She's not wrong, but I think the key thing she's missing for this type of AI is the need for reinforcement via operator/human interaction or a dataset of known correct values for the model to compare itself against. You can't have it iterate forever without some man-made benchmark for success and expect improvement. Furthermore, dumbing down advanced concepts to 7-year-old speech and marketing buzzwords is how we ended up with a society full of regards. I mean she’s not technically wrong in that it’s how some AIs work, specifically RL-based ones, it’s just not LLMs work, which is what she was trying to explain in the first place. A better explanation is that LLMs work by making them keep predicting what word comes next in sequences of text found all across the internet until they’re really good at that, then giving only them examples of chatbot responses until it’ll thinks all input text will be met with a chatbot output. Then the final model we actually interact with will repeat the process of ‘make predictions for the next word, randomly choose one based on its likelihood, and insert the new word’ until it thinks the response is supposed to end every time we enter a prompt. A further dumbing down is that we first teach an AI about languages and facts by having it play guess-and-check on a bunch of internet text, then once it’s really good at that, we show it a bunch of examples of how a chatbot should respond until it’s able to copy them and do the same. Both explanations are still misleading but should still result in much better intuitions as to how they work. The widespread misunderstanding that they work like RL agents has led to a lot of confusion about the nature of AI and why they work the way they do, so I get a bit annoyed when people peddle them, even if done unintentionally like Lumi here.
