    Bad rulebook you say. I'm going in blind because I have not seen the rulebook in question but I'll see your Hector And Achilles, and raise you Neuland. A rulebook can definitely have an impact. The rulebook for Neuland is so bad rhat despite it being a decent game I am forbidden to bring this game to the table.

      Haha that's good to know. I've always wanted to play Neuland and never had the chance to play. I'll keep that in mind if I ever play it!

    It almost feels like they had a great idea with the rondel system here but nothing to attach it to. Everything else is pretty plain. There's definitely enough game here that I would happily play it if someone brought it out but I don't know if it would sustain my interest after a few plays. I would definitely like to see the rondel idea used in other games either as is or with another twist. Who knows, maybe some of my game design ideas will bear some fruit now that I'm retired. I'll see what I can come up with from this idea.

    • @undiscovered_games
      @undiscovered_games 5 часов назад

      That would be amazing if you could make that rondel have some more depth supporting it in the rest of the game. You're right, the rest is somewhat plain, but like you said, it's worth playing just for that mechanism. The game was super cheap so it was worth the price of admission. But I can't say it's a must own.

    Im thinking of sleeving dominion i have 5 expansions, my reasons are because the starting 10 cards get worn, would like to hear any opinions on this?

    • @undiscovered_games
      @undiscovered_games 8 часов назад

      Thanks for posting this! I'll let others chime in who have experience with Dominion sleeves. Here are my 2 cents: Personally, I never sleeve my games because I cannot stand how it feels. But I certainly agree the starting cards can start to wear faster than the other cards. So I just bought a couple copies of that yellow "base cards" box, which will last me forever. That is my advice if you prefer _not_ to sleeve. Another thing to keep in mind is sleeves _might_ not allow the cards to fit in the slots. I am not certain... just a thought I had.

    Favorite 2 player area control game? Naturally the first game that comes to mind is Go. 😊 Okay, that was a bit tongue in cheek but seriously it's an amazing game which I thoroughly appreciate but its hard to find a playing partner at the same level. I could see getting very interested in this game but for now Babel used to be my favorite. I now prefer Riftforce instead. Also want to send a bit of love to my favorite area control game but its best with 4, never 2 players. That's Power Grid. Another 2 player area control that looks interesting is Ave Caesar but I haven't had the chance to play it yet. (Edit: Oops, that should be just Caesar. Ave Caesar is a racing game)

    • @undiscovered_games
      @undiscovered_games 8 часов назад

      I go back and forth for my fav 2p area control game. Currently, I'm really liking Dynasties/Sun Tzu. But I also think Kahuna is fantastic. The cardplay is a lot of fun in both of those games. Caesar Seize Rome in 20 Minutes? That one is a very solid game, but the graphic design really bugged me in that one. I ultimately decided if I wanted something similar, I would just play Knizia's Samurai at 2p. But Caesar is a super elegant area control game for 2p. The system works really well & it's a very snappy game...often less than 20 minutes in my experience. Plus, Paolo Mori is a great designer!

  • @grantfraser5430
    @grantfraser5430 2 дня назад

    This looks quite good. Great idea for a different take on worker placement. I'm trying to imagine how well balanced the game is and wondering if lucky or unlucky card draw could be problematic. Was there a North American distributor? I might be interested in picking this up but I doubt I will be able to find a copy. I think could do without the screens though. I really dislike hidden trackable information. This is what I love about your channel. This game is worthy of exposure and yet there is no known video excepting yours. How do I support you without credit cards or PayPal?

    • @undiscovered_games
      @undiscovered_games 7 часов назад

      This game is quite unique. I believe there was only 1 printing of this in German. There are a few copies floating around on eBay for pretty cheap. Obviously your card draws can be somewhat lucky at times, but the flexibility of being able to combine the cards helps with that. Also, the quick pace of the game makes the luck factor not a big deal for me. I kinda wish it was in a smaller box, because the game is quick and feels like a filler. I appreciate your kind words and wanting to help the channel. The paypal link only allows paypal and credit card payments. I also accept Super Thanks on RUclips, but I'm not sure how that works. It's below each video, there's like a heart icon with a thanks... sometimes it's in a dropdown menu. Honestly, it is a big help just watching & commenting & getting some others to subscribe! I'm glad you're enjoying the content!

      Hey, thanks for the question! Did you catch my recent 2-player episode? Episode 48 has a game called Shanghaien which is a really fun dice game for 2p. It’s different from this but it’s a great game. Most of my gaming is at 3-4 players, so we just don’t play a lot of games at 2p. But I do try to make 2p-game episodes periodically. The closest game to Tonga Bonga that I can think of would be Jamaica, as I mentioned at the end of the video. That game plays 2-6p, although it’s better with more than 2. But it might give you a similar feel to this one. Hope that helps!!

