Why Isn't EVERY New Driving Game Using THIS Engine?
Turn one pileups would never be the same again. But seriously, would small incidents with race-ending consequences like burst radiators, oil leaks, suspension damage be a realism turn-on for you or an absolute turn-off?
The scope of Beamng.drive covers truck simulators, car builders, survival games, rallying, track racing, off-roading, and more. When engines like Forzatech scratch your car up a bit, Unreal Engine needs separate physics work for driving simulation, etc. doesn't it make sense for this highly detailed physics and damage simulator to be the basis for all kinds of driving/racing game in the future?

    Forza Motorsport in a Nutshell 1. If you dont overtake everyone by corner 3, on high difficulty the AI in first place will never be seen again 2. AI will dive bomb into you if you get too close passing because fuck you 3. Once you pass the AI suddenly they rage quit and its not even a race and defending your position is pretty pointless they wont even try Wtf happened ? How do you make a next gen game ($70 btw) based on racing.... but the AI is shit.

    It's still a pretty miserable experience. Unless you get pole and enough ahead you're going to get slammed into turn 1/2 by someone who decides they no longer like using their brakes and get a 4 second penalty becuase how dare you... game is a mess

    Turn 10 made AI drivers not racers, they are completely unable/incapable to overtake. I've done a 30 lap old lemans with d-x class unmodded cars and saw x class cars drive behind d class for the entire mulsanne straight. The AI is dogshit. If thats the best example of what Microsoft with it's trillions of dollars can make an AI do.... It's understandable why they eyeing openAI so much

    The Forza Drivatar learn to behave like this era of racing gamers, that is why the drivatar drives soo retardedly.😅😅😅. No joke, try racing online the first thing you see two racers hooking up shoving each other off track, one ahead in 1st place using some type of speed/grip hack tune, then one in front of you that brakes way too slow in corners and if you overtake that racer will just ram you on the next corner...

    Original AC is a great game, but can't be considered a SIM racer anymore due to how out of date the technology is. Even race cars which are supposed to use the best tires and have literal tons of downforce feel like they are driving around an ice skating rink

      I must say, I wasn't sim racing when AC took the scene by storm so I've never felt as connected to it as many do. I agree with you that something isn't quite there in terms of handling but there are many hundreds if not thousands who'd disagree with us even today.

    This video is extremely snobby and cringe. In my opinion, ACC gets boring quick due to limited gt3 cars (Why do i care about some stinky 10 year old ferrari???) and is far inferior to the original Assetto Corsa (AC2 hype) let alone Forza 8 which has a much more advanced physics simulation engine (Using multi-threads and using more data points vs any other vehicle simulator released to date) You call ACC a simulator many times, and point out how Forza isnt a simulator?? What?? By definition both are "sim racing video games" and listed as such in every marketplace such as steam - your comments made me cringe Why is the fov so low in acc compared to forza? The game looks squatty, the interior of acc isnt simulated and appears to be a 2d graphic overlay, really weird how the body of the car moves up and down but the camera and interior stay static. Lighting and track detail are far superior in Forza as shown in your video, the cobbled old mess UE4 engine delivers poor graphics In Forza force feedback settings can be tuned in-game as well as per vehicle - if you vehicle feels light, it means you didn't tune it properly Overall, this comparison came off as very snobby and snarky with bias towards ACC, and my experience has been the opposite of yours

      I think you missed the point of this video as I prove here Forza isn't misrepresenting GT3 pace. I'm from simulators like ACC, AC, iRacing etc. where people frequently refer to Forza as a "simcade" and take things very seriously. Yet I've proven on multiple occasions across these sims that Forza laps extremely closely and makes you question the biased outlook many have. I've made a series of these where I compare each "sim" to Forza using different cars/tracks and almost every case shows Forza doesn't deserve to be overlooked.

