ive been binging all you rvideos! you deserve way more subscribers- i like the deep analysis of what makes things work in different spaces which i think is easy to miss while scrolling through all the pinterest photos!
The boots is so real! My leather boots, my leather belt, and hats are hung right by my apartment (no shoes and no pants immediately after work haha) but it is a vibe I so much love.
cute! i love that 👍
I don't think you are being honest. You have made a niche for yourself in the market by putting queer in front of your design. That's all marketing and branding and you are playing the capitalist game as hard as anyone else.
if i’m being honest with myself, i struggled with this, too, initially, but the conclusion i’ve come to is this. branding and selling skills you’re good at isn’t inherently capitalist. two thousand years ago when you brought grain you grew or yarn you spun to market, you were doing the exact same thing, just with more connection to land and community, so it didn’t feel as gross emotionally. it was just how you made your living. you were still carving out a niche for yourself by focusing on + selling what you were good at. under capitalism, the primary (and frequently only) goal is profit, and, yes, earning money / creating a livable wage is absolutely one of my goals for this channel / business. i’ve never made more than $16k/year because i’m autistic + nonbinary and i have trouble finding and keeping “normal” jobs specifically ~because~ capitalism only cares about making the system more money and not about making sure people can live a decent life. some of my other big goals that are genuinely more important than the dollar amount i’m making are to: 1. build community (beyond just online stuff), 2. heal / find my speaking voice + come into my fullest self, 3. become a good storyteller through video editing, 4. help people create homes that foster honest + authentic + radical relationships with loved ones and community (whether by designing their home myself or by educating + empowering people to do it themselves), 5. eventually hire other people who also tend to have a hard time finding + keeping jobs due to systemic eugenics, 6. help be one of the catalysts that shifts our cultural understanding of interior design from bougie + shallow to healing + life-giving, 7. and redistribute corporate dollars (via sponsorships) by traveling around doing makeovers for people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford a designer. i was living in an rv that was older than me without a fridge or running water for a year and a half, so yeah, one of my goals is to make money. everyone deserves a livable wage. but how you approach something is just as - if not more - important than the end goal. i’m never going to be a billionaire. i don’t want that. just because i’m forced into this system doesn’t mean i can’t use the resources that are available to me to critique that system.
@@anticapitalisthomedesign You literally just described what capitalism is. I think a lot of people are confusing capitalism with corporatism.
Re Prep space in front of a window: Not always a good idea. My kitchen window faces west and the afternoon sun is blinding - unless I close the curtains - which defeats the idea of the window providing task lighting. Same is probably true for east or south facing windows. Might be a good idea for a north facing window.
definitely a valid point to consider 👍
I have a feeling that on occasion when people enter my home and see my unhinged decor, they may wonder if I’m autistic too. And they’d absolutely be right 🤣
lol 🤣🤣🤣
Gen Z style!! Yes what is that! I’ve been inspired by it originally but now it feels overdone. Can’t really define it other than trendy post modern. Know a gen z who has this style.
exactly! so many labels that feel universally known (esp in interior design) are pretty undefinable when it comes down to it 🫠
This is such a great vid! So often all the cool suggestions for lights are pendants and it just doesn’t work in many spaces with low ceilings and it’s so hard to find flush and semi flush lights that are at all charming. I ended up DIYing a semi flush ceiling light with a small Nelson Bubble lamp flying saucer and a ceiling fixture with a short rod from Color Company. I also one of those drop shipped Chinese “bauhaus” milk glass fixtures - but sadly it is not the creamy color glass it is optic white. Don’t love it but it was cheap and fine for now. The bedroom I put a Minimus ceiling fan light which is … very minimal and unobtrusive. Anyway thanks for this content.
thank YOU for this comment and it’s my pleasure ✨
also would love to see the diy if you feel like dming it to me!
Would have been helpful to show in the beginning what a boob light looks like, I had to google it. Otherwise nice video
you’re so right, i was totally assuming that everyone was familiar with that phrase. sorry about that!
I really disagree with solid coloured couches not being ideal… I like to treat my couches like a base that I can then decorate with different blankets and pillows (in moderation, of course!) I feel like if I had patterned couches, I would have much less leeway to change up the other less expensive elements in the room as often as I’d like.
that’s totally fair! a solid couch makes a lot more sense in your context 👍
@@anticapitalisthomedesign yeah different strokes for different folks I guess haha ☺️
i just discovered your page and i’m in love. queer anti-capitalist & have good taste - we needed you! ❤❤❤
You’re SO REAL for hating on coloured lampshades!!! I bought the ikea Regnskur pendant shade recently because I was looking for something George Nelson-esque on a budget, and while I love the look of it when it’s off, when it’s on it puts out horrible blue-green light and really limits how much light actually passes through the shade. I think the bulb I have in it is 1000+ lumens, but it’s nowhere near bright enough to read with, or even light up the one couch it’s hanging over. Eventually I want to diy a white fabric shade to put over the wire frame, but choosing the right stretchiness of fabric seems tricky 🤔
i know right? they’re so fun in theory, but not in practice. i had the round version in white in a previous apartment, and i found that putting a smaller paper lampshade inside it helped distribute the light more evenly, because the fabric they chose (and most fabric in general) didn’t do a very good job distributing light. that might help so you can get a stretchier fabric?
