As a homeschooled Christian and a fan of games with this type of worldbuilding, this is fascinating. We often hear it said “show, don’t tell”. But perhaps sometimes we need to know when to NOT show OR tell. There’s a very delicate balance needed to make a world feel both empty and alive. I think Hollow Knight and Rain World both do this very well, I would love to see you do a video on either of those!

~12:30-13:00 When I was like 11 remember doing something similar in the first Assassin's Creed game, running up against the walls on the edge of the map (which aren't invisible in that game, by the way, they're translucent but clearly visibly marked to the player) as if I could somehow get through and explore the world beyond them. I don't know why I imagined there would be a world to explore lol, but I did

If it's any comfort, I worked a few summers at fancy hotels, and I can't relax at one the same way, now. I can sort of feel all the work going on behind the wall to make it seem effortless. I'm generally conscious of all the departments and what everyone must be doing at any given time I'm in the hotel. It sounds similar to your thing with theme-parks.

As a kid I got this exact feeling playing Spyro 1. A few levels are like this but specifically the first world Stone Hill has you climb on the border wall of the level, It's blocked off by invisible walls after a bit further but it just felt so exciting to basically be on the edge of the map and be able to look in from above. It felt like I was already halfway out of the level, and if I could just break this invisible barrier there would be something further, something more.

I really relate to what you said about being a child and expecting game worlds to continue beyond where they're built. You actually reminded me of a memory of doing the same thing with pokemon, but with the ocean routes. I spent hours tracing the edges of ocean routes in Diamond and SoulSilver, just desperately looking for a place where the rocks that mark the border of the routes were wide enough apart to pass through, into the wide ocean beyond. I don't remember why I was doing this really, like, what was I expecting beyond? What was I expecting to find in the ocean? I guess I wasn't expecting anything but something MORE. Maybe you had a similar experience, since you didn't describe what you were thinking you'd find beyond as a child, looking at the border of RuneScape or beyond national park. Idk. Actually, I had a dream a month or so a month ago about going beyond the borders of the map of Sinnoh in Diamond and finding new towns. One was an island town that was sinking into a swamp, it had the mud that was on one of the southern routes (iirc) inside the town. Another was one on the side of a cliffy hill, and it had a clocktower in the middle, that was like, three stories tall. So, I guess I still have that want of seeing and wanting there to be a world beyond what you can access normally in games.

This exact feeling is why Shadow of the Colossus has stuck with me for so long. The entirity of the Forbidden Lands feels like one big beta test, so vast and empty and lonely, like you're not meant to ever have seen it, just as Wander wasn't. The gargantuan fields, barren recesses, and useless landmarks feel like they're all hinting at something bigger. Delving into the cut content of the game feels like opening the Necronomicon, seeing knowledge you can never unsee, that changes the way you look at the tiny world you're confined to into something untrusting.

I never played Shadow of the colossus, but "The Decade-Long Quest For Shadow of the Colossus’ Last Secret" by Jacob Geller made me feel somewhat similar to what you're describing. Must have been cool to play the game and traveling around that expanse when it came out, I'm jealous haha.

Spoilers but I think Danganronpa V3 does this. Everyone says the ending is meta and breaks the 4th wall, but the ending isn't referring to us, the player, so it's only breaking the 4th wall in-universe and therefore breaking the 3rd wall. We know this because real life doesn't have Danganronpa TV shows where we watch high schoolers murder each other for entertainment.

Since I can remember, even as a child, my reaction to tricks was always of curiosity. I really wanted to piece out the trick, find out how it's made, why it works. There was a broadcast tv show here in Brazil presented by Val Valentino as his character, the "Masked Magician". He'd do a trick before the commercial break, and then after he would reveal how it worked. Many magicians disagreed with that concept, and still do. But as a child I was absolutely fascinated by it. I remember going to school to talk with my friends about the latest trick, and something that stuck with me until today is that even when the trick was revealed, they still thought it was magic. They refused to believe in the "revelation", to the point some stopped watching once the commercial break came in. You bet that back in the day I was really annoying about that, but now I understand why they acted like it, and how it's just not the same for me. I'm still fascinated by how the "sausage" is made, and the feeling of making other people get lost in a fantastic world, willingly believe the lie for the sake of having fun is the greatest feeling in the world.

There's something similar in Silent Hill 4 where after rescuing Eileen from the hospital, you revisit all previous sectons and realize they're all connected by a weird, otherworldly staircase. It's very "behind the scenes" as it leads to the man who helps Henry defeat the main villain of the game.

I would call this more "Behind The Curtain" gameplay. Like The Wizard of Oz, you pull back the curtain and see that this elaborate head is just pulled by a small, ordinary man. It's part of the story, but it's showing you the guts behind the seeming magic.

The opening chapters of the original Half Life, Opposing Force, and Blue Shift are the same (and the 2nd half of Portal 2, again). Seeing the game world how it was, is, or should be when the player isn't there has always fascinated me. Black Mesa feels like a fully functioning secret base full of people doing secret work, and it's all just out of reach until you, the player, muck everything up by starting the actual game. I used to noclip to the areas along the tram ride of HL1 & BS but, like spoiling the magic trick, it always felt hollow to explore...because suddenly the doors lead nowhere, the people said and did nothing.

The entirety of Bloodborne feels like it keeps breaking the 3rd wall. It starts as a pretty normal gothic horror, but each level reveals a new layer of horrifying secrets, manipulation and dream realities that shine a new light on previous locations and story beats. The moment you first see the amygdalas and realize they've been watching you from the very start, in a place you thought was safe, is really creepy.

i once worked in a cinema where we let birthday parties have a "peek behind the curtain", the "backstage". before digitization of cinema the projectors where huge hunky, loud, moving apparatuses which were probably mysterious machines to the uninitiated compared to modern projectors that basically look like a grown up versions of a dvd player you would have at home. but i also felt like letting ppl look behind the scenes would rob them a bit of that cinema "magic". i sometimes wondered if i ruined cinema going for someone? but when we let the birthday kid start their movie that they were about to watch, they luckily were very keen to rush back into the theater to experience the cinema "magic", wanting to be fooled again and forget about the quick peek under the rugs. i always felt like portal was probably inspired by boundary breaking glitches or debug features like "noclip" in gameengines that portal also was developed in. finding glitches in games was kind of one way of me playing games back then by breaking them with the given tools every other player had too but no one dared to or envisioned to without resorting to modifying game files or game memory. driving up walls in racing games, exiting vehicles at certain geometries, exploiting cut scenes to end up in places where you are definitely not supposed to be in. i am waiting for a game developer to create the illusion of a glitch where you just see non diagetic prototype textures and t-pose models that look like they were forgotten there, but were not! like a cognitive trap to keep you from digging further and finding a real glitch, satisfied with what you found already.

You get a similar feeling in Fromsoftware games, especially in areas with little to no reward for exploring. In most cases Elden Ring will reward you for exploring every nook and cranny with rare loot or crafting materials and 4ish years later I'm still finding things I missed however it's not quite the same. The very deliberately hard platforming sections to get to a secret boss is not really all that transgressive. It is cool how you'll be walking along and see an item out of reach or a rock that's a close enough distance for you to jump on it so you go on a bit of an adventure to figure out where that path leads. It leans toward transgression by being off the beaten path and difficult to get to. unfortunately, the floating platforms are the perfect size for you when you land. The space was made for you to interact with given the tools the game provided and it feels less like a transgression and more like a very annoying side road after a while. The magic disappears and all that's left is a chore.

Anor Londo in DS1 is a classic example, the entire level basically takes place on the set dressing as it has you running along very thin rafters and bannisters
