I’ve had jacks giant for a few years now and they do well also in shadier drier conditions compared with other Colocasias
Growing Mojito for first time this year. Enjoy watching your videos at the end of a long day

That is a really nice greenhouse. Do you heat it much Jim, and if so have you ever tried to work out how much it costs each winter to protect your plants in there given the fabulously reasonable price of our fuel!?

@xenu-dark-tony I don't heat the greenhouse, it would cost a small fortune. I just keep it frost free. The heat only come on 3 times over winter, so didn't notice any increase in my fuel bill.

I'm growing Jack's Giant for the first time this year. I started with 3 bulbs/tubers and planted them directly in the ground about 6 weeks back. The largest leaf I have is 24" L x 17" wide. My climate is much different so not a great comparison, but that's what I'm seeing so far. Hot and humid here in SE Texas with frequent rain, so they are loving it. Temps since I planted them have generally been between 30-35C as the high and night time lows around 25C.

They will grow like weeds in that climate.
You'll have to do a video on them at some point 👍

@@jimspalmsuk5098 Colocasia seem to do so well here, so I have been buying a bunch. Once they all start looking like something I will do a video. I'm up to 4 different types and have 7 more on the way.
I also found another large variant called "Mammoth", very similar to Jack's Giant in just about every way.

@@tropicalpdx1341 I bought a few 'Mammoth' youngsters about 2 weeks ago (mid July '24) and waiting to see how they fare. To my mind it doesn't matter what fancy-leaved colocasias there are, the esculenta, Jack's Giant and the Mammoth are the most fascinating with that kind of graining and variation in the green.

If you go indoors to an air-conditioned room, that's often how cool it is here inthe UK. Admittedly we've had a few 90f days so far this year, and maybe 10 0r 15 days in the low 80s, but by and large the sun is very restrained in both its effects and appearances. Now I'm ancient that suits me fine, but when I was younger I loved scorchio summers. Do you get a diabolical winter or is it not too cold there? You are down towards the gulf if I'm not wrong - Waffle House territory - so not sure if you understand the terminology 'winter', ha ha!

So I would say Colocasia Jacks Giant is the biggest leaved Colocasia you can grow but Colocasia Mammoth is the best big leaved Colocasia for a UK Climate.
Jacks Giant origin is from South America and likes a bit of heat to grow well. Yours is in your hot house so is getting the conditions it likes.
Mammoth is very similar but grows large leaves over a metre even in cooler summers so is more suited to getting large leaves in our climate.
Your Colocasia are looking great by the way. I’m starting to remember why I used to collect them.

Cheers for the information, I haven't tried mammoth. I'll definitely keep a eye out for that one.
It's certainly a challenge growing colocasia in our climate with the weather all over the place .
