Randomly exploding makes for exciting casual games. But I heave a giant sigh whenever i see designs with a single SRM2. Or a full ton of MG ammo for 1 or 2 MGs. Maybe just whenever i see a full ton of MG ammo at all.
@@cargo_vroom9729 lmaoooo true. Half tons of MG ammo are really necessary IMO. I think we should be able to take half ton bins of anything actually. 25 SRMs is still plenty for 2 SRM 2s or a single 4. And taking 2 half tons would allow for special ammos more easily.
AC-5. Too heavy for its low damage and has to carry ammo. SRM 2. You can probably work in an SRM 4 if ur considering a srm2 onto a mech. Which is far better Machine Gun..aka the inferior small laser...just use a small laser
@@DaytonaRoadster MGs are very good if you have some extra tonnage and you're at your heat cap. MG ammo blows up alot tho... but ya the extra damage can be very good on a build that wants to be up close. Like a 5/8 heavy or something.
An illustrative example of the BV costs of speed, firepower, and armor consider the following: 1: An Atlas with NO WEAPONS except a BIG STICK, and has max armor (4/6 movement, Hatchet) 2: A Banshee with THIN SKIN but two PPCs and six medium lasers. (22 heatsinks, 4/6 movement and only 88 freakin points of armor) 3: A BEACHED WHALE with 4 AC-10s, aka The Annihilator 1-A. (2/3, 200 points of armor, only ten rounds per gun, and a whole 18 heatsinks) All mechs are tech level one, standard engine, heck, standard everything. Which mech is the most expensive? Which is the cheapest? The BV costs are relatively close. The BEACHED WHALE is the most expensive at 1434. Atlast BIG STICK costs 1391. And its the fragile THIN SKIN Banshee thats the cheapest, at 1289!
My issue with the SRM carrier is that people won't want to return to the table after having to count out the damage for every individual missile. At least being swarmed by urbies is a funny way to lose
@@alecciarosewater7438 Lol ya u can say the same thing about the LBX 20...
@@TheManyVoicesVAIf it's not introductory rules or alpha strike then it's unlikely to find itself on my table. Unfortunately the SRM Carrier is both and 6/6/0 is entirely too much damage for a vehicle and with 2 armor/3 struc you cant even quickly kill it
@alecciarosewater7438 it is definitely very scary lol.
clan pulse lasers, the only digusting clan CRAP ill bother getting
@@DaytonaRoadster lol they have better autocannons, too. :p
The shadow hawk. Jack of all trades, terrible at all of them. It has decent armour and mobility but that is it. In a game I made testing out a scenario i literally left one alone in my side/read arc as it's AC5 and SRM2 is pituful. My houserules of doubling the AC5 fire rate and trippling the AC2 make it marginaly better but still. Centurion is better at everything. The Jaggermech is a good light me h harasser imho. But yeah, a strong sneeze by something like a Thunderboltcan topple him over. Using my house rules makes it better but until you add endo, the design is just not armoured enough. I get the role it iseant to play in combined arms. It isnlike a shilka. Protection against small arms and shrapnel and dedicated AA platform. But in mech vs mech of the succession wars... I mean, it has the tonnage of a thunderbolt with the armour of a blackjack. And if you go endo, you can customize the design further removing all ACs and replacing them with 2 UAC10s for instance. He k you don't even need endosteel, replace the autocannons with 2 AC10s and that is it. You have spate tonnage for armour now and you will punch harder.
Masc gives you the run speed of a bigger engine for a lot less mass than a proper upgrade. I think the BV2 cost is justified on some machines. I find it useful on brawler heavies / fast assaults, the two extra MP will close range brackets a lot faster, especially against a backpedaling opponent... and once you're in optimal range you would stop using it anyway. Any turn when I would run anyway I can engage MASC with high chances it works. With run-and-gun mechs moving just to maintain TMM, now you're paying 100% cost for 66% benefit... plus for a couple tons of extra weaponry versus what you'd be able to with a larger engine.