@@anticapitalisthomedesign oh that’s such a good hack adding a paper shade to distribute the light. I’m not sure if I could find one that would fit inside mine because it’s such an oblong shape, but maybe I could even try DIYing it! Just gotta make sure it’s fire safe lmao…. 🫥
@@deeeno6867 yes! please only use an led light bulb if you do the paper lol
The slumlord I am dealing with INSISTS that I get an electrician to swap out lighting fixtures because they assume that all tenants are arsonists who long to start electrical fires.
that’s when tulip shades (or diy alternatives) are the perfect choice!
Great video! Could you male a similar style video for ceiling fans?
it’s already on my list!
Dream video❤ Thanks for this!!!
you’re welcome 🥰
the work that went into this is unparalleled!!
thank you ☺️ i was even hoping to add little sound effects when the pictures popped up but i ran out of time lol
Hey love the second hand lamp comment. For most people if you have a re-store near you you’re gonna likely find some cool lights there! If you’re in NYC I highly recommend big reuse in Brooklyn for secondhand lights/lamps (great books/media, dishware selections too) (Also if you go here on the subway don’t follow the google maps directions, get off at smith/9th and walk across the Lowe’s parking lot, will save a lot of time)
i love the restore! a little hit or miss for lighting where i’m at, but always worth a look 👌
I've been looking for a video like this!! thank you for compiling all these resources!
you’re welcome! glad it was helpful ✨
Side note- your nails are so pretty! The colors❤
thank you ✨
I think number 61 with its travertine base and three light bulbs also has shades made of alabaster, or at least glass imitating it. It goes really well with the travertine. Darling, you look great as always and produce unique content. Thanks for the video, wish you become a top youtuber as soon as possible.
thank you 🥰🥰🥰
Wow, so many gorgeous iterations of the boob light! Who knew?! Especially enamoured of the generation Z ones and the shiny, creamy glass ones. Actually, kinda obsessed with those creamy fixtures! I wannna touch them and lick them! Am I going mad? Oh, these Humanhome ones are also drop dead gorgeous!
I want to watch your video badly, but the hand gestures are so intense and so distracting that these videos are unwatchable 😭😭😭
sometimes my hands just have a mind of their own 🤷♀️
Thanks for showing options that beyond what others are showing. I got some great ideas to replace what I can in my apartment. It's a beautiful pre-war building but the owner picked the ugliest lighting options possible. They aren't even boob lights. He tried to "design" and it's still bad. If only I could replace the ugly ceiling fans too, but we can't.
you’re welcome! glad you got some new ideas ☺️
Reason I've put off changing them is because the boob light has a large base and all the replacements I like have a smaller one. And I don't want to use a ceiling medallion.
that’s totally fair. i don’t have a solution for that yet, but i’ll think about it!
@@anticapitalisthomedesignThanks! There are many great ideas in the video.
**E M B R A C E T H E B O O B** not even two minutes in and I'm laughing
😅
Need to see the impractical booblight replacement video now
About the "ammonite" fixtures, i think you may have been thinking of diatomeas (not sure if it's the right word). They are microscopic but very famous for their various beautiful radial symmetrical shapes. Most famous are the drawings by biologist Erich Haeckel (hope i got the name right it's been more than a decade since i finished my biology degree)
ammonite was the word i was thinking of, but diatomeas definitely look more like the lights lol 😅
I'm desperately looking for a desk lamp that isn't too boring but also very functional (flexible positioning of the light) while looking cosy and not too office-y or at least office-y in a cool way, because I just have one room. If you feel like making this a series 😂
i added it to the list! might be a while though lol
Thanks for putting in all this work, I never saw anything like it in a Video. I really like it when creators give many actual options where to get things and i appreciate including a small etsy shop even if those are mostly too expensive - anyway i love to bookmark etsy products for inspiration. Visually, I like most of these options, depending on which room/style context they'd be in. Every single one would be a huge improvement for someone who still has booblights. However, even with average to low height ceilings I somehow mostly prefer pendants. I guess it's because they feel more casual and even if you were to hit your head they will swing 😂. Exception: my partner has huge (about 4 feet wide) but very flat rectangle white textile ceiling lights like an elevated flat sheet. They blend in with the ceiling when the lights are off and give a beautiful even glow, soften the ceiling and help with echoing rooms. He got them when a client had to shut down his clothing store. It's not that difficult to diy similar ones (albeit maybe a bit smaller) with a simple wooden frame and sewing a square piece of nice fabric with pockets in the corners to slid the four corners onto the frame. Buy simple flat fixtures for the lightbulbs and secure the frame with some wooden distancers onto the ceiling. It gives japanese vibes but not too literal, and you can exchange the fabric seasonally for different vibes and throw it in the laundry. I hope my explanation makes sense 😅 I agree on the fake gold, initially I thought it would tie in well with my vintage/antique brass things but learned quickly it didn't go at all and is just tacky, somehow you can almost always tell it's fake!
