Hi, I have a question for you. I've been watching a lot of videos about the Mac Mini M4 Pro, and I think you might help me solve a doubt I have. I'm looking to buy the Mini M4 Pro with 64 GB of RAM, 1 TB of SSD, a 14-core CPU, a 20-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine. The price is almost 3000 euros. Then I noticed that the Mac Studio M2 Max, with a 12-core CPU, a 30-core GPU, a 16-core Neural Engine, 64 GB of unified memory, and 1 TB of SSD, costs about the same. I work mainly with Adobe software (Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects), so now I have a dilemma about which one would be better to buy. I hope you can help me figure it out, haha! A M4 Mini Pro (maxed out) is zippy compared to a M2 Max Studio with 64gb, yes - more gpu cores... but day to day - the single core speed is noticeable and worth the purchase.

im torn in what to get next. debating in building a tower PC or m4 pro / max because only edit in resolve. a 45-50 minute sermon I edit takes 35 minutes to export in 4k (down sampling from 6.5K) and about 18 minutes for 1080p from same timelines. not sure if upgrading to a higher end pc would even reduce that time or if im delusional in thinking that footage can render in 5 minutes with the right machine?

Thx for this Great Video. Most of the other videos talk about other benchmarks & export time. But, mostly EDITING experience is NOT discussed . EDITING is the most crucial phase as it makes or breaks the overall experience. You nailed it. Question, did you try adding some noise reduction and other effects / adjustment layers and see if you get the same snappy experience ?

I was waiting to hear what codec your video media pool contains. Explanation: I own a Win10 machine with a 5950X/3080Ti combo, and a base M2 Pro Mini. Media pools for both are on U.2 Thunderbolt 3 enclosures. I edit in DaVinci within the Mac Mini because its H.264 10-bit 422 (from Panasonic GH5s cameras) hardware decode allows far better agility on the Edit Page timeline compared to the Win10 machine. There is no Windows offering for that specific codec. You can watch the CPU in the Win10 machine struggle with the CPU decoding of timeline thumbnails, especially with a 5-camera multicam. However, the heavy lifting of Depth Map, Noise Reduction, Relight, all are overwhelming to the GPU capacity of the M2 Pro Mini. I suspect that the Windows Cut/Edit page performance issues you attribute to disk performance is actually a video decode performance difference between software/CPU being slower than hardware-ASIC decoding.

Can you explain why better neural engine i thought it is the same neural engine? the rest of the advantages i can follow. So probably higher bandwidth for Ram access.

You haven’t mentioned the codec your exporting with but i know the Apple computers will export ProRes much faster than using other codecs.

TBH -- sounds like you should wait for M4 studio. ESPECIALLY since you want the resolve speed. I mean, Ur @ $2400 for the mini M4 pro. Assuming the M4 Studio has the same costs as the M2 Studio... a M2 Max Studio with 64/1TB is $2600. $200 more. But as you can see from your own M3 Max scores, (and others M4 MPB MAx speeds) all of those extra GPUs crush the mini scores. Saving you time. Of course, you gotta wait =) Maybe start putting $10 a week away... so by the time they are announced, you can sell your m4 mini and bump up to a m4 studio =)

Great video as always. As an avid iPhone user since the 3GS I’m thinking it’s now time to switch from my 2018 HP laptop to a Mac Mini M4 Pro. I already use a separate monitor via HDMI and if I can confirm that all my external hard drives connected to my powered USB switch along with my keyboard & mouse will all play nice with the Mac Mini M4 Pro via USB - USB C adapter then it’s a go for the model that has 24 GB of ram and a 512GB or 1TB Hard drive.

I can't see anyone doing serious production on the mini. The base unit is a fabulous mini PC at under 600 dollars. Power efficiency is incredible. It'll work fine for anything I need. I'm still using a Mac Pro 5,1 for video editing/heating the office.

Have you tried connecting it with your Vision Pro? I’ve never had a Mac, but I do have a Vision Pro and I’ve been tempted to get a Mac Mini to use with the Vision Pro. Interested it to see if you’ve done it.

you misspoke at 6:05. M4 Mini has Thunderbolt 4, not 3. M4 Pro has Thunderbolt 5 as you noted.

I've got a base Mac Mini M4 Pro with the 512Gb SSD, and it writes at 3,400-3,500 and it reads at around 3,100. This is the internal SSD. I also have a maxed out Mac Mini M4 Pro, but I've not run any tests on it to see what the speeds are yet.

