Muzio Clementi, Op. 36, No. 1, 3rd Mvt. Vivace C major, RCM 3
In the Peters edition it indicates starting softly, but with such a tempo and excited theme, that's a challenge. I phrase the theme slightly differently than is indicated. Also, when emphasizing the G in the right hand, I try to let it ring or use an agogic accent (slight delay).
I love the scherzo like second theme which plays on the 2 repeated staccato notes. My professor from university in the 80s advised that in any scherzo like passage we can speed the sixteenth notes to sweep through the musical idea highly energized.
The third or cadence theme has some lovely passage (scale) work in the right hand that needs to be shaped dynamically and flow smoothly. It's ok to slow the transition l...

Muzio Clementi, Sonatina 0p. 36, No. 1 Slow movement in F major, RCM 3

Play this slow movement lovingly appreciating each and every note. A slow movement must have nuance. The left triplets need to be subdued. The right hand melody is shaped across the bar line, with momentum carrying us forward. A few select notes are rung a little sweeter to highlight their beauty. Perhaps careful quarter pedal to warm the texture is ok in a few select places. Repeated notes hav...

What a well crafted Sonata, so compact and impactful. It's melody sticks in your hand and in your ear. I've chosen a swift tempo to demonstrate its virtuoso capacity, but it sounds quite nice in slower tempos too. The repeats work very well. It's form is rounded binary. The opening theme is a broken C triad followed by descending scale fragments. The second theme is in the key of the dominant ,...
Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach (attr. to Christian Petzold ) Minuet in G minor, BWV Anh. 115, RCM3

This piece was originally attributed to Bach and was surely one of the teaching pieces his many children learned in their musical education. I would have liked to add another trill ornament on the penultimate chord at the end of the piece. In those days it was the style for performers to add their own ornaments according to their personal taste. I was mostly following my score here. The repeats...

I sang this tonight for our Church St. John the Apostle's dedication and laying of wreath ceremony. The lyrics were set to an old Irish tune with the accompaniment improvising using a lead sheet. My friend TJ had recorded it and set it to the picture of poppies. I'm surprised at how it moved me when listening to the playback since I was unsure when singing it whether I had done the poem justice...

Playing softly is quite the challenge. Press the key too slowly or lightly and you may not hear a thing. The connection between the key bed and your ear needs to be intuited. It take much practice. If you are student please be sure to practice your technical work ( scales, chords and arpeggios) equally soft as loud) I recorded this more than a few times due to notes not sounding, but it led to ...

This short study has been a favourite of many students. The opening idea in A minor is simple enough. Enter in measure 19 and we hear a rich harmonic shift to Eb minor, for a colorful development of the motif. You hear the return of the A section in measure 35. Balancing the parts to highlight the left hand melody and creating the larger linear phrases are needed here. I use a feeling tone of a...

This miniature has only 24 measures. To achieve the speed of the triplet a rebound action is necessary. Careful to play the dotted eighth and sixteenth rather jaggedly so it's not confused with the triplet rhythm. One must play the staccato lightly. Pull a wide ritardando to be more dramatic and take time for the sforzando A flat 7 chord near the end. While the piece is in C major, a quieter mi...
Franz Joseph Haydn, Sonata in G Major, Hob. XVI:G1, 1st Movement, RCM 6

Happy Haydn is fun to play. The 32nd notes are new to most students at this level, and we see many in this piece, so getting to know it, they have a chance to master those 5 note quips. The momentum passes through the bar line and these notes need to sweep freely. Its challenging to control the trills which appear at the end of each section. A repeat of the exposition is warranted in this short...
J S Bach, Invention 1, C major, BWV 772

How does Bach manage to slip in and out of so many other keys in such a short piece while maintaining the main tonality? He's a master at this kind of writing and thank goodness his music is part of the core repertoire to this day. This is a finely crafted invention with tight construction and imagination! It is cheerful and sometimes reflective. Roughly divided into three sections it has an ex...

This charming list D piece from the 2015 Edition became a student favourite. It's rich harmonies and soothing melody line was perfect for teens. Care is taken to project the melody line and balance the chords to create that rich texture. Pedal is used to blend and connect. Resolutions of chords are always slipped into gently. The middle section can have slightly more momentum. Here I take a bit...

This Allegro third movement has some nice passage work in the right hand. Blink and it's over!! I like to spin through some notes more quickly to add character especially in mm. 17-20. It's easy enough to memorize in an afternoon. Clementi has some much loved teaching pieces in his Op. 36.

As the left hand has most of the melodic content, controlling and diminishing the right hand top repeated note is a task. Treating the second note in each grouping on top as lesser in a rebound motion creates a better effect. Care is taken to soften any resolution chords and surprising harmonic shifts. Watch out for the accidentals in this one as there is a passage that demands close attention ...

This was a new addition to the 2022 edition of the Celebration Series Repertoire book level 4. My students have loved learning it due to the textures created with the pedal and repetitive note patterns. They mostly want to stick to the beat though being too shy to add rubato, or end up racing through many of the notes in the figurative sections (mm.15-22 for example). To be effective in renderi...

