From The Heart: Sea Fishing On A Stunning Winter's Day!
My first Bristol Channel Sea Fishing trip of 2025, back to The Pink House which is in-between Redwick and Goldcliff, on the Severn Estuary at Newport in South Wales. A Sea Fishing Mental Health Boost was required, having not been out in ages! Cod, Codling, Flounder, Thornback Ray, Whiting, Sole and Conger Eel are all species which I have caught at this Newport Sea Fishing mark over the years, I have many great memories.
Thank you for watching, I appreciate it!

Oxwich Bay Sea Fishing from the Oxwich Church Rocks, down at The Gower. This was my first time at this beautiful spot. Five species and a lot of fish overall, the rod tips didn't stop moving all evening, it was a busy one to say the least! I love visiting this area and if I lived a little closer, I'd be down there all of the time! Thank you for watching, it is very much appreciated! Gareth #riv...

Likewise you could be the student by learning a new angling discipline we could get inspired by your journey from zero to hero
Hi buddy I’m new to your channel and am glad I found it. I think you could diversify by filming a “zero to hero” series where you recruit an absolute beginner someone who has never even held a beach rod and you use those great people skills by coaching them to a level of proficiency that they can go out and fish solo. You film all the sessions and make it a Riverside with Me instructional series. I reckon this could have legs buddy more than happy to provide more insight on how this could work if you want. Ta Yan
With you on the New Year thing, Gareth.
Nice video, Nice location and it was relaxing to watch. Thank you for the lovely words ✌
You're welcome Rubel. It was a lovely morning, nice to see a bit of frost and ice. Thank you for watching 👍
It’s not only about catching it’s getting out and about and the chat keep up the good videos
Very true Stuart, very true, just nice being out there isn't it. Thank you for watching 👍
By the by, a podcast would be brilliant for you and us, do it!
Wow Gar, it just gets better and better, that introduction was something else, I had to switch off and watch it a bit later as I was too emotional to continue. I think you are doing the wrong job professionally, you have a skill that needs to be displayed. You can bring laughter, tears, cock ups and jokes, and I bet that fishing is not your only gig. You have an innate ability to bring both pleasure in your enjoyment and pain in your reminiscences, it is a very moving and stands you apart from the other fishers, your channel is no way the same. Good luck to you, and thank you so much for entertaining us with your realism. By the way, get that cheapy old boat rod out more, I miss watching it beat the flash tackle.
Thank you Steve, appreciated as always. It was a beautiful winter's morning and I was able to capture some nice footage. I appreciate the compliment, I always try to make a watch that has meaning and that is relatable, although I'm just myself when filming, there's no act or anything. The marks I fish are dying a slow death and so it's getting harder to show fish, hence why I focus on the deeper side of angling, although this type of video will never be as popular as the 'fish' ones! I'll keep plugging away and we'll see what happens, I'm too stubborn to quit ha! Hope all is good with you bud, take it easy 👍
Another great film- keep 'em coming!
Thank you Neville, much appreciated. Hopefully more to come soon. Cheers 👍
Great to see you back out on a beautiful day Gareth, fish or no fish you put in a lot of effort into the videos. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Richard, appreciated as always. It certainly was a beautiful winter's day, I couldn't complain. Cheers bud 👍
You sound very similar to myself. Im also a realist. Best way to be in life. I find just helping somebody else to catch a fish and appreciate whats around them is the buzz for me. It's never going to make us rich. Great video. Love being by the sea and getting my blue therapy or in your case brown (the Bristol channel)😀
Yeah you're right there bud l, it certainly is the best way to be. It's a great feeling when you help someone isn't it, money can't buy that feeling. Me too, a few hours spent next to the water is good enough for me, the fish are just a bonus. Cheers bud, take it easy 👍
Hi Gareth. Another cracking video. When the weather improves I would like to invite you to join me kayak fishing. I can provide everything you need. Be nice to have a few hours out on the water 😊🎣
Thank you Neil, much appreciated. Quiet on the fish front but it was a stunning morning. You'll do well to get me on a kayak ha, although I appreciate the kind offer bud. Hope all is good with you, cheers 👍
Try like me metal detecting Gareth you get out and about in the fresh air and learn some history.
I've never tried it Jeffrey, although it does look appealing in fairness and I might give it a go one day! Cheers 👍
If you'd be so kind I'd like some advice as from the end of the month I'll be a pensioner and I'll probably not be able to do as much fishing as I used to do that's why I've taken up metal detecting. I've got quite a bit of sea fishing gear so next time we're out in Wales with the Motorhome I'll msg you and you can have a rod and reel as a thank you for entertaining me all these months. You never know we may wet a line together as I'd like to meet you. Yours sincerely Jeff.
