Here is the long promised update on DDMs core code. This is a rewrite of much of the foundation of the game to make things ready to move forward. It's also the first time that I have really felt I was producing something that is production ready, as opposed to a starting place to be rewritten later. As you talked about the new segment system and holding in ram just what's needed at the moment: does that mean that you are constantly reloading parts of the game from the disk? Will that not cause many interrupts during gameplay?

    • @RavenWolfRetroTech
      @RavenWolfRetroTech 13 дней назад

      It will mean things like a loading screen when entering and exiting combat but the load sizes are small (about 4k) so it should only be an issue on a native 1541 without a turbo cartridge of some kind. The map itself is 64k so, like many games of the time, sections have to be loaded as you move around but it should be pretty quick.

      Right now I have enough feature creep to fight as it is so I am deferring any ports until after the game is done and out there. Then I'll see where to go next. I am testing on the 128D in 64 mode. Back in the day I used 128 mode in 80 columns to edit source and compile but it still had to be in 64 mode to run.

      @@RavenWolfRetroTech Totally get it. I asked the Eye of the Beholder guys the same question and they somehow got it in there (in C64 mode, no idea how) but they also were going the full-blown Cart-Storage route, never trying in a million years to stay confined to a single floppy disk. Very excited to see and play DDM someday in the future. Do you think you'll be releasing in 2025?

    • @RavenWolfRetroTech
      @RavenWolfRetroTech 13 дней назад

      I know how to enable 2MHz on a 128 in 64 mode but the VIC-II can't handle that memory speed so I think all video has to be disabled first. As for the Floppy scope this is really a bucket list thing so I want to make the game I envisioned in 1984. Once its done then I may make some modernizations.

    • @RavenWolfRetroTech
      @RavenWolfRetroTech 13 дней назад

      I'm happy you like it. Right now its looking like it will be 2-3 d64 files or 1541 disks. I have an EZ Flash 3 but no Kung Fu Flash but plan on looking into making it work on them if possible but, for the time being, I'm just avoiding self modifying code to make it easier. TLDR: I'm planning for it but no promises. It will be playable on VICE though for sure since I'm using it for development.

    5x refactor to your input system? damn. is reusing your routines for key presses work in all of your different segments as a global routine?

    • @RavenWolfRetroTech
      @RavenWolfRetroTech 14 дней назад

      Each state has a table of key codes and addresses. When state is changed then the state machine just has to change the input pointer to the start of the table for that state. To add a new command to a state all I have to do is put the Keycode and the low and high bytes (actually just the source code label) of the entry address for that command. The actual code never changes now, just the data tables.

    Exciting to see yet another RPG in the making for our beloved C64! Funnily enough, I've also implemented rolling a die in my project, as it just feels right indeed :). Good luck with the memory management! I needed to implement swap modules and separate data and the engine as the whole code simply doesn't fit in memory anymore. Looking forward for more news!

    • @RavenWolfRetroTech
      @RavenWolfRetroTech 14 дней назад

      I know how you feel with the memory management. One of the first things I did when I got back into the old code was to put an end to having half a dozen separate files to load then a BASIC program to tie it all together. I will keep it all in RAM as long as I can but am already setup to deal with swapping files when the time comes.

    • @commocore

      @@RavenWolfRetroTech Big props for building the file management system that uses a floppy. As my project, initially designed in hi-res, become a heavy bitmap graphic oriented, I switched at some point from floppies to a cartridge release only. For my case, any disk drive device would die eventually if not the player first, who was waiting for stuff to load ;). So, great to see that your project kicks fully from a floppy, design-wise it's not an easy task. Keeping fingers crossed, I want to play it! P.S. I've played and finished Demon's Winter some time ago on C64, and I was actually quite astonished with short loading time for such an oldie game.

    • @RavenWolfRetroTech

    back when i had my 128 in the 80s (and before that a vic20) i was working on a game, which i 1/4 completed/realized. it was all in basic and likely would have needed ML to speed it up but for self-taught, it was decent.. i'd love to finish it. i was also messing around with a GEOS type graphical interface too but very very basic and slow, just to learn more coding. i so wish i had those old disks somewhere... i have a 128 and a 64 again and am running a bbs on the 64 and would like to get back into programming and game dev again. this has inspired me to do just that! even if its just for myself. did this game ever get finished if so where can i find it?

      @RavenWolfRetroTech Месяц назад

      This definitely falls under the "I would need to dig in and see what is going on" to actually answer but I can tell you where I would start. First, if possible test the board in another Amiga. That will cut the problem space in half. My first gut reaction for problems with the Amiga motherboard would be to check the connections between the CPU socket and the Processor Expansion Slot. These can have damaged traces and are right in the area affected by battery leakage. The A2620 itself I have yet to have to actually do more than clean up and replace caps so if that is the issue it would be a matter of starting with the basics and checking that voltages and clocks are working and checking VERY closely for any physical damage to components.

      I checked the bags and they are 3"x5" usable, the actual height is 5 7/8"/ They are 4 mil bags because I find that the thinner 2-mil ones tend to tear when opening the zip-lock. The bins are acro-mills 30120 which say they are 4x4x12 inches. I see a 24 pack on sale on Amazon for 46.20 which isn't too bad if you need that many. I will add a link in the description.

    Awesome ideas!! Thank you, especially since I am just starting to build up my parts stock. It really helps to be able to organize efficiently from the start. You mentioned Bally…I have a Bally pinball machine. Love it.

      I'm glad its useful. I still have my Fireball II that I restored in the early 2000s but my arthritis says its time to sell.

    Is there any way to put a shelf under the desk for the 128's power bricks, so you can feed the power cables up from below? I have this arrangement on my desk as well as some self-made monitor stands, and it frees up a ton of desk space.

      I wanted to but there is a water shutoff and some other stuff I need easy access to. I considered a shelf but it would be really tight.

      What's up? I just tested the email in the channels about section and it is working (It had issues a few weeks ago). I don't post my email address openly in comments for obvious reasons.

    I kinda wonder if it's worth calling Fatigue FTG or FGE rather than FAT, my daughter (11) thought it was hilarious that the character would appear to gain weight as they ran around. Great work and thanks for the update!

    Might I suggest the use of "FTG" instead of "FAT" for fatigue?

      Yeah Matt, you might have something there! 😳 I updated it in the designer but it won't show up in the code until the next time I export all the screens which is a bit of a pain.
