Daves Boat
Великобритания
Добавлен 14 мар 2020
After some lovely experiences with the TSA on a flight back from America I decided I wasn't going to fly any more and instead figured I'd buy a boat!
This channel follows my journey in learning how to boat, buying and keeping a boat etc as well as my adventures on one, and maybe along the way you guys can join in too :)
Hopefully at the same time I'll prove you don't need to be a millionaire to get into boating.

Welcome to the Hamble River
So I had big plans 2 weeks on the boat loads of training, usage I was going to video it all both an Aquaholic adventure style but also just videos of me training (and screwing up).
Turns out I'm terribad at this youtube lark and didn't video much at all just a few snippets, so a quick 7 minutes is all i manged to get out of it mostly just me rambling.
Anyway hope you folks enjoy and I'll see at least a few of you on the Solent hopefully.

Today I'm prepping Wild Rose for her move to the south coast and as with everything boating nothings ever easy. I arrive to completely dead batteries and broken shore support 240v. So a little giggery pokery to get engines to charge the batteries enough to start the generator so at least she could get onto the lorry. -~- - - -~- Please watch: "Welcome to the Hamble River" ruclips.net/video/FJyM...

Electrical upgrades for WR
Просмотров 797Год назад
In this video we start some much needed (or desired) electrical upgrades for Wild Rose to prepare her for taking down to the south coast next year. None of this equipment was free/donated/sponsored its all from my own pocket after I did my own research on what equipment I wanted. If you are a berth broker, or represent a marina or know of a berth available on the south cost ideally around South...

I'm glad you are enjoying the Hamble/Solent area - there is certainly plenty to do, anchorages to visit etc and you can go further afield - I can recommend unlimited ribs in Poole on a Tuesday. Lulworth Cove and the whole Jurassic Coast down to Weymouth is beautiful place to boat along. I am in the Pure Lattitude boat club, based at Port Hamble Marina, so get out in a variety of motorboats so maybe our paths will cross sometime.
Great idea's for places to go, why unlimited ribs only on a Tuesday though is there something that goes on?
@@DavesBoat No just one of the steak houses by the Town Quay Marina does an offer on Tuesdays and the ribs are to die for!
ahh that sounds great quick trip up to poole for an evening of ribs and beer :)
Please show us were you moored & walk around IOW if possible nice relaxing video Dave 👍
great idea's will do them in October as I didn't get much footage last time too buy actually enjoying my holiday :)
Brilliant welcome back 🤗
Nice to see you in the area Dave. I used to be moored almost opposite you on the other side of the river.
It's a lovely area isn't it. Where did you move to ?
@DavesBoat I moved to Beaulieu initially then back to Christchurch, where I was for 30 years previously. However I have now downsized and trail my boat, so can launch anywhere. Yes it is a lovely area but the solent chop can be a pain
@@fat_tommo_goes_boating yeah people have warned me about the chop and luckily for the 2 weeks I was down there it was almost non-existent even with mad winds. however i think I was lucky, having said that having come from the Humber the chop doesn't really bother me its the rollers I don't like large and slow so the boat sits off angle for periods of time. Anyway back down in October so hopefully the weather will be kind again and I can get some hours running in again.
@DavesBoat The Solent chop is worse from Cowes to Hurst in my opinion, all wind over tide. If it's bad, wait 4 hours and it will be gone as a rough rule. I might be about in October aswell. I need a few more trips out before the winter.
the 4 hour thing is good to know, we did get out to the needles past hurst but tbh at 26 knots we were basically flying over the chop so didn't notice it so much 😂
If your Floating you're Boating
You are indeed. In the great words of Nick :)
Love seeing people screw up as we all do it and makes it more watchable.
and i will probably screw up a fair amount :)
Looks like your enjoying the south coast. the hamble is beautiful.
So far loving it going down again at end of October see if i can get a week down before xmas as I'll get a little busy until the new year after that.
