Sharpness Test of CPM 20cv and M390 Sharpened with Ceramics
Просмотров 23 тыс.7 лет назад
Hello, this is a demonstration of edge sharpness of high end steels achieved with ceramic sharpeners. I have seen it repeated many times that a person "needs diamond sharpeners to sharpen high end powder steels" such as s30 and m390 and 20cv. I find that statement to be false. I have maintained and sharpened my knives with ceramics for years in s30v, s35vn, 20cv, m390, s90v, vg10 and have never...

Razor fine edge retention test with Sandvik 14c28n on the Kershaw Leek. I pitted the 14c28n against the m390 of the Benchmade Valet. The test was cutting 3 inch strips of cardboard until the knife could no longer slice clean through the paper towel. The cardboard was sourced from one large clothes dryer box. Each performed how I thought it would but the end result came out different than I had ...
RAZOR FINE EDGE RETENTION: m390 and Sandvik 14c28n Conclusion 3 of 3

Hello, this is the conclusion to my "razor fine edge retention test". In this video i tested the Kershaw Leek and the Benchmade Valet to see which one would hold the "razor fine edge" the longest. Each cut was through 3 inches of cardboard taken from one large box. I cut until the knife couldn't slice paper towel reliably. I assumed the leek would easily defeat the valet because of its razor st...

Did you sharpen the blade for the video? Mine came out of the box dull. Could not smoothly slice through paper.

Hi Excellent demo, much appreciated. I know this video is 6 years old so not expecting a response but nevertheless, I’m a novice and want to buy my first stone to sharpen my mora knives. Someone recommended the DC4 but I’ve read mixed reviews on that. Are you familiar with it and would this double stuff be better than the DC4? Also, if I was to just purchase this stone, would it be sufficient for the time being just to get started? Thanks

I found your video to be the best one for my needs . I’m new to the knife scene and wasn’t sure what to look for on a good knife so the explanation of thin blade vs thick helped narrow my search. I also really appreciated to see the reviewed knife ACTUALLY cutting …. Most of the videos I’ve seen don’t even show the knives in action keep up the good work

Hey, thanks for your review. I just got one of these and I was thinking to replace the clip with one of those split arrow clips . I’ve got one on a mini grip and I’ve always liked the way it looks with that clip. But after what you said about the bigger spoon clip, I’m going to leave that on there. I’m sure it will wear well with age maybe having that bit more of surface area will you better in the pocket retention and getting it out. I also don’t really understand the fascination with the deep clips. I like to have a good knife so that I can have something to grasp. Also, I don’t like how the pants pocket grabs on the screw heads with those deep carry clips.

How about a 5yr review? I agree with everything you said. Even about the standard clip. I use the OG 940 with s30v, which has proven to be one of my favorite steels besides K390 Delica. I've had mine for about 22yrs total. Well, I lost my first one, but I'm sure I'd still be using it daily if I didn't.

I am right handed and have always carried my pocket knife in my front left pocket. I don't know who carries there knife in the same side as there Dominant hand. If its ever an emergency I'm using my dominant hand to either fend someone off while my non dominant hand goes for my knife or in a car accident I'm using my dominant hand for escape while my non dominant hand can go for my knife to cut my seat belt or what not. I would never carry in my dominant pocket. If you take your clip of you can change the retention on the clip so whoever says it dosnt have good retention needs to work for a living and do things themselves. Just saying

My 2 cents- buy some ceramic rods and get the edge back with them. Can be done quickly and they take up alot less space with the benefit of sharpening more blade profiles. I even would recommend buying a diamond rod like lansky uses with their crock sticks when you need to put on a brand new edge if you have a recurve in hard steel. Ceramics have been my favorite sharpeners for a while now and have really saved my blades along with decades of experience and lessons learned. Hone/maintain an edge after several uses and only really sharpen when absolutely necessary. Had I had that mentality 30 yrs ago some of my favorite no longer available knives would still have most of their original shape. Not saying rods are the only thing to own cause I have many stones just saying it might be more convenient and fast for others like it is me. My favorite sharpeners are a synthetic (carborundum) stone that came with a smith's set 20+ yrs ago and a piece of ceramic that belonged to my father in law before he passed yrs ago. I have no idea what the ceramic rod was used on/in but I have found no other it's equal and I own many.

Id venture to say the reason why you can get it sharper on the diamond is because it can actually shape the carbides that are implanted or placed throughout the steel. I love the ceramics in my collection and use them more than anything else these days but on some of these super steels I feel like it's probably better to touch up an edge with a fine diamond and then LIGHTLY with a ceramic or ruby. Or atleast every other honing so the carbides are for sure being shaped with the edge. People can go down a rabbit hole debating fall out, hardness, steels, blah blah blah but imo this approach gives you a reasonable peace of mind. I myself am not a fan of diamonds but I am an old school soul who loves stones and ceramics but after 30 yrs of sharpening even I had to break down and buy some diamonds to feel confident when dealing with modern steels.

Have had and used this knife for years. Bought it because of the type of blade style. Bought to use as EDC and utility knife on my Alpaca ranch. Great for getting into tight areas, cutting rope knots, bindings, hoses, tubes, feed binding etc. Plus having an almost scalpel sharp tip to use to lance boils and work on injuries is a great plus. I have one of the first models and my belt clip is about 1/3 inch shorter than the one shown in the video. NO issues with tension or the knife coming out of my front pocket. Had to replace the tension bar once in the 10+ years I have owned the knife. Does keep a very sharp edge for a long time and through a lot of use. I have other knives and tools for harder use but for daily ranch use and EDC it is great. Needed a knife with a sharp point that I could open and close one handed.

I literally hate this knife. I sent this knife in for resharpening and they sent it back with a horrible bevel. I tried to sharpen it to hair popping sharp and I couldn't get it sharp at all. I suspect the heat treat is iffy or something. I've heard of other people say this also.

Love the Leek and I have several. Great EDC knife. My biggest complaint is the clip will easily bend if you catch it on something while in your pocket. The pocket exposure is larger than other similar size knives and that creates a lever of sorts due to the clip location. The good news is Kershaw will send free replacement parts but it's a hassle and an ongoing problem.

Wtf? This knife is definitely designed to carry in your front right pocket. How the heck are you pulling it out of your pocket lol?? It comes perfect for that from the factory before you fucked it up and swapped the clip and made it stick out so much. All you have to do is stick your damn thumb in your pocket, pull up, rotate it slightly and open it with your index finger.