Forza is even marketed as a sim racer en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forza_Motorsport_(2023_video_game) "A sim racing video game" You won't convince cringe teenagers with facts on youtube when they all watch chinese tiktok anyway I have watched some of your new videos and enjoy it - however I think a more accurate premise is sim racer vs sim racer (Similar to something like digital foundry but more driving focused) rather than sim racer vs childs game (Which seems to be your approach) I own a pc with a 4090 so I can take full advantage of forza ray tracing - I can't play ACC anymore because it feels so cartoony. Forza graphics will be even farther ahead once they release RTGI

    Lapped cars fighting the leader at least is realistic, most drivers in real life do not want to go a lap down. Though they should be much better at overtaking. The AI at longer stints seems to be better than FM7 at least.

      Yeah I mean not every driver should jump out of the way like F1's blue flag rule but likewise they shouldn't race the leader when they're beaten either. That behaviour is what's causing the indecisive driving by the front runners causing them to get held up. I won't yield if they're being awkward but the AI will try anything (including lose 10s per lap) to avoid collisions with each other.

    We we'll still need to wait quite a while before games start using engines like this. They are very heavy on cpu, and that's not what you want in most of casual games. The only games I can see using it are hardcore simulators. Another reason would be consoles. Beamng engine is not compatible with them, and there isn't any similar engine that works on consoles (I might be wrong, I'm not that much into consoles), and obviously you don't want to lose such a big part of the market. And even if you wanted to try to make that kind of engine for consoles, you would need to spend a lot of time optimizing it to handle that kind of cpu load. As much as I'd love to see at least some of the stuff beamng is capable of being put in other games, most of it just doesn't fit modern car games that target mass audience, and are mostly casual / semi-casual.

    It honestly kind of blows my mind that someone like Microsoft or Sony hasn't bought the tech to implement into their own IP. Beam is so ridiculously fun, and the customization is endless. Put this into Forza and watch it fly off the shelves.

      Main issue is manufacturer’s don’t want their cars to appear “destructible” in the media, its the whole reason Forza and GT damage models don’t show things like panels missing and broken bumpers and why Beam has no actual cars just homages to them, its all in the license agreement annoyingly

    Multiplayer is not a thing yet and the mods that do it are pretty bad. The engine is super optimised for singleplayer, even with too many AI the game stutters a lot. If the devs would tackle that problem i would play the crap out of it.

    Beamng just has too many variables to accurately replicate a real car. Small inaccuracies compound across countless elements which makes it near impossible to replicate a real vehicle. Abstracting a cars characteristics into fewer variables with simpler interactions will ultimately be more accurate, but perhaps less immersive and detailed. I love beamng, but it's akin to comparing a low resolution fluid simulation to a detailed and photoreal water shader.

      Yeah it's not perfect by any means, well what is, but it's one of those situations where I think this as a base engine with a specific game on top of it rather than a sandbox/all-in-one could really work. It could be wishful thinking as I wouldn't be doing the hard work 🤷😄

      I started back in racing games with the PS4 release of ACC, it was good for sure. AC wasn't "bad", but just a bit unpolished and lacking the mods that keep the PC version interesting & fresh after all this time.

    Playing both in a simagic mini, and with significantly more time in AC Pur than FM. I feel like FM does just play better with controller. I can't feel the tires load up and progressively go over limit like i can in AC. FM feels like the cars just have all the grip until they suddenly don't, its like they just let go and the grip falls off a cliff. Even though the customizing and such exist in FM, the driving experience in AC keeps me there. Now its just for AC2 to come out sometime this year hopefully.

