    Funny part about the Korean "landlord" is that only people of Northern Mariana Island descent can own land in the CNMI. Ethnic Koreans can't own land, they can only do 55 year leases. It's the only place on US soil where Chinese citizens can visit without a visa. There used to be a 45-day visa-free entry for Chinese citizens, so at one point more babies were born to Chinese mothers than to Saipan locals. The largest casino fine ever issued in the US was issued in the CNMI. A shadowy Chinese billionaire family was actually running yachts filled with cash from Saipan to the Philippines less than 10 years ago. It's a crazy place with lots of boom and bust history.

      It does feel quite isolated, being such a small, remote island. It's a much slower, more relaxed pace of life. There is a lot of morbid history on the island, which we'll go into more in a future video, but there's a lot of life too, feels very international with many nationalities and cultures - many Filipinos, Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, people from other Micronesian islands, lots from mainland US, and even a few Europeans! We did see a lot of abandoned or unfinished buildings, like hotels and malls, which is ashame, the economy hasn't really recovered from the super typhoon quickly followed by the COVID pandemic and could do with a fresh injection of tourism. We loved the people, so friendly and helpful. Not sure if we could live there permanently, as we love travelling and visiting new places so much, but it was definitely an enriching experience to spend a month there and we'd consider going back for a longer period.😊

      I’m really glad you asked that question because to me the whole appeal of a place like Saipan is the calmness I am looking to get away from it all ! It seems like if you just couldn’t get along without night life and glamour you could just zip over to Asia and party like a Rock Star

    • @HangryLei
      @HangryLei 2 месяца назад

      Economy-wise, I’d say you’re right about people sending money out, but we’re mostly struggling due to poor decisions by certain officials and the lack of tourism. Tourism is supposed to be our main source of income, but it still hasn’t picked up since COVID. It’s a pretty okay place for a vacay - our beach sunsets are beautiful, even as a local I’ll never get tired of them. But if you’re okay with a small hiding hole of an island with slow/chill vibes, lack of a flashy nightlife (I think our only “real club” just closed again recently), lack of big industries (no malls - DFS is aimed specifically for tourists interested in brand items), unpredictable power or water outages (they’re working on it and water tanks are a blessing) speed limits between 15mph to 45mph (but really, what is a speed limit on an empty strip of road?), and the occasional typhoon (we literally have a season dedicated to them, sorry to say), it’s not TOO bad living here. Of course, I can say that since I’ve been living here all my life and have learned to deal with all that. 😂 I actually had some relatives who lived in Florida for a long while and later moved here for a short time to run away from the raising prices during COVID, but they were originally from another Micronesian island so they adapted back to the island life well. My younger cousins did say it was boring here though, so they ended up being the life of the party wherever we went. 🤣 Also, may I ask what exactly you’ve heard that made it seem everything here revolves around death? I’m curious as to whether you were referring to the economy or certain beliefs we have.

      Glad you enjoy living there so much and have been able to stay 30 years - you must feel very settled ❤

    Medical at twelve times the price - welcome to the US. (Actually, $300 for an office visit and prescription was a deal.). Then you get sedentary. Next you'll have whiney, entitled men walking around with guns. Philippines beats Saipan and Guam.

      I think it's pretty clear from the video that we got Drake Lake! 😅 Thanks for watching 👍🏼

      @@thelifeofreillytravels Wow the way you reply sounds really rude. Maybe you didn't record the Shake part, which is why I asked. You also mention that you experienced the Drake Shake coming back

      Didn't mean to sound rude, didn't fully understand your question. We did experience Drake Shake on the way back north, we show a bit of that on our Antarctica- Elephant Island video, but this southward crossing was all plain sailing!😅
