Just found your channel, and I really like it. Thanks for the videos ! My new money tree has had a little bit of sunburn, but what worries me most is seeing some black on one of the individual plants. I got it from a store just three weeks ago, where it was being overwatered, and found some pests on it once I got home. So I treated it and repotted because of how incredibly soggy the soil was. But now, I'm noticing black under the "scales" of one of the trunks. It's not squishy (yet ?), but definitely not looking good. Should I remove it or wait and see if it gets soft/mushy ? (If you have the time to asnwer my question no pressure ^^"). Thank you and have a good day ;)
@@LittleWaffle Hi Amélie! Sounds like you're doing all the right things! And it's a good thing it isn't mushy yet! I would say spray it with a fungicide or a hydrogen peroxide spray just to be safe. Then it's simply a waiting game... Good luck with it! I hope you caught it fast enough to save it! ❤️
@@thegirlwithashovel Heya, I'm back with an update ! 😊 I removed the blackened stem and treated (the roots had rotten off pretty bad since I first brought it home completely soaked up and repoted into fresh soil. ) And now... He's living his best life ! Bounced back and pushing lots of new leaves. I'm delighted. Thank you for your advice 💜
My money tree becomes very full and lush when it’s outside on the porch in the summertime. At the end of summer when I bring it inside, that’s when all the problems start. last year it did perfect in my dad‘s north window and stayed beautiful up until February; and then I had to move it to a different window so it would get a little bit more light. This year it’s just doing crappy. The big leaves are falling off after turning yellow and I’ve got a bunch of tiny leaves. I have it under a grow light in the north window. I don’t know if I’m watering it too much or not enough. I think in the beginning I was watering it too much but now I think maybe I’m not watering it enough. maybe I need to feed it or change the soil.
Why did it take Google a month to show your video in my searches?! I was away for three months and asked a friend to water my indoor plants. When I left, my money tree was gorgeous, healthy, happy. I came back to find a sad, wilting, yellowing tree with more fallen leaves that leaves on the tree. I searched for answers and I knew it was an issue with water, but couldn’t for sure asses if it was too much (there were signs of it) or too little (curly, brown dry spots). Now I know it was irregular watering issues, and too much water during the winter months when my plant will naturally receive less light. Thank you so much! Hope I can still save my tall money tree
Thank you! You are the only one who really gave me any good and useful information about my money tree. Everyone else just says its over watering, or underwatering, or not enough light, but you actually described the differences in the leaves and showed examples, which is 100% more useful! Please keep doing videos like these! :)
Not specifically about money trees, but it should apply: Leaf curling could be a sign of lack of minerals, first of all magnesium or iron, but also calcium. In bonsai, small leaves are valued, since they make the tree look a small copy of large. This is achieved by placing the tree in sun. (But not to the point where the sun burns the leaves. So for money tree it would be partial or indirect sun.) Also, the growth hormone inside a tree shoots up to, so one commonly gets strong branches and big leaves on top, with small and listless leaves underneath. (like here). This is fine for big trees, but for bonsai and house plants this is bad. Moreover, the leaves on top steal the sunlight from those below, making it worse. The solution is to seriously prune top leaves and branches. One can also wire the lower branches and move them to horizontal positions, thus increasing the sunlight falling on them. In general, if you see an area where sunlight doesn't fall on leaves, you need to either cut off these leaves and branches or cut off those that block the sunlight from reaching them.