      Snap! I'm using the Simagic Alpha Mini & P2000 pedals since Feb '22. Such a great setup, no regrets at all. I know what you mean about FM, I find I have very good and accurate idea what's going on... Until I don't 😆 It's possible to save slides but when the drop off happens that you describe, it still wants to spin even if you react quick. AC2 anticipation is building tentatively at this end, hope it's good 🤞

      @@hotcircuit I'm on the P1000 pedals, got them bundled. The base pedals and GT pro wheel were like 900 USD. I think I have had the same thing happen when turning in too. But it's no grip. Same corner, approximately the same speed, tires with the same laps, and just understeers into a tree. Feedback happens late enough to not be able to correct it either. Then in AC, RF2, iRacing, it's like the moment I turn in I know something is wrong and it needs to be corrected. Spent to much time fiddling with the FM settings and it still just feels weird. And that's before the stupid clutch shifting delay

      I love things like RSS Formula Hybrid & Formula Americas that are lovingly crafted to name two of many. The work that's been done on CM & Pure just makes it look astonishing for replays and cinematics. BUUUUUT I do find it a pain to keep up with updates, or when I find a lousy track conversion.

      @@hotcircuit same here, sometimes it felt like torture lol. Took me an hour to get it to work again after a month of not playing. After getting the races to work, I couldn't get AC Evoluzione to work so I gave up. At this point I'm just waiting for AC 2 in hopes they include the most important features like a mods hub and to generally accomodate to people who have spent so much time modding the game to perfection.

    AC is a real simulator, especially with custom shaders patch. Forza is a watered down simcade that cant compete with GT7

      CM/CSP/Pure for cinematics and immersion makes AC more 2024 than most other driving games out there right now. I wish I loved it more, I really do. I'll spend hours driving and watching the gorgeous replays, then leave it for 3 months again for no reason.

    I love Forza for the cool Multyplayer, the Mix of Qualy& Training is what love so much🖖 ACC feels more Sim, but there is no Award ceremony. That is so boring💩 Playing both on SeriesX with Fanatec Podium Porsche GT3 Wheel & DDpro. Great experience on both Games. I like both👍

      I had Assetto Corsa on PS4 before I got a PC and couldn't see what the fuss was about. The default game is painfully no-frills in the menus. I remember the first time I played, I didn't have cool down laps on so it just ended when you cross the finish line with no fanfare or clear indication 😆

    i noticed that the tracks are different forza looks like the tracks are too narrow and the radius of the corners are not as sharp as they should be ac radius is more spot on.

      Yeah I forgot the memo that not all FM tracks are based on laser-scans, a bit like F1 23. Some are, but there's a good chance Barcelona isn't here. Good spot 👍

      Yeah, when hunting down a good PC alternative to the likes of Forza and GT, regular road cars aren't so well represented. AC probably has more than most, especially if you're OK with hunting down decent mods but I totally see your point 😓

    I did play Forza again. If you don't take it seriously and don't really care what happens then you're more likely to enjoy the game. I know I do, The handling and physics are different Assetto Corsa is more realistic and is geared towards steering wheels. While Forza still feels a wee bit arcade and is geared towards controller.

      Yeah I don't take this too seriously. It seems serious I guess on the surface but I'm strict to only run my best-of-10 laps rather than get too sweaty as it's just a fun comparison. This has been the biggest difference in terms of car/track relative times of all the ones I've done but you're 100% right that Forza is a more friendly and more of a jump in and play title. I enjoy both on different levels, although AC came out at a time I wasn't gaming much so I don't have the same attachment level that many do. For me that's ACC as seeing streamers play it in late 2019, early 2020 tempted me to buy a PC & rig.

      Yeah, I think that's how people are able to get quick times, its down to the engine a physics, more a jump on game defos, I got AC back in 2015 with my first wheel and being playing for now almost...Jesus 9 years haha. But I was an avid Forza player before I got my PC. AC feels more grounded with the physics cars have weight, better tyre models. Forza even though it has strengths, and since its primarily going to be played on Xbox has softened physics, cars feel faster, its easier to string turns since its geared towards controller usage with limited precision, whilst a wheel can be more precise. That's especially evident when you compare track times since AC doesn't really assist you with steering whilst Forza does just a tiny amount though. @@hotcircuit

      I've played the likes of RFactor2, iRacing and ACC and I can confidently say Assetto Corsa is the arcade racer of PC sim racing. All the feedback you get on a wheel is too exaggerated and gamey to what a real car should do, it's laughable. The other games don't go overboard but AC is just FFB effects simulator for drift enthusiasts.

