The Simple Tool That Made Old Art so Great
19th-century art feels otherworldy realistic, but HOW did old masters paint or draw like that? The guide to drawing accurate proportions starts with something called a plumb line.
*Note*: I would actually use something heavier than a hex nut. It will keep the weight steady while suspended from your hand. I'll buy a proper plumb bob from the store for future purposes.

You Suck at Drawing Portraits (and so do I)

    Omg omg! I remember in my UCF drawing classes used string and plumb lines, conte and charcoal to draw and measure! Very helpful! I only recently found out that the string/ plumb line method was an old method.

    GREAT VIDEO! I always watch your videos as soon as I get the notification, you are skilled, funny, and great at getting information and tips across. I've learned many neat things from your videos, and I really enjoy learning more about the history of art and its masters. The way that you can bring forward alternate mindsets in order to humanize the greats, or inspire and motivate the upcoming is amazing. I really do love your work!

    I need one of these artist's storage carts. Merry Christmas Jake! I never got to use the plumb line in school but we did learn the academic method in college as a study in Anatomical Life Drawing at FIT from 2007-2011 using a copy of the Charles Bargue drawing course book from the 19th century and the sight and see method that Sargent and the rest of the artist used to draw and paint from life.

    I’ve been reading Harold Speed’s painting book lately, and he talks a lot in it about how you should interpret the form instead of being a photographic painter. Such an important and difficult lesson to learn. Also the talk of how those guys were so good reminded me of the latest Defunctland video about animatronics, “You will never do anything better than an 18th-century monk when you have a TV in your house.”

    I studied art in college, even got a Bachelors in Studio Art. When I was determining going to art school as a Highschool student I imagined that art colleges would have been like the French academies I saw in the history books, in my experience it wasn’t. Your average art student is fed post modernism and taught to scoff at academic drawing and painting in pursuit of “their creative voice”. It didn’t pay off for my classmates and it didn’t pay off for me; I’m a janitor.

    As a 3d animator its funny to see your process mirrors my process in some ways. If you lose yourself in the details without having a strong foundation you end up having a "finished" work that feels off. The details are distracting and prevent you from seeing the issues with the foundation. Sometimes the only way to learn from it is to start over. In a way it also mirrors what I have learned from competitive games like overwatch. Every loss is a chance to learn something, as long as you live there will always be a chance to improve. There are no mistakes, only happy accidents. But if you don't learn from those happy accidents, you are going to make the some happy accidents over and over again. That might make you unhappy.

    Naturally talented people is not nonsense and school is absolutely not required to be a great painter.

    • @billy-lanhthach5671
      @billy-lanhthach5671 10 часов назад

      Well, I'm pretty sure Jake meant that natural talent is not what makes an artist great. It's simply how skilled they are. That level of skill comes from study and practice even with natural talent. School is THE place to study and practice but you're not wrong it's not a absolute requirement. For naturally talented people, it's nonsense in the sense that their natural talent is the X factor of what they do.

    • @thechannelofultimatedestiny
      @thechannelofultimatedestiny 9 часов назад

      I think it’s interesting that people who accept the idea of talent and reject it seem to do so for the same reason. For the people who accept the idea of talent I suspect that they feel empowered by the idea that they could have an intrinsic quality about them that makes them able to create great work without having to do the hard work and attend expensive schools. For people who reject the idea of talent I imagine they feel empowered by the idea that people who do great work and others are only separated by time and effort. They don’t like the idea that certain people are born with abilities that are out of reach of others simply due to genetics or early experiences outside their control. I think we tend to believe whatever is more comfortable for us, I personally lean towards the anti talent viewpoint. I think talent exists but that so few of us actually do the work to reach the full potential of our talent that in practice hard work and effort can win given enough time and opportunity.

    Colour theory video please. Why are people making it so complicated? It's just paint. Mix some sh....t together and see what happens. Add red, blue, yellow, white, or black depending on how it looks and what one needs. Maybe try thinking of black and white as colours instead of value adjustments.
