Hiking footage around Colorado and beyond
Twin Sisters Peak via Forsythe Canyon TH, Roosevelt National Forest, Colorado
The Twin Sisters Peak, elevation 8738', is located about half way between Boulder and Nederland in the Roosevelt National Forest. Unlike its more famous namesake in RMNP, this peak sees very few visitors. I hiked it a day after a major snow storm that dumped 1-2ft of snow in this area, and had to break trail on the approach to the summit. The summit was well worth the effort though, with unobstructed view of the Front Range to the west, and all the popular peaks near Boulder to the east. Total stats from Forsythe Canyon TH: 5.5 miles with 1100ft elevation gain

Willow Lakes, Eagles Nest Wilderness, Gore Range, Colorado

My solo hike to the beautiful Willow Lakes in the Gore Range near Silverthorne, Colorado. I was breaking trail in ankle deep snow after first 2 miles. The lakes were frozen but the ice was not thick enough to walk on yet. Also checked out Salmon Lake on my way back. Total stats: 14 miles with 3100’ elevation gain. It’s my first time hiking in the Gore Range and I’ll definitely be back in the fu...
Fletcher Mountain and Quandary Peak West Ridge, Tenmile Range, Colorado

My solo climb of both centennial 13er Fletcher Mountain (13,958') and 14er Quandary Peak (14,272') via the west ridge. Starting from Lower Blue Lake TH, the route up to Fletcher summit was mostly class 2 talus hopping. Even though recent snow made the routing finding a bit more challenging, the climb was largely straightforward. I had the summit of Fletcher to myself and really enjoyed the view...

A short video of our visit to Chasm Lake on 10/20/2024. This is a classic hike in the Rocky Mountain NP and can be done year around. The trail was completely dry top to bottom on this day. We started after 10am and were back at parking lot by 3pm, with 40 min break at the lake. Jones Pass and Mount Nystrom, Arapaho National Forest, Colorado

I drove to the top of Jones Pass in my stock SUV, then hiked a little over 3 miles along the Continental Divide to the remote summit of Mt Nystrom, elev 12,652'. The dirt road to Jones Pass is relatively smooth and high clearance vehicle is not required but 4WD/AWD is recommended due to the grade. The entire hike stays above 12,000'. The view along the Divide is fantastic and well worth the mod...
Pacific Peak West Ridge, Pacific Tarn, Atlantic Peak, Mayflower Gulch TH, Tenmile Range, Colorado

My solo climb of Pacific Peak via its class 3 west ridge, and subsequent traverse to Pacific Tarn and Atlantic Peak. Both Pacific and Atlantic Peak are centennial 13ers (top 100 tallest peaks in CO), with Pacific Peak just shy of 14er status at 13,957’. The west ridge of Pacific Peak has a few exposed class 3 challenges amid loose rocks. I found it to be a tad more difficult than the Kelso Ridg...
San Luis Peak, La Garita Wilderness, San Juan Mountains, Colorado

San Luis Peak is a 14er located in the remote La Garita Wilderness, about 10 miles north of the town of Creede, CO. The standard Stewart Creek TH requires nearly 30 miles of dirt road driving to get to. As a result it is one of the least visited CO 14ers and great for anyone looking for solitude. The 5 mile approach along Stewart Creek drainage is long but relatively flat. The last 2 miles is s...

My solo climb of Mt Alice via the Hourglass Ridge with descent via Boulder-Grand Pass in Rocky Mountain National Park. Starting from Wild Basin TH, the first 6 miles of the hike was in dense forest with not much to see. The views opened up drastically after Lion Lake #1, and the next 7 miles was filled with off-trail scramble and some route finding challenges. The Hourglass Ridge and the north ...

