Terran 1, yep. Unquestionably. When I first started playing at age 9, I could hear it in my sleep as I dreamt about replaying the first two missions. That said, I've taken a keen enjoyment of Terran 4. It's from Brood War and is closely associated with the UED.

To be honest I don't think anything tops the PSX opening sound. And that's fascinating to learn that it's "performed" live by the machine. Weirdly, it always felt like that, somehow. Do you think the difference is detectable, if only subconsciously?

A great example of another game with an SFX direction like you talk about are the Frostpunk games. The “citizens died” sound alone works so well on so many levels.

Wow now this was interesting! The PS1 and PS2 start up sounds are so mesmerizing. I always loved how magical and mystical they sounded which I feel was all part of the PS1 and PS2 success because they were infectious. Before playing any game I would look forward to hearing those sounds. This makes me so happy that I still have a PS2! Thank you for explaining why I loved this song so much. The whole team was amazing. Seriously, a lot of OG classics were true works of art on a level different from what we have now. While there are some real gems out there in between, few compare to stuff like this.
