I'm a "sad ham" according to the 13 people who only operate GMRS radios, and those who can't pass a licensing test LMAO. Fun times.
Feel free to reach out if you're looking for help with radio licensing information or any type of radio advice, I'm happy to help... or wait... "sad" to help hahahaha.
I'm admittedly not an expert in all things radio, however I do enjoy learning, and that's what radio is all about, learning and experimenting.
My opinions are my own and will probably offend you at some point. Congrats.

No.45?
9mm or 40
I’ve been a Trucker for 43 years. I have a CB in my truck but CB IS DEAD!

lol what you shouting these from a red Ryder 😂😂 I got Diablo heavy running out at 1290ftp and will almost punch clean through a 4x4 post
@@fishrrelaxing9361 everyone is proud of you
That’s awesome man. Yea Global Warming might be a fake hoax that Al Gore perpetrated in the 1990s. However, what’s not fake is all the $$$$$ he made from it.
21 feet of cheap coax on a piece of PVC works very well but it's also lossy and you're adding another 21 ft of length to your coax so you're lost in dB will be that percentage greater
Thank you for keeping it simple. 🎉
The IC-718 is my primary radio. The IC-718 has a 1990's design and has been in production since 2000 or before. The first ARRL review was in 2000. It was temporarily discontinued in 2022 or 2023, but has returned with an upgrade to the I/F filtering system and now has digital filters, instead of the mechanical filters that it used to require. With the old version, INRAD occasionally has the optional CW and SSB filters in stock, but you can't depend on it. With the new version, you don't need the extra filters, but you pay the cost. The old versions were sold brand new for between 500 and 700 dollars, but the new version is over 800 minimum. The radio is basic, simple and robust and the 600+/- dollar cost made it a great choice for new (or older) hams on a budget. The new version puts its cost up where some vastly more modern and radios with far more capabilities are available for just a little more money, like the IC-7300. The IC-718 has one vulnerability, the receive front end is quite susceptible to nearby lightning and static discharges. I highly recommend the Morgan Systems M300 type lightning protection, which has the direct to ground protection on the antenna side which takes surges to ground before it even gets to the rest of the M300 protection circuit. Polyphasor protection doesn't have that and I learned the hard way... 3 times! After I installed the M300, I haven't had any more damage. The most equilivent radio that matches and surpasses the IC-718, that is still in the price range, is the Yaesu FT-891. AND it includes 6 meters, FM modulation and digital I/F filtering, so you don't have to buy additional filters. I have one for my portable and mobile use. I still keep my IC-718 and backup IC-718 for my primary rig and always will. After 50 years as a ham, I prefer to keep rigs that are simple and basic to use.
Im suprised its not used more often its basically 10 meters QRP if anyone follows that. Plus they look way cooler than ham rigs.
GMRS and HAM ht's are just two small pieces to an overall comms plan. They can be very useful. They also can be completely useless depending on what you want to do with them. A good comms plan should employ more than just HAM and GMRS. I liken it to having different types of firearms for different purposes. A sub-compact might be nice for concealed carry, but it is useless if you want to shoot a deer at 150 yds.
Man I dig your vids but you've been in the game long enough to not sound like a robot that's very nervous lol. Keep up the good work and relax man and be a lil more chill I think we would all like that.
@@michael5825 appreciate the honest feedback. It wasn't nerves so much as it was a bit of a nightmare for me to edit and get the voiceover timing all correct, so I just focused on the data haha.
No
So it's so great you want to sell it. You explained nothing about the radio.
Don't waste your time with radios. If an emp doesn't destroy your walkies, or k the repeaters arent down you ain't be able to use those repeaters as everyone else will also be trying. You're best bet is using line a garmin inreach product. Satellite takes all of those concerns out of the equation. Communicate via text. It works great
Hurricane Helene in Western NC has proven the need for radios as well as analog scanners. It’s the only thing that worked for nearly a week, and still to this day in some areas. Luckily, the Mount Mitchell tower was still up.
You have to think about it. As if what round is more convenient to the public. 9mm and .40 are really convenient so is .357 and .38 spl not to many folks have .357sig let alone 5.7 rounds. So in my experience and honesty opinion I’m going with the 9mm. There is a lot of different types of 9mm ammunition to choose from.
JSB hades
Haven’t done POTA yet, but I have the exact same setup. Hamsticks are the 10 and 20 meter band so far on HF, having fun…
Cool💨🤜🏼👍🏾👍🏻👍🏿👍🏼👍🏻 💯
Was surprised the G90 didnt have any NR built in.
I'm trying to know.... but all i find.... are click bait... videos...
This is a choke only , correct ? Not a transformer balun ?
Wow!
Don't do this with foam dialectic the center conductor migrates through the foam towards the shield.
I'm Curious- Could I Use A 5.5 mm Balls Bearing In My 22 Pellet Gun Since The Pellets Themselves Are Also 5.5 mm. ????
Never seen a 400 grain 30 cal bullet
Nice👍
thanks for the video instructional. i see that it is possible to get PL-259/SO239 RG8x jumpers now. that way you don't have to use an adapter to join the feed line. so, would this work ok at legal limit? i'm assuming that it would.
Ham newbie here…and this is very interesting. Thanks for posting. I’m learning, so let me ask this question: how does this differ from a couple dozen coax wraps around a PVC pipe (which is what I suspect is in the old MFJ thingy)?
@@elmoreglidingclub3030 it's really just a different version of the same thing, just much smaller. Ultimately you won't really know how any of them affect your application without testing. Coax coil wrapping is nice because you can "tune" resistive / capacitive characteristics with more or less coils. You can do that with different toroid mixes or # of wraps with these, just to a lesser extent.
Cleaning I get, polishing not so sure. Its effective time is not that great as the barrel leads up very quickly and a leaded barrel brings its own advantages. Also constant polishing wears the barrel and rifling . Thanks for the vid .
I had that chrony first and it wouldnt even work for me lol had to get the caldwell
Agreed. So many have dual band handheld radios but don't practice using them, even within their "group." Then they fumble around on wrong channels and without proper protocol.
Which walk ee talk ee can go 100 miles?
I did a similar thing using the case top and fan from an old PC atx power supply - if the air is going upwards just turn the fan over to mount. 😁
Love the throw on table skit ❤