This video is very helpful. I have a tiny water plant the tag said to sprinkle water everyday? Which I’ve been doing for two years. It was only losing a few leaves here and there. I watched your video after losing 8 leaves. I dried it out for a few days and used a sprayer to lightly water the water plant evenly. I think your videos are resourceful. 🪴 Thanks again! 🌱
I have both a large money tree and a small house money tree. the large one is in earth, the house one is self watering, i am about to transplant the small one, i noticed the tips have started to turn brown, i went to your website and found the answer to great. you helped me with both plants. Thanks for the info I learned a lot. I actually experienced all except the curling. I repotted 2 times thinking that the roots got rotten and changed the soil but kept in the same pot. It’s winter when I bought my money plant and it’s doing okay back then but when I relocated it this summer, the leafs started to turn yellow, fall, and small. Tried to put it back to the same location 🤞🏼 hope it will survive 🙏🏼
I understood you to say the curled leaves won’t be corrected even when I correct the under watering issue… My plant put out a ton of new growth right after I brought it inside and pruned off some of the larger leaves, they are all curled and seem to be growing. Would it be wise to trim these curled leaves off or at least some of them? My money tree is only about 15” tall… three braided plants… with about a dozen new curled leaves… and probably a dozen old/large leaves. I wasn’t too concerned until the large leaves started getting dry and some falling off. This seems to have started - only with this plant - since the furnace started blowing heat near my plant table.
I would keep the curled leaves until you're able to have some nice new growth. Once your plant is having nice new growth you can start removing some of the curled leaves. They might look bad but they are still photosynthesizing!

Thanks for this valuable info on the ups and downs of the Money tree! I had a Money tree for the last 10 + years and noticed that it was growing so tall that it touched the ceiling in my apartment , so that the leaves had no space to grow. Also some of the leaves were spotty and were hanging over. I ended up cutting the branches and all the leaves off so that it will grow healthy. Did I do the right thing?
Yep! I know it's hard to do it in the moment but if it was really that old, then it's roots should have enough energy to put out new leaves. You're essentially starting to turn it into a large bonsai if that makes sense! 😆
I have several outside money trees that are in direct sunlight for several hours a day. They do better in shade, but as long as I slowly acclimate them they seem to thrive.A few are gigantic…(florida panhandle)
best money tree info ive gotten ive had all of these issues with the leaves and now i know why i cant seem to get the watering right on this damn plant 😂
I have been over watering....I had figured that out...but I think I am a bit late. The stem had darkened some at the bottom, and some leaves were falling off. I pulled out the small plant and it was softer on the part in the ground. I cut off some of the root, and there was a dark spot inside. Long story short, I now have a much smaller plant that I don't really know what to do with. Do I try to root it in water? Do I take off all the leaves that are left so the plant can concentrate on making more roots? Would I do better putting in soil to try to root? HELP!!!! Please, and thank you so much for your timely video!!!
Hi Sharon! When your stem is soft in my experience it is a goner. The best you can do is take cuttings and root them in water! I haven't personally rooted any brown sections of stem, but I currently have severally green stem sections (each with a leaf stem or two) rooting in straight water. I hope you have enough of your plant left for this! Good luck!!!
Is it safe wipe off/dust the leaves of a money tree? I have some dust collecting on my leaves and I want to get it off but I have always heard that you shouldn’t touch the leaves of some plants because it may remove some oils on the leaves that help it absorb sunlight. If it’s safe to wipe them, what would you recommend I use?
Hello from the UK, this is my money tree. I've recently seen the leaves change colour from green/yellow to brown and fall off, please help, tho I e just watched your video so I'll try the things you recommend first..x
I got my tree from Costco. The very next morning many of the leaves were wilting and turning yellow/brown. I’ve put it in more sunlight, and fed a lot of humidity, and watered it. Maybe I didn’t water it enough? It’s been a few days and nothing appears to help. Do you have any suggestions? The leaves are slowly starting to fall off!
Is the soil wet? Make sure you aren't overwatering it. And the yellow leaves will fall off regardless now, so just be checking in your green leaves... Are you stopping the progression of the yellowing. Also, bring it out of direct sunlight for a bit. See if that helps.
