Another good dialogue in that show. 1:58, Grendizer proves to be very powerful in this anime than his previous iteration from decades ago. It only begs the age old question of who's stronger - this guy or Mazinkaiser? The villains or in this case - Zeola seems to find other ways to make Grendizer's power his greatest Achilles heel which is always a nice thing to see smart villains in these animes. 2:34, I feel Zeola will try to exploit this good will in some other way. Genzo's very cheerful in this anime compared to his other older version. I guess that's what happens when Sayaka and Kouji basically adopts Duke. 4:54, fascinating. Naida...noooooooo! You've got so much to live for! T_T Also, Duke accepting the ring from Kouji is such a callback to the Ota manga where Duke's identification to climb into Grendizer was in fact a ring compared to the necklace in the anime.

CH is in the manga and she's even a pop idol too which kinda makes her the Lynn Minmay of the manga minus the bad stuff from her. So the only way for Mazinger Z and Kouji to heal back their damaged parts is saying 'Mazin Flash!!' I thought that needed mention but here we are and I'm loving the deep cuts this anime does. 5:05, in the Gosaku Ota manga instead of a necklace that keeps Duke being attacked by Grendizer, he uses a ring for identification to Grendy instead of a necklace. Nice touch. 5:27, Kouji: OMG! What are you doing?! Duke: Umm, I don't think I'm good. Hikaru: Are you good...or evil? Me: Ooooh, what a cute little native person! Franklin, take a picture. Funny enough, same writer to Witch From Mercury is doing this anime. 1:55, Goro ain't a kid in this anime but a horse because guess they wanted to get to the juicy parts which is Duke's drama against the Vega empire which I can commend them for. No more of that big sombrero guy who happens to be funny and I don't see Danbei anywhere. XD Duke having this Shouchi Tsugami-like feel to him is quite something to me. We all know the original Duke in the old anime would rather beat the crap outta Kouji for saying something. Here, he loves Sayaka and Kouji lovingly. If you haven't checked out Kamen Rider Agito, do it. The main character is basically like Duke in this anime. 2:41, OH YEAH I SEE IT! Why didn't I notice that earlier?!

You know with how busted Grendizer here is, it would be a surprise for them to pull out Mazinkaiser right around the end to match it especially if they're going with the idea of a God creating Grendizer, who else but the machine that can surpass God, and defeat the Devil

2:23 Funny you say that... Mazinger Infinity is about 300 meters tall and so is the Hypsistos Z if I'm not mistaken, so they do indeed somehow stop them from moving past them. But at the same time, Byleth in FE3H and a group of regular Soldiers can stop a Dragon that takes up a 3x3 space from moving past them... or just flying over them... somehow, like sure the Sword of the Creator is a whipsword but it doesn't extend far enough to just rip stuff out of the sky and Byleth is more or less just a regular person, but at the same time I doubt it'd be fun if large enough bosses could just move over whatever blocks their way to get at the units they actually want to hit, like imagine if Infinity or Shin Dragon (Go (Bossfight) could just ignore the units in the way and just go straight for the pilot you need to keep alive or a Warship, and in the case of Shin Dragon (Go), it would probably be pretty broken if they could just move past enemy units especially seeing how nasty Warp is in the FE series letting you skip or trivialize entire maps, and considering it is big enough to warrant being counted as a Warship in at least one game last I checked (I think it was V), barring Emperor all the other Getters are actually pretty tiny in comparison, you could probably stick all of them onto it's Dragon head's forehead and still have room to fit more, or maybe just fit regular Shin Dragon on there by itself if we take Amuro's line of it being "the size of a mobile armor" in T seriously.

Super Robots are back!

Maybe Grendizer was built by Koji in the future and then sent back thousands of years in the past to protect Fleed. Koji already did something similar with Mazinkaiser in SRW 30.

Agreed that Grendizer is OP as it effortlessly dealt with what the Vega army threw at him. The Screw Crusher Punch at full power is probably due to Duke's emotions channelling it to go super fast and super strong. Kasado not putting up a fight and is asking for a round 2 against Duke. But seeing that the next episode title is a bit foreshadowing probably Duke will go crazy and just space-thunder Kasado to oblivion if what happens to Nadia affects him. At the pace they are going, it is probably 1 cour of 12 to 13 episodes since they are getting a lot of plot going. I recently read Gosaku Ota's version of Grendizer and it is really dark and the ending is something out of Devilman which I hope doesn't go too crazy. How about King Vega himself? It reminds me of the big evil in Great Mazinger like a ball of pure evil energy. King Vega is also voiced by Sasaki Nozomu who did Yusuke from Yu Yu Hakusho. (His voice has changed a lot due to him being a heavy smoker)

That one shot of Grendizer pinning down Zeoladizer is enough to keep my spines chilling throughout the night. Too much Aura to not think of it everytime Grendizer crosses my mind.

Very cool episode. Blaki is suck an ass licker it's hilarious ! The changes about great Vega is very good, in the original is was very disappointing, I like that this one seems have a mystical origins. I'm curious about it's tie with Grendizer and his mystical origins. Speaking of Grendizer, he is indeed very impressive. The fight was nice and he shows that he can win a war on his own, so it makes me curious how things will escalate. I suppose that Zuril will come with new type of more powerful machines. But first, Naida... The original was such a sad episode.