This piece has a ton of chracter. It seems to have a playful character and a bit of showmanship especially with the hand over hand sections. You can breath a bit musically between sections. The triplet turn figures remain light and melodic. I've heard recordings with the landing note made short, but I like to give it full lyrical value. Care is taken to keep the LH alberti broken chords express...

Wow... keren❤❤❤
Catchy, beautiful piano music. Brilliant playing 🎹🎶👍❤
Dear Joanne Parenteau. More than a performance. Hands with a descriptive technique for the student of the performing arts. Finally, our wait for the third season is over. A performance interpretation course for students of the performing arts. A performance training course in three characters of a piano sonata. Thank you for your time. Best wishes to my dear colleague. Vahid Goli
Did you get my message
Nice playing with pedals are you using please reply thanks
I use the damper pedal on the right and try to balance the notes within each chord to maximize the colour and textural nuance. Clearing away the old chord as each new one appears. It's called syncopated pedalling because you usually life the pedal on each beat while the next chord is being sounded. Get it?
Sweet!!!
Dear Joanne Parenteau, the movement patterns of the wrists and hands correspond to the sonorities. The use of these movement patterns reflects the transfer of the musician's interpretation and the changing moods of the music. Therefore, the interpretive performance of a piece and the technique of the wrists, hands, and fingers are inseparable. Thank you for bringing all your experiences to our classes to help us teach and interpret. Don't forget that pianists come and go, but the names of piano teachers remain forever. Orchestra conductor. Musicologist…… Vahid Goli
One conductor said we have to make each note sing so we can make its inner life visible. I use my ears to guide my expression. My early teachers emphasized freedom in arms. Another tip I learn later was to sit far enough away from the keys as to have a larger perspective visually, and room to manoeuvre. Thanks for your encouragement!❤️
Dear Joanne Parenteau, the value of art is always based on the mastery and skill of the great masters and their way of thinking. Best wishes to my dear colleague and friend.
Beautiful. Thank you.
Thanks for listening

Vahid Goli.
I appreciate your comments. Giving thanks for music and the masters that cultivated such a treasure is fitting!
@ Dear Joanne Parenteau (narrator and music commentator), I completely agree with your opinion, but these great treasures shine and show with the hands of great people. Hands with great thoughts behind them. It is valuable for us to hear it with your great hands and thoughts. Greetings and all the best to you.
@ Thank you for your time and visit.
Very beautiful 🎶
I played "Für Elise" for my Uncle, and he sayed: "Oh I like that: Pour Adline from Richard Clayderman" 😉 I'm not joking, but telling a funny true story. Some people mix up things always like Austria and Australia. By the way I am from Austria. You play it very well, If I am on that level I will upload, but 'not satisfied with my performance so far, but I learn and improve. Our work is inspiring me, thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍👍 I klicked the like and subscribe no 172
That's cool. Glad you find inspiration in watching other posts. So do I. It helps bring a new perspective to an old way of playing something. We continue to grow musically! cheers - J : )

………… Vahid Goli.

Find a good beginner arrangement of the piece. The original composition is considered late intermediate level. Good luck.

Ah, greetings! I just hit 60 and was a late starter at the piano too, not till the age of 16. However learning accordion from a young age gave me the note reading skills that were needed to pick up piano rather quickly. I'm so happy for you to find joy in playing piano. 😁
Oh, that music will never get old, it’s so beautiful and you played it very good🎉
Beautifully played
So soothing! Very well done! 👏🏻

Learning this from last 20 days, its just not easy how it looks !!
Great for you! It's in the key of A minor, so listening in respect to its key/scale is helpful. I hope you can hear and identify the left hand harmonies too. Sometimes students find it difficult moving from one section to the next and keeping the 3 eighth notes per measure at the same pace. Keep at it. This piece never gets tired, it's a masterpiece!

Vahid Goli
Your words are so very encouraging. Yes technique to serve the artistry. Playing with focus on the energy within the notes to animate the voice expressed by the composer. Thank you my friend for taking the time to comment. All the best with your students. Tonight 20 of my students are gathering in this small studio to play for each other. We call it music share night. Afterward we have treats and they can get to know one another. Cheers❤J
Dear Joanne Your golden fingers play from your heart and we rarely see such pianists today. I myself, as a professor, before the students of the art of playing the piano, was greatly influenced by your performance. You proved that the technique cannot be separated from the interpretation of a piano piece. Captivating an audience and evoking real emotion in a piano performance requires more than just mastering the notes. Playing with musical subtleties is an essential skill that contributes to the depth and expression of each piece, and you have learned all these lessons in one piano performance. Thank you for taking the time to visit. I wish health and the best for my dear colleague and friend. Vahid Goli
Dear Joanne Parenteau. Pedagogical professor of piano art, your performance is an idea that is the result of your experiences. You breathed the piece, and played it from the bottom of your heart. Your signature will always be under this piano performance. Greetings to you. Vahid Goli
