    I was trying to use the cable loss on my Rig Expert XPro with a dummy load and it was giving me a DB loss twice that the manufacturer was reporting. I completely forgot I could use my SW-102 and my radio to get the watt meter measurements without the coax cable to get the initial measurement, then connect the watt meter between long coax and the dummy load to get the new measurement. After plugging in the two measurements, I got a value that was close to what the manufacturer was stating (was a little over, but the VSWR meter isn't that accurate and I am having to use adapters which would have added additional loss).

    • @survivalcomms
      @survivalcomms 5 дней назад

      When doing a single port cable loss measurement typically the end of the cable being measured is terminated with an open at the far end ( Anritsu etc. - not sure about the rig expert ). Try to repeat the test with it open and see if the results are similar to the specification. Thanks for watching !

    I received 3 from a UK supplier and tested one of them with SURECOM SW-33. It seemed ok on UHF but 'horrendous' on VHF. So I googled and found Your video and boom You confirm that my SWR metre isn't defective :-) I got 3 of them at around £4 each, so no great loss I might just go ahead and tear one apart like You did ... for the parts. Visually the colour of the writing on the sides of your antenna are different, 'mine,' matches that of your fake one, so that's also a good visual test. Later: I tried to rip the top cap off but this one used 'stronger glue' :-)

    ⚠️ IMPORTANT REQUEST…. Can you *PLEASE* produce a similar video as an emergency / alternative / field-expedient method of terminating “Heliax” / hardline type cable… *WITHOUT* the use of specialized tools. A friend who lives in Californistan and works in the public safety comms world, has been relating the challenges being experienced in the currently ongoing wildfire tragedy. (2025 L.A. Wildfires for future viewers) He was tasked with expediently moving a large amount of threatened equipment as well as deploying tactical repeaters. The problem(s)? Too many to list, starting with the Low-IQ DEI governing and leadership. 😡 BUT…

    • @PowderMill
      @PowderMill 25 дней назад

      One of the greatest difficulties is the lack of tools and equipment, and if equipment IS available, transporting equipment and manpower is a huge challenge. “Specialized” tools and even test gear will likely not be available for an extended period of time, so “alternative” and unorthodox methods are the way to go for now. The Heliax prep/stripping devices he’s come to rely on and use daily were lost, along with the majority of hand tools and small power tools. He reminded me of our early days as “cheap hams” before we entered the field. We’d bring a case of ice cold beer over to cell site installations in the area. (Always at the END of the work day! ETOH + Towers = Death)🤫 The refreshments and a bit of cash would usually result in us loading up our trucks with excess cable and parts. Back then, before the internet was ubiquitous, we’d have to figure out how to accomplish tasks by learning from the “Elmers” of our amateur radio club and experimenting. He is currently very happy to have retained many of those skills! Making use of general purpose type tools that (hopefully) can be acquired during an emergency or disaster, things like hacksaws/blades, utility knives/razor blades, etc…. will keep you communicating.

    • @PowderMill
      @PowderMill 25 дней назад

      Some tips / ideas / experiences from a few “old school” radio guys (+ one who’s currently working the massive wildfire in the Los Angeles area. - When brushing the prepped Heliax center conductor (or any of the internals of the connector), please NEVER use a dirty/contaminated/steel brush. I once used a welder’s filthy old wire brush for dressing a huge number of 7/8” cable/connectors at a high RF density and very packed site. After PIM and odd problems suddenly appeared and RF engineers spent days evaluating, I was scolded and schooled AND had to spend days cleaning everything up. Tower climbing was also required ($$ !) as I had pre-terminated everything on the ground and “bagged” each end. Good tip = My boss used to carry tiny 8mil plastic bags to protect connectors during work and for any “spare” cables left behind. Just don’t leave on if left outdoors, water will always find a way in.