@@jonbezeau3124 ya it's probably more worth it on bigger machines. One fix I saw was start the MASC checks at 1+. That way you can use it for a couple turns at no risk and at least get guaranteed benefit from that BV investment.
@TheManyVoicesVA it would be funny to balance MASC and Ultra autocannons by making all other advanced tech work on dice rolls... double heatsinks, improved JJs
@jonbezeau3124 lol there are rules for that in some cases. There's a rule where your DHS can degrade for example.
Huge thanks for this explainer. Is there also a resource for c-bill cost? I wonder what the differences are for cost/benefit. Edit: seems dominated by engine size, then heavy weapons. Surprised by high costs on Assassin, Archer, JagerMech, Charger, Banshee
@@jonbezeau3124 yes Cbill balancing favours small slow mechs. XL and Light engines are very poor value. Vehicles are generally very cheap and hit above their weight.
@TheManyVoicesVA the thing I like about BV balancing is how some heavy and even assault mechs can still show up with a numbers advantage appropriate to their per-unit performance.
@jonbezeau3124 absolutely haha. The Banshee is a big cheap armor brick that is fast for its size for example.
@@TheManyVoicesVA the old Banshee is great if we're honest about how bad average firepower was in 3025 TR... PPC + AC/5 is midrange on par with all the machines that can't quite fire 2 PPC every turn, and then starts throwing hands for 10 points each
@jonbezeau3124 the kicks are where it's at. It will just de-leg any light mech lol. Punches are more overall damage but removing mobility is so good. Even many mediums will suffer a leg crit.
Over on the MegaMek discord there's also a guy working on "Mega strike" which is an Alpha Strike port to the mega mek environment on 2D hex maps. There's good fan projects out there.
@@maroonmattadoor5022 oh wow. That is pretty cool! I like megamek well enough but the 3d models and animations in this are like... leaps and bounds ahead lol. It really helps put me into the game, ya know?
@@TheManyVoicesVA Completely agree on that. It's just exciting there's so many fan projects out there for BT
Except that range 1-2 is a highly relevant range band
It looks great! Love the effects and animations, and I like how it has the armor/structure pips and the movement dice right about the Mechs. I do hope the dev continues to develop this, as a dedicated Alpha Strike app would be amazing. That said, I DO have an acquaintance who created a mod for Table Top Simulator(Steam) for Alpha Strike. It's not as flashy or polished of a UI as this game, but it has 3d models & terrain that can be movedaround as well as AS Cards for many Mechs. It's a bit more manual in how you have to interact with it, but it's perfectly playable. Def going to give this a shot!
@@whitefoxplays I should pick up TTS next time it's on sale haha.
@@TheManyVoicesVA For sure! You can usually get it for 50% off ($10) when it's on sale. Besides Alpha Strike, you can also play the Battletech CCG, among the thousands of non BT games.
@whitefoxplays oh Im aware haha. My introduction to Tabletop Battletech was Arthur Perkins of APGamingReal. He ran several Battletech campaigns in TTS and the tables and everything looked very nice. It's just lots of work since as you say, TTS often has physical sheets and stuff which are a bit finnicky. I like Megamek because it's so fast. All the dice and stuff are rolled for you.
Will check it out
I'm glad the computer issues were resolved with relatively little pain.
@@Norade the sound isnt exactly like what I wanted in this ep still haha. But it's better! I will keep refining it.

I never understood, why skirmishers like the SRM carrier or Saladin hover tank do carry so much ammo. Once they show their nose, they may get one salvo out, but are focussed down rapidly immediatly after. Usually a waste of unit. But: If the opponent knows, that a part of the map is 'covered' by a highly mobile AC20 or a wall of SRM death, you can simply deny areas or force enemy fire away from your usefull units. So at least they served some purpose. ;)
@@JohnDoe-hc7jf ya Id rather have even 1-2 tons of extra armor rather than ammo Ill never use haha. The Saladin kinda needs it if u wanna take precision shots.
