Hartford's Fifth Avenue: The History and Buildings of Pratt Street, Hartford CT
Pratt Street was once called Hartford's Fifth Avenue because of the many specialty stores that lines this short block. In this video I talk about the history of the street, from its early days as a residential block, through its period of commercial development. I talk about such landmarks as Society for Savings, the now lost Hartford Female Seminary, the reconstructed Spencer House and the many commercial buildings that line the street, built between the 1880s and 1920s. I also mention the development projects that have transformed the street over the years, particularly in the late 1980s.

Просмотров 73921 день назад
During one week in February of 1914, the City of Hartford, Connecticut experienced two devastating fires that gutted Union Station (February 21) and the Auditorium Building (originally called Allyn Hall). Union Station was rebuilt using the same brownstone walls, while the Auditorium was replaced by another theater. #fire #burning #hartfordct #hartfordct #trainstation #trainstations #disaster #...
Bear in my Backyard Leaves a Present
Просмотров 222Месяц назад
I was sitting on my screened-in porch out back when I felt a big thump. I thought, "is there an earthquake?" A few minutes later a BEAR came out from under the porch. He must have spent the night there and like a lot of us, he relieved himself after he woke up! I shouted at him and he ignored me. Eventually he wandered off. I didn't notice the neighbor was walking around his yard at the time un...

Long Lost Traces of Hartford's Old Riverfront
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.2 месяца назад
Hartford, Connecticut's riverfront has gone through many changes over the years. Long before the highway came through, the Valley Railroad was built in 1871 through the warehouse district by the river. A number of old warehouses and fish markets, documented in photographs in the 1860s and 1870s, were demolished around this time. I talk about them in this video, as well as a sycamore tree that s...

    Until August 1975, I lived on Charter Oak Avenue, across from Capewell Manufacturing, not so far from Richard J. Kinsella school, Colt Park, The Polish Home, The Church of the Good Shepard etc. I can't believe it took me until now, 2024, to learn this info!😂 Thank you!❤ (Please forgive me if I didn't use the right names... I was just a kid and only knew the names my parents called these places😊)

    Hi Dan! I really enjoy your videos, especially since no one really talks about the history of Hartford. One question though, after researching all these great buildings now lost to history, is Hartford better off not or would Hartford be better off still having some of these great buildings still around? Also, what was at the site of the Hartford Hilton hotel before it was torn down for a World Trade Center that never materializedid and is now a parking lot?

    • @historywithdansterner263
      @historywithdansterner263 15 дней назад

      I know that every building couldn't be saved, but there are certain landmarks, like the Y.M.C.A. Building, for instance, that complemented the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch and should have been preserved. This is especially true when the demolished structures were replaced by parking lots. The city would also have benefitted by having more surviving examples of its early architecture, like the lost Barnabas Deane House and many others, as well as Victorian era houses like the Goodwin Castle. If more unbroken stretches of 19th-century commercial buildings had survived they would give more of a sense of how much of downtown once appeared. I touch upon part of the area of the old Hilton Hotel at the end of this video: ruclips.net/video/tSPe8cchW88/видео.htmlsi=UYs156_bae_4yLvY

    These are very bitter sweet videos. The loss of one of Americas oldest once wealthy cities to an office park surrounded by ghettos. In one of the wealthiest states aside from New Haven all our big cities are a mess of decay lost architecture , intrusive highways and ugly modern crap. At least New Haven with its intrusive highways and swaths of lost buildings have beautiful commercial blocks. Wealthy neighborhoods with blocks of mansions, Yale University and surviving Victorian neighborhoods even with all the plastic siding.

    One missing - Cinema City - the four screen theater near the airport. Newer than some of Hartford's theaters, it struggled on past the millennium before being demolished. Known for showing independent and foreign films, it provided a change from other theaters' offerings.

    The taxpayers of Hartford paid to build both the Yard Goat baseball field and the Hartford Civic Center and its a dishonor to them to exclusively refer to those places with a commercial name. When these places need maintenance, who pays for it? The commercial sponsors will just pull out and not give a damn when the places make them look bad. If these guys want to pay to advertise at the taxpayers expense insist they refer to the places as The Yard Goat stadium sponsored by Dunkin or The Hartford Civic Center sponsored by XL. We should not let big business take credit for the sacrifices and hard work our community put into having these facilities. Truly the taxpayers should be insulted not to be acknowledged for the existance of their creations.