While visiting our children in the Bay Area, we hiked one of the local favorite trails near Mount Tam about 30min north of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Dipsea-Steep Ravine-Matt Davis Loop, starting from Stinson Beach TH. This area is very lush with a variety of plants including the giant redwood trees, and the trails are well maintained and quite enjoyable. Total stats: 7.5 miles with 1700ft ele...
Crestone Peak via Cottonwood Creek, Sangre de Cristo Range, Colorado

My solo climb of Crestone Peak from west side via Cottonwood Creek drainage. This is not a maintained trail, and one needs to be experienced in route finding and class 3 scramble to enjoy this route. However it is quite beautiful and secluded, and I’d highly recommend this route especially in the fall when the leaves are changing and there are no mosquitoes. Total stats: 12 miles with 5800’ ele...

We climbed 14ers Blanca Peak and Ellingwood Point on 9/8/2024, a day after we summited Little Bear Peak from the same camp spot near Lake Como. Compared to Little Bear this hike was much more mellow, and can be kept mostly at class2 , with a couple of minor class3 moves during the traverse from Blanca to Ellingwood (which can be avoided if one drops lower from the ridge). We watched an epic sun...
Little Bear Peak via the Hourglass Gully, Sangre de Cristo Range, Colorado

We climbed Little Bear Peak via the standard class 4 route on 9/7/2024. We hiked 5 miles, 3300’ up the extremely rough Lake Como Road the day before to set up camp near the lake. The next morning we set out to climb Little Bear Peak around 6:30am. We timed our climb almost perfectly as we were able to avoid other climbers for the most part. Dragon’s Tail Couloir Snow Climb, Rocky Mountain National Park
Looks awesome!! When did you go?
Last February
That's a beautiful day hike and a long one in miles. I hope to hike it one day. I've only hiked Pitkin Lake in the Eagles Nest Wilderness, last summer. I was hoping to see a Mountain Goat, I've never seen one, but none were around that day. I know Colorado got hammered the following day of your hike, with feet of snow and now another big storm today. It's messing up my hiking opportunities. Great video as always.
The high country is pretty snowed in by now. I’m moving to lower elevations, and plan to do more backcountry skiing this winter as well. Always appreciate your support Vickie and have a great Thanksgiving
@@ruggedland I don't think I'm going to have many hikes or videos in the coming months to publish. I have six videos from this year that I will release when I can't hike. I can't believe how fast winter arrived this year. I was able to hike in 2023 all the way until February 1 this year. I hit a trail in the Thompson Canyon that is steep but short when I can't get out in the high country. Not video worthy though but a great workout. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family too.
I remember backpacking in to these Willow Lakes with two friends in the summer of 1976. We felt so good coming out that we wished the trail was longer. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Mark for sharing your story. I look forward to going back to this area during summer
Been a while since I’ve been up there. I think Zodiac Ridge is one of the prettiest backdrops you could wish for for an alpine lake.
Totally agree. I had the whole place to myself for nearly an hr and really enjoyed the view. Plan to hit some of those jagged peaks next summer. Thanks for watching/commenting
I miss this place already, keep up the videos mate!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
This was quite the climb, full of extremely steep rocky exposure with snow and ice to spice it up.. I don't know how you got across that one portion? I kept thinking, I hope you don't have to return the same route. I'm glad you had an easier descent. Beautiful views of the peaks and lakes below.
Thanks very much Vickie. I took a direct line from the summit down to the lake that drops nearly 2500ft in less than a mile. It was loose talus slope and took me well over 1hr, but still probably faster than taking the standard east ridge down and 2 miles of road walking back to car
Wow; quite an adventure! I thought of the old sayings "We're almost there," "It's just ahead," and "I think that's the summit."
Thanks Mark. This may be my last outing above 13K’ till next Spring as winter has settled in finally in the high country