It depends. You can do either. But if a lot of leaves are sunburned I suggest leaving them until new ones grow so you aren't removing the plant's source of energy. But if it's just a leaf or two you can go right ahead. 😊
Thank so much for the info! I am a brand new plant parent and I bought a money tree yesterday. When I bought it, I can tell that it was recently watered. Some of the stems were broken or really soft where they bent. I made the mistake of leaving the tree outside to get some sun however I forgot them outside over night. It did get into the freezing temperatures. Now I brought the plant back in but the leaves nd stems are really soft and drooping. I'm not sure if I should repot the plant with new soil or prune off the leaves/stem. Any advice? Thank you!
Soft/squishy stems means there's rotting from overwatering. If it isn't too far gone I would repot it into dry & warm (not freezing) soil and possibly even consider taking some cuttings if there's any left to save. I'm assuming the worst here... If it survives, then awesome!
I have a money tree and two of the stems are mushy and soft should I cut this down off where it’s soft or should I remove the entire soft root without trying to save it
Hi! I recently purchased a small money tree at Home Depot and I have heard that most money trees are tied with bands at the base. This supposedly strangles the plant. I haven’t had any problems yet, but the soil is very stiff and I don’t want to take it apart to check. Have you had any problems with this? Any suggestions? Thanks
Hi! First off, if the soil is stiff this can cause problems too so be aware of this. Next, these bands will most likely be fine until you repot it next. They are usually a rubber band so it stretches up to a point. But that being said, next time you repot it definitely cut those suckers off! 😂
Thank you so much! Ol' Donna, I named after my mother is giving me the flux. She's about three year's old and I had been losing a lot of leaves over the past year. She was doing fine until I re-potted her over a year ago, before our recent move. She had gotten huge until I started to either over water her. Since we've been in our new place, I've obviously been under watering her and not giving her enough light. Since I heavily watered her and gave her her own plant light, she seems to be doing a lot better, so thank you for this post.
My money tree is about 6 feet tall. It was bushy and got too big. I had to move it and then leaves started dropping and even though it's back in its original place, the leaves are still dropping. I've got lots of long exposed stems. If I get ruthless and trim those back, will it shoot out, or will it just give up?
Trim it! With it being such a large plant, it will definitely have enough energy stored in it's root system that it should be fine. If you're nervous though, you can trim one stem at a time 😊
Thank you thank you thank you 😊 I'm not really a green fingers kind of woman but I've always loved plants. My mum can grow anything but me, well everything just dies. But I thought I'd give a plant a go and to be honest and to my surprise they're looking good except my money plant has been dropping leaves. I've never been too sure of when to water but my little trick is to poke my finger into the soil and feel if it's dry and if so I will water it! I've grown to love my 3 plants and have given them all names 😂 so seeing the leaves dropping made me pretty sad. I watered them yesterday so I'm 🙏🏼 no more fall off 😊 thanks for your advice and I'm going to buy one of those things that tell you when my plants need watering. Trust me, I'm loving having them around! 💚🇬🇧
I am so bummed, I've had my money trees for 3 years and its dying. I overwatered for a short period of time and caught it to late. Have you had luck with propagating them?
My money true is hugeeee its bending over because it hit the ceiling of my old house. When i moved it into my apartment a lot of the stems fell off and im having a hard time getting new ones to grow, there has only been one so far. Any tips? Do i just cut at the nodes?
Hi Iou! This sounds extremely dry! Question... Do you have any leaves left on it? Or any green stem portions? Those will be your signs of life that you might be able to propagate...
This plant should be fine with tap water, but if you're concerned, you can leave it out for a few hours in the sun. This dissipates the chlorine found in the water, which is what the problem is for most plants. I don't know if boiling it would have any clear benefits. I just leave mine out or use my water filter. 😊
So my girlfriend left my tree outside I need help trimming or repotting the money tree the leaves do look like they are sun burnt and some leaves are turning brown too so do I need to trim the leaves or repot it need help 😮
@@hecticproductionsco yes, but if all the leaves look like that, then you don't want to cut them all off at once. Cut off some of the worst ones, then as more grow, then cut the others. You need to leave some growth on there so it can continue to photosynthesize. ☺️
Possibly. But there's still a chance of it surviving if the stem is still green. I would lower your watering (since it has no leaves to use up water), and keep it in the best possible light without burning it. Give it a few weeks and it will either put out new growth, or the stem will turn dark. Here's to hoping it pulls through! 🤞
I looked for the Facebook group, houseplants for plant killers, and I can't find it! Is it still a thing? I have a money tree that's doing something that I haven't seen addressed and wanted to post a picture!
