Thanks for keeping up and reaching out over these many years of absence. I explain myself a little bit here. I'm sorry it took so long.

The Other Half of Intern Year

All the rest of intern year squeezed into one little video. Fine because it was basically more of the same. Also: running my first code.
Update 2 (electric bugaloo): Vascular and Thoracic, halfway through intern year!

Got some time and I'm on a roll- let's do this! Why I hated vascular, why I'm smiling on thoracic. Halfway through my intern year and ready to keep on keepin' on.
Lightning round catch-up: Trauma, Plastics and Ortho.... GO!
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.11 лет назад
I'm a bad blogger! Cliff's notes versions of my trauma, plastics and ortho rotations. Vascular and thoracic to follow (hopefully) in the next week or so. Long story short: LOTS of paperwork, no sleep, I still love trauma and I might have made a mistake not thinking about plastics. Enjoy!
Next Chapter of Residency: Vacation Block
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.12 лет назад
After 4th year, I am SO GOOD at killing vacation time. Drew the short straw and had to take all my vacation now, didn't need it and had no money but I do what I can. Also a sour note on the personal toll of residency.

Enjoyable for the company but a poor choice for elective rotations as it turns out. I do have some ridiculous luck though. I'll update on Cardiology and match week later... definitely NOT within the next few days.
The Early Years: High school and college
Просмотров 7 тыс.12 лет назад
It's actually a bit disturbing how many people want to know what I was doing in high school. The short answer is not much, and the long answer is for the most part none of your business (hahahaha!) College is far more relevant. Enjoy!

Oh, so cool to see this! Thanks for giving an update!! I started watching you back as a 1st year med student I believe and now I'm graduating from a Urological Surgery residency next month. I love that you still have that couch & congrats on all of the success/being happy in general in life. Did you end up doing General Surgery alone or did you do some sort of other (non-plastics) fellowship? Thanks again for the update - very cool!

So cool to hear your update! Seems like a theme among the comments but I watched your videos prior to applying to medicine and now I'm pgy4 in emerg. My daughter was 2 when I started med school so I definitely hear you when you talk about there being a real cost of pursuing this work. Happy to hear you're arriving at a workable life in medicine. 💖

I remember seeing your last video in my last year of high school, being very inspired by you, studying to get into med school. Now I am 6th year medical student in Poland, almost a doctor. And I have the same problems. Always wanted to be a general surgeon, but now seeing how hard it is, I really think about becoming radiologist. Better lifestyle, hours, money, being home on time. Waiting for more videos. Thanks for update.

I am so glad to see you are through the other side of that black hole called Surgery residency. :0) I hate it that your program screwed you out of plastics. I can't imagine having to try and keep up with videos and do a surgical residency. I often wondered how you were doing over the past few years. I was delighted when I got an e-mail saying you posted another video. Happy holidays!

Really glad to see you again doing well. I very much can relate to the overall life cost of training in a demanding program. I did urology for two years until I realized how this has affected my mental and physical well being. So i dropped my program and joined family medicine program. I can confidently say my life had never been better. Again, really happy to see you again doing well.

Wow, I can't believe you're back! I've been periodically checking your channel over the past few years to see if you posted anything (subbed years ago), and was shocked when I saw this. I remember watching your videos when I was in high school, now I'm a first year med student. Your videos, especially the ones about your rotation experiences, definitely impacted my interest in medicine. I'm sorry to hear about your experience with your program. That definitely sounds rough. Thank you for the update and the great content overall!

Hey guys. So I got royally screwed over by my program after this and kinda went into a tailspin. It was ugly, and nobody needs that kind of toxicity, particularly if you're chasing a dream. So I kinda quarantined myself. I'm on research this year, getting my head clear, and I should be back in the next couple weeks. Thanks for your continued interest and support, it actually means a lot to me. Wishing everybody the best.

This student appears to have a poor understanding of the full scope and complexities of the profession of psychiatry, but that is likely due to limitations of her particular medical school and/or the limitations of inpatient psychiatry in an academic/teaching hospital. It's also somewhat inevitable in a 4-6 week clerkship rotation. The vast majority of psychiatrists don't do inpatient psychiatry, and those who do, don't do it in academic settings like the one she described. Due to lack of parity for mental health coverage, most psychiatrists are in cash-only, or similar, outpatient private practices, especially in pediatric psychiatry, and they do their own psychotherapy. Most of them are off the grid, so-to-speak, and therefore enjoy a high level of autonomy. What this student describes is the tip of the iceberg, only one little corner of psychiatry, and only at her particular teaching hospital.

Most med students should be modeling or acting which is really hard to get in to so they choose med school = $$$$$$$ Some Med students, nursing etc... are the most snobbish, humane-less low lives I have ever encountered, but it is difficult to filter people out as they lie their way through interviews. Of course they all want to be a surgeon. I wonder why. $$$$$$$$$$$= ultimate motive. The attitude most of them flow by is F**K the patients and cut them like a chicken so they can retire 20 years from now and take that nice vacation. Very sad to see.
