4 reasons to get a Jacques Herbin glass dip pen...and 4 reasons not to
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.4 месяца назад
The J. Herbin round glass dip pen is a popular choice among fountain pen enthusiasts for sampling and swatching new inks. But these classic glass dip pens have a long history, and they are super fun to use. However, they aren't perfect. A glass pen comes with both advantages and disadvantages as compared to conventional steel-nib dip pens. Regardless, I enjoy my J. Herbin round glass dip pen as...

Просмотров 3,6 тыс.4 месяца назад
Moleskine is probably the most famous journal brand there is, but how do you pronounce Moleskine? It seems like no one can quite agree. I've heard everything from "Moleskin" to "Mole-eh-skeen-eh." So I did some digging, and I found authoritative evidence for the true pronunciation of Moleskine. If you'd like to support my RUclips adventure, please consider liking this video. Newly Released! J. Herbin Les Toits De Paris Fountain Pen Ink Review
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.4 месяца назад
This new Jacques Herbin fountain pen ink is awesome. The Les Toits De Paris ink, named after the iconic color of some of the rooftops in Paris, is a gray fountain pen ink that leans blue-green (to my eyes). It's the most interesting gray ink that I've seen. This ink has good shading and a fair amount of water resistance, which makes it even better! LINKS Instagram: downthebreather...

Have you ever heard of "SCRIBO".....? STACKABLE BOTTLES. BAR NONE THE BEST BOTTLES EXCELLENT INK & PENS
Maybe quit buying crap pens
I had to tune a Visconti. Go figure. And how come your pens keep breaking? I had an old original TWSBI that cracked but since then I have 5 and no issues. Well, your blooper at the end answered my question.
imo, safari absolutely belongs there, regardless of the tip. ive never understood the fascination with this pen. it looks bad and feels bad. and as far as it being "cheap" i have $4 jinhou's that look and feel 1000x better.
Pronounced “mola skeena” according to their website. It’s Italian. I use Rhodia/Clairefontaine mostly and Paperblanks for a diary.
1 don't buy the asvine 126 if you are wanting a daily runner for work the clip on them is a major stress point it will snap the clip and stop section
I just got this for 2025. Only thing I don't like is how light the ink is on some of the pages such as the Project Planning and International Holiday sections. I actually thought something was wrong with the book when I first got it but I guess that's just how they make the book.
They are OK with me pronouncing how I want? Great. MO-LES-KINE.
Thank you for a very good, informative, and helpful video. This described some of my options well. I never knew what the differences were before. But yeah - I prefer to be a fountain pen person, but have often resorted back to ball point ink due to the cheap paper. I took notes and will use it when I get my next notebook.
Twsbi Ecos, Kaweco sports (both the metal and plastic models) as well as their full-size cheaper model, the Perkeo, are awesome pens. They write better than most expensive pens (and therefore you could stop reading here, punto). Both pens are made from high quality plastics and their nibs are just the best steel nibs in the market. The 'reliability' issue with the Kawecos is - I believe - a thing of the past. Modern Jowo nibs are just amazing. They are true to their rated size (unlike Pelikans, some Italian and moat Chinese pens that must rely on over-rate thicknes and excessive wetness to get smooth). The plastics in Kawecos is just amazing - hard, durable and beautiful. The cracking issue in the Ecos I havent seen myself, so I need to know its frequency. Caveat. For the Kawecos, the design of the nib-fitting nechanism is different and slightly better in the metal models (more expensive), and I'd bet this gives them a plus in reliability. All nibs fit in either type of pen, but in the metal models it is threaded; in the plastic Sports, it is pressure-fitted. I like better the metals, but the plastics are good enough, highly reliable, and they use the exact same nib which, as said, it is just a wonder of engineering and small tolerances. PS. My current everyday writer is a F all-black Perkeo with summer purple Kaweco cartridges. No under-$100 (or over!) pen will give such a firm, well defined, fine and smooth writing. Some Perkeos I decided to smooth out with veeery slightly with micro-mesh, improving the smoothness better yet without getting significantly thicker, but it takes a moderate learning curve. 2 additional pens to try and fall inlove with : - The Kaweco Student. Same ultra-reliable Jowo nibs, but I suspect they even tweak them at the factory to make them a tad smoother. With a drawback: The grip section migh be a little slippery, depending on your style, use and hand. - The Divine Design eyedropper models. A ton of ink (literally) with awesome elegant looks and #6 Jowo nibs of all sizes. It's only drawback to me, if you mind that: the cap fits with 2+ turns.
I like the cheaper less known brand PAPERAGE that’s popular on Amazon
If it is the Moleskin Classic then yes. It was a big disappointment for me. You cannot write with a fountain pen in it without it bleeding to the other side. But if you buy the premium version with thicker paper then the paper is good. I didn’t notice any durability issues.
Never had an issue with my Kaweco Sport. My Lami Safari skips a lot, so never again. I have a Twisbi which is okay but, meh, and again, the nib skips too often for mine. My favourite pen is my Opus 88, I converted it with a Pilot parallel nib for drawing and it rocks…. My next pen will be a Pilot custom, when I’m rich and famous…
Thank you for this video- very informative! What's your opinion about Paperblank notebooks?
thank you for the video, it helped me a lot! I have been using moleskine notebooks in the 2010s like A LOT and they were great, decided to go back to them from digital note taking and was looking for info about them. your video popped up, I watched it out of curiosity and it led me down a rabbit hole where I discovered that actually moleskine's quality declined significantly... ended up ordering rhodia instead, excited to give this one a try.
I don't like Safaris compared to other inexpensive pens. Waterman Allure is really underrated. I love the Allure.
I have a few inks that feel super dry and keep skipping if in the pen too long...that might be a good alternative, I'll definitely try it.