If you see roots trying to push out of the soil, or if you are watering it every day because it's drying out so fast. Pull it out and see if there are a ton of roots showing through the soil or if there isn't. It's a balance you learn more than an exact science. 👍
What kind of saw you and fertilizer is best for the money tree, I just own one probably a month now and I would like to free product any safety tip to do that, please let me know also I am blind so if you going to show any pictures of potting soil please mention to me so I can hear it I appreciate it and thank you so much
Hi Carmen! Lately I've been doing my own soil mix (to save some money since I have so many plants!) But you should be fine with a cactus and succulent mix, or an indoor plant soil with a bit of perlite added in. As for fertilizer, any indoor plant fertilizer should work. A good rule of thumb is to get one with somewhat even numbers (like 3-3-3, or 5-4-4). Then only apply as directed on the package. Stronger fertilizers will need to be applied less frequently, but weak fertilizers can be applied much more often! Good luck with your money tree!
I recently bought my money tree from the grocery store because it was on sale. I keep in on the kitchen counter where it gets moderate indirect light. It’s beginning to get yellow dots on it and I’m not exactly sure which of these issues it is. Any chance you could let me know what you think it could be
Yellow spots, depending on what it looks like can be a sign of overwatering or of insect damage such as spider mites. My guess, I would check for both!
Hello, I bought this plant a few days ago and it was delivered yesterday with leaves damaged from Frost. Is there any chance to save it? If so, how? Thank you in advance
It depends on how frozen it was. Usually there will be some leaves that freeze first before the stem... Just look for any black portions on the stem to see if it froze or not. As long as your stem stays green you should have a good chance of recovery in time 🙂
Check for insects. Aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. Maybe even scale. Insects can bite the leaves, causing them to ooze out the sticky liquid... Good luck!
My money tree is the opposite. Big leaves at bottom, little at top. Recently got a grow light for it. It was badly damaged when I got it, the leaves were torn or had holes, and at least one weirdly shaped leaf that looked pinched. I took pity on it in the store, had I waited a few weeks they had much better ones come in at a different location. i had to trim off half a dozen of the big leaves due to all the damage it had, still have a few more to remove (been doing it slowly). I used to put my face under the leaves when I first got it and take a big breath and it was like cool, fresh air, but it doesn't do that anymore sadly.
Yes. It's my hope to one day get like 6 or 7 of each plant and cause them different stresses to show the different signs. Until then I'm limited by what I've got. 😮💨
Every time I water I get yellow leaves falling off. But it’s every time! I’m just starting to try bottom watering. And I never get new leaves once they fall off. 😥
Sounds like you need brighter light and better drainage. I'd suggest soil with additional perlite. And maybe a terra cotta pot to wick away excess moisture. And yes, new leaves only come from the top. You would have to cut it back to stimulate any new leaves lower on the stem.
Without pics or anything else it's difficult to know. But most of the time it's water problems. Check your soil and see if it's too wet, or bone dry...
I have a 7 year money tree I water it every 2 weeks it’s tall and I put it by the window for summer light but it stop growing the leaves are green not brown it’s just there not growing
If it's fall or winter time then this is normal. If not, then it could use either a soil refresh by repotting it, or some fertilizer to get it going. And sometimes when things aren't growing above ground, it's because your plants is growing it's root system below ground. 😉
Hi! Please help, my money tree have grown so tall it is still sprouting more new leaves on top but all the lower leaves are turning yellow and falls off.