I literally own that print with the high waisted pants and the carabiner!
cute ✨
If you were paying attention, I totally screwed up and added doubles of the numbers 19, 46, and 95, so I've added a/b options for those links, because I wasn't about to spend an extra three hours fixing the numbers, re-exporting it, and re-uploading it. Also, just to clarify, the reason I kept saying "I don't know what to call it / how to describe it / etc" was specifically because the names of the sections are words that don't really mean anything. Modern doesn't actually mean anything. Traditional doesn't actually mean anything. But we still kind of culturally understand what visuals I'm referring to when I say that.
When you were organizing all of the categories on your mood board, I'm like "That's what my brain looks like ! " 🤣 Great video. Luv this format. Luv all the rich colors you used. ❤
lol same 😅 glad you loved it!
Great video. Thanks
you’re welcome!
Canva premium allows you to instantly remove the background of an image. May be worth checking out to save yourself some time!
hi friend!! i love your videos so much! i just wanted to let you know that, at least for me, the music in the background that has singing while you are talking can be a quite overstimulating!
thanks for letting me know! i'll definitely do my best to focus on music that doesn't have singing in the future 👍
i need you to do a home tour The plant in the background is telling me your home looks good!!!!
thanks! there should be one eventually, but we just moved a few months ago + have almost no disposable income, so it's going to take a while lol 😅
I’ve painted all my walls and I’ve painted my ceiling. Painting a ceiling is a special kind of hell lol. I don’t think I could be paid to do that EVER again.
yeah, ceilings aren't fun lol. out of curiosity, did you use a normal handheld roller or a roller on an extension? i've only ever done a handheld bc it was a tiny bathroom, and i imagine the extension would help a lot
@@anticapitalisthomedesign I tried with the extension since it was over a large space but I found it really difficult to get enough leverage with the extension. I had to use the handheld roller itself. Shoulder and neck pain for days! 😬
@@readwithbintou oh, that makes sense unfortunately 🙃
I really like everything *except* the glass coffeetable which looks like something I would have wanted in my college apartment in 2001
lol that's fair 😅
First of all, the sheer amount of time this must have taken you is admirable! I think it turned out SO good- everything felt mindful and well thought out. Loved this video! I live in a white box with a lot of cheaper furniture I'd like to swap out when $ isn't a barrier and found that introducing a large vintage wooden credenza completely changed the space. Wood is my savior... Oh how I wish decorating was free!
thank you! and i feel that so hard. that’s why i’m doing virtual makeovers for now lol 😅
Cobalt blue items are my new interior design obsession and you are the first person that drew my attention to them in your previous video; ever since I keep seeing them mentioned everywhere! They are supposedly a throwback to Y2K design! Anyway, love the space you put together! Also, being Greek I couldn’t help but notice your ΤΕΤΕΛΕΣΤΑΙ tattoo! Kinda intrigued by that, lol!
thank you ☺️ and for the tattoo, i was raised catholic, and even though i’m not catholic anymore, i still resonate with many of the teachings + stories of jesus of nazareth / yeshua / whatever name you want to call him. this was supposedly the last phrase he said before he died, and i take it to mean “i’ve done everything in my power, now i leave it up to god / the divine / source / the creator / etc.”
@@anticapitalisthomedesign ♥️ beautiful explanation, thank you!
Wow we really have a similar style! I liked the wooden room divider and didn't like the armchair, other than that... Perfect!
thank you ✨
Stellar job! Your picks were great and the outcome was amazing! Thanks for sharing this with us!🤍
thank you and you’re welcome lol 🥰
For adding character to a space i also like to display my interests or hobbies, for example i put all my cameras on a litte shelf :)
definitely should’ve mentioned that! a little hard to include in a mock-up though 😅
Love it! The colour of the ceiling goes perfectly with the dark red of the rug and the blue of the room divider, i like that colour combination 💖
thank you! and i agree 👍
Would love a home tour of your space ❤
it would be super boring right now, thanks to my extremely limited disposable income lol. i’ve got a bathroom makeover in the works though! hopefully by the time i move out i’ll have a full apartment tour ready to share 🤞
@@anticapitalisthomedesign I think it would be valuable to see regardless, to see how us normies with limited disposable income would decorate! I have a feeling even the simple details you've probably done to your space would be delightful
what things add character to your home??