      Sorry for the length of all of this,.. A bunch of us were on a conference call as I was typing this and figured someone might benefit from some tips. Not really a tip, but from our buddy in Cali: “While VHF (2m for hams) has its place for the more rural areas, handling duplexers and cavities makes you really appreciate the smaller size/weight of UHF and 700/800MHz equipment.” “We even have some VHF Low-Band (freq range in use = 38-48MHz) duplexers in service for OEM and CHP interop. They are the size and weight of huge 6’ tall oxygen tanks and there are a quite a few per repeater. Combiners/multi-couplers and engineered antenna systems are less common with the lower freqs, making relocating easier.” “I always carry a few ‘mobile’ notch type duplexers in the truck for field-expedient emergency situations. UHF / UHF T-Band / VHF High-Band / 700 800 900 MHz, with more UHF & VHF than the others because UHF works well and VHF is the majority of what the fire service uses out here. I can tune up a notch duplexer in under 10min and they are tiny enough that I can carry a dozen or more without using much space.” “The untuned ‘mobile’ duplexers really saved the day yesterday. While I’d never use one on an important project or system and always keep power at half of the 50w rating, they get you up and running in a pinch.” “Most ‘hams’ and GMRS folk are being sold absolute junk, actually “tuned“ in China, some supposedly tuned for use on any GMRS frequency pair , and wonder why their repeaters work the way they work.” “There’s a reason they’re called mobile duplexers, and I have learned from the radio techs working back when Johnny & Roy and EMERGENCY! We’re on TV. When MICU paramedics began operating, cell phones did not exist. There were/are 10 UHF “med channels” used. The hospital ER had entire work areas set up with tone or DC remote(s), used to control their rooftop radio equipment. The firefighter/paramedics would carry a /\/\otorola Apcor radio onboard their truck. It used the onboard gear to relay from their 1-2w Apcor to the hospital ER. They could plug their LifePak cardiac monitors/defib boxes right into the Apcor , enabling them to speak to their medical control doc and send EKG telemetry right to the ER.”

I've seen videos of them posted on YT and they often showed a better job knocking down the background noise than the internal DSP. So far I'm a little disappointed with it. Some of the things that are coming out with AI based DSP's are insane. Apache Labs ANAN G2 is simply amazing. There are also a few videos here on YT of folks using Thetis for NR and they are just nuts, compared to what Icom, Yaesu, and Kenwood offer in their product lineup.

I had a truck that drove me nuts - pulled the fuses one by one until I found it - a pinched wire in the truck bed. It only discharged the battery during rainstorms. Maddening!

      @survivalcomms Месяц назад

      3 hundredths of an amp in this case should last 90 days of storage not taking self discharge into account . A lead acid battery in Florida heat can self discharge 15 - 20 percent capacity on average sitting on a shelf which is 2 hundredths of an amp if my math is right. I need to drive the vehicle more often :) Thanks for watching !

      23 mils won't drain it in 2 weeks. Most cars have closer to 75 mils and even that isn't a problem in 2 weeks. If you leave it 3 to 4 weeks just plug in a small solar trickle charger to the car via a tap in the interior fuse panel.

    Listen to what he has to say in this video, the correct punch to get is the chassis punch and NOT the conduit punch. TY for the info SurvivalComms Learn from my mistake Lesson learned, when purchasing a 3/4" Greenlee punch the most common result is the 3/4" conduit punch. Which is FAR too large for an NMO installation.

    • @survivalcomms
      @survivalcomms Месяц назад

      Yes it is the chassis punch . It makes the cleanest hole for an NMO mount by far. The purpose built " antenna " hole saws antenna are a jagged mess by comparison. Thanks for watching !

      @@survivalcomms In order to fix this mistake, a fellow turned me onto a company called Breed Love. They make NMO mounts with very large bases, and ship with a thick rubber gasket for the top side. Worked like a champ, and the price was reasonable.

      @@viewatyourownrisk Thanks for the info . I was checking them out and those would be ideal for those torn out NMO bases from impacts. Decades ago I put a hurst shifter in my car and cut an enormous opening in my floor board. I told the dude at the speed shop I needed a big shifter boot and he handed me one across the counter the size of a maxtrac and said " big boot for big problems " Thanks for sharing the info !