It sounds like it needs more light. Are the leaf nodes far apart or close together? Far apart means it's stretching for more light, shedding the lower leaves as it goes...
Hmm... did you check the soil? It definitely sounds stressed. Sounds like possible underwatering with too much sun? It's hard to tell without anything else to go off of, lol!
My money tree just hasn’t grown in like four months it’s the same size. The leaves are actually slightly curled now that you mention it maybe I’ll try the light I felt like it was already too much even being an indirect light for it but maybe I should try it it felt like the leaves were getting to dry if I had them in the light but maybe I’m wrong and I just need to water more with it. the aqua globe seems clutch. I have a friend that’s growing a money tree and they have one in it. Lol and it’s doing well.😂

If it's mushy down by the base then the roots are probably compromised as well... I would recommend removing the entire stems.
Hi what if it starts with the part of the leave turniñg white then eventually turns yellow and falls .
That sounds like sunburn. 😮💨
Thank you; it is a very helpful video!
Yay! I'm glad she's doing well!
Should I cut of the curled leave?
You can if you'd like. It won't ever uncurl. 😮💨
They don’t like too much light but also don’t like medium light. This plant is such a diva 🙄 Thank you I will try moving it and hopefully that helps.
Yep. It is a total diva lol 😂
If you're nervous though, you can trim one stem at a time 😊
Tips of my leafs are brown and crispy along with patches of brown mottled crisp patches on edge of some leafs ?
Low humidity
OMG, so much information. BUUUUTTT >.< It was all the information I was looking for. Thank you for making this video! :)
Hi 👋 lovely video.
I have one question, how often do you watering this money tree 🌳? Is it once a week?
Thank you 😊
Hi! Here is my latest video on watering that should help you out! ruclips.net/video/yj2ST3V2s8Q/видео.html
I am so bummed, I've had my money trees for 3 years and its dying. I overwatered for a short period of time and caught it to late. Have you had luck with propagating them?
Yes. Cut the portions that aren't soft and mushy. Then let it dry for a day or two, then place in water! Simple!
My money true is hugeeee its bending over because it hit the ceiling of my old house. When i moved it into my apartment a lot of the stems fell off and im having a hard time getting new ones to grow, there has only been one so far. Any tips? Do i just cut at the nodes?
Yes. By pruning it it will produce more branches. But make sure you're leaving enough leaves at any given point that you're not shocking the plant. 😊
Would like to see more plant issues solved.
I've also heard they don't like being moved much.
What about leaves getting transparent spots on them and the crisping up( just the transparent spots)?
It's crisping up after the spots? Or are the spots where it's crisping up?
@@thegirlwithashovelit turns transparent and then crisps up
Thank you
great trouble shooting video. Thanks!
One of the 3 bases of me tree is really dry and breaks when I touch it is there anything I can do to save it?
Hi Iou! This sounds extremely dry! Question... Do you have any leaves left on it? Or any green stem portions? Those will be your signs of life that you might be able to propagate...
All of my money trees leaves fell off after I repotted it for the first time. Also I noticed bugs jumping around the soil and trunk 😬
Yes I would definitely get an insecticide! 😮
is it ok to use tap water or should we boil tap water first? many thanks.
This plant should be fine with tap water, but if you're concerned, you can leave it out for a few hours in the sun. This dissipates the chlorine found in the water, which is what the problem is for most plants. I don't know if boiling it would have any clear benefits. I just leave mine out or use my water filter. 😊
Hi , how about the holes in the leaves or like yours also seemed to have that problem ,half eaten or broken leaves why does that happen?
Mine was from my cat chewing on it lol!
But if you're seeing holes, first check your pets, then also make sure you don't have any insects on them!
So my girlfriend left my tree outside I need help trimming or repotting the money tree the leaves do look like they are sun burnt and some leaves are turning brown too so do I need to trim the leaves or repot it need help 😮
I wouldn't repot it or you would shock it more. Just leave it, then any brown leaves you can trim off or let naturally fall as they brown. Good luck!
