Fall Update | What Season Is It? | Antique & Garden Showcase

The Fall Update has been a few weeks in the works. I started working on the video right after the remnants of Hurricane Helene passed through this area. Well, the video did have a twist that I was not expecting. Kudos to you for rolling with the punches of 2024 and looking forward to a fresh, new year. Good to hear you laugh about it - every time you pull up in your driveway you'll get a chuckle. Life is good and the lights will look beautiful at Christmas.🎄

    From where I sit out here in RUclips land - I think extending the driveway/island garden bed would be more proportionate to the expansive space you have available. Almost like a blank canvas waiting to be painted. This year was the first time I leaned into the chili peppers, purple kale, fall black eyed susans and the likes for my Fall planters and was really pleased. The orb with soft twinkling lights will look beautiful in the antique urns. Nice to see you back!

      Yes, the driveway island extension is in the thought-process-phase. Along with possibly rebuilding the deteriorating entrance posts, reconfiguring the front walk and possibly a driveway gate at some point. It's one of those things I would like to be one-and-done with all of them!!!

    Neat things. I don't collect one type of thing. The things I collect are just items that catch my interest. I think the first real item that caught me was a French bronze mantle sculpture from the late 1800s on a black marble or slate base. I saw her when I walked in and I fully intended on not buying her. I walked through the entire store and just couldn't get this piece off my mind. As we were about to leave I just couldn't leave her behind and decided to buy her at half price. I spent $100 on her but she proudly sits on my shelf. I carried her in my lap across multiple states because we didn't have any other spot. I don't know this specific item's history and I've searched countless times over the 4 years I've had it but I have never found a match except for one time. But unfortunately that post is gone and they also didn't know the history of it. Since then I bought a French spelter statue from the 1890s that was converted to a table lamp in the 1930s. I have also branched out to postcards and old photographs. I don't know the history on any of these items except for a little on the postcards that do have writing. I have an 1800s stereoscope I was able to find information on and it sent me down a rabbit hole that ended with me making my own cards for it using historical photographs of the area I live in that I found online. My most recent finds were two Eastlake parlor chairs that I got for $7. The Eastlake style is by far my favorite furniture style and I couldn't pass it up especially knowing similar pieces go for hundreds. I have a love for old Victorian doorknobs I got my first recently from my grandmother's garage. I have family heirlooms as well. My great grandfather's mantle clock that I found was made in the 1890s and my great great grandmother's china cabinet that she built herself. And I have a few restoration projects. I'm restoring a very neglected mogul style lamp that had 3 different spliced rewires the oldest being from the 1920s and a beautiful bridge lamp that I am rebuilding from antique lamp parts I find. I love talking about my finds because they bring me so much joy. Id like to someday own an old house and just fill it with antiques. I'm already collecting for it even though that day is probably far away.

      Thank you! It's been a couple of years since I've done any color match staining. I don't like doing it when it's humid (which has been practically never this summer). Well, you've had some unexpected twists and turns this summer but glad to see everything back on track. The east side garden and landscape looks beautiful especially once the grass takes hold. It was a weird growing season from the start. And, somehow that usually sets a pattern for the entire season around here. Helene was pretty wild here... I can only imagine southeast of here. All is well here - just lots more debris cleanup. I think there are leaves covering every inch of the back of the house 😂. The East Side is finished for this year... it will be a nice continuation project next year once the foundation plants settle-in. Have a good week!

    • @antiquegardenshowcase
      @antiquegardenshowcase 3 месяца назад

      The way to tell the age (on a Ball jar) is by the way that "Ball" is signed on the side of the jar. The style of the script will give you the age range of the jar. There are many charts available on-line. Just do an internet search for Ball Jar Age chart and compare the signature on the side of your jar. Hope this helps! 😊

    Things are looking fabulous! Dare I ask what was the fate of the mole?

