Nine Inch Nails - We're In This Together | Cover by Bloodmeridian
Since 1989 I've been a huge fan of Trent Reznor, from his powerful and expansive body of work with Nine Inch Nails to his recent award-winning film scores. The album The Fragile remains, to me, one of his crowning achievements, and among its strongest tracks is We're In This Together, a track that embodies Reznor's genius at taking eerie, edgy, off-kilter and sinister elements and crafting them into a catchy and accessible song that feels lean even though it clocks in at over seven minutes.
I haven't strayed too far from the original arrangement because I feel that when you're covering a song, unless you're completely reinventing it, if you stray too far from the blueprint you risk losing ...

    I used to not like relic guitars, but then life happened and I learned the value of things that have been "lived in". I also appreciate being able to relax and not worry about getting a scratch on a $10,000 instrument. I like to use my things and not feel like I have to protect them. Example: I personally get the most enjoyment out of my cars after they have about 50K miles on them and I am not worried about where I park them, or whether or not they are covered in a storm. Do I own the car/guitar, or does it own me? There is value in the wear/tear on some items. An old broken in leather jacket being one of them. In fact, relics remind of a really nice old pair of leather shoes that have been broken in nicely but have recently had brand new soles put on them. A great combination. These points you have made are great. Anderton's also did a wonderful explanation similar to your points. I want to point out a couple things as well. Eddie Van Halen's guitars were NEVER flawless, not even new. Put together from spare parts and factory seconds with a home paint job. Slash's iconic Les Paul model is in fact a knockoff. Brian May built his own guitar out of an old piece of wood that was previously a mantel off of a fireplace. You don't need beautiful or mint condition gear to make good music. In my opinion (having been around the guitar community in various forms over the last 20 years) if it is reliable/looks cool/plays well/sounds as you like, then why even care what anyone else thinks? Enjoy your instrument and don't worry about what people think of it. The people who get really caught up in these battles are often not the ones doing anything at a high level other than arguing on Internet forums.

    Gatekeeper is kind of a silly term for people stating their opinion. What “gate” (power) do they have? By your example how are you not gatekeeping people who have opinions?

    • @MaxRossellMusic
      @MaxRossellMusic 3 дня назад

      I don't think you understand the term "gatekeeping". There are guys who think worn-looking guitars should be the sole reserve of guitarists with the time and/or money to achieve instruments with "genuine" wear. The collective power they have is peer-pressure, which they exert through constantly belittling and insulting relics and people who buy them. But those guys are entitled to their opinions, and it's not "gatekeeping" to explain to them that it's not okay to be dicks to people who just want to have guitars they think look cool.

    You should explain about materials and labor and hands on workmanship to these boobs that try to compare those unethical counterfeit chibsons to the real deal. I have a 2007 R8 plain top and I've played many other regular USA LP's and there's a difference. For some reason lots of people say 2007 used the best woods of the custom shop reissues, true? Who know's. There all nice.

    Raw material prices roundabout: - One piece quatersawn genuine mahogany neck - 150$ - one piece genuine mahogany body AA quality- 150$ - nice bookmatched plaintop 80$ or highly figured eastern hard maple 200$ - nicely figured and dark rosewood fretboard AAA quality - 40$ Electronics, machines plastics - repro pickups and electric harness 300$ Tuning machines 30$ - frets, plastic parts 50$ There are no man-hours included, just the pure materials you need to build the guitar without machine running costs and work materials. The better the materials, I.e. light wood or higher quality the more expensive it is. Hide glue is a tricky stuff to work with, I personally use fish glue, it’s as good and offers the same properties, it’s protein based as well. The finishing process is also tricky, nitrocellulose lacquer is highly sensitive stuff and needs experience to be applied properly. All in all the higher tier Gibson and PRS, that basically use the same manufacturing process are expensive because adding all costs up, including manpower, they have high costs and this is responsible for the price, if it needs to be that high, I don’t know, I’m not a Gibson accountant but I know that I won’t sell my handmade stuff under 2.5 grand if I have material costs only about a grand, more likely for 3k at least.😂

    The price is all hype. In 1958 they didnt use the best of the best select stuff, just what was available. Some 58-60's are not even good. Was luck of the draw. I have a $3k one that is nothing special, and I have some cheap chibsons I re-did and are better than my $3k gibson now. Ive taken them all apart and even built one. No reason a gibson standard shouldnt be $800. and the re-issues shouldnt cost any more because there is nothing different really. The aged and special treatments ones can cost more, but its not rocket science to do it, couple hundred bucks at most. But $5k ? Its just insanity. And with their sub par QC , my inlays started lifting up on mine. I think they inflate the price to trick people into thinking its so much better than it actually is. And the difference is just something in peoples heads most the time.

