There's something amazing about driving an old car you build and maintain yourself. I’ve been playing with old VWs for almost 30 years and dreamed about driving old cars for longer than that. I bought Dweezil in the mid 90’s and quickly became fascinated with their legendary engineering, the experience of working on them, and the feeling of driving an old car down the road. It’s what I want to do everyday and I know you do too. Together, I believe we can keep these beautiful machines on the road and celebrate the self-reliance of maintaining our own transportation. We’re going to build it and go. We’ll share the right techniques, approach, and reasons for what we do, how we do it, where we go, and why we must. We’ll even do it live at a few events along the way. There are a lot of great people in our circle of friends and I hope you’ll join us here at Haptic Garage.
We're gonna be busy next year

We had this great idea to do a Swap Meet Challenge on behalf of Annie's VW and it worked... until it didn't. Data service just wouldn't keep up but we didn't quit! Annie did great dealing with the dropouts and the surviving footage is included here. Check out the whole story on the first Haptic Garage Swap Meet Challenge! Already watched the live stream? It's good to see another educational video from you. Happy New Year.
Great video again Brent! Love your content!
is the case number listed on the cardex like Porsche issues for their cars? I know the original engine number for my 356 and found a case that was 1 number higher (so close) than my original engine? VW experts could probably tell you if this is possible?
you mentioned you received a stack oof engine cases form someon else. Did you ever put the case numbers out there to see if you had someones engine case from their car and could remarry them together?
Hi Peter, never thought about that but it's a neat idea. How would a person know their original engine number? It's different than what is found on the chassis. Maybe it's in the paperwork?
Nope you’re wrong. The thrust cut will be the same depth as the thickness of the bigger thrust bearing flange. It does NOT move the thrust bearing anywhere. So the dowel pin still lines up properly. This is one of the reasons why I have people making how-to videos, when they clearly have never done the job they’re trying to show others how to do. If you want to actually know how the job is done properly, ask an experienced person.
Also, you never take any material from the inner side of the thrust bearing g, because that WILL change the location of the dowel pin! Don’t be telling others how to do something wrong!!!!
Hey Mike. I'm sticking with what I said in the video, but you may prefer the way I explained it when I repeated this experiment here: ruclips.net/video/wLwkHQdJt8Y/видео.html
The problem with that set up is your setting the cutters off the bar , do yourself a favor and build a tool like i did that sets the cutter on the bar .. just saying
Hi Brent. These cutters were designed to be set off the bar but I'm willing to try other methods. Are there any pictures/video available of your setup?
@@HapticGarage I cant post pics here , thats why i put the link but thats ok ..
Great to see you again. Thanks for the inspiration to make more videos in 2025.
Thanks Zimm, the world needs more @zimms-world on RUclips!
Take care my friend! Have a great Christmas!
Thanks @dubworldvwadventures , you too!
Hey Brent glad to see you back again. Hope all is well with you. This is interesting with the cases. I will be watching.
Thanks Robert, things are busy but good! Yes, checking out these cases and seeing what we can do with them is going to be fun. Always great to hear from you, have a Merry Christmas!
I did an engine rebuild only once in my life.... for a Lime Green 62 Vert.... replaced one piston and Jug....and it ran Fantastic!!! Circa 1980.. Parts were under 100 bucks. All in...
Wow, those were the days. I remember when cases were $300 in the 90's. Whenever it is, we have to do it while we can!
Thanks for the updates. Excited to see the future.
Thanks Terry, great to have you with us!
Being the trust cut sb 864 that is down there for sure
Saving them is getting more popular now because they are getting harder to find. I'm sure my running restored 1200 will go fast
Yeah, it's practically the end of the line at the 2nd OS.
It might very well go quick Tim, there's always someone that needs a runner!
Great to see you again Brent! I'm always happy to virtually get my hands dirty and do the things I wish I had the opportunity and space to do! Happy Holidays, likewise!
Thanks @ajk2749, it's great to have you with us getting it done in the shop. Thanks for the Holiday wishes!
Happy holidays Brent. That’s a mess of cases.
Thanks Greg, yeah it's a bunch. Was really nice to find one that doesn't need a line bore!
