The Dunnage Garage
США
Добавлен 19 сен 2018
Hello everyone! Welcome to the Dunnage Garage. Since going off-roading with my Step-dad as a child I have been hooked. Jeeping has provided me not only a passion and hobby, but an outlet from life’s many ups and downs. Matt and I have found countless adventures in the garage and on the tail. Whether the adventure is modifying our Jeeps or a bear helping itself to our cooler, we try to make a weekly video to follow our misadventures. I hope that you enjoy the content, and please "like," "subscribe," and leave a comment. Keep the suggestions and feedback coming.

Rimrocker Trail pt 1, We Break Another Camper!!!
Просмотров 2322 месяца назад
Yep, at some point on this mini adventure we break another camper. We talked about how this trail might be too much for our set ups in an earlier video. However, I couldn't get past the feeling of defeat from not making it the last time we tried. This trip Randy, a longtime friend of the cannel was invited to try out his new Jeep. Our group of 3 Jeeps and two teardrops headed off for the advent...

Big Iron Overland Rally Part 2, Big Brutus
I bought a 30ah lifepo4 back 5years ago that will last me 9hours with humidifier use. Lately I got several of the 100ah lifepo4 batteries, so they each would give me 3days with humidifier. I personally find not using the humidifier to not be an option. I imagine on your camper SLA battery, using 30ah is going make a 100ah SLA pretty dead, as it only has 50ah of usable capacity.
WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT
Why not? Thanks for watching and commenting.
Ur welcome but those are nice cars back in the day
Ya those "clap" batteries are a real scam. I used to use my Bluetti 700wh unit but recently switched to a resmed travel cpap and an Easylonger battery which is a nice and relatively small (relatively) footprint. 11 nights is really impressive.
Thanks for reply, sorry it took me so long to reply, I saw that there was a comment, but it wasn't visible. Thanks for your feedback too.
Do you have the adjustable track bar from Steinjager also? Can you do a video of asjustment for the track bar?
@@javierleon5121 I'm sorry, I have since sold the Jeep.
Shit video
Drop in a Terminator AX-15 behind the mediocre Pentestar V6 and the transmission will never give you problems again! It can also go behind an AMC 242ci I6, seamlessly.
interesting, this video was following a 2005 TJ with a 4.0 inline 6. I have not heard of a terminator ax-15, nor have I heard of matching it to a Pentestar. Thanks for the comment
@DunnageGarage The Rockland Standard Gear Terminator AX-15 is a direct replacement for the Aisin AX-15, 5-speed, medium-duty transmission, the New Venture Gear NV3550 5 speed manual transmission, and the NSG370 six speed manual transmission. It will seamlessly install into any Wrangler TJ with the aforementioned transmissions. A special bellhousihg will also make fitment into a JK possible. With the end of OEM parts production for the New Venture Gear NV3550, many do not even repair the once venerable NV3550 and instead choose the Rockland Standard Gear Terminator AX-15. At times, it has also been seen as referred to as the Terminator NV3550. But, I believe that is an incorrect designation. The Terminator AX-15 is made using Toyota gears and synchornisers for continued support for decades to come. This way what happened with the New Venture Gear NV3550 when New Venture Gear met it end, will not happen with the Terminator AX-15.
What spacers did you use?
The owner provided the spacers for the install. I believe they were found on amazon.
The sector shaft brace from synergy has worked wonders for me. Steering is allot tighter as it stiffins up the steering box. For what I have read it should prolong the life of the steering box as well. I guess I'll find out later.
Who Herculesed this thing on here! Lol😂
Great place to camp. Thanks for the trip.
You are welcome, thanks for watching, and taking the time to comment.
Nice site... too bad you decided to wreck it with that light-up ad sign-post.
You don't like my light-up signpost? I use it primarily at expos. this trip took place over Halloween, I had it out for the campground trick or treaters. Thanks for watching.
It was great to tow. Unfortunately this trip didn't allow me to utilize all the flex the new hitch allows. Thanks for commenting.
Looks like a great area very beautiful. How did your new hitch setup work out for you. My trailer has a lock and roll setup on it.
Even the factory service manual tells you to go in through the wheel well.. Yes the fender clips break. They're designed to be replaced, not reused. Way easier. And you don't run the risk of busting clips on your PCM.
