I decided that there needed to be more emphasis on safety with regards to the Mercury content. This video hopefully corrects this. I have also included some unseen footage with regards to removing stubborn glass tubes. This is an examination of a number of Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs), particularly noting the High Voltage Transistor parts being used. After noticing an Optically Triggered TRIAC (MOC3021), an investigation of the circuit follows. Notes: At around 9:40, I begin to talk about the CFL_Harmonics paper, dated May/June 1993. I was misreading TABLE II, and therefore misrepresenting the data. There...
Repair of LG 42LW5700-TA LED TV, Part 5 - It does compute

This is the first of the long awaited videos on remotely operating and accessing the TV and it's operating system. In this video, I show how to use the Device Control interface and the serial Console, specifically for TV's with Firmware 3.06.04. With later versions of the Firmware, LG has progressively disabled these things, and in later videos, I will show this. Enjoy.
Tinker Time: Warbling Indicator

Repair of a 100MHz Oscilloscope probe lead. Surprisingly, I could find an appropriate video for something that seemed so simple. In this video, I experiment with a time-lapse, Picture-in-Picture stream. I suppose it could be deemed a blatant attempt to double the number of views. Especially if I were to ask viewers whether they noticed anything inappropriate in said stream. There isn't... or wa...

In Part 2, I recap relevant bits of Part 1, then show the results of the Acetone on the Hybrid module at various points in time, cleanup and then reverse engineer it's circuit, cringingly "repair" the module, reassemble the meter, and then finally check it's current consumption and low-voltage detector. Calibration is next on the list.

I would like to find a voltage which I could convert into RPM. Is there such a signal in this circuit, or is the meter working with an output current and not voltage? Thanks a lot!

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have the 1994 version (grey casing) briefly shown at the beginning of the video - purchased at Dick Smith. Because of the name Metex, I mistakenly though it was German...hehe. It's got pat. pending US and Germany on the back. I like this 25yo meter although it's only 2000c (3-1/2 digits). Recently it developed a fault with reading AC voltages. Measurements on all scales were ~30% off. e.g. 178v reading for 240v mains. The ADC chip works on VDC only so VAC first needs to be converted and scaled. The designers couldn't fit all of the circuitry of the AC-to-DC converter on the main board so they resorted to using a vertically mounted extension PCB, naming it ADC-HD-201CR. Luckily the fault turned out to be caused by 2 bad 10 uF/16v caps (C6 & C9 on the main PCB). The approach used was to test the main board components of the AC-to-DC converter in-circuit, and then remove and re-test the ones with no or suspect readings. I'm glad I didn't have to go through the trouble of removing an extension PCB like you need to do. Finding your videos helped me repair the meter.

    Very Interesting video. It was useful to calibrate my Metex 4650 in the DCV range, unfortunately the 2 Volts scale is not accurate and alligned with the others example (200mv, 20v, 200v). My M4650 has two extra trimmers, one below the display and the other at the center of the four holes inputs and that are absent in your M3650. As you know do you think should be one of these two trimmers able to calibrate the scale of 1,9999 resolution. Thank you. 😉😊

    • @richardrudek01
      @richardrudek01 6 лет назад

      Just the 2V range ? It's unlikely, but I don't know. Before going much further, you need to know that the Meter is in good condition. A Meter is something you need to be able to rely upon. Or at the very least, know what NOT to rely upon. A quick Google search for a schematic brought me to a page on Elektrotanya - you need to wait for the link to become live: elektrotanya.com/metex_m4650_cr.pdf/download.html The schematic looks like it might be legit. My suggestion is to (safely) download the schematic, and work out whether it can help guide you. Looking at the schematic, the first thing I saw was that they are using a two-chip setup: one for the Measurement and one for the Display. I then found a user manual and saw that it is a 20,000 count meter. So, um, yeah. If the problem is just the one range, then it could be Bad\Dirty switch contacts, dirty PCB, or other things related to that specific range. It's unlikely to be out-of-spec Precision Resistor(s), because that usually effects all ranges, though it is possible. It could be damaged protection circuitry. It could even be Electrical noise, such as Radio (Mobile\WiFi\etc) or Hum pickup. So, experiment: with\Without the Leads, Faraday shielding the meter, etc. ONLY AFTER YOU KNOW the meter is Good, or what is not good, do you Calibrate.

    • @maurizio700
      @maurizio700 6 лет назад

      @@richardrudek01 The deviation is minimal but unacceptable if I'm not mistaken, it has a factory tolerance of 0.05%. Ex. 2v range i have 1.3185 20v range i have 1.315v I have another DMM 4650B where the two range are alligned. Where the problem? 😕😔

    • @maurizio700
      @maurizio700 6 лет назад

      @@richardrudek01 Hi Richard, as your suggest assuming that no adjustment trimmer for 2v interval exists, for our curiosity I centered the calibration around 200mv and then up to 3,000v however already arriving at 5v begins to lose two counts and then to 10v and four counts lose. Can we suppose there is a circuit failure? Or still a compensation trimmer would be perfect in the case? So, my curiosity pushes me further and I would like to experiment moving on the two trimmer left that you do not have on your M3650 but at high risk of putting out of alignment in something else. ☹ Thank you for even going search for the manual I found it too but that scheme goes far beyond my competence.

