Off the Record Presents: Joe Bussard
In the second installment of Off the Record Presents, we make the record-collector's version of the pilgrimage to Mecca vis-à-vis Joe Bussard's wonderful basement! Owner of one of the finest collections of prewar country, blues, and jazz records in the world, the late Mr. Bussard was one of the most famed and accessible names in the 78rpm world for generations.

Off the Record Presents: Ken Brooks
Просмотров 7 тыс.8 лет назад
This is the first in a series, a pilot episode if you will, of short documentaries about the lives and hobbies of 78 rpm record collectors that I would be making as a part of my radio show, Off the Record on WIUX (Facebook.com/offtherecordWIUX). This first episode features Indianapolis collector Ken Brooks. The project was completed for an IU media school class, P351 Video Field and Post Produc...
Presidential Race

This is a short production I made in an Indiana University telecommunications production class. It is a little satire on the heated political climate surrounding this year's election, and is a reminder that there are more important things to worry about than what button you are wearing...most of the time. The music is an instrumental rendition of "America the Beautiful," which I got from a roya...
Hop Head
Просмотров 2838 лет назад
This is a project I created for a IU Media School class P351, Video Field and Post Production. The video is essentially an expression of how old jazz record collectors are so darn eccentric. The music used in this project is Duke Ellington's "Hop Head," recorded on March 22, 1927 and released on Columbia record 953-D. Camera credit goes to Jonathan Carey.
1950s Voice of Music Turntable - "Margie" by Bix Beiderbecke and his Gang
Просмотров 28110 лет назад
Thought it would be appropriate to play a "new" reissue record on a machine from the 1950s! This was my first turntable I got when I was about 10 (hence all of the knickknacks on the outside of the machine. I've been collecting ever since! This "Special Editions" record was made in the 1940s, the "first American issue" of Bix's "Margie," never released back in the '20s. Great stuff!
1907 Columbia "BN" Gramophone - "Don't Be Like That" by Seger Ellis and the Tampa Blue Artistes
Просмотров 31810 лет назад
New acquisition! Quite a beauty, this lovingly restored Columbia Graphohone has moved to its new home and is settling in well! Sever Ellis doesn't turn up much on RUclips, and especially not with such hot accompaniment! Enjoy these two works of art.
1920 Edison C-19 - "Stockholm Stomp" by Fletcher Henderson and his Orchestra
Просмотров 14910 лет назад
Unusual combination! My electric turntable is down at school while I'm at home for Thanksgiving break, wanted to enjoy my new Henderson disc somehow! Haven't used my lateral 78 adapter with my Laboratory Model yet, seems to work nicely with a soft-tone needle. Enjoy this great number from 1927!
1920 Edison C-19 - "That's My Weakness Now" by Jack Kaufman and the 7 Blue Babies
Просмотров 27810 лет назад
BIG new toy! This machine didn't last two days in the Indiana Antique Company in Warsaw, IN before I stuck it in the car! This is a double-spring Edison Laboratory Model Diamond Disc C-19 Chippendale from 1920 (whew!) playing "That's My Weakness Now" by Jack Kaufman and the 7 Blue Babies on disc # 52364-R. Seems like all other uploads are of the more instrumentally-oriented B.A. Rolfe version, ...
1900's Talk-o-Phone - "Toddlin' Blues" by Original Dixieland Jazz Band
Просмотров 2 тыс.10 лет назад
New territory for me, an outside-horn machine! This is a pseudo-Talk-o-Phone rear-mount phonograph from the early 1900s. Talk-o-Phones were made by Columbia at a time when they were undergoing legal disputes with Victor so that they could still be making machines. Ironically, the phonograph's motor has been replaced with a Victor assembly some time after it was built. The tune, "Toddlin' Blues,...
Emerson Console - "Doo-Wacka-Doo" by Joseph Samuels' Music Masters
Просмотров 12510 лет назад
Two treasures from antique malls reunited in harmonious harmony! Here is presumably electrically recorded "Doo-Wacka-Doo" performed by Joseph Samuels' Music Masters from the mid-'20s. Will lyrics would be nice, the solos - the trumpet in particular - are quite good for the label. Enjoy!
1920s Victrola 4-7 - "Tozo!" by Fletcher Henderson and his Orchestra
Просмотров 30010 лет назад
Winding down (ho ho ho) on space for phonographs, the search is on for great things that come in mid-sized packages! I promised the seller of this record long ago that I would post a video of this song, "Tozo!" a hot 1927 Fletcher Henderson dance tune, in my opinion, one of the best pressed by the group. Both the record and the phonograph were nice finds which of course is what collecting is al...

Cheney Talking Machine - "Deep Henderson" by (Sam) Lanin's Dance Orchestra
Просмотров 14710 лет назад
Fresh off of eBay, here's a nice rendition of "Deep Henderson" on Romeo 201 by Sam Lanin. While the solos might not be as distinguished as the Coon-Sanders version, it certainly has a better build to the end. Enjoy, even despite my difficulty with doing the Charleston on the carpeting!

It was fascinating to see this very old record being played on a wind-up gramophone. The sound quality is surprisingly good. Was this song ever recorded on a phonograph cylinder? The earliest date I have for its composition is 1920. Could it be even earlier? Winifred Atwell rendered this melody very well on a record called "Piano Party" which contained a medley of old songs, recorded in the 1950s.