All the best lad for the new year tight lines and keep these fantastic videos coming
Thank you Jeffrey, much appreciated. I hope you have a good year too bud! Cheers 👍
I’m skint as well gar 🤷♂️😂 keep fishing 🫡 !!
Ha yes that's it Jonny, we've gotta keep wetting those lines! Cheers bud, tight lines for your next session 👍
I been thinking about what you said about where to take the channel. I’m just saying I will challenge you to a dual on newton beach in the summer ( east vs west sort of thing ) we could make it funny. Just a thought no worries if you think it’s a stupid idea lol. Take care of yourself, ever down this way don’t hesitate to give me a shout if you need me anytime 🫡
@jonnywebb5794 Well that could certainly be on the cards Jonny, the Newton Beach fish off ha! There's not much life up here at the moment, hope you're doing better down your way! Thanks bud, much appreciated!
Hey Gareth, the lave fishermen at Black Rock are saying they have been finding a lot of dead Conger, what you reckon.
It doesn't surprise me Peter, the Estuary is filthy at the moment. In my opinion, its ecosystem is dying a slow death and I fear that things will get worse. Sad but true, it upsets me and many others.
Gareth me and my wife mainly watch for your great cinematography, peaceful, relaxing and mindful videos. It is lovely to see the South Wales landscapes which, despite being local, we sadly don't get time to see as much as we would like. The fishing is just the cherry on the cake. The most important thing is you enjoy making these great videos and get the relaxation you undoubtedly deserve.
Thanks bud, I appreciate it and I'm pleased to hear that you and your wife enjoy the videos. The marks I fish are getting harder and harder each year and so I try to focus on the deeper side of angling instead, hence the scenery shots etc. I'll keep plugging away and hopefully I can make more videos, I'm too stubborn to quit just yet ha! Cheers as always 👍
Brilliant editing Gareth. Really liked this one. Absolutely brilliant scenery and you didn't blank 👏 great stuff mucka. 👍
Thanks Neil, it was a lovely morning in fairness and I was able to capture some nice scenery footage. Hope all is good with you, cheers bud 👍
Hi Gareth, I've watched your videos for some time now and never commented before, infact, i've never left a comment on anybodie's channel. I can relate to you when you speak of your Dad and the memories you have as I have similar ones when we went fishing many years ago. I'am nearly 52 and decided to retrain as a counsellor in 2020 and it changed my life for all the right reasons. I really wish id done it many many years ago but just wanted to say, it is never to late. Making a difference to someone's life is invaluable and so very rewarding. I am not going to say its easy, working full time, looking after a family, volunteering at a school and college counselling 6th form students, but i'am almost there. Anyway fella, you take the greatest of care, keep well and we'll maybe catch up again soon.😁
Thanks bud, I appreciate it. I'm pleased that the videos remind you of when you fished with your dad, no doubt you have many great memories. Good on you for retraining as a counsellor, as you say there's something special about being able to help others, money can't buy that feeling, although I can appreciate that it's a lot of work. Cheers for watching, take care 👍
Another great video Gareth, content is not an issue just seeing you out there doing what we all love and general chit chat is great. Like a lot on here in the chat agreeing with you that you have a calm voice and demeanou, your not to old to get into counselling mate never to old to learn new skills. Love the idea of a podcast or whatever you decide to do, this time of year can be quite bleak in upper channel but a few cod have arrived and I mean a few 2-3. Haven’t managed to get out myself as been on sick after an RTA before Christmas but back in work now and hopefully out this weekend coming with some mates for a catch and if we catch that’s a bonus. Keep vides coming mate even if just on the upper channel 👍🏻🎣🎣
Sorry to hear that you were in an RTA Marc, hope you're on the mend now, couldn't have been a nice experience. Yeah the marks I fish are getting harder and harder each year, the upper channel's ecosystem is dying a slow death in my opinion but you never know, it may show signs of recovery one day. Thank you, I do like helping people, deep chat is something that I've started to embrace in recent years. All the best bud, take it easy 👍
@ all good now mate after my physio , got to agree with upper channel as been a load of congers just turn up dead on the black rock lave net grounds with no real reason why so poss pollution but surely that would affect other species as they al feed on the prawns shrimps and crabs etc
@benjoma1 Pleased to hear that bud, good stuff. Yeah it's nothing compared to when I was a kid, it's sad. I heard about the Congers, that is strange, although I'm not surprised, all sorts of poison being pumped into that estuary. Dad and I used to be able to dig a 1lb of lugworm in 30 minutes at St Brides, now you'd be lucky to find five worms. I hope one day it can bounce back 👍
@ used to be same in Cardiff foreshore for me 20 mins digging and would have 5lb blow lug for 4 of us with 2 rods each for 5 hrs fishing and throw what’s was left back, second Severn crossing and Cardiff bay barrage have disturbed the tidal flow and all beds now covered in silt and mud form places like the barrage and also Hinkley