    • @antiquegardenshowcase
      @antiquegardenshowcase 3 месяца назад

      Well, several things were tried: 1. Molemax - I used a 5lb bag and two sprinkle cans to try and run it out of the yard. 2. Ultrasonic stakes - I installed one on both sides of the yard (and those ran out most of the others). 3. We mixed up the castor oil solution and sprayed once things got bad... still no luck getting it to move. 4. We had a natural predator move in (fox), in the field behind us and we were hoping it would take care of it. While it got close, it never managed to get it. 5. We did not want to use a poison, for the fact of a natural predator getting hold of a poisoned rodent. So, after consulting friends, neighbors, area golf courses, etc. the best solution was a kill trap. At this point, we've had hundreds of dollars of damage and spent hundreds of dollars trying to get it to move out. Probably not the solution anyone wants to hear, but know that all other options were exhausted with no effect. In fact, we had a neighbor hire a company to set traps up all over their yard it became so bad. If they are not causing damage, I do leave them alone. However, this one was on a vandalism mission! Issues it caused: Erosion in the side yard (need for fill dirt), decimation of the oriental poppy garden, collapse of part of our drainage field, additional plant loss/damage and nearly caused a portion of the fence to collapse. Thankfully, all of the aforementioned things (like the supersonic stakes) can stay in place and hopefully stop a problem before it starts anymore!!!

  • @marybeth4002

    Yay! It looks like you've turned the corner on your situation and have made great progress in your garden and landscape. New grass is growing and you are moving ahead with your plans. That was built with a whole "garden in motion" theme for butterflies, pollinators, hummingbirds, etc. I always appreciate your comments. Thanks, again!!! 😊

    Well, it's been two days since you posted this video, and this morning here east of Richmond it poured down rain! I hope you got rain at your house, too. My little vegetable garden spot is actually a bit muddy! I'm so thankful to finally get some rain after all this time. It seemed to rain all around us, but never here except like you said, a little sprinkle here and there that didn't even settle the dust. I've been watering a lot just to keep plants alive and I dread seeing my next water bill. I'm so sorry about the mole damage. I've never seen them do that much destruction anywhere I've ever lived. I hope we get more rain this week so our lawns and plants can do better and we can take a break from watering every single day.

    As far as no rain I feel you! We are running sprinklers all day long at 2 hours in each area at a time. The only nice thing is that I haven't heard the constant roar of lawn mowers for over 3 weeks now. This year I planted my tomato plants in oversized plastic containers with the bottoms cut out. Using "oppressive" to describe the weather we've had recently is very accurate. Between the temperatures in the mid to upper nineties and the humidity, I haven't been able to do much gardening. My next door neighbor has even expressed their love of the driveway island. I do really love that planting space. It was so nice... the landscaping business I bought topsoil from gave me a discount toward a tree of my purchase. I tagged a weeping white spruce yesterday!!! I have never videoed at their place - always so busy! So excited to finally have one in the yard. 😊 I thought I would really miss the cypress more than I do. It was "closing up the space" so much it felt congested - and that's the access point to the backyard!

    So good to see you, Mark. Having the two trees removed does change the landscape but gives you a blank canvas now. Take advantage of the opportunity to be creative. Can't wait to see what your plans are. Take care and we'll see when time allows!

      Thank you! I have some sketches on paper. Now, if I can just source what I need and get people to show up on time 😂. It will all be good!

    I certainly do look forward to your videos! You cover two things I love: gardening and antiques, especially glassware. Your driveway island flowers look great as always. I'm so tired of the rain, don't think it ever stopped Friday on my side of the county. Thankfully, we're supposed to have a few days of sunny weather ahead. I hope the gopher/mole solution works for you; I wonder if it would work for crawfish, I hate stumbling over their "chimneys" in my front yard.

      Thank you so much! I love doing the videos when I can devote the time it takes to get them right and hopefully improve. The electronic mole/gopher stakes have taken time, but seem to have driven about 90% of them away. I still have one that is VERY persistent... trying to decide if I need additional stakes or other measures!

    The driveway island looks wonderful. Question: what are the tall, wispy, blue flowers on the island? Oh my, the Fenton art glass featured is gorgeous. That punch bowl is exquisite - if only it could talk, the stories we would hear. Excellent point that there will be no more Fenton. I didn't realize it started in 1913 - I look forward to learning more about Fenton.