    I just bought the smaller version of this pedal. It sucks that there’s no recourse for anything like this purchased 2nd hand. I think it is the price we pay for access to incredible tones that are normally hard to acquire, be it because of scarcity or price. Unfortunately, planned obsolescence is part of most products, from televisions to phones to guitar pedals. I’ve gone through a similar experience with a Boss M50. It’s such a great multi effects pedal, with an incredible library of effects. But when mine died long after warranty, it was impossible to get fixed. I could either buy another, used, at close to the same price I paid for it used, and risk the same experience, or buy the newer, more expensive (and not as user friendly) version of the pedal. I went a different way, and downsized, building a board of my own methodically with single effects units. It’s a shame. I have a tube amp from the late 50s I inherited, and I’m thankful these old amplifiers still have people that can repair them.

    Buy what you want, I don't care but what you buy says something about you. Of course most people who buy relics are posers. You don't keep your opinion to yourself so why should I? People who buy pre ripped jeans are posers too. They're buying an image, an image that wasn't earned. Doesn't make you a bad player or bad person, you might be a brilliant player. Pop and rock music is full of posers, doesn't necessarily mean they're bad musicians (although they might be). Image is very important to people, often inordinately so, just look at music business and tell me what they put first.

    Hero. People need to chill out. Live and let live. I've just sold a very 60's LP - a very, very special one - which was quite dinged up and tomorrow I've got a heavy relic from Fender CS arriving. Somebody else put the dings in both 🙂 Actually, I'm making the cardinal sin just by writing this comment. I've bought the heavy relic because I think it looks cool, it's in my preferred playing specs and it's my own money. Why any of those three things are anyone elses business are beyond me. The cardinal sin I mentioned...is bothering toever acknowledge or write a counter argument to such vindictive/nasty narcisism. I don't like bananas but I don't scream at people who eat them. You've really it the nail on the head though. People who say relics are for posers are posing as an authority figure themselves. Brilliantly apt, appropriately savage and hilariously true. Wise man 🙏

  • @somerandomguy180

    Another good comparison. My two pence worth, though is that I think those 'pensioner' guitar tones are far superior to the modern day metal. No will remember the stuff today; it all sounds the same. Just a wall of saturated noise. There's little in the way of dynamics in the majority of it (exception apply of course). I think if modern players would take the same approach to creativity as the genre founders, we might have more interesting and better sounding results. Just swamping everything in gain isn't the answer, IMHO.

    Thank you a thousand times over for making this video! As someone ith a similar background in design, engineering and manufacturing I know how much the process of building a guitar has changed in the last 65 years, how nearly impossible it is to go back in time and recreate that process, how insanely expensive it becomes and how close Gibson comes to achieving the impossible. Thus, it drives me nuts when people's first, and frequently only, comment on Custom Shop guitars is that 'they're too expensive'. What these people always fail to realize is that they're paying for an item that can only be made in one place on earth with all the attendant limitations that come with that. If the Custom Shop were to shut down this level of replication could not be achieved by anyone else, anywhere. Your explanation of the craftsmanship and materials costs is far and away the best I've seen; hopefully you will have created some converts. Thank you again.

  • @stephenbarrett7472
    @stephenbarrett7472 23 дня назад

    It’s always pretty easy to find people that make negative comments. I’ve been playing since before relic and aged guitars were a thing. Back then people would tell me “I can’t believe you paid that much for a guitar and you’re not even in a band. That guitar should be on stage.” They shamed me for even having it. I never let it bother me. I’ve always thought of myself as a “guitar enthusiast” that can play pretty well. I’ve gotten a lot of enjoyment from all the guitars I’ve had over the years, mint, relic and vintage alike. People are going to say all kinds of things and that’s fine but don’t let them spoil your enjoyment. Life’s too short to worry about comments online or anywhere else.

