For me it comes down to headlamps as a must have followed by a small EDC flashlight. Despite having several lights of all categories these two are the ones that i use. A keychain light with a AAA battery would be enough (and smaller/lighter) but the twisting switch often comes loose in your pocket which is why i use a slightly bigger EDC flashlight with the switch on the back. I use it to have fast access to a light source which i often hold with my mouth so that my hand are free (which you cant do with a smartphone used as flashlight). This one i always have on my person. When i need light for a longer period of time i switch to a headlamp. There i went for a smaller one with an 16340 battery in my EDC backpack. At home, for hobbies or in my emergency bag i use headlamps with an 18650 as the best compromise between weight/comfort, brightness and battery duration. As for brightness a 5lm, a 150-250lm, a 500lm mode without too much throttling and an optional turbo mode around 1000-2000lm would be enough for me. A 1lm or red light could be nice for hobbies or in the emergency kit. For me using standard batteries and a standard usb c charging connector (or being able to fit batteries with integrated usb c charging ports in terms of battery length) is a must. In addition i prefer a durable headband connection and metal headlamps. On a bugdet Sofirn often fits most of my needs while Fenix fits them a bit better but is a lot more expensive.