      Haha that’s interesting! I didn’t know Hidden Gems disagreed! Were they talking about the old version or this one? I wonder if there are any big differences between the old version & this one? I know they changed from a square grid to a hex grid. I actually went into this game with low expectations because of how light it is. I did not expect to like it this much. Interesting. I think 1st edition Seaside has some of my least favorite cards - Lookout (get unlucky, have to choose between trashing your golds and your provinces) and the three really brutal attacks (especially in 4-player) of Ambassador, Sea Hag, Ghost Ship. Gotta give it up for Smugglers and Caravan, though. There's no dominion expansion without cards I love, even Alchemy has University and Apprentice. I think I will get Menagerie next because I love the Way cards so much, but I'm torn, so many of the new expansions look great to get. If only Empires had some other mechanic in place of debt.

    • @undiscovered_games
      @undiscovered_games 4 дня назад

      Thanks for the comment! As you said, every box has some great cards and some cards I don't like. Hence, I can't allow myself to get rid of _any_ of them haha. I personally really like the brutal attacks you mentioned 🤭 but I can totally understand those aren't for everyone. Since making this video over a year ago, I think I would move Menagerie up in my ranking. Those Way cards are really awesome, and we have been revisiting Menagerie quite often in our recent plays. I might have to make a new version of this video soon because Rio Grande just released their latest expansion Rising Sun (which also has debt tokens, not sure about that... but it does have some other new concepts that sound interesting). We will soon see! Thanks again for the great comment!

    Wow! It's like we've known each other forever. I'm also all about the mechanisms, less about theme. I also own 8 games on this list and had Merlin on my short list for a while but haven't picked it up. Yet, that might change again seeing it on your list. Unfortunately, you've got your work cut out for you convincing me of El Grande. I'll have to take another look, try to see what I'm missing. About Hansa Teutonica, yeah I guess the theme is absent but I'm able to immerse myself in it because I learned some of the back story. Back in the day it was a real entity and for a short while was more powerful than most countries at the time. And the name Hansa persists in modern companies. Have you heard of a German airline called Lufthansa? I forget other examples but I thought it was a fascinating story, recommend checking it out if you have an hour or two to kill.

      That's awesome!! Very interesting info about Hansa Teutonica. I think the theme probably seems absent to me because I have not studied the backstory whatsoever haha. Perhaps I should take a deeper look into it! I also enjoy Michael Schacht's game Hansa as well, so maybe it's time to do some learnin! I bet it would improve the gameplay on both of those games if I knew more of the backstory. Merlin is always the game that surprises most people, but I always stand behind my love for it. To me, it's a _slightly_ better version of Bora Bora because it is less lengthy & less complex. I don't mind the complexity of Bora Bora, but a punishing dice roll in Merlin doesn't seem as painful as it can in Bora Bora. But similar to Bora Bora, you need to spend some turns investing in stuff in anticipation of those bad dice rolls. I love when a game allows you to weigh playing risky to maybe get a leg up on your opponents vs. playing safe and planning for bad dice rolls. Plus, the 2 different area control sections of Merlin get really tense at 4p. Anyway, if you enjoy dice games like we do, I think you'd definitely enjoy it. El Grande has a high nostalgia factor for me. I think I found it back in 2015, which was still fairly early in my journey in this hobby. And we play it so much still, it's hard to take it out of my Top Ten. It's so smooth and snappy nowadays for us. I love that it doesn't take forever to play. Still, I will say El Grande is teetering on my Top 10 because Kreta/Sardegna might very well replace it as my favorite area control game. I still feel a close connection to El Grande, but I _really_ love Kreta. Thanks again for watching & commenting! It's always awesome to find other gamers with great taste in gaming!

    I think empty pile end game trigger = number of players seems like natural scaling. That's my house rule if I'm able to pick up this game. Also, anything wrong with equal turns? Maybe reverse turn order as a final tie-breaker.

    • @undiscovered_games
      @undiscovered_games 7 дней назад

      I really like that idea for scaling the game. Very simple and makes sense to me! I guess I never even thought of finishing out the final round so each player gets equal turns. However, there is sometimes a strategy to be had by ending the game early by emptying out a stack to rush the game end... so maybe that's why the designer chose not to give everyone equal turns?? It would be interesting to try equal turns, though, for sure. Great observation!