Great to see you out on the water down here. I’ll wave if I get over to the Solent from Poole area 😅 and I see you. Great idea getting some local instruction
I'm sure i'll make it round to Poole soon too. plan on visiting all the local area's etc.
Good to see you out on the water again Dave!
I forgot just how much I enjoyed it and it was nice to actually get to use the big beast properly and get some hours actually using her not just floating around. The ability to come and go from my berth basically 24/7 without even considering tide is amazing its like so much freedom even just to pop out for an hour and back a couple of times a day. I know its like a 5 hour drive to get there but now I'm planning on going down for a week or 2 every couple of months and I'll actually get out on the boat.
@@DavesBoat that’s great! And plenty of opportunity to get out during the winter too, there are heaps of calm but cool days down there. Good move away from Grimsby, too restrictive with tides, and really nowhere to go other than Scarborough or Whitby. It’s getting towards summer where I am, which sounds great, but regular 40+ degree days are brutal!
@@marinepilotchris3048 but at least you can be on the water ?
@@DavesBoat pretty much every day
Little jealous then I remember you now live in a country purely designed to murder humans. I'm hoping we get a break in the weather again towards end of October as I plan on going down for another week before the xmas shenanigans kick in.
Great Video
Glad you enjoyed it
nice video , i yet to sail mine in fareham marina but love to do the trip to isle of wight one day
For me as a motorboat its only 20 mins to Isle :) little bit slower for you sailing but fareham is only just up the road from Universal where I'm berthed too so if you see a big motorboat flying around give me a wave :)
@@DavesBoat haha yes but i have an engine too but only 20hp
It's nice down there , hope you get to use your boat more now . We moved ours by water from hartlepool to burton waters , we wanted to be on the sea but not much point if your not using it much . Even though we are basically on a canal we are getting to use the boat more , £16 to Moor in lincoln overnight and plenty of bars , there are also a couple of pubs on the canal where you can Moor up overnight 😀
Burton waters is just up the road from me and its where SJ was from. Its nice there. You can also go through to the trent and cromwell lock has a lovely brewery just walking distance away good food at weekends and great beer, or you can head up to newark or even into nottingham if you want its not fast due to the speed limits but like lincoln its a lovely day drive to spend a night on the town and drive back next day. My house is across the river trent just before Newark so I'll wave :)
@DavesBoat that's the plan for next year , they are replacing the flood gates at the marina so we can't get out for a month , but it will give me a chance to do more work on the boat 😆
well if you need a hand i'm literally 20 mins max away :)
@@DavesBoat thanks that's much appreciated 👌🙏
I have looked at upgrading our DAB / Bluetooth unit to Fusion, but what I am struggling to understand, like you, is why, unless you buy a £700 head unit, that DAB isn't supported with FM being literally switched off around the globe! Everything else is fusion - speakers, PA etc. Absolutely amazed that the wiring block was u/s out of the box too - great upload this which I have just referred back to for inspiration ahead of SIBS 24
While at SIBS go find Richard at ROC marine ask him to show you the kicker and rockford fosgate marine stuff tell him Dave from Wild Rose sent you.
@@DavesBoat Certainly will do!
Spanish Dave is a good skipper, used to fish of the beach with him when he had an orkney fastliner
You must have a good job and plenty of cash to run one of them
😂😂 not really
Awesome upgrades - ours are much lower down the cost scale- I have thought of Axiom, but for this year, I am going to buy a mid range plotter which still offers NMEA 0183 output so the sentences are more compatible with out older autopilot - I am hoping this will work as out older chart plotter does as it will drive waypoint to waypoint as long as the waypoints are simple numbers. I don't have any experience of using a converter from NMEA2000 to 0183, although this may be an option. So a mid range upgrade - then to completely remould the dash combing and start again next year. In order we want to - upgrade the autopilot (Keep the hydraulics and ram), radar - potentially quantum as liking the wifi / cable free idea. Any advice gratefully sought!
Mixing 0183 and 2000 isn't a big thing tbh I'm still running old bits like the transducers etc using the raymarine itc5 as the converter . Having said that I have my old ray marine hybrid touch plotter I removed now as I needed all axiom pro for lighthouse 4 the old plotter only goes to 3. If you want it....
