks like a classic you could pull off forever!
I agree, Joji has some amazing patterns. I wasn't even aware of this one until someone picked it 🙂
That cat gnome 😍😍😍
Thank you! It was promptly taken by my daughter 🙂
I love the colours of your sweater! Beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Weaving looks like so much fun!
I know. I have a friend who made a bag from fabric she wove and ever since my mind has been spinning with how much fun it'd be to make bags 😅
When knitting with back or dark colors I put a white towel on my lap or on the floor in front of me where my knitting meats in the way the background is lighter so it helps to knit/ crochet
That's a great tip - thank you for sharing! That is something that sounds like it'd be a big help, but I would have never thought of it on my own 🙂. The help from the crafting community is amazing ❤️
Thanks for another lovely episode. Your nails look beautiful, and they matched the boxy you were wearing ! You've got very lucky kids, for getting those sweaters. I love how the gradient in your sons' flax is looking. A lot of inspiration again ! The Luftmeer looks beautiful, hadn't seen this one yet, though I've been eying some of Bogdanova's other patterns. I also really liked the Airson Fir and the Earnest cardigan, but I'm not sure if I have the stamina for so much cabling.... As for the 'shawl' tag in the Earnest, I guess it's because of the collar.
Thank you for your kind words! 🙂 I agree with the Luftmeer. There's something so special about it because of the design on the yoke matching the name. They really do look like hot air balloons 😍 The Airson Fir is gorgeous but I only see two options there. Have spot on gauge or have a friend that will fit it if I mess up.. I don't think I'd be able to pull it out if I did 😅
Just up in the middle of our night so popping in to watch through quickly a first time! Love the xmas vibe with the amigurumi cat...the new caitlin hunter Barndance sweater has just been released, now I can go back to bed! G'nite!😋
Thank you! ❤️Oh and thank you for letting me know about the new pattern, I am going to have to check it out as well 🙂
would work for your cat if you put the beads/stuffing in a men’s black sock. That way the stuffing won’t show through and beads won’t fall out. I don’t know about you but I have several mate less socks on the dryer
Using mateless socks is a perfect idea, we definitely have those. I am always amazed at the awesome ideas that people leave in the comments. Thank you so much! 🙂
The kitty is adorable! Thanks for sharing your projects
Thank you so much! I'm glad you're here and I'm happy to be able to share my crafting projects with everyone 🙂
I usually have a few 4" fabric squares for quilts that I turn into a little bean bag if I'm making an Ami or stuffy
I love this idea. They would washable, easy to make and keep all the beads secure. Thank you for sharing! 🙂
The Christmas kitten gnome is so cute! I make a gnome each year in December. I have a cute collection that lives around my Christmas tree.
I love the regular gnomes as well. One of my friend has a really cute collection. I haven't made any yet, but I'm really tempted. I think they make really adorable holiday decorations 🙂
Hi Mandy, that Christmas kitty is so cute! Good luck with all of your knitting plans in the coming weeks. But can I say… your fingernail polish is beautiful! Someone is very talented with the polish. Happy knitting
Thank you Beth! I am using nail wraps 🙂. I have been in a fall mood and I've been having a lot of fun using different ones lately. I have never been into nail care, but my daughter has me hooked. At 9! Go figure! 😂 The knitting plans will hopefully stay on track 🙂
That men's sweater is gorgeous! Thanks for sharing patterns. And you did get a lot done on your son's flax. You'll have that done in no time.
Thank you! I'm hoping that's the case. Sleeves are always an adventure, especially with having to change yarns so much. I'll just have to stay on task 🙂
