Massive difference, I bet you're happy with the results! Bit of a random question, what's the plant between the Hedera and the Fatsia at 6:39, please?
@finnkel There is a dracaena limelight in a pot, is that the one you mean.
@@jimspalmsuk5098The plant just behind the dracaena, right against the fence
That is a really nice greenhouse. Do you heat it much Jim, and if so have you ever tried to work out how much it costs each winter to protect your plants in there given the fabulously reasonable price of our fuel!?
@xenu-dark-tony I don't heat the greenhouse, it would cost a small fortune. I just keep it frost free. The heat only come on 3 times over winter, so didn't notice any increase in my fuel bill.
Great job Looks amazing
My emerald star looks manky up here in the North East. Beautiful when it arrived. Knackered now
@vincenzecalzone8666 They don't hold up as well as the superstar. They do look good if we get a decent summer and out grow the winter damage.
Thanks for the update Jim. Having 2nd thoughts on getting these Cordyline. Pity as theyre lovely plants. Do you have Charlie boy ? Is it any hardier ?
@TropicalJungleIreland yes I have Charlie boy and southen splendour and would say are similar hardiness.
Hard to ignore at that price. I've tended to grow my own from seed but at this price they can be treated as annuals
@@vincenzecalzone8666 my thoughts exactly 👍
Great job Jim. I did exactly the same as you with my bamboo 6 years ago. Few bits came back but with dedication all removed. No regrowth for 5 years+.
Hey Jim Steve and Michele here from the west mids Always viewing your new videos Yu have an amazing array of plants and we are on our journey to create a jungle garden If you have time in your busy schedule we would love you to review our videos and give us your honest feedback
@@tropicsinworcestershire I love seeing others tropical gardens, I'll definitely give them a look👍

@@tropicsinworcestershire That garden is something else, lovely pond and some really nice palms 👍
@@jimspalmsuk5098 many thanks Jim Really appreciate your comments I look forward to seeing your next video Ps if you ever have any Persian shield cuttings I would love to buy from you as unfortunately we lost ours last year and they are very hard to come by. Ok forward to your next video
@@tropicsinworcestershire Thanks for the reminder, I've been meaning to take some cuttings 👍
Could you separate those palms ? I have had success separately trachys, thanks will keep a eye open for them.😊
@estherterrier6400 They can be split by washing off soil and carefully untangling the roots. The odd one might die, but I've had good success dividing washingtonia 👍
Good job on the bamboo removal
@daphneking3954 Hard work but well worth it 👍
I’ve always lost mine in a cold greenhouse.
@bloggalot4718 I do find kept dry, cold but frost free they should survive. But it does take a few years to get some sort of hardiness. The one's I have in the ground have survived -7c for several nights. They are one of the first and fastest palms to bounce back after winter 👍
@@jimspalmsuk5098 I have kept them dry in the winter but they eventually succumb. I have one left out of four which is just starting to put out a new leaf. I will keep my fingers crossed this winter.
@@bloggalot4718 Good luck
Just found your video/channel.. great info.. thanks a bunch.. I just bought one a few weeks ago.. and now researching on winter protection, here in France, Zone 8B... Cheers!
Manihot not all that hardy I don't think. My mate had one for 10 years with a thick woody stem. Left out for the first time winter just gone and it went almost down to the ground so defo overwinter
@ellerby83 You are right, there not reliably hardy. There's a lot of mixed opinions. I will be very cautious where and when I plant in out.
Well done Jim on locating some rate beauties. Thanks for sharing. I too got a Manihot this year after searching for 5 years and trying to grow from seed and failing. Bought it from Big Plant Nursery for £45, haven't planted it out yet, still digging the new bed for it. My search for a Brassiaopsis Mitis continues, and the prices aren't getting any cheaper.😃
@@user-oz5ip9nr2w They will have some mitis ready at jungle in a box soon. If you email them, they will let you know when they'll be ready 👍
Great choices Jim. I have the Tropical storm Colocasia and I can say they are the slowest growing one I have. Literally 1/10 the size of others and it’s spending more time clumping than growing up. The Manihot is another great one and it’s supposed to be very easy. I was given a couple of small ones. Unfortunately they died the first winter so I think it’s best to plant it next year like you are planning. As far as the Brassaiopsis I’ve never see one for sale in North American so I am envious.
@tropicalpdx1341 Regards to the tropical storm, probably why they not seen much in the uk . Slow growth rates and rubbish weather , not a good combination. I really looking forward to seeing the brassaiopsis grow .