I do look forward to your video`s gareth and here`s anothor good one!!,you can always count on the pin whiting to save the blank well done on the video mate
Thank you Del, appreciated as always. Ha yes, you're right, the little pin whiting often save the day, there must have been quite a few out there. Hope all is good with you, cheers 👍
Hey Gareth I hope Christmas time was good for you and loved ones, I do love watching these videos regardless of what happens or what you catch it’s the only time I go to RUclips these days. Do you try the bait in the mud often? I did something similar last summer with chunks of sardine with a head as bait in amongst and caught my first bass but wondering if you try it much and find it works better? Hope you’re well
It was thanks Finley, it was nice to have some time off work. I hope you and yours had a good one too. Yes I often bury some old bait before the session starts. Not sure if you've seen my Merthyr Mawr video that I did before Christmas but I buried some bait in the sand and I had over 20 fish that evening, five different species and so it does make you wonder. Hope all is good with you bud, cheers as always 👍
Hi Gareth, keep doing what you are doing. Believe it or not, you are fishing all the spots I used to fish when I lived in Wales, I live in Scotland now, but I still miss fishing the channel a lot, I cannot believe that's it been 30 odd years since I fished there, you bring it all back to me thank you so much.
Thanks Ian, I'm pleased to hear that the videos bring back some nice memories for you. The marks I fish are not what they were but I still enjoy fishing them, they're just nice places to be. Cheers for watching 👍
Great video - you have a great eye for framing shots and atmosphere - topics could be wildlife/mental health/industrial history/the seasons/history of wales/drone footage/underwater footage. You seem to have a good ear for background music that helps with setting the peaceful theme that underpins - concentrate on quality not quantity and don't stress !
Thank you Andrew, much appreciated. I try my best to make a relaxing watch and I enjoy capturing the scenery, water etc, that's the best bit of making a video. I'll keep going and will see how things pan out, hopefully much more to come. Cheers 👍
Cracking video again, don't worry about the lack of fish, we all know how the fishing has diminished, what's important is how you deal with it and that is why we all appreciate your no nonsense approach. I totally agree with your comments regards to changing your life choices instead of new years resolution, it makes a lot of sense to concentrate on positives and not negatives, I personally think you'd make a brilliant counsellor (you're never too old to change careers) you are so empathetic in your approach and understanding to the mental health attitude - please don't change, your videos have helped me and many others who can't get out to fish but really love what you bring and we feel that we're there with you, keep going my friend 🫂💞😊
Thank you Derrick, I appreciate that, nice of you to say. Yes the fishing certainly has become a lot harder, especially where I fish, although I guess we can only but try. I always try to make a relaxing and meaningful video if I can, I enjoy capturing the scenery and wildlife, I don't enjoy filming the fishing bit so much ha! I'll keep going and hopefully more to come with a bit of luck. Hope all is good with you, cheers bud 👍
Can you put up the rules for fishing berry head
Go to the very first comment of this video and the link to the rules is there.
Lovely video again Gareth and some nice words , Also your comments on a podcast sounds good but I think it wood take up quite a bit of your time, My wife is not into fishing but as soon as I say "Gareth is on" she goes makes herself a cuppa and sits down to watch it with me , just goes to show it's not about the content so much as about the person and that persons personality that people enjoy, Keep up the good work , look forward to the next one , Cheers.
Thank you Philip, I'm pleased to hear that you and your wife enjoy the videos. The marks I fish are getting harder each year and so the fishy action will become less, although it's nice that people enjoy the other elements such as the scenery, chat etc. I'll keep going and will continue to try and make interesting watches, despite the lack of fish ha! Cheers as always, take it easy 👍
Just keep on doing what you do,it entertains us immensely, what pleases us you don't bs us with too much details about about tackle.Your films take us into the countryside from the comfort of our armchairs, thanks so much
Thank you Gerald, I'm pleased that you enjoy the videos. I'm to stubborn to change ha, I might do some different videos in-between the sea fishing ones that's all. Hopefully more to come soon. Cheers 👍
Gar, as others have said, I'm not here for the fish, I'm here the videos on the whole, the natter and the shots are always fab, in a weird sort of way I feel like I'm fishing with you even tho I'm sat in my living room with a cuppa!! Wether you catch or not makes no difference, I'm intrigued to know tho as a novice and starter sea fishing man, what do u believe is the easiest and most forgiving mark east of Porthcawl? As same as yourself trying to keep fuel costs down, in Rumney myself.