As I wasn't racing in 2014 to pick this up and fall in love with it, playing it now does feel more like a novelty than something I want to devote my time to competitively online. For me it doesn't feel as good as so many people say, but that's just one opinion 🤷

    After giving Forza a go (again) I really don't think they are apples-to-apples experiences. Assetto Corsa is a simulator with the ability to have wild fun throughout with tons of mods abound. Forza feels like more of a game to me, even with my super high-end wheel base and load cell pedals. It definitely tries its best to outgun it's role as a Simcade, but at the end of it all, it still feels/plays best with a controller and I honestly don't feel that Turn10 are ever going to want it to keep up with something like AC, ACC, RF2, AMS2, or any of those other pure simulators. It has one competitor on consoles, Gran Turismo 7, and that's okay. There's plenty of competition and awesome racing to be had in Simcade titles. Your driving, as always, is brilliant and I look forward to your next video!

      AGREED with @j.o.t.b3017. You've NAILED EXACTLY what Forza truly is! As MUCH as many of us WANT it to be a "simulator", IT JUST ISN'T! It's sits VERY WELL in the console controller space, among the best, and it does what it's supposed to do in THAT space.

      I do agree with you, really the purpose of this series was to see how well the car performance was modelled in relation to what people would consider a proper sim. The results generally have been surprisingly close in laptime, so like you say it comes down to other factors like Forza is better for folks without a wheel, AC is better for modding, ACC/iRacing are better for multiplayer competition etc. etc. I appreciate your feedback and time watching the vids 👍

      If Turn10 or PD decide to go the full simulator route, none of the aforementioned PC games would be relevant 😅. They can't compete with AAA in content, graphics, UI, career mode and overall presentation. The smaller studios should be thankful.

      @@kak8895 Because AAA gaming is catching a lot of heat right now, I'm not 100% on how serious you are so I'll come at it from both angles. An AAA studio that went full-in on making the best thing out there would easily have the resources to acquire the best talent and pick up costly car/track licenses for sure. However, at this point in time I get the feeling we'd be more likely to get a heavily micro-transaction filled mess that took over a year to fix.

    Interesting results. From my experience, the overall FFB in AC is much more tactile than in Forza and I get much more feedback from small road bumps. But maybe my Forza settings are just bad. You have to have studied physics or smth to fully understand the them xD I like the simple FFB slider in AC much more. Would be interesting to see if the results would be the same when comparing to ACC.

      Yeah you feel very connected in AC, it's definitely one of its best features. I've got some good feeling Forza settings I will drop into a video soon, but it's just for better detail and control (imo), it doesn't suddenly become AC or rFactor 2. Funnily enough, an ACC comparison to Forza was the second video I posted on this channel 😉

    You going to be taking some heat for this one when the AC fanboys catch wind of this... The AC one looked maybe a little more draggy down the straight, it was not only slower but just didn't seem to want to speed up very quickly at a lot of points of the lap. Always love an HC investigation video!

      @@Blownpistonmotorsport It's good, and a slower time doesn't necessarily mean a less accurate representation of the real car 😇 The attachment to your car is excellent but it does legitimately share 2 things with Forza. Inconsistent kerbs, "not great" AI.

      what do you mean "makes ac looks and sound terrible"? in reality maybe its not the worst out there,but its definetly dated af,thats the semi main reason ac is not atracting me at all,i would rather take any other AAA racing game ,at the end of the day for me cars is all about looks,sounds,and since im not a real racing driver i dont really know how cars handles on a track so physics doesnt need to be 1/1 compared to irl

      Most cars in Assetto Corsa sound like UFOs. The reverb is laughable in many instances. They don't sound natural at all to actual engine rumble. That's not to say Forzas is better because it certainly isn't.

