I tried Duolingo years ago, but I didn't like all the ads and stuff for the free version. I ended up using the Refold method with lots of Anki (JP1K deck and self made sentence cards) and native input with supplemental learning from NativShark. It was a pretty good way to build up my vocabulary and grammar knowledge as a beginner.

First of all, (sorry for typing so much and don't feel like you have to read this or reply, I just relate to everything you mentioned and have been invested in your videos/journey since I started watching your videos, It's always meant so much how you've replied to my comments in the past.) I just want to say that your editing has been great in my opinion! Also, sketching out your storyboard for your videos is genius! I'll have to remember that as I make different kinds of videos too haha. Aside from that though, as of late, I very much relate to your struggles. I finally got my first long-form video out (*yayyy!!*), and have been working on the next one for what feels like FAR too long. It's a draw with me of a drawing I worked over 10 hours on, and now I'm in the script writing stages, but I've felt myself growing insecure, as this is a project that is dear to me, but I know it will probably not be seen by many. I've also worried about not being able to do my drawing justice with my words I put alongside it, and that I might end up making people who DO watch it bored. I've felt this way for about a week, but I'm just getting over it, and am ready to work hard and get it out there so I can continue on to my next ideas (which I'm very excited for hehe). My process so far has turned out to be similar to yours, although different haha. I keep all my ideas jumbled up in my notes app on my phone, and then when I decide what I'm going to do, I also script it out in docs. The funny thing is that on my last video I uploaded several PNG's of my little "me" drawing-- and M A N U A L L Y edited them in according to what I was saying LOL. (this took hours to do lol) I also heavily relate to the decision paralysis. I try to avoid it, and try to learn how I can better manage my time, but it pains me that I can't seem to figure out how to fit everything in. Everything from playing music, learning japanese, making videos, actually doing art to improve, playing this or that game that I wanna finish, spending time with friends or family, doing all the housework, and so on. It becomes overwhelming, to the point that I find myself back at square one eventually, only doing the bare minimum and gradually working myself up again. I've been fighting against it lately and try to force myself to keep healthy habits at the very least. My "bare minimum" now, is LEAGUES above what my bare minimum was about a year ago. Anyway, thank you so much for uploading! I really look forward to every video you make and look forward to see how you grow! :D

Thanks for the comment and don't worry about it being too long! I find this a really interesting phenomenon. I also struggled with Persona 5 (and Dark Souls) initially but after many years I finally ended up finishing them and "got it", and now I've played all other Persona games (and soulslikes) with much more ease and they became some of my favorite games. But part of me wonders if they're actually good games if apparently so many people struggle with them? From what I've seen it also seems that the people who do end up finishing it after an initial struggle period had some sort of perspective change. Are they really worthy of recommendation then? I just think that's really interesting to think about...

Yeah that is an interesting thinking point, but I think if some media requires some adjusting, I don't see that as a negative, just more niche. There's certainly nothing wrong with that, but if you are willing to give it that extra time beyond surface level it can be super rewarding!

@@Ruben_BE_ I mean art isn't necessarily bad if it's obtuse or esoteric particular when that is a goal of the creator. And these are examples of games with oodles of depth that take several hours for all their core mechanics to be tutorialised and internalised. So it sounds more like an attention issue on your end than a design failure. And by no means is that an insult I'm a big proponent of no introduction cinematic or early game taking more than 30s of control away from players. I got bored of nearly all the trails games because of their pacing and going from cutscenes to dialogue to establishing shot to cutscene to dialogue. So I have the same issue.

@@Ashamedofmypast I wouldn't call it an issue though, I'd just say the game failed to grab our attention. Whether the game could've done a better job at that or not is up for debate.

@@Ruben_BE_ ya but you placed the burden on the game entirely right? In doing so you imply a failure of the game or issue in its on ramp design. But the game succeeded to grab many others and by design and really by necessity they have to dole out systems in paced increments as to not overwhelm. So a slow burn and mystery is as effective as anyone could hope tbh. Have you played any other person? How did their introductions grab you? Or soulsbournes . Because that would yield interesting insight into the phenomenon. In my experience the jrpg genre as a whole struggles due to a requisite time investment.

concerning duolingo the main thing is not the streak but more the number of hours u spent practicing...someone with 1000 days streak who practiced 5min/day didnt do sh.. tbh... on the contrary someone who spent 100 days streak with 1h/day did practice more efficiently. fact

+ главное использовать дуолинго не 5 минут в день для галочки, а именно учить и записывать пройденный материал хотя бы по 25 минут 3 раза на день и тогда уровень А1 будет у вас примерно через 2-3 месяца в почти любом языке.

Great video! Another 2 things I like about duolingo is the kanji practice section has actually helped force me learn both stroke order and just memorizing Kanji. It's just made me read subs and translate sentences so much easier by constantly practicing. The 2nd thing is the competitive aspect. The leagues and being in the top against your peers helps my spirit and I just want to see my name in the top of the leader boards. It also helps getting XP boosts from your friends and doing quests together. That being said, I also studied way beforehand going to in-person classes in my area as well as reading the Human Japanese Beginner and Intermediate textbooks.