      Those tall plants are verbena bonariensis. Those are the old-fashioned ones grown from seed. They actually over-wintered this year, which is unusual for this zone. However, they do reseed themselves sometimes prolifically. I love them and just thin out any extras where I don’t need them. They attract butterflies, too. I originally bought the seeds from Johnny Seeds online.

    I’m excited to find a fellow Kentuckian. I found your channel in an old Garden Answer video. Your planters are inspiring. Thanks for sharing these suggestions.

    Your antique planters have become your signature arrangements and I'm sure this year will be no different. The lantana should take off and grow a lot with all your rain - as long as you get some sunshine too. 😎🥀

      Haha... I've just been standing outside - in the rain - trying to film a small bit of what I actually accomplished on the one sunny day we've had recently! I was determined to get at least 75% of the caladiums off the grow light shelf this week... I got close. Thank you for the urn compliments. I hope they continue to inspire. I was just looking at an auction thinking about buying another, but it was a buy one, get another broken one that was the buyer's responsibility to remove... it kind of lost its appeal. I'm thinking about a shade one for the future changes when we clear the east side magnolia.

    Good to see you this morning. Glad you found a lightweight tool to help you out in the garden. Too funny - due to all the rain lately, my agenda today is trimming the shrubs and such in the garden too. Your local garden nursery looked well stocked with lovely plants. The footage at the end of the irises, poppies, and the beautiful flowering tree were breathtaking.

    sorry to hear about your tendon problem Mark - always something to contend with when you have a large garden to deal with! That hedge trimmer looks like a nice tool to help deal with the trimming of the hedges and bushes. love your Irises - gorgeous colors!

      Thank you!! If that's the only time I use those trimmers (which it won't be) they were worth it! I looked up what I could buy locally with a good rating... I wanted to actually see it and feel the weight, as opposed to ordering something and not knowing. They did not disappoint!

    I don't know why,but my gaura doesn't come back. It's a perennial in my area. Would you know why?

      Last year was the first attempt with Guara for me. I put one outside and kept one inside. Strangely, the one outside seems better than the one I kept sheltered. I plan on checking these out over the next few days.

    Mark, your property is beautiful - my favorite area is the hillside garden as it epitomizes the picture of spring with all the flowering trees. Your kitchen garden is looking really green and healthy too.This past fall I took a chance and planted an Eastern Redbud here in MI. To my surprise it survived the winter and is now budding up - I'm so very excited.

      Great news on the redbud! They can be a bit finicky here... typical and under-canopy tree like the dogwood. That's why I've kept them in the lower backyard under the larger trees.

    I love a 'field trip' that includes a ride in the country so thank you for taking us along. I'm getting itchy to get out in the garden and clean up the beds after the winter and prepare them for new plants. Yes, lots of rain here too - my favorite time to weed! Looking forward to seeing the progress on the showcase. Have a good week!

      I am ready to hit the local garden centers a little harder in search of a few more plants... I stopped in a neighboring town at some "high end" garden centers and left empty-handed. The selection was worse than my local hometown farm greenhouse and the prices almost double per plant.

    Thank you Mark for taking us on an opening day garden center trip and a glimpse of the Falls. Nice to see that you have an area of grow lights to look after your new flower purchases until it’s safe to plant in garden - it certainly has been and up and down year with the night temps! Looking forward to seeing the finished showcase.🌺

      I think we have finally stabilized temperature-wise, but I think we have rain everyday in our 10 day forecast. It's been difficult even keeping the lawn maintained this year 😂. I am ready to work on the showcase. I have all of the parts sitting there. I just need a good bit of dedicated time to work and film the project.

    This is the type of info that I like to hear and see Mark! Thank you again will make me more informed when I go antiquing- instead of saying “ oh just another “Ball” jar. puts a whole new perspective on the “hunt”!😀

      Good to hear! It's the tiny details that make the thrill of the hunt even more fun... When you find that special "older" jar from the early 1900's or even the survivor from the 1800's. Or, even the "lucky 13." Thank you for your support of the channel.