    I just found your podcast yesterday, watched all 3 videos on (probably) midsed 2-player games. So many good ones. The only game I have that definitely belongs on your list is Babel but you got that one already. Other thoughts I had were Boop and Kamisado. Both are fairly new. I think Boop is overlooked though. Silly name and it's just tic tac toe with a couple of extra rules. Overpriced and not marketed well. But turns out it's a solid game. Highly recommended for chess players who can see a couple of moves ahead but not 7 or 8 moves ahead. I don't know if Kamisado is undiscovered but it definitely got people looking every time we played it at our games store. I think Revolution of 1828 is great, would love to try it but my gaming partner is more inclined to choose multiplayer solitaire games for 4 or 5 to play with just the two of us. Jambo is a game I would buy despite her disinterest but it's out of print. Who do I talk to about that? Have you done a video of multiplayer games that play best at two players?

    • @undiscovered_games
      @undiscovered_games 7 дней назад

      Hey thanks for watching! I haven’t played Boop but I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about it. Did you catch my video on Stone Henge? It’s Knizia’s version of tic tac toe. Without knowing anything about Boop, I’m curious if that compares to Boop at all? Babel is so cool! Love that one. Haven’t played since I made that video over a year ago 😩 Regarding multiplayer games that play well at 2p, we honestly don’t play a lot of those. Most of our gaming is 4p, and if it’s just my wife and me, we usually stick to 2p-exclusive games. So I don’t know if I have enough to make a list. That being said, we do enjoy Panamax at 2p, which is a heavy economic euro. I also did videos on Milestones and Horus, both of which we enjoy at 2p as well. But I’ll definitely keep that in mind, as I think it would make a great video topic!! Thanks again for watching and welcome to the channel! 🍻

      @@undiscovered_games I will probably watch all your videos over time, slowly. I just checked out Stonehenge but it doesn't make me think of tic tac toe. Interesting game though and I will gather some spare parts or pen and paper it for a try. I have a smart grandchild to use as a guinea pig for play testing. Comparison to Boop. Stonehenge is short and deterministic while Boop can be played defensively to prolong the game. It may still be deterministic but it's harder to see. Both are 100% open information. I wonder if Stonehenge suffers from first player advantage since that player is also first to play their last piece with it being known what the opponent's last play will be. This allows them to possibly claim up to 5 or 6 green circles at once. Wait, no that's not relevant since there are only 15 green circles so the race factor is nullified. I think the biggest difference is claiming of lines in Stonehenge whereas in Boop, it's not over until a person can set up two potential wins that can't both be blocked. Boop is literally a three in a row game on a 6x6 board but several pieces move around each turn so getting three in a row can be tricky. You can even set up two potential lines and have them both blocked in one turn. And to top it off, although you always have 8 pieces you don't start the game with the pieces you need to win with. You have to earn those by getting 1-3 non winning three in a rows first. Or get all your pieces on the board, which is also easier said than done as your opponent ( and sometimes yourself ) are regularly knocking pieces off the board to start over again. Halloween edition recommended since it has the expansion piece but not necessary. In fact, but you didn't hear it from me, Boop can be constructed at home also. The rules say to use the bottom of the box as your board but I never enjoyed that. My conclusion is that there isn't really a comparison, they are two different games entirely. Neither is better, they are both good filler games. Stonehenge is shorter and simpler, probably easily programmable for perfect computer play. I'm curious what that is but that would take some fun out of the game. I think Boop is deeper but I can see it easily frustrating some people also making it harder to get to the table.

    We play a lot of 2 player games, so I very much appreciate this series. The only one out of these I'm familiar with is Dynasties/Sun Tzu. I happened upon S.T. at a great little game shop nearby that has a decent amount of older out of print games. I haven't played it yet, but after researching the game, I knew this would be my kind of experience. All three of the other games shown here look very interesting as well. Since, you haven't revealed the two remaining games that you couldn't fit into this video, and I don't believe you have reviewed them on previous videos, I highly recommend Knizia's version of Carcassonne....The Castle, and a great little card game called Trambahn. Both of these immediately shot up to some of my favorite games after just a couple of plays. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if either of these will be in a future video. 😀