Great information, thanks for the comment.
Not sure if you are paying attention to this post anymore, but what is the name brand of the lights?
I found these at a local Walmart a few years back. I do have a set of color changing rock lights I will be putting on a camper in the near future. I'll be doing an install video on them too.. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I have two Jeeps. Both have oversized spare tires in factory location and on factory mounts. 2003 Rubicon. 2016 Rubicon. No hitch extension. Open the tailgate. Pull trailer forward by hand. Attach hitch. Close tailgate. Done!
Thanks for sharing your method! That's a great work-around.. However on both of my trailers I couldn't open or close the tailgate with the trailer attached. That's why I had to also extend my hitch lengths too.
Raise the Jeep spare, ie a true tire carrier... move the low hanging trailer spare or resize the trailer spindle to the same lug pattern as the Jeep and run the same size tire and remove the trailer spare all together. A longer trailer tongue made out of receiver tube would allow you to fine tune the tongue length for both on & off-road situations. some type of articulating hitch is a must for off-roading... Congrats. on a nice looking rig...
@XtremeXJ Great ideas, in my case I did raise the spare tire to fit an oversized tire, it just wasn't enough for the trailer. I would love to swap the spindles to match the Jeep. However, the trailer tires are almost too big at 29" for the trailer. The Jeep runs 35's so a second spare is still needed. Thanks for the comment!
The deal breaker for me is the single axle trailer. A tire failure would be catastrophic. Yes, I have a two axle trailer and had a complete tire failure and never even noticed it until another motorist flagged us down.
@2-old-Forthischet thanks for commenting, for me a tandem axle isn't practical.
E trailer sells a Heavy Duty WDH receiver Hitch by Drawtite for the JKU that is bolt on and quite beefy .it extents further back to help with spare tire clearance.
I'll have to check that out, thanks.
One additional thing I would do is go back to your receiver and have it straightened if it was bent, and reinforce that. There isn't much to receivers anymore and I would just have a welder toughen that up. Just my two cents. Good video pretty informative.
I'm glad you found the video helpful, thanks for the tip. I did check the receiver on the Jeep, it looked to be good.
Perhaps the addition of spring boosters or airbags would help
My issue was the weight bending the receiver extension. Air bags or stiffer springs would help with the rear suspension droop.
After a few years my max-coupler developed a lot of slop in the pivot bolt on the vehicle side of the hitch. It got so bad I stopped using it. The company provided no customer support what so ever.
Sorry to hear about your experience with the hitch. Thanks for commenting.
If you were to take it apart they should have used a bushing. Most bushings are a soft metal and they need to be replaced. The rule is if it needs grease or moves. It's either a bushing or bearings. Play would make me think bushing. Nylon is the fastest wearing bushing style and the easiest to replace.
Putting your added weight behind the trailer axle will solve tongue weight.
We looked at adding a couple of RotoPax fuel cans back there on longer trips.
That's one Way, I might have just moved the pair tire in the jeep up a few inches and gotten rid of the extender . I would have probably found a new location for the trailer spair as well to reduce the tongue weight and increase the ground clearance. But That looks like it worked out well for you being able to open up the back door.
Interesting ideas, they would have worked for relocating the weight. However, when I am on the road, the Jeep is packed pretty tight. Putting the spare tires in the Jeep isn't an option for me. Thanks for the comment though.
@DunnageGarage not inside just reworked the bracket to move it up a few inches and create the room around your receiver.
Nice work!
Thank you!
I drive a half-ton pickup and tow a 2500 lb "squaredrop" cargo camper conversion. I put three 77 lb AGM batteries on the floor of the trailer directly over the axle. The trailer galley is going behind the axle, with the sleeper bunk foward. Even before the bunk was built foward and the galley completed aft, the tongue weight was 175 lbs. That's the most I ever want but the truck can take 500 tongue weight if ever necessary. I hope it isn't. My point is that anything heavy should be mounted as close to the trailer axle fulcrum as is humanly possible, ergonomics be damned. I do have my eye on an articulating hitch setup like the one you show, if only! for protection of the tow vehicle if the trailer were to roll over. When using a conventional ball hitch, a flipping trailer will flip the tug too. Have seen far too many examples of this. Cheers.