You had me in the first half.
You notice any RFI from that laptop fan? Does it have an on/off switch or do you just unplug the USB? These are two of the complaints I'm seeing about the Radioddity G90-H1 cooling fan bracket.
@@dadthejedi I haven't noticed any. I have ferrites on the power cable to the USB plug tho, so that may be why
.40 S&W because i can use my USP and i carry her every day, wouldn't trust another gun to protect me if i needed it, if i could only have a pistol that is.
If i buy one of these do i really need an Eton 750 or a high end Grundig receiver just to listen to shortwave? or does this radio do all the shortwave frequencies already out of the box?
@@FutureEyesOnly-be3do HF ham radios such as this one generally receive approximately 1.8 through 30 or so MHz on AM or SSB. A really high end SW radio will receive on a much greater range of frequencies as well as more modes. If you're not interested in transmitting IMO a good SW is the better choice
I never tried the destroyer pellets
357 sig all day
Best radio I've ever had, qrp - qro, home or mobile even bicycle/ p here, with filters great rx. 73 zl3xdj
Would like to know what kind of tweaks you recommend for the radio?
I am a licensed ham operator and have several of the uv5r and just recently got a uv5rm and on high it’s 8 watts I programmed the first channel as simplex and was surprised when I was able to talk to someone that was 7 miles away with no trouble at all and I am not on a mountain anyway there good if you want to be able to talk to someone out on your farm or in a car close to you.
Thank you. I own one. I love it. Even though they did not have waterfall at that time.
For an extra six bucks i got the fan, the digital interface, and a hard shell case, less than what i was expecting for shipping, thank you Radiotity!
Preppers learn HF and build a portable pack out and go make some POTA activations!!!!
U gotta set the level and the width of thr supression filter .. i set to 5 and 7