Up to this point, I have some mixed opinions. One of the most important matters is that some people are discussing the possibility that Duke was brainwashed into destroying the Fleed star. Kasado saying he's having visons of Emeror Vega, and there's some eye symbolism when Grendizer goes berserk. I really hope it's not the case: I want Duke to be responsible for his crimes, so that he has a personal reason and duty to protect the Earth. Maybe instead of full brainwashing Vega just made his anger greater. Destroying an entire planet is a but unfortunate for a protagonist we root for, but it's a cartoon, so if he fulfills this mission, that's enough redemption. The character designs are a bit too modern. Seeing the goofy classic villains alongside freaky anime boy Kasado (*HE'S LIKE THE FREAKING JOKER BABY!* 🤡) is jarring. On the other hand, I'm warming up to the mecha designs. I'd like to see other Nagai robots like this. The scene where Kouji mourns to Z really touched me, it shows how much he consider the robot as a brother. 💪🏻😭♥️

This is probably the most monster-esque depiction of Grendizer I've ever seen, reminds me of Evangelion a bit, with the whole berserker gimmick.

Duke states that Grendizer was built by a god (he said “kami-sama” in the official JP dub). That plus Umon’s statement of Fleedians and humans being descendants of the same breed, plus the Dizer Shrine left in Okamijima makes me believe that the Sygma Empire and Raaga (both from Gosaku Ota’s manga adaptation of Grendizer) might be introduced in the show.

There is a new Bandai SMP model kit available but that line is notorious for its low quality so I would skip it.

Hot take here but i felt the script was very cringe in this ep. up to Koji crying for Mazinger. I really liked that scene. It was brutal. Maybe the fansub was the cause?

I grew up watching Grendizer in Arabic from Saudi Arabia in the 80s. Now I am watching your recaps of the reboot from the US. I have to say I don't like the idea of Duke/Grendizer destroying planet Fleed. I hope it is not true!

Ep 2 is more of a back story of how Duke escaped from Planet Fleed and was framed for the murder of his parents. It is pretty interesting that the shrine has the 3 tombstones that resemble the Spacer machines. Maybe they want to give Grendizer more mystical lore instead of just an alien machine robot. Hikaru's introduction is different but I think it is expected of her character to be living on an island all her life and not knowing how to properly interact with outsiders. It was hilarious that she actually has a smartphone that perhaps in Koji's mind was thinking she is not familiar with machines but then they have a TV set on the island as well. Yes, Casado is an asshole that deserves to get Space Thunder and Screw Crusher punch to nothing when Duke gets really pissed off in the next episode.

I found episode 2 amazing, I loved it ! The changes to the previous story makes sense, I like the elements like a group of "knights" piloting mechas that looks similar. Casado is such a piece of s...t ! Naida had one of the best episode in the previous show and for me the most emotional one. I was happy to see her appear so early but shocked by Casado cruelty. She have bandages on her wrist... Hikari is maybe a little bit too different but she look interesting so I will wait before judging. I also love the voice actor for Gandal, he played very cool role in Saint Seiya (Rhadamanthys), Dragon Quest Dai (Vearn) and Attack on Ttan (the beast titan).

In regards to Cassado, given his last name, he might actually be based on "Ensign Whiter" from Episode 24 of the original Grendizer. Granted, they look nothing alike, but I believe he might've still been responsible for killing the king and queen of Planet Fleed (correct me if I'm mistaken). So it might be that they took a one-off character and expanded their role. On that note, between her different appearance and personality, the girl Duke and Koji talk to feels like she's Hikaru in-name-only.

1. Casado’s a f**king gaslighting bastard. To the point of gaslighting Duke into turning Grendizer into a demon. 2. Hikaru (or perhaps the duty of Okamijima Dizer Shrine’s maiden) has… questionable relationship conditions. But, hey. At least she gave us lore that it is destiny for the legendary hero of Planet Earth (Koji) and of Planet Fleed (Duke) to team up. Literally can’t blame destiny for bringing them together. Koji supports Duke whenever he blames and doubts himself. They’re homies. I wonder how will Koji and Duke fulfill the legend. 3. Did you notice that the shapes in those 3 tombstones are that of the Double Spazer, Marine Spazer, and Drill Spazer? Perhaps the Spazers might be part of the lore. 4. Duke Fleed’s Stark Flash references the original Duke Fleed henshin! And I bet that’s not the only reference. Whether it is intentional or not, the Stark Flash might be a reference to Cutie Honey’s Honey Flash. 5. Ngl, the way Zeoladizer looks down at Grendizer feels like Zeoladizer is making fun of of Duke. 6. The title for episode 3 is “Guren no Ikari” (“Crimson Wrath” in English). The title might be a pun as “Guren” sounds the same as saying “Gren” in Japanese. So, the title has another meaning: “Wrath of Gren”. It might refer to Grendizer going berserk once more, or in another case, Duke. Also, Zeoladizer and Aquadizer are named after the middle name of their pilot (like Casado ZEOLA Whiter and Teronna AQUA Vega). This implies that Duke’s full name is “Duke GREN Fleed”. Now Duke and Maria’s names matches. And speaking of Maria, I bet that Maria’s mecha (if she becomes a Starker Knight, hypothetically speaking) might be named “Gracedizer”. LOL.

I wonder how Italy France are translating the -Dizer robots (gren and the enemies shown in ep 2). Because if you call it Goldorak for example, you lose the -Dizer name on all of them. Someone care to share on this topic?