    Have you ever noticed that all of these anti-Chibson guys all have the exact same set of points? They're so concerned about someone getting tricked in a resale- is this really a big issue? They're SO morally concerned about the copyrights of a massive company that is swimming in profits. The reality is, these are guys that own Gibsons and truly believe that makes them somehow better, and they can't STAND that someone could purchase a look-a-like for $300. Gibsons are awesome, and Chibsons can be really good. Mind your own business and stop worrying about what anybody else is playing. And spare us your moral outrage when the world has a thousand other REAL problems that should be addressed.

    • @MaxRossellMusic
      @MaxRossellMusic 23 дня назад

      I've known people who have been duped into buying fake Gibsons, so yes it's an issue. How big of an issue it is depends on how much empathy you have. And it's irrelevant how rich Gibson is, if you think intellectual property should be protected then everyone's intellectual property should be protected. Anyone with a grand or so can own a real Gibson, Gibson owners don't think they're better, and nobody who owns an actual Gibson feels threatened by a knockoff. Maybe it's that you get off on the delusion that your knockoff somehow annoys people who can afford the real thing? And, in case you weren't aware, the existence of larger problems doesn't make smaller problems irrelevant. I'll start minding my own business when people stop defending black markets.

      @@MaxRossellMusic I stand by my stated opinion, and I fully understand your point, which, in my opinion, is not a valid point. A fact of modern life is that our digital audio wonders are not easy to repair. To keep the size as well as price down, we sacrifice the ability to repair them easily or cheaply. Regardless of what company we're talking about, they are all in the business of selling new items. Repairing their used items makes it harder for them to sell new ones to you. Do I like this new way of making things? No, of course not, but it's the way that things are now. Also, in my opinion, the manner in which you titled your video makes it look as if you're singling out TC Electronic for doing what all the manufacturers do now. It does indeed seem very click-baitish to me. I can commiserate with you over getting burned on buying a used pedal, but buying anything used carries that risk. It sucks when it happens, but I don't blame the company that made it. The problem could easily be that someone that owned the pedal before you mistreated or misused it, and its premature end may be due to that.

The problem is, as I stated quite clearly in the video, is that companies such as (but not exclusively) TC Electronic don't have a satisfactory mechanism in place to repair their gear affordably for the end user so as to keep it in use as opposed to creating waste. I get that you don't think that's a problem, however "it's the way things are now" (not to mention "grow up and get over it") doesn't make for a particularly compelling argument. Perhaps you could have another stab at explaining why we should all be fine with companies not supporting their products beyond a nominal period. As for the way I titled my video singling out TC Electronic, I don't know if you noticed but the title doesn't name the brand. And while it may be attention-grabbing, it's 100% accurate so doesn't qualify as clickbait.

      @@MaxRossellMusic Yes, I'll agree that I was a bit brusque in my original comment, and I apologize for that. Chalk it up to hot, humid weather here in America and a lack of sleep lately, also perhaps a slight case of an old man yelling at clouds. Rather than saying that I don't think it's a problem, it's more accurate to say that I'm a realist. Given how the world works now, I feel that it's unrealistic to expect companies to do what you're asking them to do. I'm sure there are the rare exceptions, but not many.

    the way our society makes things that are later simply disposed of is actually quite grotesque. but, back to pedals: this is what makes boss so good in that their stuff never breaks - and also what makes companies like eqd so exceptional as they will back their products for as long as they are in business.

    Having played custom Gibson guitars they sound great but way overpriced and overrated. I dislike the necks too cramped and thick for my taste. Prefer superstrat necks and fretboards. I tried to like Gibson LP guitars but too hard to play shred type stuff. Amp and pedals make the tone more than the guitar anyways. Cork sniffers drove price up.

    My only question is how do guys who are into relic’d guitars decide which pair of pre ripped jeans they should wear everyday?

    Hey Max, Maybe put Strat features into a Tele body and see how you feel? Like a Nashville Strat, but more like a... California Tele?

    Particle board cabinet, mediocre PCB construction, unusable gain channel. It is a great pedal platform due to the excellent clean channel, but multiple pedals kill the tone of the amp anyway, so...

    Really amusing comments. The love:hate ratio is about even. I’m on the love side with a George Benson model. Has a tube and speaker mod (to increase headroom) with an all pine cab. Works well for jazz on a hollow body. Sparkles.

    I have a 2004 R8 and it has become my number one guitar. It has been the greatest guitar I've owned. All the other reissues Gibson makes isn't as warm and bluesy. It always been dependable onstage and off. Stays in tune and sounds wonderful through any amp and pedal.