So I actually looked up the Tropical Storm Colocasia and they only grow 18-24” tall and wide. That explains it. I guess I should have read the descriptions more carefully when I order online. 😂
@tropicalpdx1341 yeah I have a bad habit of buying plants first and researching after.
Fantastic plant haul Jim 😃 The Brassaiopsis is great choice i know they still hard to get hold of the price is reasonable I think. Enjoy planting them up bro
I've said it before and I will say it again. Gunnera Tinc/Mani/Cryptica banned! But you can walk into any garden centre and buy a running bamboo. I have literally stopped people buying runners in garden centres, who had no idea what they were buying. I have a few verities of Fargesia in the garden. Obviously all clumpers and they still have to be managed. But they are not going to pop up 6m away and smash through your floor. Or even worse, your neighbours floor!
@David_Banner your right, at very least they should have a large warning sticker or tag on them.
@@jimspalmsuk5098 We all make mistakes and should learn from them. But sometime a little information and guidance goes a long way.
Mine is a fargesia in a pot 7 years ..pot bound but still ok
@wendymitchell4004 I may well keep a chunk and pot, just incase I need some movable high.
Hate bamboo with a passion. Getting rid of mine too. Lesson learnt.
@@johnmerchant8981 My thoughts exactly 👍
Thanks for the video. Was very helpful. The peppermint varigated strain is cool too.
As someone mentioned before, Psedosasas are very agressive. If I were you, I would replace it with non-agressive genus of bamboo like Fargesia, especially Fargesia robusta which is lush green and sun tolerant. Alternatively, if you would like to keep bamboo like foliage without a bamboo you could try some of Podocarpus sp. (e.g. henkelii, macrophyllus, saliginus).
@jangrodzicki2855 Thanks I'm still thinking about filling the space. Really not sure yet, bamboo is not a plant I paticularly like but it does serve a purpose. I may use it in a large pot to give hight and screen the shed 🤔
@jimspalmsuk5098 Then check Podocarpus species mentioned above, especially South African Podocarpus henkelii. Those are tough shrubs/trees (depends how you prune it), resistant to all sorts of conditions, it can imitate bamboo. In my opinion they are underrated by people interested in exotic gardening.
@jangrodzicki2855 Thanks I'll look into that 👍
Hey Jim. Your bamboos are pseudosasa japonica, common name 'arrow bamboo'. Any bamboo with 'sasa' in the name are aggressive runners. You're doing the right thing mate.
@waynemapledoram Tha is for the information, it's hard craft digging it out but worth it for the peace of mind 👍
Good luck iv keep mine in a pot but thing its time for chop with seeing your problems
@@steverichardson4374 I'll probably do a few videos on this over the next week. It's going to take a while to get rid of all of it.
I have never put a bamboo in the ground for that reason. Save your back and get a mini digger in 🤣 Good luck with it 👍
@jasonspalmparadise I've cut it all back today. Tomorrow I'll attempt to pull the roots out. Wish me luck 🙏
I wouldn’t have the heart to remove that big clump bro think it looks fantastic where it’s positioned. Can understand your frustration on keeping it contained tho. Ive got 5 different kinds all in big 50ltre pots would love put them in the ground to see the full potential but I know how they can dominate the landscape and I’ve just not got the space to allow it 🤨 all best to the massive work load tho Jim need get somebody give you hand on this job
@Plant_Mad_Paul The wife doesn't mind a bit of work, she always helps me out. 👍
Ok thx Jim
Excellent plants in your shade corner. How are your cordyline emerald green and superstar getting on this season?

Hi Jim how do you overwinter your Musa sikkimensis?
@craignorthern9480 All I do is wrap the stem , fleece or bouble wrap works.
@@jimspalmsuk5098 so treat it the same as musa basjoo. Thanks 👍
@@craignorthern9480 Pretty much, not quite so hardy.
@@jimspalmsuk5098 thanks 👍
Hi Jim, if you left a sago palm out through the winter is there a temperature that you would say is absolutely too low for it ? We bought one a few weeks ago and I’m short of indoor space for overwintering and don’t have a greenhouse. Where are you situated ? You sound East Anglian to me.
@kateeveritt3292 Yes I'm in Suffolk, we got down to - 5c but only for 2 nights. And had + temperatures day times. If it was -5 for a week they would be dead. It's more about duration of the cold. I would say -8c would probably will a sago, or at least defoliate.
