    My snake plants is rotten from roots

  • @bccabernet
    @bccabernet 5 дней назад

    I have only snake plants and they're all in terracotta pots with trays (so too heavy to move to the bathroom to be watered). I use my outlook calendar to remind me to check my soil (with a soil meter) every week and once a month to wipe down their leaves. If they need water, I'll water them. If they're still moist, I wait for next week to water them. I only bottom water my plants. Usually the tray needs to be filled twice, but I check the next day with the moisture meter just in case. I usually water them at night before bed. The only time I top-water my plants is if I've replanted them so the soil can settle. I have a plant light for my snake plants as I don't get any sunlight. I know they can survive in indirect light, but my plants seem to love the artificial light, so I keep it on a timer. One weird question I have that maybe you can answer: I have the Dracaena Fernwood plant. When I repotted it recently (a year after I bought it), I saw each leaf is its own root and they're not connected to 1 main root system/rhizome or to each other. In fact, they were bound together with an elastic band that broke when I repotted it. All my other species have all its leaves connected to each other and to 1 or 2 rhizomes... In fact, you can pull one of the Fernwood leaves right out of the soil without pulling another leaf out. It's growing taller, but at a much slower rate than my other species. Is that normal?

    • @thegirlwithashovel
      @thegirlwithashovel 16 часов назад

      Yes this is normal. Just treat it like your other sansevierias and it should do well. And eventually it should have a few rhizomes connecting 2-3 leaf bunches. 👍

  • @bccabernet
    @bccabernet 5 дней назад

    I set an outlook reminder every week (Sunday) to check my plants with a water meter. I always bottom water my plants -unless I repot the plant. For its first watering in that pot, it gets top watered for the soil to adjust and then bottom watered afterwards.

    Thanks for the video...I feel better about my scheflerra's annual June/July hissy fit. It tends to drop leaves for a few weeks in the late spring/early summer. Now I wonder if that's related to the outside foliage changing the scheflerra's light source or turning on the a/c indoors. Things to note for next spring/summer.

    Help! My dawarf fiddle was doing great then all of a sudden multiple leaves have been dropping and falling off. The leaves are honestly crispy and soft but are dropping like flies. I don’t think it’s overwatering but definitely could be underwatering but I am worried about root rot. Do you think this could be a sign of that? • @thegirlwithashovel
    @thegirlwithashovel 13 дней назад

    A few tips I forgot to mention in the video: 1st - make sure your cutting tool is clean. Sterilize your scissors/pruners in a bleach solution beforehand if needed. 2nd - normally I wouldn't recommend you remove more than 1/3 of your plant at a time. I'm doing a "hard prune" here which will send the plant into shock, but I'm monitoring it accordingly. For normal trimming, don't remove more than 1/3 of the leaves at a time! 😊

  • @ebelousov03
    @ebelousov03 13 дней назад

    Nice trimming. However, I don't think your plant is going to become more bushy on top. It will only continue to grow in length just the same way it was growing. What are you going to do with those stems that you cut off? I would not throw it away, instead I would choose some of them and put them in water for appx 2 - 3 weeks, they will grow out roots that you can add to your current plant to make it bushy or you can make a new plant for yourself or anyone else...

    • @thegirlwithashovel
      @thegirlwithashovel 13 дней назад

      It will stimulate growth all along the vine. But yes, mostly on the ends. By switching the lighting right now, though, I can encourage a bit more growth on the other side of the plant while it's in growth mode, thus evening it out a bit. My next few videos will be demonstrating what I've done with the cuttings... (just what you've said... I propagated them!) 😆

    House plants and cats a huge challenge for me. Hearing your cat crying I’m assuming it’s outside of that room and wants in. Is that your solution too? I have all my plants in one room with the door closed. Wish I could place some around the house. Any suggestions?

    • @thegirlwithashovel
      @thegirlwithashovel 13 дней назад

      I just shut my cat out during the video lol. Normally my cat doesn't get into any of my plants on the shelves, just the ones on my windowsill and my floor plants. The way Ive found to have them coexist is I don't have any plants that cats like to chew on (like bamboo, dracaena, or any of the palms) and then any I have on the floor I make sure it's more bushy or full such as snake plant or some aglaonemas so it doesn't have a lot of open dirt (aka no space to make it a litter box). I hope this helps! I love my cat. 🥰

    I was so excited when I found a healthy snake plant laying out on the sidewalk without a home. Brought it here but didn't have soil so i made the mistake of sticking the roots in water. Of course root rot almost immediately. 🙄 I managed to save one stalk by clipping it and it's been sitting out for a day now. I'll give it another day or so and I'll try propagating it in water and I'm hoping it'll root soon.

    I have snake planst and many cacti. Would love to have the ponytail palm! Had one once until we babysat our granddaughter's cats. Yes, it went leafless in no time! I may try again with your recommendation.

      Good luck! Yes I had to give away my ponytail palm because my cat kept eating the leaves! 😂

    This video is excellent! I got my umbrella plant 4 years ago and it's been a journey. I was never able to keep plants alive before this one. I love all the detailed information you provided. Thank you so much!

      Not yet but it's in the queue. I haven't had them in so long I'll probably have to buy one with fungus gnats just to show you how to get rid of them! 😂

    My favourite plant is the snake plant family. I have so many of them (and of different varieties), I don't think I have room for one more. If I did, I think I would like to try the pothos.

    Hi I have questions…How many pounds is that whole brick? How do you store it between uses? Wet or dry? Does it have a nice scent?

    • @thegirlwithashovel
      @thegirlwithashovel Месяц назад

      As far as weight? I don't remember but it's incredibly light. Probably like a pound or two. I store it dehydrated then when I hydrate it whatever is left over I usually store in a tub without the lid on so it can dry first. You don't want to let any soil store wet or it can mold. The scent was fine. Like soil. I didn't notice anything particularly nice or bad about it. ❤️

    Thank you for your video. We relocated to a different state, and suddenly my violet stopped blooming(. It is healthy-looking but started to grow a lot of lighter-colored leaves. I was wondering can it be just “stressed“ from the move. I will try repositioning it to the eastern-facing window, with no direct sunlight. Step # 1: Let's give it more light🤞🏻

      Yes plants definitely go through a transition phase when moving locations. Just make sure it starts putting out healthy leaves again. If new leaves come out lighter then yes I would add more light. 👍
