DND5E Advanced Character Guide: The Tortle Raging Tank
Learn how to build this Advanced character for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition
Today’s build is the Tortle Raging Tank, a Totem of the Bear Barbarian, Circle of the Moon Druid, Multiple class. An unarmored Tank relying on Wildshape and Rage Resistances for insane Damage Mitigation..
The Tortle may seem slapstick at first but they contain true Tank Pedigree. With the ability to hold their breath underwater for an hour, natural claws, and a natural armored shell they make a great racial option for those class types that face casting restrictions on armor selection. It removes the need to boost strength for armor requirements, allowing more dedication to Dexterity to boost initiative. A perfe...

    Great video. Detailed and straight to the point. Love the fact that you really tested this out and are offering the real details of how it plays. Would like to see a level breakdown, feats breakdown (not sure if I missed it). Also, having more visual contrast between different segments of your build breakdown would help with legibility. Changing up the backgrounds, or even some clips of you moving around some minis during the combat explanations would help a lot. Either way you’ve won a subscriber.

    The ruling on green flame blade & booming blade don’t make sense, range of self(you are the origin of the spell) makes perfect sense, but as you use the weapon as a material component, and make a melee attack with it, why not just remove the ruling on 5ft radius“ & just leave it at making a melee attack with the weapon” so if it has reach, you get to use your reach, & if you are a bug bear you get to use your extra reach, it just sounds dumb that you can imbue a reach weapon with magic, but you can’t use the weapon for it’s intended purpose of making an attack with reach, why would the magic stop working as soon as part of the weapon goes more than 5ft from you while you are still holding it?

    I sort roles as: - (battlefield) control - Tank: Attracting attacks while being able to survive that - Damage dealers (preferably both sustained and burst damage options as well as Area damage. Lacking in any of these departments is a huge issue and must be complemented by others doing it) - Healing/resurrections - Support buffs (this should be done by several). Aura and bless are the most important buffs period. Even DPS or tank will STRUGGLE to find anything that is more efficient than concentrating on a bless or having that aura of protection up. Thus, play paladin as a tank. You are able to bring people up. You can take punishment. You give people aura of protection. You are able to dish out damage. You attract attention by simply being a peerless threat on the battlefield in almost all departments except for area damage.

    An unusual damage dealer I've seen is at least 5 levels of Hexblade, then Zealot Barbarian. Cast Armor of Agathys before battle, while you're raging you'll half *most* damage against those temporary hitpoints. Other spell slots can be used to with the Eldridch Smite invocation, even while raging. With Reckless Attack you'll almost always have initiative. Pact of the Blade gets you a two handed weapon using your Charisma and Great Weapon Master brings the damage. Can be paired with Elven Accuracy. The invocations Maddening Hex or Cloak of Flies can used while raging. Improved pact weapon is also good at low levels.

  • @Wouldyoukindly4545
    @Wouldyoukindly4545 Год назад

    The one thing is, the hexadin as built is really feat intensive. But it is also one of the builds that benefits the most from elven accuracy. So the question is whether giving up a feat and spending another is worth losing out on asi/feats. Personally I'd consider trading out sentinel. If every character gets a feat at 1st level I'd suggest half-drow and elven accuracy right off the bat.

    • @uncommon-arcana8980
      @uncommon-arcana8980 Год назад

      Interesting; I would like to play test that out to see how well it works. We added the Sentinel Feat because as we were engulfed in darkness fighting with a few of our summoned undead at our side, the DM would target the our summoned over the player because the attack roll was not at disadvantage which would trigger the Sentinels attack of opportunity for us, of course once this was used several times over several fights the DM would switch tactics to just rolling at disadvantage. Some would even try moving out of Darkness which would also trigger Sentinel again giving us a reaction attack. Reaction Attacks happen often in this build and I am not certain that rerolling a dice would test out better but I think its worth playing side by side to see how well Elven Accuracy works.

Allowing Crossbow Expert to grant a free second attack with a hand crossbow and allowing the Sharpshooter feat to give both of those attacks a +10 to damage all for a mere bonus action is criminal. Incorrect. With spell Sniper, booming blade as well as green flame blade have their range extended to 10 feet. You can see this reflected in dndbeyond as well as RAW. This allows their use with weapons containing the "Reach" tag.

    • @codydwyerify

      I'm looking at it right now, and the range is still Self, and the area is 5ft. It even shows spell sniper applying to the spell, as it requires an attack role, but since self is essentially 0, doubling 0 is still 0. This is confirmed by Jeremy Crawford, even though that's not technically errata, it gives us the intent of the spell. I wish the spell just said "within your reach" instead of a radius of 5ft. Distance Spell and Spell Sniper only effect the range, not the radius of a spell. If you cast ice knife, it would go twice as far, but still only have a 5ft burst effect.

    I legit typed in Polearm Paladin thinking id never find a guide, and then this pops up, perfect, amazing, and exactly what I was looking for. Small suggestion, you have a lot of room to play with your UI I love that you use DnD Beyond but that give window more coverage so we can see it cleaner and follow along better IMO

    This sounds great… but the background and that choice of font doesn’t work. Every time I pause to carefully read the words blend into the background

      I'm working on the next guide now, let me complete that and I will darken the color and change the font. Look for an updated version.

      Bentron if you email at uncommonarcana@protonmail.com I will send you over a copy of the Full guide. That way you don't have to wait for the video upload. I am just getting this channel started and have a lot of guides coming up I value criticism to help me streamline my videos.
