Shure SM7b vs Chainsaw - AI Vocal Extraction
Chainsaw loud. Voice quiet. Man sad. Can lalal.ai decide the winner? I put my trusty 49cc chainsaw up against my similarly trusty Shure SM7b microphone to see if the stem extractor can reduce the noise and save my dialogue.

Sound Design a Futuristic Vehicle with Battery (or any other sampler)
Hi Thom, do you know where i can find sound theory about static vs dynamic bg? ( Its for my thesis 🙏🏻)
Awesome video, Tom! Although it depends on the project, my personal preference is to have the VOs be recorded during the sound design rather than being pre-packaged in the AAF because typically, it's the sound designer's job to not only edit voice overs, but also record them too. Sometimes, it's not the same actor as the character, but it can be an actual voice actor doing some offscreen roles.
the only problem with using AI to extract speech is that it only works well on english
Sometimes it’s best and sometimes it’s worst. Super clean 😢
can you make a video about mixing LR to LCR
I found a track called TEN99 by Suede Jury on bandcamp. That's pretty good too, on a high-end system.
I can't find P.T.C. by Ten99 anywhere online. It must be very 'underground'.
This hip hop translates really well on a high-end system. On a cheap radio it would sound 'meh'.
You ain't gotta like it cause the nerds gonna love it
If ever somebody was using a chainsaw in Abbey Road Studios this software would be perfect.
I like how at 24:25 the session talks to you directly.
Great video. Thanks. Very useful. Bought my sm7b yesterday. Subscribed.
This is the wildest shure sm7b video, that I've ever seen.
Thank you so much Thomas. I am learning a ton from these videos. I am primarily a Production Sound Mixer but often get request from indie filmmakers to do rerecording mixing. Up until now I have said no because I didn't feel right charging people with my limited experience. These courses are not only helping me with the rerecording aspect they are making me a better Production Sound Mixer.
Glad to help
After 2:20 is just blank, maybe there was a mistake when exporting the video?
Fixed it thanks!
Remarkable! I am really enjoying Clear at the moment, but this is pretty good. Thanks Thomas.
Thanks for the stream! I would benefit from a more in depth look at automation in mixing. Difference between write to selection and write to all enabled for instance, and when to use one over the other. Also when i copy and paste automation i cant always tell what exactly is being copied and pasted and i feel like im might be blowing out automation that i didnt want to. Just an idea for a stream thanks again! Oh one other thing when you group clips together (like you did with the gun shots, great tip btw) if you ungroup them will they dissapear from the clip list? Im guessing if you were to send to a mixer that they would probably prefer them ungrouped but not 100 sure here Thanks!
Thanks for the ideas
I jumped in the stream super late and missed the whole point of today being a Pro Tools pro-tip stream… 😅 Apologies for that Thomas and thank you again for talking with me and bringing on some member guests. You rock and so does your community
All good
Your membership and discord links, and detail, isn’t listed that I can find.
Fixed and added a link to description. Thank you!
Thanks for the great stuff!
When you receive music mixed in 5.1 or atmos, do you prefer that we mix without the center channel? If we put lead vocals in the center channel, will it compete with dialog when you want to play the music in the background?
Use the center but give me stems
Hey brother can you please create a basic to pro Avid protools tutorial a long one
Sure, what topics would you like covered?
Great video! I had complaints on my channel about my talking over game-audio, but I also don't want to mute my game so hard you can't hear the game - so this is great! Thanks man!
Glad to help
That's pretty dang impressive! I was expecting a ton more artifacts but that's totally useable.
It’s aight
How does this compare with izotope
It’s different
Pretty decent.
As you mentioned, but it should be EMPHASIZED: You do want a Cloudlifter or FetHead if your pre-amp/interface/mixer has a higher noise floor, found in lower quality and cheaper equipment. It doesn't reduce the noise floor of the MIC, but the CloudLifter for example has a noise floor so low that it's basically imperceptible. So it's not the same thing as just cranking the gain on your preamp/interface/mixer. In this specific situation that I just explained, where your interface/mixer has a higher noise floor, using a CloudLifter/FetHead, etc, can literally be the difference between having a clean recording, or having to implement a gate in post because of a hiss or a buzz in the background.
Thank you very much Thomas. I honestly feel your have a gift for transfering information. If this is on video , I cant imagine what you will bring on a face to face situation educationally speaking. I have started retaking my sound editing & mixing craft from my studio days because I've been doing a lot of field and on location sound mixing for the last 15 years. I got say I am very happy I stumbled with your4Lo digital content. I recently work as field recorder on a low budget film, and I had the audacity of pitching the audio post with some collegues a a studio owner. You are our north star combined with our experience and listening criteria. Great stuff!!! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad to help people either get started or continue their journey in post audio for film and TV.
We, in Australia, also have compulsory superannuation done as a percentage of the pre tax and all expenses gross amount.
Yes but this is easily balanced with Bruce and Sheila jokes.
Thank you so much for sharing this, Thomas. I learned so much from you. 2 years ago I was working on a shitty job and your videos helped me so much. Now I work full time as a sound editor / mixer / sound designer (that's my reality here) and I don't think I could do this without your help. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Glad to help!
Man, this guy is rapping about DoorDashing? And taking pride in it. My sister and her husband do that. But he’s a backpack rapper and if you gotta autotune his vocals he must not understand how to vocalize properly. Hey maybe I’m wrong but just sayin’. You know?
I agree. Trash rapper and extremely weak delivery.
Thank you!
Just what I needed, thank you! 🙏
Thanks Thomas! Very informative 👍👍
Great video Thomas. Thanks.
It's amazing that you're willing to open the books and show people this. Love it. <3
Great video Thomas, some essential and more importantly "realistic" advise here for anyone in this business & it's very generous of you to share your expenses sheet with us.... at least you still have unions and union work in the USA, it no longer exists here in then UK and has made things even tougher....BTW your'e right, we do need more transparency around the subject of pay in our industry...