      @@kak8895 To be fair this car does sound good in Forza imo, which might be amplified by hearing these side by side. Of course, not all 500+ cars are going to sound great or accurate, but that'd be a tough ask. Reverb off the pitwall etc. features in ACC too, which doesn't feel quite right in the cockpit. Generally, the sound in ACC is excellent though but that's because they have a specific pool of cars to work on.

      u can make it look and sound really good. but of course. u have many track skin mods, tree mods or even 2k and 4k versions of tracks and thousands of sound mods. but its still from 2014. But with custom shaders patch, physics are close to unbeatable. and AC2 this year will show every company how a real racing simulator is done

    I think there's reasonable justification that setup tweaks and more practice could pull the Assetto Corsa time down towards the 1m40s, but it's certainly easier to handle out of the box in Forza, but still check my tentative throttle & braking traces even in that! Thanks for your support 🧡

      To help towards your claim. I was racing in Forza with a steering wheel. Doing the touring car class at the nurburgring GP my fastest time in the Audi lms was 1:09:9 and the guy Infront of me was 1:08:4. I'm a pretty fast driver so I thought that was not bad considering the real life fastest lap time set in a Porsche GT3 car is 1:08:32. That has over a hundred more horsepower than a Touring car. Now I don't know think the people who followed were using a steering but was placed 8th and all the other people above 7th were getting 1:02-05s. A full 3 seconds faster that the actual real world record. So that being said AC is more realistic with a steering wheel and Forza is more geared towards controller that being able to get ridiculous times.

      I can't remember if I had mentioned it on your other "comparison video" or not, but I've mentioned, in the past, that Forza has certain areas that are NOT exact to certain sections of an original track layout, EVEN THOUGH, they laser scan many of the modern tracks. Certain tracks have a replicated zone, which cause a time discrepancy, to give those tracks a deliberate feel, or look, to coincide with it's overall theme.

      @@750li_Behemoth In ACC I was generally 1.5-2s off alien/esports at my best. For example I could do mid-2.17s at Spa which would smash most people in a public lobby, meanwhile the pros were getting high 2.15s. Those top times were faster than real life pole at the time (2.16 in 2022) and Forza performed very closely to ACC at Suzuka when I tested it so they seem close to each other but not necessarily real life in all scenarios. What I'm really saying I guess is that Forza isn't necessarily producing realistic laptimes but neither are the sims at all circuits. Some are very close though. I'm not being disagreeable, it's just an interesting talking point for me so you got me started 😂

    AI improvements are really great. Surely not 100% there yet, but overall more than just a small step into the right direction as AI felt atrocious before and now it's OK-ish imho.

      I'd say it was unplayable before, but now it's of a better standard in close-quarters. You can still force it to overdrive off the track and I'm not certain if it's better over longer race distances yet but it's a good start.

    playing on a series x and it still crashes every other race after wasting time qualifying right as the starting grid lines up. done with this half assed game. uninstalled for the 3rd and final time bring on assetto corsa 2.

      I can get behind AC2, even though we know next to nothing about it. I am realistic that Content Manager has given us so much in AC beyond what Kunos did, but hopefully they've learned great things from ACC/LFM/CM and will bring some of it by default.

    I can now go around the outside of the AI without being rammed 100% of the time, so much better to drive against. I don't think the AI was actually aware of the player before, I think that is the main fix they made.

    Well I’m not effing happy with it , my game is broken now , can’t proceed in career mode , it’s stuck in a cycle or pause resume mode , it won’t race ffs , how many times has this game been broken 3 for me , one with not saving, and then I had audio issues , and now this

      There's a few people I've heard from like you where the game is hopelessly always broken, or crashes all the time. As somebody who's only had a handful of crashes - so the bugs or shortcomings of the game itself are a bigger deal - it never seems to be on the same hardware combination 🤷🏼
