Just an average guy trying to fulfill a dream of building a 6x6 military truck into an overland camper. Follow me on my journey! If I can inspire one person to follow a similar path, this channel would have been worth it!
(2024) Welded Overland Habitat Framing! #truck #6x6 #heavyequipment #m2x #welding
Hey everyone, I hope you are doing well! In this video, my dad and I weld the steel framing to my overland truck build. It took us about four days to complete. We used 3/16 steel for the load-baring posts and 1/8 steel for everything else. This is not a how-to video but a what-we-did video. I plan on adding more steel for window and door supports once I figure out where I want to put those. In addition, I will beef up the frame by welding 45-degree angles between the 24-inch framing posts for more rigidity. Let me know what you all think!?

I purchased the crane do you have any of the parts left ???
Love the build , you need to work on your video intro.. like a shot from inside the truck driving down the highway or a fly shot of the truck with the diesel engine revving up..
How’s gas mpg? 8-10?
i purchased the crane from your fmtv do you have any other parts ?
I just love the sound of those Caterpillar diesels. Looking forward to more of your build videos.😊
Awesome progress 🦾
Your resevoir is a heat exchanger, as has been pointed out. What about disconnecting and reconnecting the bowl heater in the fuel filter assembly you removed? There is another, more important fuel filter just to the right of the one you changed. It should be a CAT 1R-0751 rated at 2 microns and is far more likely to plug up and cause the engine to stop running. The one you replaced is a 30 micron filter and almost useless. A R45T is 10 micron and should have been installed instead. Just removing the mounting bolts for the filter head would have provided enough room to remove the filter assembly (no need to disconnect any fuel lines). I own a 2000 LMTV, have 50 years of automobile repair experience, and I am a professional mechanical engineer.
That looks fantastic
Great job
Keep up the good work Matt!! Good start and good to see your dad working with you. Max
@maxvanrunkle1052 thanks Max! Always appreciate your support 🙏
I've thought about doing exactly what you've done (same model truck and habitat framing) and wondered how (or if) you are planning on addressing frame and habitat flex? I was thinking I would free the upper frame rail and add spring capture mounts between the rails with a hard mount in the rear.
@chrisszabo553 for my situation I'm not going to address the frame/habitat flex. I'm going to add support inbetween the 24" post and wherever I can. I'll also try to keep most of the habitat weight center line of gravity to prevent the truck from tipping over. I don't plan on doing any real serious offroading with the military truck because it won't ever be as capable as a jeep or 4runner. Not trying to trash my nice truck 😅. Also, most people that own these types of trucks never really do routes that require the flex. You might flex on 1% of the journey and to me the return of input did t seem worth it. I'll make sure to do a good route study before I commit to a major trip
Thanks for the info in the video. I have interest in the 2.5 ton LMTV and videos on costs are very difficult to find. I would like to see more content on maintenance and the costs involved to help make an informed decision on this being a platform for me.
@nicholasflanders1309 the one year anniversary of me buying this truck at auction is coming up, I'll do a one year cost break down. It will include cost of buying the truck, normal maintenance for the truck, tools I bought, diesel, etc
noice
Awesome! It is always nice when the technical stuff is out of the way to start making it nicer :D
I definitely agree! Soon enough I'm going to start building out this habitat and the real transformation will begin. I still have a little bit more maintenance to do. Still have to replace fluid in transmission, transfer case, and differentials. Plus I still have a little oil leak after replaced seal on oil pan, I believe it is coming from one of the seals at the top of the engine.
@@M2-Expeditions I think there will always be maintenance to be done haha but at least the list is getting shorter!! Can't wait to start on the habitat as well!
Looks tight
Thanks Matt! On your video the truck seems quieter. Good work!
You definitely need to throw up that upholstery on the ceiling
It is in the works
that cyber truck is loud
Nice work :D
Thank you! Always appreciate the support!
Wow! What a great build. So quiet in the cab. Looks like it rides smooth and stops well.
Thank you! The upgraded cab with sound proofing makes the drive more enjoyable 100%. The truck feels great for a 2002
Needs train style horn with bull bars with bull hirns attached to ram cars 😋 cool rv thou 👍
It is in the works!
There is a reason all manufacturers use quicknuts, clipnuts, cagenuts, speednuts, and NOT RIVNUTS.
The best thing about riv-nuts is that they will ALWAYS fail and spin when you are removing them! you will destroy the entire panel, and door when they do in order to get the screw out of them when they do fail.
Drive safe
Had my seatbelt on and pit viper sunglasses, cant be safer than that!
