- Welcome back to Antarctica! This is our second day cruising the South Shetland Islands aboard the Norwegian Star. Today, we explore Elephant Island, made famous by the explorer Ernest Shackleton and his crew, who called this inhospitable rock home for 4 months whilst waiting to be rescued! We get a real taste of what conditions would have been like for Shackleton and his men as they tried to make land amidst towering cliffs and inaccessible glaciers, whilst battling storm winds and huge waves!

Truly breathtaking. Thanks for showing and telling.
You're welcome! 😊
It’s always nice hearing another Scottish accent randomly when searching for Shackleton stories haha. Great video love from Cumbernauld.
I know eh? We've just spent 2 months travelling in the far east & didn't meet a single Scottish person the whole time! 😲 Coming home, everyone's accents sound stronger!😂 Thanks for watching 😁
Love this! My husband and I were there earlier this year in February. We took an NCL Star as well and it was magical. The best part for me was being surrounded by hundreds of Fin Whales feeding all around us.
Thank you! It was an amazing cruise wasn't it? Yeah same for us, when they announced that there were Fin whales all around the ship, there was such a buzz!😃
Omg this is the dream for us. Hi 👋 nice to meet you. Beautiful captures. Looking forward to watching your other videos
Hi Mike & Chelsea!👋 Yes, it had been a dream of ours for a long time too! Still can't believe we actually got there! Hope you do too someday.😊 Thanks for watching!😄
😍 The best part of the video was hunting for the rare species of Phil... 🥃😂
Haha, yeah, Phil in his natural habitat - drinking a Scottish single malt!😂🥃
Your Antarctica videos are amazing! You captured so much beautiful footage. Thanks again for all your work to make and share:) Question: Did you get to see the mainland Antarctic Peninsula at all? You mentioned that you can only see it on a clear day, but the ship didn’t go close enough for you to see? Did they speak to this at all? Thanks again!
Thank you very much!😊 It was such an amazing experience to be there, glad to be able to share it with others.😁 Sadly, no, we didn't actually see the mainland Antarctic Peninsula. Though we knew before taking the cruise that we wouldn't be able to step foot on land in Antarctica, one of the questions I did ask at a Q&A with the scientists was whether we would see the Peninsula, and that's when he told us only if it were perfectly clear and calm conditions.
We are going in a few days very rough weather but looks like it's worth it
We wish you all the best! Youll love it - the rough weather adds to the atmosphere and the ship is very safe - you're in good hands with Cpt Luigi!
What side of the ship is better for views, I am taking the same cruise in March, I am trying to decode which side of the ship to be on. Thanks
We were on the starboard side, which may have been slightly better on the southward journey, but when we were Antarctica itself, the captain would make a 360 turn whenever there was a noteworthy view so that all balcony cabins could see it. Thanks for watching & enjoy your cruise!😊
What month was yr visit?
It was January 2023
In wich date you went there ?
Hi, we were there in January last year.😊
@@thelifeofreillytravels hi. Great. Thank you for answer. It will be intersting to know how it looks in winter.
You're welcome!😊 The cruises only go during December/January/February, which is summer in Antarctica, as in their winter, there is too much sea ice for ships to safely sail there.