Love the dog footage! What a sweetie!
Thanks @andoletube, Roadie is a great dog. Loves being in the middle of whatever is going on and has a heart of gold. Good to have you with us!
Hi Brent, same deal here for more then a year absent. mine is medical ( surgery ) and can't wait to work on the beetle again. hopefully he will be done in 2025 and have a bunch off projects in the pipe to work on. nice to see that you are thinking about the future and i hope it will work out. there is a great community vw out there. happy holiday's to you and your family Brent.
Oh no! I hope you're feeling better these days and the health challenges are behind you. Your gorgeous beetle needs to be on the road! Thanks for the encouragement and holiday wishes, it's always great to hear from you @VWBEETLEOVAL1955
@ hernia surgery, knee surgery and a new hip replacement is a thought year. But the hip is healing very slow by some complications off muscles. But day by day better. But after all we didn’t lose the fight spirit to be back!!!
GREAT VIDEO!! GREAT INFO. KEEP IT GOING.
Thanks @hummv8!
Happy Holidays to you too. Looking forward to watching next year, new videos.
Thanks vintage76, I appreciate the Holiday wishes, will enjoy it with family as usual. If not before, we'll see you again in the New Year!
Hey! Good to see you, Brent. Always look forward to your videos.
Thanks stuck1000, great to hear from you!
Whats your take on using the standard case separator tool like the ones J-Bugs or EMPI sells?
Hey Mark! If you are referring to the ones that go in the oil pump opening, I like 'em. The case I opened in this video was an easy example because it was empty (no crank, cam, lifters...) and had no sealant. The case splitter tool is a great way to get things started, if only on one corner of the case. From there the rubber mallet, some lifter clips, and little patience is your friend!
@@HapticGarage Glad to hear this!
Love hearing that you’re trying for more videos next year🎉👏👏. I love the long detailed videos you have produced in the past, they play a lot in the shop
Thanks Kyridge, I appreciate the encouragement. It's a lot more fun when I'm able to post regularly, and I'll do what I can to keep bringing the detail!
nice one Brent, and thanks for the shout out! Good reminder for me to get my #vdubrun25 goals set and shared! also-- looks to me like your VW case stash is multiplying like gremlins. just don't feed them after midnight and i'm sure you'll be fine.
Thanks Annie, and you betcha! You've kept the concept alive while I had to sit this year out. Lots of respect for that. We'll go big in '25 and good things will come from it! I'll keep an eye on the Gremlesiums.
Love your content. Looking forward to new vids. Thanks for showing us.
Thanks Ian, I'm happy to share and glad to have you with us!
Well, looks like you have plenty of cases to get you by for a short while.
Yup, this should keep me busy
Hi Brent, Great plans for the coming year, 2025. From here I wish you and yours a wonderful 🇳🇴🇳🇱☮🍀🇺🇸
Thanks Hubertus, and same to you and your loved ones. Will we see a T3 on the road in '25?!? I admire your persistence and know you'll love the result!
Great theme of showing how VW engines are rebuildable. We all started somewhere. Do not want to mention how many engines I went through before was able to keep a 400 HP plus turbo engine together. No one to learn from here in Canada.
Thanks fast buggy and good point. Stockers are a great starting point and a much less expensive way to learn!
Very much looking forward to watching your videos…..l always learn something from you. Thank for the videos
Thanks flydude, happy to share and glad to have you with us!
Never cut the back side Bad information🤦🏾♂️
Hey. Trying to make my own align boring tool. This and your other vid were really useful. You wouldn't have the dimensions of the pieces on either en that are used to set the bar in the case would you?
Hey @camberclown, how is the project going? I don't recall the dimensions, but if you're still interested I can take a look next week.
Tins fit like a glove.
Thanks laroark!
Not a expert by any means but you would think you would rotate each cutter by 1/4 to each other. Enjoy your videos.
Thanks harleycruiser, yeah, I think it would be worthwhile to try that. I've seen Portatool bars setup both ways but the Truline bars are designed with the cutters clocked 90 degrees apart.
Sorry, I missed your broadcast. Never got notification. Like to see your adventures at the swap meets.