    • @richardrudek01
      @richardrudek01 6 лет назад

      Four counts out of 20,000 is 0.02%. That is well within spec. Note that when you start getting down to levels of accuracy like this, environmentals such as Temperature and Humidity can affect the results. More than once have I seen readings fluctuate with people simply breathing on the meter... So whether there IS, or IS NOT a circuit problem is something that YOU need to consider and decide. Things to consider, though, is the condition of the Meter. Has it been physically or electrically abused. Is it 'dirty'. Often, you are left with little choice but to open the Meter and inspect it. But if that is not an option, then you are left with rigorous testing, perhaps within test chambers that are shielded and environmentally controlled - temperature, humidity, pressure, light, etc. Now when it comes to experimenting. Just be sure you are able to live with any possible outcomes. In this case, however, we do have a schematic that seems like it is mostly correct. You should be able to find each of the variable resistors in the schematic, then find them on meter, and figure out what it is likely for. For example (Guesses): - VR1 seems to be setting the zero point. - VR2 perhaps AC voltage. - VR3 perhaps Capacitance. - VR4 and VR5 the Frequency counters.

    • @richardrudek01
      @richardrudek01 5 лет назад

      Oh. So you are comparing between ranges on the SAME meter - the M4650. Interesting. Yes, I missed that point. I'll get back to that point in a minute. The schematic I have for M4650 seems to confirm that the basic accuracy is set by the precision resistors, ALONE - like with the M3650 in my video. Thus, if there is a discrepancy in one, and only one range, then the voltage divider network made using the precision resistors is where you need to be focusing. However, whether or not you can do something about it is another thing. For example, if you find that the precision resistor between the 200mV and 2V ranges is out of specification, are you going to disassemble the network and fix it ? Now back to the earlier point about comparing between ranges. In the video, I compared "the standard" with the "subject". That is the Voltcraft Meter AND the Test Source, with the Metex. Notice how I emphasised the "AND". When you calibrate using a Source and a Reference meter as "the standard", one thing you can miss with that set up is the interaction between input and output impedances. Now both Meters should have input impedances that should be in the 10M Ohm range. But you can be surprised by the effects, if your not vigilant. To put some numbers one it - and these could be wrong, so please double check. How high does the (output) source impedance (Rs) need to be to produce an error of 40 counts with 10M Ohm input impedance (Rm)? There are many ways to figure this out. If the source impedance is much, much lower than the input impedance, then the simple ratio method is close enough. But the more correct method is by considering a voltage divider circuit. With the simple ratio method, 'simply' multiply the input impedance by the ratio of the error. So 40 counts / 20,000 counts * 10,000,000 Ohms = ~20,000 Ohms. Interesting, there is symmetry in these numbers - 20K counts, 20K Ohms... Lets double check this using the circuit method. We have a source producing a Voltage. We'll call that Vs. Then we have a source Resistance (Rs) in series with the Meter's Input resistance (Rm). The meter then completes the circuit by connecting the 'COM' lead back to the voltage source. So, ASCII art circuit: (Vs)---< Rs >---o---< Rm >---. |__________________________| So lets make Vs = 1V. Vrs [across Rs] = 1V / 20,000 counts * 40 counts = 0.002 V Vm [across Meter] = 1V - 0.002V = 0.998 V Rs = Vrs/I I = Vm/Rm = 0.998 / 10,000,000 = 99.8 nA (99.8e-9) thus Rs = 0.002 / 99.8e-9 = ~20,040 Ohms. In short, if the output impedance of your test source is ~20K Ohms, you can expect to see a voltage drop equivalent to 40 counts by simply connecting your 10M Ohm meter across it. FINALLY: Sharing. You obviously already have a RUclips\Google account. In which case you should have a Google Drive. Log into your Google Drive, create some folders and share it and/or the specific pictures, publicly. Then copy and paste the link in a reply. Just make sure you limit the permissions on what people can do. For example, do NOT give editing\authoring rights to the public, just viewing rights.

    Thank you for a series of very interesting videos. I've got a very similiar model (LG 42LW5500) that shows the same problems as yours did (power board seems to be ok). I will try reflowing of the main graphics chip using my resoldering hot air station. But since the chip itself seem to be genererally sensitive to temperature, in order to avoid it failing again I was considering to permanently mount one or two 4x4cm active fans outside the chassis (same as you did in the video when you did your temperature measuring). Since the TV offers 12V on the video board, I was wondering whether I could take the power for those fans directly from there (by soldering a 2-pin wire that leads outside of the chassis through one of those holes, where I would connect the two fans. Do you see any problem with such an approach?

    This is a terrible way to "reflow" a BGA of this size and kind. It's not reflowing, really, it is merely expanding the balls so a contact is made; it'll fail within days or weeks and if anyone says they're happily running for months I simply won't believe them - been there, done that one too many times to take anyone's word. The only application of manual hot air "reflow" is with very small ICs like RAM chips where the area is so small and device is so thin and balls, accordingly, so little, that heat can get through the device to them and melt them while actually still providing enough heat to allow melt of the solder on the pads - something which simply won't happen with the 35230 and the air blower from this video. No hard feelings, the videos are without a doubt educational to many; still this is the wrong way to repair the problem, even though it would look like it works for a while.