Thanks, I always thought I was a weirdo because I think Moleskine paper is terrible
Had a friend who had issues with pens drying up. Turned out his house was dry as a bone due to an environmental issue. Added a humidifier with a mild setting and problem gone.
I wanted to recommend entry level Jinhao and Asvines, but it just can't work given how poor chinese quality control is. I would recommend them a Jinhao 10, and then it would arrive and the nib is bad or the barrel cracks in 2 weeks. I just stick to pilot or lamy for beginners
My choice is Leuchtturm1917 120g dotted! :-) Best for Bullet Journal.
The EF Preppy nib is genuinely the best EF nib I own. It's smooth AND ultra thin, like was thinner than say the Lamy Safari EF. For me it was a whole different experience of EF nibs. And can be eyedroppered. Love it.
The EF Nib is the only one that fits my writing style. I never had problems with scratching
Endless is pretty good and great for fountain pens!!
The problem I have is I was a notebook with a lot of pages and the only way to really get that other than literal trash is the moleskine expanded. If Leuchtturm made a 400 page notebook, I'd buy it in a second.
It’s pronounced mol-es-keen.
I looked back at my Leuchterm and found that ink smearing was a big problem, and the paper felt flimsy. Lots of pages though, that is true. I have like the MINIMALISM ART journals. Has anyone tried those?
I love the Platinum Little Shooting Star/Small Meteor it goes by 2 names one of the best pens I have ever written with I had moved house 2 years ago I havent written with my fountain pens since moving but I made a choice I will journal and write more in the new year and I went to go clean my pens I had forgot about and it still writes AFTER 2 years with in still inside crazy I lost my note on what ink was it in so just washed it but wow I was blown away Wow I am actually surprised about you not liking Twsbi Eco I have this pen more than any other just brought another one the other day and waiting for another one to be released as the colours are beautiful and affordable. these still could also write after 2 years with wetting the nib to get them going as they still had ink inside but cleaned them I did pull them apart with also taking the nibs out as I knew I had some sheening and possibly shimmering inks but no cracking here but I guess something to be aware of but hey I do wanna get a 580 iris as I got the iris Vac when it was release but not a fan of the vac system much prefer a piston
Very interesting video. Thank you
Really helpful video - just before christmas!
why am I watching this when I don't need another pen?
@@znab7610 haha that's dangerous!
I love my ef safari nib. It writes very smoothly and I’ve never had a problem. Sorry to hear that you’ve had such problems with them.
well I tried to do it gently but my nib got more wanky
One on my favourite notebook papers are from Tsubame. It's like Tomoe river paper but cheaper and not the ghosting issue. Apica CD is really nice also I like the beautiful designs on the covers as well, it's like you traveled back in time. Fabriano also has some good fountain pen notebook paper and Life notebooks are also nice in my experience. I have had that same issue with the fingerprints on a Cosmo air light which is quite strange as I have hear people rave about that paper, perhaps just a one off as the notebook that I got was a pocket size just to try the paper out, not sure.
Leuchterm for me! Oversize A4, dotted pages, squared or plain, page contents on first two pages for subjects or titles by page number….
I am not a purist. I will reuse old bottles that I like with whatever ink I decide to put in.
Watched both of your videos: Top 6 Fountain Pens for Beginners and this Never Again video. I lack your experience, although I've been using fountain pens for 45 years (not counting my early elementary school days). 2 Montblancs, 1 Pelikan, 1 TWSBI ECO, 1 Lamy Swift, 1 Pilot Metropolitan. So I cover the range from beginner to luxury. I've had no problems with any of these pens. But then again, I don't tinker. I love the TWSBI ECO. Writes very well, converter works well. The TWSBI fine is a bit too medium for me. The Lamy Swift writes just a bit scratchy even in medium. The converter does not hold enough ink. The Metropolitan in fine is really nice. That's it. Maybe you tinker too much, too often?
I own eight pilot Kikuno extra fine point fountain pens I fill with different colored ink cartridges for my artwork. I absolutely love them!
I really love the notebooks Galen leather puts out. They use Tomoe River paper and hand bind them. Super solid.
Thx for your input, man 😊✒️
finally,, I didn't like them, people raved about them.. I bought them again and regretted it. I never filled one..
I bought a kaweko sport, replaced the nib with a vintage gold nib. It writes great.
+ Parker Vector, bad ergonomics
Appreciate your insights! The barrels of my Preppy and two Jinhao Sharks cracked. I am holding them together with washi tape. The Sharks were only $3.95 though... I love my metropolitan, but I dropped it, it is misshaped, and now it won't post. Soooo annoying because the balance is off without the cap posted. My workhorses, honestly, and I have had them for 15 years, are my Jinhao x750s.
Iroshizuku caps are very fragile. I knocked over a bottle at Origami Ink and the cap cracked and started leaking all over. I bought the bottle from them because it was my fault and they taped together the cap as best they could so that I could get it home. When I got it home I had a friend 3D print a new cap for me (they're available on Thingiverse) and it has worked perfectly since. I can't stand Anderillium's regular bottles. They remind me of Cracker Barrel jelly jars.
I just bought one yesterday in the "Fiery" color. The clip is not loose at all. Maybe the Lamy folks fixed that issue after having seen this video. p.s. Love this pen!
You got a thumbs up from me!
wait? since when were TWSBI pens made in Acrylic? last I remember they are still HDPE
I did a little digging, and it looks like different models may be made from different materials, but according to Goulet Pen's website, the barrel of the TWSBI Eco is made from acrylic.
The Moleskine paper weight and quality must be different between their notebooks and sketchbooks...I've been using the sketchbooks for years and find the paper weight and quality and durability to be great!
I bet you're right. The sketch paper is probably more rugged.
WOOW
