DUAL FUEL ENGINES - PART 12 ; why is exhaust temperature different at same loads on fuel and GAS
Did you know that Main Engine EXHAUST TEMPERATURE is significantly lower when burning Gas as fuel compared when on the conventional HFO/Diesel oil mode? Of course at the exact same LOAD/POWER….
And more importantly Do you know why?
First let me show you.. lets got to my engine parameters
So the Flame temperature of Methane and Ethane is almost 140°C lower than Fuel oil.
There you have it - this is the one of the factors, do let me know in the comments below if you know the other reason.. at the 50th comment, I will share the other one.
BTW I’m only talking about these 2 fuels as- basically the MEGI & MEGI-E engines are designed for these fuels

Sir, I have a question. The gas for the injection don't return to the gas tank but goes to venturizer. Isn't that kinda methane or ethane slip?? And what should we do if the ship is in the area that we cannot vent out the HC gas?
DO NOT RUN ON GAS.. run on compatible diesel /HFO fuel only

Hello sir, I have one doubt in DFDG while running in gas mode why exaust temp is high and in diesel mode exhaust temp less
During changeover from diesel to gas, try to check the position of waste gate valve and charge air by pass.

Does flame temperature means the combustion temperature?

what i fail to understand is why the PVU is placed before the vaporizer and why do they even need a PVU? And a reciprocating pump for liquid? Wouldn't it make sense if they had the reciprocating compressor placed after the vaporizer?🤔
they have tried that earlier on initial gen engines but it was a failure as the compressors required are 8 stage reciprocating type and had several operational issues and failure.. for the reciprocating/hydraulic driven PVU, this is MAN ES own concept and has proved much more effective than then previous gen compressors . the effective work done is lesser comparing the losses and spares involved. the size of the vaporizer is really very small and thus quantity of heating medium also required is lesser, so all in all its a great design improvement by MAN ES to have their own PVU. another key factor is the space requirement is lesser for the PVU unit over the compressors.. each engine has 3 PVU pumps, engine can operate comfortably even with 2..

What Air tapping is from 30 Bar? Why not from Control or Service air supply line ?
can also be from there but the air quality has to be dry air as the condition of the double wall pipe must not deteriorate with moisture over time. We are actually considering a change to have it from the control air outlet line as this will save on the MAC running hours.

in this version/ MEGI-E - All units must fire, no cut allowed else GAS operation (dual fuel) is blocked.. also all the Chief Limiters for each cylinder and the fuel index limiter must be at 110%.. this is MANBW statement and cant be altered. also in the MEGI-2.. 2nd gen for the MEGI concept engines, this unit cut off is possible also part load gas- part load fuel also possible.. but this is only on LNG fired engines... hence MEGI... (LNG).. whereas what i am working on is MEGI-E ... Ethane

Great video, thanks! Do the MEGI engines have a fuel sharing mode where any ratio of fuel oil and gas can be used? If so, how is it decided which ratio of fuel/gas to use? Or is it typically ran on dual fuel mode with just a small amount of pilot fuel
100% engine load - Pliot 4-6% max and the rest is Second (Gas) fuel.. this pillot 4-6% is the normal consumption even at lower loads.. so even at lower loads 30% engine power and up the gas is still 25 and pilot is 5... this engine MEGI-E can run only on full gas mode with 4-6% pilot.. for the injection timng/quantity the preset algorithm in the ECU controls this and does its own fuel index calibration depending on various parameters like Pcom,pmax, rpm, load, Tier III/II, fuel cal value, sulfur content, etc we cant change there is an option to go in to MANUA mode the newer gen MEGI-2 engines designed for Methane (LNG --NOT ETHANE) are designed for partial fuel partial gas and also one cylinder fuel other cylinders gas due to the new components and software
Hi sir. I am a chief engineer. There is an scr nox sensor error on mop. So man b and w has suggested to unlock the mop to install the parameter update tool. They told to input the password as manbw. But I couldn't unlock the mop b to input the password. So kindly tell the procedure to unlock the mop -b. Thanks in advance. pls try to reply me asap.

well, i havent been using gas on those machineries as the vessels i sail on have only gas designed for the main engine operation. I am certainly learning and reading the same too