@@DavesBoat What size is it - i may have a use for it!
@lovelifeloveboat I'll check when I get home
@@DavesBoat It may fit let me know what bits and pieces you have pulled out and I may make you an offer - give me a shout on the Sealine Forum
Thanks Dave, I know you've moved on to bigger things now, but for beginners like me with an S28 these videos are very helpful. QUESTION though, Do you know anywhere i can get an hing system for the radio arch on the S28 ??
I don't but if you join sealineforums.co.uk there's a guy called cannonmike on there he's got sally Jane and has had the arch hinged so he can probably point you in the right direction
Nice soundtrack
Don’t know how I missed this bloody you tube not sending me notifications. Good to see you back
Looking good 🎉
We see you go out for a little run. We are on the princess just the other side of the trawler(mid river mooring)
@@lukekirby4180 nice boat how do you find it on the mooring rather than on the marina and with shore power ? Is be paranoid about not enough battery life 🤣
You should get yourself to where I live now, 365 days of boating weather!! 🇦🇺 ☀️ ☀️
@@marinepilotchris3048 you moved to Australia.? Which bit ?
@@DavesBoat yeah, it was a bit of a whirlwind! I got offered a job a few months ago. My feet didn’t hit the ground and arrived a few weeks ago, I’m in Western Australia
Good to see you back on your boat. Upgrades look great
Yeah Dave’s back, I’ll try getting down Thursday Friday if you about
@@jdsfairlinetarga3790 off out on boat day of training Friday but I'll be around that evening and around all day Thursday pottering
see you in banana wharf for a beer. If you need a engineer Chris at signature marine is on site.
Sounds like an outstanding idea 👍
Good to see you back Dave. My boat is in Poole so may see you on the water one day. Good luck Steve 😀
Thanks, you may well, I'm sure I'll head to Poole at least once.
Hopefully see you out on the water 😉
Hopefully if you do see me come over and say hi
@@DavesBoat 👍
Good luck matey. See you at some point all going well
Yep.indeed definitely
Lots more to do and activity in the Solent and WR could pretty much handle the Solent most of the year round being fairly sheltered although coming out past calshot can be fun on a summers day with lots of wash from boats.
Boat wash she's fine in its the weird every direction at once 1m rolling chop you get specifically on the humber she's horrible in :( although I have to admit I'm still not confident in shafts and rudders much prefer out drives so if I don't get on then she'll be getting replaced with something on out drives or IPS probably.
@@DavesBoat Ahh the Solent does have its own chop especially between the Southampton to cowes crossing due to all the tides colliding with each other plus the wind. Another thing to watch out for is the tide running through the hamble marinas making mooring interesting. Also worth noting that anywhere you go to moor in the Solent will require a lot of money so your anchor will soon be your friend for cheaper trips out 👍🏻
@@jameslines5080 yes I had noticed the chop it's no where near as bad as.the Humber mouth so shouldn't be an issue hopefully, I'm actually looking forward to using the anchor more as there's really no where to use it up here so looking forward to lazy days and anchor that's why I fitted the solar panel so I don't need to use the generator.
@@jameslines5080 the mooring on tide is something I've already considered since I have literally zero experience so for the first run I'll be taking an experienced skipper with me to do some quick instruction with me on berthing in the flow hopefully I'll pick it up pretty quickly
So good to see you back. Good luck for your future adventures.
Ta muchly hope to be back more often shortly
Good luck with the new location. I did my sailing courses down in the Solent. Loads of interesting places to visit. Hovercraft, boat transporters, ferries etc etc, very busy but you can always find something to do.. Sure the weather is a bit better too.