Thank you Alex. I try to film in such a way that it feels as if you're there, hence why I capture the water and surrounding scenery, I'm glad you enjoy it. East of Porthcawl - Merthyr Mawr is a lovely beach but on medium size tides only (not big ones), Monknash beach/ Llantwit Major Beach, Penarth Pier/Cardiff Barrage, The Knap at Barry. There are many more but the above are some of the easier ones that you could try, not many snags. Cheers 👍
We like you and it is Gareth. Keep fishing. someone is proud of you up there. waiting for the nest one!
Thanks bud, nice of you to say. Hopefully more to come soon, work and weather permitting. Cheers as always 👍
Hi Gareth, don't fix what is not broken pal. The channel hasn't fished is best this year we all know, if it was that easy to catch a fish they would rename it catching instead of fishing. Love your channel pal please keep it going.
Thank you Neil. I won't change, I'm too stubborn ha, I might upload some different videos in-between the sea fishing ones that's all. Yes you're right, we can't always catch them, just nice being out there isn't it. Cheers bud 👍
Anything you do Gareth will work for us.keep the faith.
Cheers bud, much appreciated. Hopefully more to come soon 👍
Hi Gar I’ve never commented before and I’m a fairly new subscriber. I subscribe to most of the angling channels and I have to say your one is one of my favourites. I fish too and blanking of catching dogs or whiting is par for the course and I love it. Please carry on as you are. Oh and by the way, I’m from west Wales and there’s sod all tidy being caught here either, so don’t waste your money on fuel getting here. Great video as always 👍🏼
Thanks bud, I appreciate it. Yes that's it, blanking is a part of what we do isn't it, it's just nice to be out there, getting some fresh air. I won't change, I'm too stubborn ha, I just might do some different videos in-between the sea fishing ones. Cheers for watching, take care 👍
Great video again hope you had a good Christmas break aswell from what you were saying in the video about liking to help people and other things I’d reckon you could do well getting on board with the Samaritans they could benefit having men like on board and never seen you with such a big doggy haha take care for now looking forward to the next one mate
I did thanks bud, it was nice to have some time off over Christmas, hope you had a good one too. Ha yes, the farmer's dog always sits with me for hours when I fish that mark, he's quite well behaved in fairness. Thank you, that kind of thing would probably suit me better, although I wouldn't have said that five years ago. Cheers bud, take it easy 👍
I’ve fished the last two Mondays down Aberavon, 10 hours altogether, not a bite but I thoroughly enjoyed it, just being there and out of the house 🏠
Yes I'm the same John. I just enjoy spending a few hours next to the water and getting some fresh air, the fish are just a bonus. Cheers 👍
It would be interesting to see you fishing your local river. Having said that, I enjoy your videos wherever you fish - catch or no catch. By the way, 44 is not old. You're still just a lad. Good luck with your planned personal changes.
Thank you Richard, I'm pleased you enjoy the videos. Yes I'll show my local river this year, the wild brown trout in there are beautiful. My knees are definitely getting old, they're creaking a bit now ha! Cheers 👍
I’m actually mad at you G (in a good way) 😉 1. There are 100’s of videos of fishing and people catching whoppers but it’s the creators who have charisma who have the most followers whether they blank or not! 2. I know ‘showing your rigs or tackle’ is not your thing but people who respect you and enjoy your vids may just want to see you in your shed showing us you making your favourite rig (as though we were there in your shed, having a beer together and sharing knowledge). 3. I can easily imagine some of the mental health issues you have been / are going through and believe me, I am not the the best place at the moment even with the support of a loving wife and kids so please SET UP A LIVE CHAT AND Q&A SESSION! …you may actually realise how many people respect you and the penny may drop and you finally realise what you are actually good at! …connecting with people and talking. Anyway, rant over 😂 …all the best pal 👍🏼
Hi Tony, thanks for the comment. Yes, I'm probably too hard on myself. It's because when it comes to my videos, I like to produce something decent to watch but as you say, it's not just about the fish. Sorry to hear that you're not in a good place at the moment. Having been there myself, I can appreciate that's not a pleasant feeling and I hope you start to feel better soon. The live chat is a good idea actually, I'll consider that one, I quite like a deep chat or two. Cheers bud, take it easy and look after yourself 👍
@ cheers pal. Just let it sink in that that the people you follow you do so for what you are doing. Embrace it and enjoy it. If you are happy with what you are doing then keep on doing so 👍🏼 …but please, if only a One off video, just for me, make just one video just showing what you use, the rigs you use. WE ARE ACTUALLY INTERESTED ! Is it a rig you designed yourself? Is it an old style rig that your dad sworn by?