Sounds like a great build. Unfortunately, there isn't much room to move things around on the teardrop. But I am doing the best I can. Sounds like you have quite the build going. Good luck, and thanks for watching.
It’s good to see a fellow Nebraskan . I just watched all three of your rim rocker episodes. Would like to run it with my outbound trailer. Keep up the good work. If you decide to run it again or just want to have some company on another get in touch.
It is great to here from another Nebraskan too. At very least we ought to meet up sometime, hit me up. I'll reach out when I plan my next trip.
We live in Omaha so not to far away. Would like to meet up and would be interested in a trip. My wife and I did a mile hi Jeep club all for fun this year and it was a great time. Been thinking about more overlanding vs rock crawling.
@@terrytiemeyer9062 I've started moving from rock crawling to Overland adventures too. As for upcoming events, I will be going to Moore Overland Expo in Springfield Mo again April 25-26, 2025. The rest of the year is still in planning. Drop me an email and ill add you to a mailing list for upcoming events. I have done it a couple of times over the years, and would love to do it again. BTW, we are located in Grand Island, Omaha is a easy meet up sometime.
The pintle hitch has a lot of slop, this set up doesn't. Great question, thanks for the comment.
I've been using a Lock N Roll articulating hitch for years
I looked at that hitch too. Thanks for watching.
So why is this better than a Pintle hitch?
Tighter, less slop, quieter, and [Edit:] more than likely lighter. A pintle hitch coupler, mount plate, donut, can be pretty heavy, at least the ones we were using at work were. Cheers.
It's able to keep the trailer from rolling forward and back when you start and stop. It also has the ability to not slide your vehicle to the side when the play is taken out. My 14k dump trailer slides my truck around when stopping if I forget to turn up the brakes so that the trailer is stopping the truck. And trying to back is impossible when it shifts. Yes I can do it just always have to pull forward when it shifts because most of the time you will not be able to turn out of it.
I had my eye on a $600 setup but after seeing The max coupler for half the price I will pull the trigger on it. 👍
I'm glad the video helped. Thanks for watching.
Very professional great video I'll be a big help Thanks from Peters
Thanks for watching, I'm glad it's helpful. Thanks you for the comment and compliment.

Hey! Just checking in to see how you are doing... I enjoy your adventures so much. Take care!💜
Great to hear from you Rose. All is going good.
Too bad water gets in it in light rain
@@ironwayneify I've never had an issue with moisture. Thanks for commenting.
Helpful, my 2012 is leaking like crazy. Not sure how to tell if the box is bad or if it just needs seals. What did you refill it with? Was expecting red ATF+4.
We just used the factory suggested power steering fluid. Thanks for watching.
I had the similar issue taking my teardrop camper over Hagerman Pass. Broke leafs, wheel fenders, and axle broke off the frame. Not doing that ever again.
Sounds like quite the adventure.
Done the trail 3 times now. I couldn’t imagine doing it with a trailer, only bc I wouldn’t have the patience for it. Take the alternate route when you are trailer free. It’s well worth it and would t go the normal route again
The trailer does change the way you travel. I'm not sure I have heard about an "alternate" route, tell me more.
One of my favorite trails!
This has turned into one of my favorites too. Did I miss anything so far? I am working on part 2 right now. Thanks for watching.
So sad! I still use mine it’s so tiny and much much lighter than my iphone
Good job bud
Thank you.
What’s the distance and what I seen no wiring?
It's a wireless remote. The older m8000 used a hard wired remote that you plugged into the winch. This plugs into the same spot, but with increased freedom from not having a cord. Thanks for watching.
Wow! I literally just passed you guys on highway 70 going into Denver area yesterday!! (9/10/2024)

That's such a great place to display those badges.
Thanks for watching. Yep the rack will hold all 50 states. Almost 1/2 done with this Jeep.
Thanks for sharing. About to tackle on my 2012 rubicon tomorrow!
Thanks for watching, how did your steering box go?
What was the final cost?
@mjcdetroit It's been a few years since I made that video, adding the fork, bearing probably added less than $50 to the clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and machining the flywheel...however the time spent was huge...doing and redoing it as many times as we did.
👍🏻👍🏻
