Excellent thoughts about Bouguereau, best on the whole internet. So underappreciated painter nowadays. I read somewhere that at maturity he worked whole day every day for months at a crazy speed and very precise. The ultimate workaholic; love his paintings. :)
My god, it always drove me insane at art school how my teachers scoffed at Boguereau when i cited him as my inspiration. Can't recall them ever even giving a reason for their opinions.
If you define success by recognition of others you may not reach that peak. If you define it by putting in the work, learning along the way and perfecting your craft toward the limit of your abilities ..you live on that peak.
When I learned about the Bouguereau glazing technique in painting, I just thought the technique is a way to perfect light or at least close to how we see light. It actually is more efficient when applied on digital painting because there are layer blending modes and clipping Paint a decent Light and Shadow values then worry about the color later, that's how I understood it
great presentation on an unduly maligned figure. I was encouraged, falsely, to think of the academic artists as rigid dogmatists- that ironically- by dogmatic modernists, who were evidently projecting.

Unfortunately, it's spelled Bou*gu*ereau, and "gu" is universally pronounced as a hard "g" in French.