No worries @dog01b52, glad you were able to catch up with us! Despite the tech issues we had with the live stream, this was a fun twist on our usual swap meet live streams. We'll have to do more of this soon!
Great video, lots of good things I need to learn.
Thanks Levi!
Hi Brent, nice video with a lot of different swap parts, Nice you did find some for Annie & your self, Greetings.Hubertus
Thanks Hubertus, I was in the swap meet the entire time, glad to find a few treasures for myself and friends!
Don’t sweat the little back ducts; you can get them aftermarket from EMPI and they fit well as opposed to most aftermarket tin. You got a great deal on the rest!
Thanks, good to know. I have some of those on hand that I'll send along with the other parts.
is annie winter driving it? if not I am not so sure about the need for a thermostat.....I just drove up to the mountains at 27 degrees and my bus ran great.....Not running too cold. that would need to be under 160 degrees. Highly unlikely.
Hey Mike. I'm sticking with what I said in the video but it's neat to hear from you again.
hey Brent! Thanks again for this fun little side-quest I put you on! This will make a HUGE difference for Helen's little engine moving forward and I'm excited to make the swap. I'd love to try a live stream like this again in the future for sure. Sorry I didn't couldn't be in the chat during the premier! Life, am I right?? ha!
Thanks Annie, I'm excited for you to make the upgrade and like the way you're doing it- work with what you have and make improvements as you're able. Glad you're up for another live stream, this was so much fun while it lasted!
Bring a small shopping cart, or wagen to haul parts around. It keeps your hands free.
I've used a variety of methods, including parking Dweezil nearby or stashing at a friend's swap space. A custom wagon would be a fun addition
@@HapticGarage Having my wagen at swap meets helps, especially for heavy parts.
Yeah, definitely been some times that it would have been helpful. This time I bought an antique pallet jack and needed friends with a trailer to help!
Those fan shrouds with the venturi rings, are off the 1975-79 FI engines.
Good info, thanks @vintage76! Do they have an advantage for other applications?
@@HapticGarage Yes, those venturi rings can help any type 1 engine. Look it up, on the samba.
The Venturi rings help with more airflow. Andrig manufactures and sells them for OEM and aftermarket shrouds.
@@vayabroder729 I'll look them up Vayabroder. I have a couple with the venturis I've been saving for the right build. It's good to understand them better!
@vayabroder729 If the FI shrouds are priced right, it will be cheaper to buy them and remove the venturi rings off them. Or used the FI shrouds. The aftermarket venturi rings are $55 plus shipping.
I agree with you about the thermostats, on air-cooled engines.
Thanks @vintage76
90% of cars in CA dont have thermostats.....Running mostly in warmer weather at this point. No freezing winter driving anymore. For that theory to be good your engine would need to be running at less than 160 degrees. Which is what most engines ran at before smog equipment. when most air cooled engines are running between 260 and 300 in the summer.
If you’re operating the car in colder climates I’d say yes; they help in warming up the motor appropriately.
I made it
Woohoo! Hey Greg!
Well there you go
Hey Fred! It was great hanging out at the show with you last weekend, looking forward to the next one!
I see u using kerosene for cleaning am I right about that. Why?
Kerosene makes a great shop solvent without being really really flammable like other options. I've tried the organic stuff but it didn't do the job. I'm fortunate to have a parts washer with a petroleum compatible pump.
@ I noticed that The fluid was reddish. Thanks for your responses to my dummy ?
I’ve always used the paper gaskets but you say they are a joke. Please tell me what’s better, is it cork or a neoprene ? Thanks.
Hey @RJLM330, I use them too but first give both sides a coat of Permatex 3H and let it dry. I feel that makes it more like a real gasket. Because it's fully dry when installed, there isn't a lot of cleanup at the next oil change. Just the untreated paper seems likely to wick oil. Having said all of that, do what works and thanks for watching!
Despite being 4yr old this has series on repairing the has been extremely enjoyable and instructional. Just watching you fit and finish the tins has taught me how to at least learn to try and do some welding. I have not skipped forward to see the end of this restoration. So it’s like a thriller movie. Keep on.
Thanks @RJLM330, so glad you found the series and are enjoying it start to finish!