It speaks highly of you that you take the difficult route instead of the easy route. But I suspect when you are my age you will be taking the easiest routes.
Thanks. As an empty-nester for a number of years now, I’m not young anymore. Thankful I can still do the harder stuff today and will try to enjoy it till I can no longer do it safely
Incredible landscapes! Your video really captures the beauty of these scenes. Thanks for sharing such amazing content! 👍13
Thank you
About 40 years ago a brother and I climbed Longs twice. I never went to Chasm Lake. Thanks for this video.
Thanks for sharing your story Mark. A lot has changed since then I imagine
@@ruggedland I moved to Wisconsin 42 years ago. I hiked with a different brother when I visited Colorado each late summer (to 2014), but not from the Longs Peak trailhead. Your videos and those of others are great for taking me back into the mountains.
Great hike. Beautiful scenery.
Thank you!
Nice video. Been up there before but didn't get a chance to hike the CDT trail. Thought but heading to the bottom of the otherside but didn't go.
Thank you. It’s a fun area for hiking in summer and skiing in winter. One can also access Pettingell Peak from the Pass by heading south along the ridge
Thanks for the video. Earlier this year I made it up to Chasm Junction before turning around. That's my limit. It's a great view from Chasm Junction but it would be cool to be right there at the diamond face of Long's Peak.
@@dr.nigelcool3771 thanks for the comments. Chasm Lake is a solid hike and can be tricky to navigate in a few spots. The view at the Junction is pretty awesome too with closeup view of both Meeker and Longs
A nice day for a hike together and no wind too. Beautiful!!!
Thanks Vickie!
Nice high country video shots
Thank you very much!
thanks for your hiking to phantastic mountain landscape. Iam a 71 years old german man who loves nature, but my health doesn t allow such walking. Fine reporting without permanent selfies in front. And - no critics - a nice jump in the near future according ton your description. let s have a good future up to the 27. July 2027
Thank you Sir for the nice comments. I try to put focus on nature instead of myself in all my videos. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching
Very helpful, this information looks like it took some digging to figure out. My editing software allows me to send my finished video to a file first before up loading. I have had one disappear, so now I can put it back with your helpful video. I finally figured out how to watch my unpublished, private videos, on my TV before I make them public. I really can't see the finished video completely from just watching it on my computer. Ever since I discovered how to do it, I started re-editing those unpublished videos and re-uploading them. I'm much happier with the results. There was nothing more nerve racking than having to wait until Friday to watch a new video on my TV. Let me know if you would like to know how to do this, if you already don't know how.
Thanks Vickie. I was under the impression I could download my original videos from RUclips Studio so I didn’t save any of my original videos until very recently when I realized that it only gave me 720p version. I was glad to find out this method after a little bit of digging. I know how to watch my private videos on TV and like you I also do some final checking before publishing but mostly on my computer
Does look like you picked a very nice relatively light wind day. Not easy to do at that elevation. Amazing views!
Thanks Mike! It was a pleasant walk for sure
Hey ruggedland, a very impressive , high country solo trek, good for you. Great video shots.
@@allenfritschel1859 thank you. It was a good bang for the buck hike. Soon one has to snowshoe/ski up to the pass
Very pretty and peaceful hike along a ridgeline. Love the drone footage too.
Thanks for the support Vickie. Glad you enjoyed it
Very intense!
Definitely challenging but it’s a fantastic summit! Thanks for watching
4:13 Thank you! Very professionally done. Videos like this are so much better in the age of drones. I tried to do this about ten years ago but was turned back by extremely intense winds. I barely made it past Bobtail BM. What day of the year did you do this?
Thank you. The video was taken on Oct 19. It was a relatively calm day and I was glad to be able to fly the drone a bit. Love that whole area. Appreciate your comments
Soon(ish) to be good skiing!