As a former 63B light wheeled mech. i love working on vehicles. If i was close i would help. Do you have all the 3 TMs?
I would have definitely loved the help! These are the two TMs im using below: UNIT, DIRECT SUPPORT, AND GENERAL SUPPORT MAINTENANCE REPAIR PARTS AND SPECIAL TOOLS LIST FOR M1083 SERIES, 5-TON, 6X6, MEDIUM TACTICAL VEHICLE (MTV) VOLUME NO. 1 OF 2 and volume 2 TECHNICAL MANUAL OPERATOR’S INSTRUCTIONS M1083 SERIES, 5 TON, 6x6, MEDIUM TACTICAL VEHICLES (MTV) VOLUME NO. 1 OF 2 and volume 2 You are saying there are three?
Very nice, love the color!
Thank you! Cheers!
Dam you be driving an lmtv-ini with that interior
Haha, definitely not as fast as one but maybe by the end of the build the interior will look similar
Nah bro leave it the way it was
You recommend leaving the military truck as is?
no
@@M2-Expeditions Indeed. Thats what i would do at least. But you do what you do, man.
I’m exited to see what it is going to look like 👍
This is going to be a busy summer, with the cab almost done the next step is the build out of the habitat!
The truck is starting to look very luxurious!
It even feels luxurious!
Loved the result! Very nice!
Lookin sick
Thank you! Much appreciated!
The wood color is great strong work out there
man that must have been frustrating to get mostly done then realize you got to pull it mostly out and start over....... patience is a virtue..
I'm definitely glad being a carpenter is not my day job 😅. It was frustrating, but the end result speaks for itself. I'm happy I didn't leave it as is. I tend to have a bad habit of that.
This
Thanks for the information. It’s in Honolulu and they want $6k to get it to Long Island. Bought it for $2500 though so still not sure if it worth it to ship for that much.
This is the way i see it, I paid $18100 for mine, and the going rate for these trucks on gov planet is usually 10-20k. If you can deal with the hassle of shipping and don't have a specific timeline, I say do it. That would put your total to be $8500 and is significantly lower that buying an lmtv somewhere that is main land U.S. As long as the truck is in decent shape and is close to becoming in working condition, i would try it.
So I just won a bid for the same truck on gov planet. Just curious who you used for transport from California. I’m in Texas and actually didn’t think I would win the bid so I was not prepared.
Congrats! I used the veritread transportation that is on the gov planet site. I was able to find someone to transport it from California to Washington state. It was about $2800. It also depends on if the truck starts. I had to hire a rotator/wrecker 2k each way to load the military truck then off load since the steering in mine didn't work.
Thanks for the advise I’m looking to shipping rates now since I have to keep it. Your rig is looking good and great videos your putting out I like watching the progress. thanks for the help.
Why not hold it 3s and unscrew it? It moved with those too short taps.
I actually put a wrench to hold the nut then tried impacted until battery died. Wasn't able to break loose the bolt. I didn't film that part because I was so frustrated with how removing this crane was going. 😅. I even got the bolt off when I used my air impact gun
Moment I see a guy roll up with all lime green brand I automatically assume diyer or non professional, just the judgmental opinion of myself, don’t judge me to hard but to a certain extent I think I’m right. Perception is reality ⚔️
Oh I 100% agree. Stereotypes are rooted in some truth. I'll probably never buy a Ryobi tool again after this.
Ryobi is for home owners
After this event, I'll probably never buy a Ryobi tool again
I hate to think what the price tag was.
Ryobi sold those to the us government for 1.2mill
Helps when you hold the trigger down, plus it was moving regardless of you wanting it to fail
I did a bad job of filming and I agree holding down the trigger helps. The Ryobi was good enough to move the bolt, but when I applied a wrench with the ryobi impact, it wasnt strong enough to loosen the nut. Eventually to undo the bolt + nut I used a stronger impact
😂
Of course not! Those things barely take off lug nuts!
Damn, how high did you get in there while spraying? No mask lol...btw congrats on the new job
Thanks man! It was pretty rough 😅 I had to keep opening the doors and stepping out for fresh air.
Thanks Matt!
What! You didn't tape off the glass? Or am I just not seeing it? I have been through this pain. @floodexploration
I was in a rush to get the console painted and didn't want to stop by hardware store to put up plastic. I got very familiar with warm water and a sponge 😅
Good job...thank you your video...from korea.
Thank you! Love to hear that!
thanks Matt!!
You need a video just on the tools you need to work on this beast!
If Harbor Freight was not around, I don't think I would be able to do half the jobs required on this thing 😅
You were wrastling with that thing
