Hylics: A Recreational Program Review
Hylics is an RPG maker game/art piece a surreal, abstract style and a heavy dose of randomly generated text. In it Gibby, the King of the Moon, kind of soaks a lard beneath the fate-creature, and we can't have that.
Personally, i struggled with enjoying it but came to accept it for more or less what it is, but still wrestle with defining it's place as a video game. Overall though, I'd give it a strong "Alright. Well. That happened."
The next video should get back to the normal stuff.

Ps2 review - Drakan: The Ancients' Gates
Просмотров 63119 часов назад
Drakan: The Ancients' Gates is a ps2 third person action adventure game developed by Surreal Software and released in 2002. We join Rynn and Arokh on a journey through a fantasy land to fight a demon king and bring dragons back to the world of Drakan. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver is a 1999 Legend of Zelda-like that falls from the nest Blood Omen made and spread it's tattered wings. Despite Blood Omen's success, I still think this is what most people think of when they recall the series, but how does it hold up now, over 20 years later? Well, pretty good actually. Guess I didn't need to make a whole video about it, but it's there if you'd like...

Classic Spyro was a masterclass in making a game for kids

I loved the original Spyro trilogy on the ps1. Now, more than twenty years later, I want to look back and talk at you about why I think these games were and still are so magical for kids (and adults.) This originally started out as a much longer criticism of The Legend of Spyro: A new beginning, but I didn't like mixing the two ideas together. So that video will be coming next. I hope you enjoy...

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain is a dark fantasy top-down rpg originally released on the Playstation in 1996. I wouldn't so much say that games have rules (6:40), more that you have expectations of a game and games of a particular genre to provide you with feedback in response to certain milestones. When you kill enemies in RPG's, you gain experience - kill enough enemies, that experience buys you levels, which translate into combative aptitude. In Hylics, you gain meat - this meat IS experience in the sense that it is a common drop supplied by most enemies and lets you either win fights or stay in them for longer, but it's delayed experience. Meat translates to HP; if an RPG's level up system only provided you with HP on level up, then these two things would be functionally the same with all but one difference - meat requires you to die first, and you have to put that meat into a meatgrinder in the afterlife (which is, itself, a tongue-in-cheek commentary about RPG 'grinding'). Hylics embodies the spirit of the early RPG genre, but its intent on twisting the themes of the genre is very precise and measured, and that feeling of being a confused child is critical to its impact. When I was a kid playing RPG's, I would wonder if I was ever going to level up after so many fights, and I wasn't able to understand the dialogue of NPC's speaking in Olde English, but I was along for the ride because of the stylings, gameplay, and music most of the time, all of which Hylics attempts and often succeeds in delivering on. I think, largely, the reason that Hylics bounced off for you is because of this rigid idea of what games are 'supposed to be' - do thing, number goes up, win game - when Hylics is trying its best to make you feel like a fish out of water, like the world you're in doesn't make sense, like it's doing things out of order or it's breaking a convention that's there for a reason. It's up to the player whether or not they go with the flow or fight the tide, glad you eventually let loose. Hylics is a classic RPG fan's RPG - I would really recommend checking out some older games like Chrono Trigger before looking into Hylics 2. You earned a sub from me, keep it up dude

    • @KalTheSkeleton
      @KalTheSkeleton 22 часа назад

      You are of course, correct, that a game doesn't necessarily require rules to be considered a game. To follow on from that point, the rules I was referencing in that instance are twofold. Typically a game world will have it's own internal "rules" that it needs to maintain consistency. This builds that sense of immersion in the tangibility of the world even if they don't necessarily make sense against the truths we know in reality. The secondary set of rules would be more genre wide and lend themselves to our "vocabulary" as gamers. Health and mana, turn based combat and the like, those help you to be grounded with the game in relation to other games you already know. The realization of how completely Hylics had turned those expectations against me was the major hurdle, and coming to terms with them was what finally let me enjoy the game for what it is. I would have liked to go in to them more in the video, but I worried that it would be even more ramble-y than it already was, and I wasn't sure I could structure it in any way that was sensible and entertaining. Even the video that turned out, which was intended to emulate that journey, was probably reaching to far for my limited writing and editing chops. I've seen a little bit of Hylics 2, and it looks pretty good, though I am curious about the Chrono Trigger comparison. I've played a lot of classic RPG's, though they're not my bread and butter, that's a big name to drop in reference, so I'll expect good things but try to keep a blank mind. Thanks for watching.