Indeed. The mountains are getting some good snow this week. Thanks for watching
Great video! Amazing footage! You really captured the rugged beauty of the mountain but also the difficulty of the climb. It was great to meet you that day! - Bob Hiking 121. 🙂
@@hiking1213 pleasure to meet you too Bob. Happy trails!
Looks like a ton of fun!! MUCH better than the "tourist" route!!
Yup. Didn’t see a single person until the summit
@ruggedland how it SHOULD be!!
Hey, I’m a tourist!
@pw2883 everyone has to start SOMEWHERE!!
You guys do very nice hiking videos
Thanks you!
This was a strenuous, high country scramble, congratulations. The hike/drone video were excellent, truely the "top of the world". Well done. One does get a sense of our solidarity.
@@allenfritschel1859 thank you for your kind words. Having lived here since 1993 and the mountains are my sanctuary
Oooh... I really want to do this hike. Looks so fun. Great shots! What drone are you using? The brand I purchased is no longer updating their software to work with smartphones, and my older model isn't supported by their all-in-one remote. Thank you!
@@BASEguy955 I’m using an old DJI mini 2 that I bought a few years ago. I’ll likely upgrade to mini 3 or 4 pro soon. Costco has a good bundle for both sans the RC2 controller which I can probably live without. Thanks for watching
Quite an amazing hand-over-hand rugged ascent of Pacific Peak. Interesting Pacific Tarn. Fine drone video. Thanks!
Thanks Mark! Love the scramble at Tenmile Range peaks
That was quite the ridge climb up to Pacific Peak, especially the area you had to lower yourself down onto such a small ledge. Pacific Tarn is amazing! Loved the drone footage in your video too. Great filming and video.
Thanks Vickie. The west ridge of Pacific Peak was a fun scramble for me. The other way to summit (and to see the Tarn), is via McCullough Gulch TH which is what Bob took. It is a much longer approach but can be kept under class 3. Thanks for watching
Thank you for showing the road in, and the surrounding peaks. I have only done Sneffles, but San Luis, Wetterhorn and Umcompaghre are all on my list. I am considering moving to Montrose as well.
The dirt road to the TH is pretty smooth. Only challenge is the second water crossing that requires some clearance. Those are all great peaks. Hard to go wrong with any mountain in the San Juans. Thanks for watching
Beautiful...
Thank you! Cheers!
Autumn weather seems to give clearer air and better views from the summit compared to summer. Thanks for the video.
Fall is a great time to hike these peaks. No threat of T storms and no bugs either, and the colors are amazing too. Thanks for watching
Enjoyed the video. Thanks for the share!
Thank you 🙏
@@ruggedland ❤️❤️❤️
Other than the wind, it looked like a perfect day. You both had the mountain and views all to yourselves, that's pretty special. Great night photos too. What will you be doing outdoors in the coming months?
Hi Vickie. Thanks for commenting. The La Garita range is quite remote and for that reason one can have lots of solitude. Will go back to hike more for sure. In colder months I’d keep hiking in lower elevations along the foothills. A couple of state parks I enjoy are Staunton and Golden Gate Canyon. Once snow is consolidated in late Spring I plan to do a few more snow climbs as well
Great video!! Views are spectacular!!
Thank you. One of my better hikes this year
Nice video 👍🙂
Thank you 🙏
An interesting autumn pre-winter ascent in a color-changed environment. Nice photo of the accomplished hikers at the top. Good drone footage outside the Wilderness. Fabulous night sky. Did I hear a little "nowhere man" in the music? Thanks for the video!
Thanks Mark. Appreciate your comments. I always credit the music artists in the description of each video
You got to love those sparsely populated hikes. Looks like a mentally relaxing hike.
Yes sir. I enjoy hiking in solitude very much. Thanks for watching
Great that you have a wife who enjoys the outdoors and is capable of doing these challenging hikes.
Thanks PW. I appreciate the opportunities when she is willing to go out with me :)
I think she was trying to leave him when she was running down the trail. Hopefully he got back to the trailhead first. :)
A beautiful September climb. Great views. Many years ago we camped at Thunder Lake. Interesting that the patrol cabin is still there. I have a calendar photo of Mount Alice on my wall here in Wisconsin. Thanks for taking us up to the top via the interesting Hourglass Ridge.
