I own both of these rigs and they're both excellent radios but suited to different purposes. The G90 is a near perfect portable rig with a built-in tuner that will handle almost any antenna installation. The 590SG is my main radio that I use at home and is a joy to use due to its highly ergonomic control layout. I'll be keeping both while most of my other radios will be going out the door.
You didn't show the b/w filter of the 590sg. The G90 was 2.6 but the 590sg sounded wider. I've owned both of those radios and the early firmware of the G90 had plenty of bugs and it mostly got better with later versions. I ended up selling both radios but I miss the 590sg. I have the 7300 now. I sure miss the 590sg's great audio.
Indeed I should have showed that. Believe it or not I run the 590 narrower, usually between 2.3 and 2.4. The speaker is the weak link here on the G90. Plugged into a good external spkr or headphones it's a game changer Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the 7300 also
Thanks for that video, but let me give you some advice. How a transceiver A/B comparison becomes more usefully? - Use USB-Sound-Card output from both transcievers. - Optional, use external, equal loudspeaker, on each. - Switch each 5 second, between A and B transceiver. - Switch during THE SAME station is talking. - Please take this as a constructive critic. Maybe you will find some more or better facts? Best Regards 73 Mark
Great observations. The 590SG meter is weird, and doesn't work when the AGC is off and or the RF gain is low. The G90 is much better with the AGC off, so they both stayed off for the comparison
Menu 37 on the 590 is for equalizing the receive audio. Not sure if the G90 has that feature but I would think the 590 could be made to sound miles better?
Correct, the G90 doesn't have any EQ functionality, and the 590 RX eq is on the HB2 setting in this video which boosts higher frequencies, but doesn't attenuate lower frequencies like the HB1 setting. I find it contributes to the most "full" sounding audio (in general). While the (less than ideal) Pixel 7 onboard mic this was recorded on doesn't paint the whole picture, I'm happy with the RX on both of these units considering I live in QRM hell here in solar farm suburbia hi hi
@@whiskeysix Exactly... phone mic plus RUclips's audio compression makes it less than desirable. One can get ideas but that's about it. 73 thanks for a civil conversation. We all need more of that.
Likewise sir. Also I forgot to mention the noise reduction circuit is turned off on the 590 since the G90 doesn't have one. Makes a big difference! They're both just using the digital noise blanker function.
Absolutely. Besides a fancy display, nothing below the TS590 price point has more features and capabilities... Unless connecting a mouse or monitor is a total game changer for you haha.
@@forgetyourlife Everthing! lol. Direct entry from the front panel. 2x antenna inputs plus RX in. The amazing build quality. The 12-band graphic equalizer that doesn't distort like the 3-band parametric equalizer in the DX10. The fact that it didn't lock up like the DX10 STILL DOES even after firmware updates. The fact that the fans hardly ever came on and the DX10s won't shut up! The enjoyment of use vs the frustration of use (due to the DX10's dreadful ergonomics that has me reaching for the keylock button every few seconds). I haven't even scratched the surface yet - but you get the picture. The DX10's RX/TX performance is truly excellent, but for me that's not enough. The 7300 & 590 are both very different to each other, but they share a common theme... they both go about their business in a logical and effortless way. The DX throws logic out of the window and replaces it with a massive dose of screwy!
@@McRocking sounds like I remember. Sold the dx10 got the 710. It’s a bit better but not much and has new issues of its own. Sold the 710 as well and just sitting on the 891 until I can find a used 590 I guess.

Well said! Thanks for watching
Interesting comparison between pure SDR style transceiver and a classic tried and true old school transceiver, always wanted one of those Kenwood’s 😊
Well said. Thanks for watching!
I have a G90 and have had a lot of fun with it but, the Kenwood will be my next rig.
I can appreciate both, however the TS-590SG is tough to beat as a base station rig
great video on the receive comparison of these two radios
Appreciate your comment and thanks for watching!
I'll take the kenwood please.

Also why agc off ? Just curious
On a positive note you didn't cover the speaker of the 590.

Since I've got you here... I see you're into SWL. What's your favorite bang for the buck SWL radio?
No answer from him so I’ll say Tesun PL-990x

What antenna are u using ?
This time Goliath has won💪
Would you buy the 590 now in 2023 at the current 1599$ with all the dx10’s and 7300’s for cheaper?
Absolutely. Besides a fancy display, nothing below the TS590 price point has more features and capabilities... Unless connecting a mouse or monitor is a total game changer for you haha.
I own a 7300 and DX10 - the biggest mistake I made was selling the 590SG to buy the DX10 !!
@@McRocking interesting, what do you miss most?

I have exactly same set up and enjoy both radios😅
Can't go wrong with either!
Such a good video. I like content like this

Why with preamp on ? No need for grab noise and increase it I guess...
My 590 wouldn't produce over 55 Watts on SSB. PEP Meter was used and verified with a Bird. My Icom 7410 blew it away. Verified by receiving stations.
you don't use a linear?
@@McRocking No
@@maddog57ful Then 100W PRP won't "blow it away", it's only 3dB which is barely noticable. Buy an Acom and let that do all the work.
The g90 sounds better
For the price it's quite impressive.