    *RULES WRINKLES!* In Shanghaien, there are 2 things to clarify. First, when I said “switch start players,” I failed to explain _why_ we switch start players. Whoever did _not_ end the previous round becomes the new start player. In my example, red ended the round, so blue becomes the start player for the next round. 2nd is an interpretation of the rules. From multiple great discussions in the comments below, we have established that there is likely more than 1 English rulebook in circulation, which is 1 source of confusion. Also, there are some discrepancies between the original German rules and the English translation. Finally, this game apparently has an online implementation somewhere, which I have not tried. I am not sure which rules the online game uses, but that could also be the reason for some of the differing rules interpretations. 1 kind RUclipsr below commented that the start player is supposed to roll the dice FIRST and _then_ choose the orientation of the cards 1-6 or 6-1. The way I read the rule in my rulebook: It just says the start player gets to choose the orientation, but it doesn’t specifically say “after rolling.” However, it does discuss the card order _after_ it talks about the rolling action. I’d say the way it’s written is very vague and confusing in my rulebook. It should clearly say “after rolling, determine the order of the cards.” Still, after reading the rules again, it seems vague to me. But if you’re supposed to choose that _after_ rolling, that means we’ve been playing it slightly wrong. And I’m not sure how I feel about the start player getting a significant advantage like that. According to another commenter, the German rules state that _each_ player determines the order after their first roll. So the 1 card _could_ be different for each player, which would be super interesting for the tiebreaking rule, and it would also remove the advantage of the start player getting to choose. Finally, another commenter said his rulebook did not explain the purpose of the wooden figure, and also it had a totally different explanation of the tiebreaker/neighboring rule. So in conclusion, read your rulebooks carefully and read through the comments section to see how you want to play the game. I am not sure which way to play is the best (or which way most closely resembles the designer's original intent), so I would encourage you to try them all! Fascinating rules wrinkles!!!! Thanks to all who chimed in!!!

    Another great roundup, UG! Also another timely synchronicity with The Coldness, as Shanghaien has been hot over there recently. I've been playing it a lot lately, and I love it more each time. For another great 2p Schacht, try out Rat Hot! It's right up your alley. One correction I'll point out is that the tiebreaker in Shanghaien is actually number of dice, not pips. Pips are the 2nd tiebreaker. Small issue, but it can make a difference in the low end. I'm also a huge fan of Sun Tzu/Dynasties. The Cousins' War is new to me, but no surprise there considering the newness. Looks really interesting, especially the battle mechanism.

    • @undiscovered_games
      @undiscovered_games 8 дней назад

      That's really weird I just happened to put Shanghaien in there. I wasn't aware you all were discussing it! It was meant to be I guess ha!! Regarding the rule, my rulebook clearly says this: "If both players added the same number of dice to a card, then the player _with the higher sum on the dice added to the two neighboring cards_ receives the card. If there is still a tie, then the card is removed from the game." I don't see anything about a first or second tiebreaker. Maybe I have a different version of the game or something? Might be worth checking into. Regardless, thanks for the comment and for watching as always! I appreciate the support, and that's really cool you know Sun Tzu. Great game! I think you'd love The Cousins War. The bluffing with the dice rolling is so much fun.

    • @undiscovered_games
      @undiscovered_games 7 дней назад

      @@Centerhead haha yeah those wooden figures are pretty pointless LOL. I think it’s fascinating there are so many discrepancies in the rules! Does your rulebook clearly say when/who chooses the cards in the row being 1-6 or 6-1? We had a long discussion in one of the other comments on that! 3 different interpretations: Either the start player rolls 1st then chooses, or the start player chooses before rolling, or each player chooses their own numbers for the cards after rolling. I find all the interpretations to be valid & interesting in their own way. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Worth noting that in Shanghaien, the first player rolls their dice and then decides the direction in which the cards are numbered. Also, the first player in each round is the player who did not end the previous round (it doesn't just alternate).

    • @undiscovered_games
      @undiscovered_games 8 дней назад

      Hey thanks for the comment! You are correct on the start player not alternating back and forth; we play that correctly. In the video, I said “switch start players” because the red player ended the round. But I failed to highlight _why_ we switch start players. So thank you for clarifying that for the viewers. I’ll add a note! Regarding the choosing the card order, that’s interesting. The rule says “the starting player in each round decides which end of the row will be assigned 1.” But the way it’s worded, it’s just discussing the anatomy of the 6 cards in the row and doesn’t specifically say to determine that after you roll. However, it mentions the rolling before it mentions choosing the order, so I think you’re correct. But the way it’s worded, it seems like the text is just telling you the steps of the round, like “roll 2 dice.” And then it goes off discussing the card row. It seems to me the rule should say “after rolling, determine which card gets the 1.” But it doesn’t. Instead, it just starts discussing the row of cards and talks about each card has a number assigned to it. It says that order is determined by the start player. It’s kinda weird how they have it organized. I just always took it to clarify that the start player chooses the order (since the other player lays out the cards). I’m sure you’re correct, though. But that’s kinda weird. That means the start player would seemingly have a big advantage each round, right?? But maybe it’s there to balance out the power of the other player ending the previous round?? I’ll have to try it out next time we play! Regardless, thanks for sharing that!

      Interesting….. the german rules say that each player decides for himself the direction in which the cards are numbered. In my opinion that makes perfect sense, because it adds another twist to the gameplay. This is how we play the game and we really like it🎉