Busy I'm good with it's more the predominant wind and shit sea state of the Humber mouth and lack of access to facilities and skills that's the problem, so I'm optimistic the south coast will be much better
@@DavesBoat I liked the fact it was quite busy, always something going on. Sure there are loads of good facilities, not had any real experience. I did like it down there. Sea state was generally good as you are mostly sheltered, if not, there were rivers to escape to. Beaulieu was lovely. I know what you mean about finding skilled people, my S28 is in Greece, not easy there. Thanks for the engine servicing videos. Very helpful when I was clueless.
Glad they were some help it's why I made them so others can learn
Ooh, you are coming down to my neck of the woods 😂
I am indeed, if you see in the news about a yacht crashing or sinking check me out 🤣
@DavesBoat 😆. In the summer there are supposedly more boats on the river Hamble than there is in the whole of Scotland 🤔
Lol I can believe that
Looking forward to the content down south - did you manage to get a rib / small boat in the end?
I havent yet but when I go down to move wr I'll be calling in and looking at some axopar 28's
I was going to text you this morning (but decided against it since it was 5am!), I didn’t see WR when I passed the last few days so I was wondering where you’d disappeared to!
Yeah south coast solo handling the big bitch on Grimsby is hard work so going for sunnier climate and hopefully easier / more.useavle waters
Last few times I went to try and go out the wind was always too bad or the Humber chop was stupid as usual so just kinda given up and my back is that bad now I can't even service the engines myself so need it to be somewhere with easy access to people to do work
@@DavesBoat you’ll have much more fun in the Solent! You’ll be able to get out much more, good choice!
@@marinepilotchris3048 certainly hope so plus I'll be going for "holidays" so I'll be there for extended periods to catch good weather. Although I can't say the 10k extra per year berthing was a sweet pill to swallow
Why go for a brand new boat Dave?
Its just a thought if i'm going for a small rib or something then new makes sense if i go for something bigger then it'll have to be 2nd hand
Good to see you back Dave 👍
ta although still irregular it appears :)
This is just what I needed - we have a Sealine S34 with twin KAD32s and I'll be doing our servicing in future. Just bought service parts from Volvo and nearly died, so will be getting cheapos next time!! Thanks for this excellent video.
My boat is moored next to XO boat he’s very happy with 👍
Have you found your mooring south coast Nice video
I have a couple of options open to me im just waiting to hear back from premier universal that's my preferred place if not then I'm gonna try and get on hamble point
@@DavesBoat look forward to more videos Cheers Dave
Great vlog , Sargo 31 Parker Adams have looks a good boat
I like the brigs, dunno if it suits the North Sea though, wouldn’t mind a brig down south to enjoy the better weather
Well they're a rib and ribs are pretty good at sea going, I'll do a quick my thoughts video some point this week as I've come away with a few options and thoughts.
Be able to see the off shore power boat races of Isle of Wight matey if you got yourself a mooring down south.
Yep hopefully wild rose will be down there within a month or 2
Hi Dave, great walk around - so many others haven't been at all good! I have sent you an email about a new to the market 1 year old IRON... may be too small, but is certainly priced well. I have seen it in the flesh and there isn't a scratch that I could see anywhere!
Yes I saw the email thanks will give it a look
I am definitely trying to decide whether to move to Garmin, or upgrade to Axiom at present!
i already had an older raymarine and older ray marine stuff so I just kinda stuck with that, garmin would probably have been better tbh to work with my watch but the ray marine stuff works really well so all good.
New boat Dave? Do tell?
It'll be in the video when I get back and edit it down
@@DavesBoat hope you had a great day @ NEC 😃
Keep us posted Dave 😊
Hi Dave great video. Where do you get your sealine parts from, I have just boat an S42 and struggling to get parts. Steve Atwell
Just have to shop around unfortunately if I can't get exactly the part I get as close as I can and make it work or find something similar, britboatparts occasionally have some bits but no guarantee
Great video and good kit. Have also just bought one and the DAB instructions are not clear about needing to update are they. One question for me, that cable from the antenna to the DAB module ends in connector that seems to be locked in once inserted. Is there an easy way to remove them do you know?
There's a little clip you need to release doesn't look like it does but give it a prise with your finger nails then then connector will pop off