I really enjoy your fishing videos. Keep up the good work and put yourself first. Years of stress from work did me no good. I have very few friends which is just the way I like it. Less hassle. If I go fishing and blank well that's how it goes but it doesn't take the enjoyment and satisfaction of being out in the open with fresh air and the sound of the sea. Love it.👍
Thanks bud, I'm pleased to hear that you enjoy the videos. Yes I'm the same, I just like spending a few hours next to the water and any fish that turn up are just a bonus. Less hassle sounds good and I don't blame you for having few friends, good for you. Cheers 👍
Nice video again Gareth keep up the good work
Thank you Philip, much appreciated. Hopefully more to come soon. Cheers 👍
Don't change mate ❤
I won't bud, I'm too stubborn to change ha! Cheers 👍
Just another quality watch …..gar look at the comments pal you don’t need to catch fish …it’s a bonus when you do …seriously you got me into fishing and now taking my grand daughter to cherish those wonderful moments…. Thanks buddy take care
Thanks Carl, I appreciate that. It's great to hear that you're taking your grand daughter fishing, no doubt you'll have some happy times together, many memories will be created. Cheers bud 👍
Hi Hey Gareth no need to worry about fish...all fishermen identity!just carry on and keep giving your videos to the world! You can always take different paths in life and I think you have a unique talent. I agree with your new way of thinking. BE IN THE MOMENT! Yesterday is history Tomorrow is a mystery Today is a gift....Enjoy it! Cheers. Happy New year.
Thanks bud, much appreciated. Nice saying too, I do like a good quote! My local marks are extremely difficult these days and so I can no longer rely on the fish and so I focus on the deeper side of angling, hence the scenic footage etc. I'll keep plugging away and hopefully more to come. Cheers bud, all the best 👍
Good to see you back out there Gareth. . . .how about being a marine activist? Campaigning for awareness of the depletion of our oceans?
Thanks Paul, it was nice to be out there again. In relation to what you've said, I have some video ideas in mind, talking above my local marks and why they're dying etc. Hopefully this will raise some awareness. Cheers 👍
Great video Gareth keep up the good work. Just one question from me, did you ever fish Newport Docks?? Can you fish there now??? Use to be fantastic fishing back in the day.
Thank you Paul, much appreciated. Yes I fished Newport Docks many years ago, although as far as I know, it's not allowed now. As you say, the fishing was superb, had some crackers from there. Cheers 👍
Brilliant sun mucker, thank you for making this video most appreciated cheers boy
You're welcome Neil, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was a stunning morning, I couldn't complain! Cheers for watching 👍
you're a sound bloke bro keep doing what you are doing, mate. Your dad will be well happy that you're remembering him and getting on with the rat race we are all in. Take it easy, bro, and thank you for your effort
Thankyou for your great videos. I know the struggle of travelling to fish, living in Oxfordshire any sea fishing is at least 1.5 hours drive. You make the best videos on YT they are true and realy capture the spirit of fishing. It is a true pleasure to watch you fish and listen to your life stories.Thankyou for all that you do. Ben and sally.
Hi Ben and Sally. Thank you very much for the donation, I shall put it towards some bait. I don't think I make the best videos but nice of you to say, I appreciate it. I always try my best to make a relaxing watch, I love capturing the surrounding scenery and the wildlife. The marks I fish are getting harder and harder, although I'll keep plugging away and you never know! Cheers for watching, enjoy the weekend 👍
Great to see you Gar,i think you could be the Welsh Michael Parkinson, not with celebs but normal people like us,nhs workers, postmen, firemen, market workers, builders etc talk to them about their lifes and jobs. Could do it indoors or walking in countryside or even takeing them on a relaxing fish session.
Thank you Michael. Haha, the Welsh Michael Parkinson, very good! Well you never know, it's something that I could explore. I do enjoy having those deep chats, good for the soul I think. Hope all is good with you bud, take it easy 👍

Thank you bud, nice of you to say, I appreciate it. No it's not something I've thought of to be honest. If I was a little younger then I'd consider doing something else. Maybe in another life ha! Cheers for watching, take care 👍