Hi Jim , we like your channel. Another question about Sago palms. I’ve order a young one and it’s arriving sometime next week. We’re in Victoria , British Columbia ,Canada ( the west coast ,Pacific Ocean) . Surprisingly we’re area 9A hardiness . Would it be a good idea just to keep it in the pot for now to be able to take it inside for the winter ?
@alexandredelahaye It would be easier to keep in a pot for the first couple of years . I always consider The probability that when buying a new plant there probably been green house grow and never seen full winter conditions. Find your best microclimate and leave it there , you'll want to bring it in if you get a prolonged freeze or anything below -4c.
@@jimspalmsuk5098 thanks Jim, I checked my sago palm this morning and was thrilled to see it’s sprouting from the centre !
@@kateeveritt3292 Nice 😀
Hi Jim - Nice plants. Whats the reason for the UK Plant passport? - I thought that was only necessary for importation from Europe?
@albey1816 That's the uk for you, it's all about tracking plant movement and reducing pests and diseases. And you have the pleasure of being charged for it, what a rip off.
Ive bought from Grow Paradise a few times and Craig really packs them well. Excellent quality plants too.

Oh my, how wonderful! Is it planted in the ground or in containers? I live in the eastern country of Iraq. The temperature reaches 53 degrees. The only solution for agriculture is to plant trees and plants in very dense In a close and dense so that they can So he can resist the deadly climate. Do you recommend this method?

Thx for the update Jim. That littoralis looks ace. Grown loads since you took a punt and planted it.
wow, that's a stunner is it root hardy at all?
@richardfrais_backyard_projects Unfortunately not it's a true tropical
I live in Northern California, USA and our summer last year was like this. Everything was very slow. By the fall, the plants all looked pretty good, but it almost felt like Summer was skipped! This year is very different, we had a mild winter which set up the garden to outperform most years, and many plants are ahead of schedule, though we are in a heatwave right now and it's been rough on some of my garden. I guess you really need the happy medium to achieve the perfect look.
@WillEberli I'm glad to hear some are getting a good summer. Here in the uk we never seem to get the weather right. Last year cool and wet, this year the same 2022 was hot and bo rain for 3 months. Maybe next year 🤞
@@WillEberli we always get mild winters (at least comparing to most part of USA ) BUT also mild summers 😓
Looks bloody fantastic bro. I do think you could get another bed out in front of your summerhouse 😂 who needs grass. Done away with it in my back garden, all tho the the birds in the bird table do like to throw the seeds about I need to keep pulling seedlings up from among the stones. The crocosmia are one of my fav plants got few verities but only lucifer is in flower at the moment. I had ago at growing brumansia from seed this spring, got 3 good size plants now noticed yesterday ones got a flower bud on it 😮 lol well made can’t wait see it. My canna and dahlia struggled this year tho some that I never got around to planting out have now moved in to the places that have got hit the hardest by slug damage.
Plus I do love that tender blue agave, just pings in the sun.
@Plant_Mad_Paul It's been frustrating this year but there's always hope . Maybe the weather will change and things will actually grow 🤞
@@Plant_Mad_Paul yeah I love it too
My garden got a bunch of slug damages. Cannas and hostas all gone once the shoot comes out. Gladiolus leaves that looks like a monstera😂
@@fansaaga4033 I feel your pain 😢
Ive had no other choice than to resort to the blue pellets this year or else i’ve no leaves left on my hostas, i think its the amount of rain were getting here in the uk that’s getting the slugs all fired up.
@@BordsCycles I now grow more palms and hard plant that slugs can’t bite into. And also at night I go out with scissors and chop em all into half. There now a tons of those big red Spanish ones some are 10cm. Some times I want to burn everything down when I see 10 slugs on a single leave like hole punchers
Hello how is it now? I would like to grow these and i live in dublin. Also have you ever grown raphis excelxa? If yes how does it do
@ryanacar3773 livinstona is doing OK just needs a bit of summer heat. I do have a Raphael in the ground and it's doing well. I'll give them a look in my next video 👍
@@jimspalmsuk5098thx a lot. I’m doing a plant hunt in Hong Kong a bunch of palms naturalised here and seeds from palms drop and grows everywhere ( p. Robellenii , L . chinenses , Raphis syagrus……). I’ll bring some seeds back and try to grow them.
@@fansaaga4033 I would do the same 👍
Managed to rot the Blue Hawaii’s that I dug up and put in the greenhouse, but got some of the runners popping back up in my border. They must be more hardy than they are given credit for.
A lot of colocasia are tougher than you think. Quite often the runners/pups will survive when the main bulb rots out. Good to hear you have some coming back 👍