I have a M2 Mac Studio Max I been Editing in-house and just bought the M4 MacBook Pro 16” for Travel Work. These Macs especially the M4 Mini Pro are incredible machines. I use External Thunderbolt 4 Enclosures, the Thunderbolt 5 ports are great but 3000 mbps vs approximately 5500 mbps is not worth the jump in TB5 peripherals at the moment 😅 3000 Mbps is nothing to sneeze at. At TB5 speeds outside of connecting monitors, very few people are doing anything complex enough outside of Large Data File moves to justify it right now…. But I’m waiting on standby 😂

😂 I knew the base model wasn’t the right fit for you. You’re the typical Apple customer who values convenience, pleasing aesthetics, saving time, and better performance over saving a few dollars. I’m curious to know what ended up costing you $2300. The starting price for the M4 pro model is $1300, and it comes with a 12-Core CPU, 16-Core GPU, 24GB of unified memory, and 512GB of SSD storage! I believe this setup might be a better fit for you than your current Mac Studio. Plus, considering its trade-in or resale value, it might even actually cost you very little difference.

Trade it in and get a snappy one. It’s amazing how much time you put into these videos, sure appreciate it!

Fun video, but you seem to jump from low to high. You go from 256gb storage which is too low to 1tb being too high for $400, but why not go half way $200 for 512gb? Then you say if this ( a base model Mini) doesn't do it for video editing then you have to wait for a Mac Studio M4 "Ultra". That's a bit of a jump wouldn't you say? You got the Mini with the M4 Pro chip or the current Mac Studio with M2 Max chip which for video edit will destroy this Mac Mini or even if you wait there will most likely be a Mac Studio M4 "Max". Why the Ultra? But, hey it was fun to watch. And a thumbs up from me!

I decided I did not need the M4 Pro as I rarely do video editing type tasks. I went for the M4 with 512 SSD and 24 GB memory. I doubt I need more than 16GB but as that can’t be upgraded, I decided it was worth the extra. Looking forward to your upcoming videos. The hearing aid option on the air pod pro is not available in the UK right now.

Wow I’d not heard that figure of 13x faster than the fastest intel based Mac Mini. I guess that must be the i7 Mac Mini which I have, or was there a faster one which I have forgotten?

I talked myself into an M1 Ultra Mac Studio a couple years ago with a 5 year commitment, and it was costly but has been worth it for being able to run image generation and LLMs at home. Now these little M4 powerhouses have me thinking my next upgrade is going to be a mini, unless the next Mac Studio has something extra extra going on. By the time I do the upgrade who knows where we’ll be, with M6 probably smoking the M4. Whatever ends up happening at that time, it’s never been more affordable to be a creator on the Mac platform.

I ordered the M4 Pro mini to pair with my AVP, and I’ll be retiring my Intel iMac and MacBook Pro. I went with the Pro because of the Thunderbolt 5 and additional memory bandwidth. I figure that will give me 2 or 3 additional years out of it. The only disappointment is WiFi 6e instead of 7.

Yeah, that entry level Mac mini deal is irresistible. Preordered it as soon as it was announced.

When you said the new iMac is 6 times faster than the Intel iMac, is that the M4 or the M4 Pro? I’ve got the Intel iMac and wondering what to do. Although I’ll probably lean towards the Mini this time because it bugs me no end that i can’t repurpose the great iMac display in the new setup.

Dr. Wiggo, Thanks for the update. I wanted to correct something you mentioned about 3D movies on the Apple Vision Pro. The truth is most 3D movies on the Apple Vision Pro ARE NOT in 4K, and I'm of course not talking about the 180 immersive content. As someone who owns the majority of 3D films on Bluray, that also appear on the Apple Vision Pro, 95+ percent of them are only the 1080p versions that come on the Blurays. The Avatar movies are 4K for sure, and maybe a handful on Disney +, but the majority are just upscaled, at best, 1080p. And some are SO SOFT, that it doesn't look like Apple even bothered upscaling. I'd love Apple to invest in 4K versions for all 3D movies on the Apple Vision Pro, but by not revealing the resolution of these films day one, I feel it's deceptive on Apple's part, because like you, I just assumed they'd all be 4K. Sure, Apple can claim, "we never said these movies were all in 4K," put that's just a lack of candor by omission, because of the constant messaging by Apple on the 4K specs of the hardware. Just wanted to help you out here as I pretty much own every 3D movie released on Bluray. Have a great one! vgv