    • @liambrown500
      @liambrown500 14 часов назад

      @@KalTheSkeleton I reference Chrono Trigger largely because it does standard RPG tropes, rules, and beats incredibly well, so playing it or a game like it will let you better contextualize why Hylics works through its warping of these conventions - I wouldn't go so far as to say Hylics deconstructs them or subverts them, but it certainly plays with them. Playing Hylics without being intimately familiar with classic turn=based RPG's is like watching Blazing Saddles before watching any other cowboy movie - you'll be entertained, but you'll be missing essential information for making your viewing experience better

    • @KalTheSkeleton
      @KalTheSkeleton 4 часа назад

      Ah I'm with you. Also, Blazing Saddles is fantastic, so that's another strong comparison. I do love a 'meta' experience, especially one that handles it's fourth wall breaking with a bit of subtlety, so it sounds like it will be a good time.

      It was surprising, and haven't heard anyone talk about it before, but I think it worked out okay. I think most developers are so unsure of a sequel that they feel like they have to tie things up in an unsatisfying way, just in case. Soul Reaver 2 picks up right from the end of 1 though, and I don't know that I've seen that in a game before. Usually there is at least a big time skip. Thanks, I think I'm finding a good flow in terms of cadence, though I do worry sometimes about being too slow. There was indeed a lot that was cut! Not only from remaining files, but the alpha and beta builds plus unused voice lines where discovered, plus interviews from which the fans could reconstruct the plot and areas for the most part. The story originally was to continue as following: - Instead of time traveling Kain leaves and you are able to acquire a part of his soul, enabling you to shift from the spirit world into the world of the living without the necessity of the portals. - Then you go to the human city which had a whole sewer area where you find a secret cult lead by a sorceress who worship Kain as a God. You kill the sorceresses and acquire her ability to posses other beings aka. controlling other npcs for puzzles or some fun. - With this ability you can enter Turels lair, which is the final and cut brother. It is a giant smokestack with molten Rock at the bottom. When you kill Turel you acquire stronger telekinesis. - With the enhanced telekinesis you can reach the smokestack area and use it's upwards winds to fly high into the sky and reach Kains mountain retreat. Here you get your final showdown with Kain, but before that you must kill Ariel, which is the Ghost lady bound by the pillars and consume her so that the Soul Reaver can kill Kain. Kain even encourages you to do it and applauds you for being able to do it "You have your father in you after all", with father referring to himself as the father of Raziel. After you kill Kain the Soul Reaver reaches it's ultimate form. - From the mountain retreat you're able to glide to the upper half of the silenced cathedral your second brother lived in. Here you activate all the pipes which kill all vampires in Nosgoth. - In an interview with the story writer Amy Hennig it was revealed that after killing all Vampires some catastrophe happens which leads Raziel to flee into the past to attempt to undo this catastrophe, which will ultimately lead to the same conclusion in the future three installments! So the stories conclusion remains the same!

      It's impressive to see how much they had planned, I would have loved to see the cathedral eradicate the vampires, and Raziel facing down the elder god with a kain infused reaver. Good vid, btw the iron chests won't eventually break after multiple flames. Only with a head charge.

      Thanks for watching, and dammit! I was sure I remembered them breaking from fire, but you're totally right. I even went back in to the game to check. I have to pin your comment now to combat my misinformation.

      I've seen a lot of fans out there, and I love some games others would say are bad. Just a miss for me, you know? Thanks for watching all the same.

      This is my real voice lol. I get pretty anxious with the microphone though, i guess it comes off kind of robotic.

      @@KalTheSkeleton I didn't think your voice sounded like ai. It's been half a decade since i've been in college so i may be a bit rusty, but you have a good downward voice inflection. (Which is way better than ending your sentences with an upward voice inflection.) I think the way you spoke sounded human with the variety you added to certain words.

      @witch402 Thanks, I'm trying to be and sound relaxing al-la dungeonchill, but I think my nerves combined with how I edit it my breathing sounds and mistakes does sound a little unnatural. Like maybe I should leave in some pauses. I've done that in my longer videos, but it is a learning process. Anyway, thanks for watching, and for your kind words.

    Nice. I've always liked Spyro, and this was a pretty good way of putting why. Good job!

      It really is a wonderful game. I hope the review didn't come off too negative. Now that I'm done working on it, I realize that I left out so many good things that I could have said.