What if it’s that yellowish water color look cut them off due to the sun burn
@@hecticproductionsco yes, but if all the leaves look like that, then you don't want to cut them all off at once. Cut off some of the worst ones, then as more grow, then cut the others. You need to leave some growth on there so it can continue to photosynthesize. ☺️
I have it worst! My plant lost ALL the leaves but still has a strong green color in the main branch. Is going to die?
You can find it at facebook.com/groups/houseplantsforplantkillers
Let me know if you're still having issues finding it! 😊
How do I know when it’s time to repot my money tree?
Your cat eyes are mesmerizing
Hello, I bought this plant a few days ago and it was delivered yesterday with leaves damaged from Frost. Is there any chance to save it? If so, how? Thank you in advance
It depends on how frozen it was. Usually there will be some leaves that freeze first before the stem... Just look for any black portions on the stem to see if it froze or not. As long as your stem stays green you should have a good chance of recovery in time 🙂
@The Girl with a Shovel Thank you very much!
@@thegirlwithashovel Hi, one more question, should I remove frozen leaves?
@@lenkakasperek8039 you can. They will eventually fall off, but if the entire leaf is frozen then I'd say go ahead!
@The Girl with a Shovel once again many thanks 😊
Thanks! 💚
What to do if the there is sticky like glue under your money tree leaves ?
Check for insects. Aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. Maybe even scale. Insects can bite the leaves, causing them to ooze out the sticky liquid... Good luck!
Amazing
Were to cut and prime the leaves
I'm not sure what you are asking here... Are you asking for propagation?
So my tree is more brown I mean the the base I can I save it
Are you saying the base is mushy brown? Because if so, then it's best to propagate the green tops because your stem will most likely die. 😮💨
I need to find out why my tree looses its stems, doesn’t bush but continues in height. (I gave a one stem tree)
Try giving it more light. And cut the leading stem to encourage lateral growth!
If there are smaller leaves at the top it's saying it isn't getting as much light as it used to, so the plant light sounds like a great idea! 👍
what if my apartment has VERY little natural light?
Hi Tammy! I would recommend you get a plant light! They have quite a few full spectrum lights that can screw into regular light sockets 😊
I wish there were pictures of each sign
@@thegirlwithashovel thank you!
My plant was fine but now it’s stem has no leaves why help me plz
Without pics or anything else it's difficult to know. But most of the time it's water problems. Check your soil and see if it's too wet, or bone dry...
Ohhh im trying to send photos 🤔
I have a 7 year money tree I water it every 2 weeks it’s tall and I put it by the window for summer light but it stop growing the leaves are green not brown it’s just there not growing
If it's fall or winter time then this is normal. If not, then it could use either a soil refresh by repotting it, or some fertilizer to get it going. And sometimes when things aren't growing above ground, it's because your plants is growing it's root system below ground. 😉
@@thegirlwithashovel thank u
Thank you! I requested to join the FB group. :D
My leaves are all green just drooping down :(
Hmm... did you check the soil? It definitely sounds stressed. Sounds like possible underwatering with too much sun? It's hard to tell without anything else to go off of, lol!
💚
You are so pretty
Can you bring a money tree back?
I'm not sure what you mean by bringing it back...?
Grow only one stock with three leaves then it show new growth and the good stock drops off
New growth is a good sign though. Keep trying to figure it out. 👍
All of leaves are gone and I see nothing growing. 😭
I'm sorry. 😖
The information is good, but please sometimes I think that you talk to eight-year-old children
Seeing as I have 3 children under the age of 8, yes I probably slip into it from time to time lol.
Lol and it’s doing well.😂
Yes usually if it hasn't been growing it's low on either light, water, or fertilizer. 👍
Hi what if it starts with the part of the leave turniñg white then eventually turns yellow and falls .
That sounds like a sunburn to me... 🙃