Thanks Mark. Always appreciate your comments. Mt Alice has been on my list for a while and glad to have finally done it. Very enjoyable loop through the heart of Wild Basin
That was one rugged solo hike, haven't been above lion lakes, and that's a push. Great videos and congrats, very enjoyable
Thanks 🙏 Glad you enjoyed it
Very nice video with amazing views of the Wild Basin area ... Maybe someday I'll summit Mt. Alice ... But if I do I'll opt for the route that goes up/down via Boulder Pass ... Thanks for sharng your adventure with us ...
Alice is a great summit with views of the basin and so many nearby 13ers. Ascending Boulder-Grand pass works too. It is somewhat loose but relatively short. Hope you can get it. Thanks for watching!
To this day, this is still my favorite route to hike in the Wild Basin section of the RMNP. Mount Alice via the Hourglass Ridge is a long day, but very worth the trek. Awesome footage.
@@MoodyPeaks it’s my new favorite in the Wild Basin as well. So much variety of scenery. 18 miles seemed to go very quickly. Thanks for watching
Great hike, beautiful fall day for it with the aspens. I wish I had the youth and stamina for these hikes, but I'll just have to watch you do them. Thanks a lot for the video!
Appreciate your comments and thanks for the support
Wow what a beautiful video. We've hiked all the way to Snowbank Lake on backpacking trip two years ago. Thanks for showing the traverse across Hourglass Ridge. Such long drops in this short but exposed area. So many amazing views from Mount Alice too. I was so happy to see Lake of Many Winds. I was going to hike it for the first time the day I hiked to Bluebird Lake, but I thought otherwise because I didn't want to film it with such low water. (That is what I assumed it would look like). I saw Flacon Lake in your ending slide show. I've hiked to it before. Beautiful photos and film of your very long hike and climb.
Thanks Vickie. Alice has been on my list for a while, glad to finally do it this fall. It’s my first time visiting all these lakes too, and I enjoyed them all, especially Lion Lake #2. I also really enjoyed the valley between Thunder Lake and Lake of Many Winds. Very serene and beautiful with fall colors. Did Pacific Peak Saturday and also visited Pacific Tarn. Great trip. Video coming in two weeks
@@ruggedland Oh, I'm so excited to see your hike-climb to Pacific Peak and Tarn. The highest named body of water in the US.
Hi Jun! Nice video. I’ve been thinking about giving this another try this coming winter. It was great to meet you yesterday! I’m sorry I didn’t meet up with you at the Mayflower Gulch trailhead. I should have communicated with you better. Maybe another time we can meet up for a climb.
It was nice meeting you yesterday Bob. No worry at all about choosing a different route. I was thinking about the Mohawk Lakes route to get up to Pacific too but the west ridge looks too intriguing to pass up. Atlantic west ridge is a worthy winter route. Relatively safe but can be challenging depending on snow condition. Like the idea of a future climb together, maybe a bit closer to home like RMNP
@@ruggedland that would be fine. I was also thinking that if you ever wanted to climb one of the tougher 14ers again, I wouldn’t mind an experienced guide. 😁 But only if it’s a climb you had a desire to do again. Some of those climbs in the Elk Mountains have me a little concerned. 😬
I have Snowmass and N Maroon left in the Elk. Plan to do a snow climb with some friends on Snowmass next year but I may need a partner for N Maroon if you are interested
@@ruggedland I’ve done a little bit of class 4, but not a class 4 14er yet. I wonder, would North Maroon be a good intro peak into class 4? Or should I do another class 4 first? I was thinking about doing Crestone Needle next year as my into class 4 climb. But maybe I’m over thinking this.
@@hiking1213 I think the Needle (East Gully) would be a better choice for your first C4. The rock is much more solid compared to anything in the Elk
Absolutely beautiful! You hiked through a mystical magical forest. The fog added to the mood too.
Thanks Vickie, glad you enjoyed it, as we certainly did. Back to the Rocky next week
Would you recommend this for a beginner?
Yes if it’s free of snow/ice. The summit block involves some scrambling but you can skip that if you are not comfortable and still get a great workout and views towards the west. Might take you multiple hours but doable for most
@ruggedland I see thank you!