We recently played two games with hillariously bad 'Mechs. Each of us built a lance for the other. Turns out, a normal Shadow Hawk, Urbi, Scorpion, or Champion is far better than expected. AC10 or PPC in such a bad machines melee are king. The SHD-2D, CDA-2B, and DV-6M are still extremely bad though.
@@JohnDoe-hc7jf big piercing weapon good. Who knew?! Lol. Many people in this comment section disagree and think the Dervish is the bee's knees. I love that you used a scorpion tho. Wild movd.
@@TheManyVoicesVA The SCP-1N was only in, because my opponent somehow thought it had an AC2 or AC5 only instead of the PPC. In this case it would really have been a bad one. :D
@JohnDoe-hc7jf I have played a fair bit of competitive Battletech. I have never seen anyone take a Scorpion. It is a bad mech lol. Not the *worst* mech, but a bad one.
@@TheManyVoicesVA Aye, it really is not a good one. Do you have a Discord or the like? I really like such tactical discussions and knowledge share.
@JohnDoe-hc7jf for now the MRC is my Battletech home. discord.gg/UnwFRV4xha I have a Discord but I don't have the resources to admin it. So it's not open to the public rn.
Very good tactical concepts explained here, not only relevant for BT btw. ;) Reg. the Awesome firing first on the SHD: I usually try to always hit the weakest armored unit, if the TMM is the same between several potential targets, thus ensuring a quicker end to one OpFor unit. When the AWS went fwd. instead of into the woods, I think princess rather tried to get in even better range, while benefitting from PC, but yeah, that is princess for you. :D And yes, lights and fast movers that go slow (below 3 TMM) are dead meat. Sometimes I even forgoe a 6 to hit on a big boi, if I chance the light one against 7 or 8 with enough guns to really hurt. Btw, getting into the back or at least left side of the Vulcan with your Falcon, you could have walked backwards (button 'back up') there, giving you the same low TMM of 1 but only walking instead of running, right? Same with the GHR as is jumped so conveniently close. Why make life harder on yourself? :D And I like how you use and recommend MegaMek for beginners (e.g. in you 6 min video). Due to its very strict rules adherence beginners may wonder: 'But why can't I do jump in circles for better TMM?' and actually look it up to understand. Very nice work!
@@JohnDoe-hc7jf Thanks! Good analysis here.
Very nice speedrun. Some points though: Jumping heat: number of hexes but minimum of 3 every time. Success/Hit: roll exactly the number or above, not over. The +1 per 20dmg taken does not give you +2 if kicked with 20dmg, only +1 on in this case both rolls. Keep up the good work and have a sub. ;)
@@JohnDoe-hc7jf thanks!
As an initiative balancer, I like the following. Every time you roll, you get a bonus equal to the number of times your opponent has won initiative the whole game. Really tends to equalize the average outcome without making any one init roll too predictable.
@@TrailblazerBT that is a great one actually. Id definitely use it at the table!

@@A88mph good lord lol. Ya the missile boat meme lord over here lol...
@@TheManyVoicesVA It really is the most broken unit in AS. (Good thing it's very costly, especially with better skill pilots)
Might I suggest the Protomech Melee Weapon? Take everything we know and love about regular BattleMech Melee Weapons, and give it to a machine that will at most weigh 3/4ths of the Locust, and can't mount TSM. That's the ProtoMech Melee Weapon, and it is not very good. On the other hand, the ProtoMech Quad Melee System and Electric Discharge ProtoMech Armor are both scary. PQMS + EDPA puts the Basilisk Quad B on par with the regular Basilisk Quad, which has ten rounds of SRM-4 ammo.
I haven't looked much into protos tbh. I have faced them a couple times and they seem pretty ok. Nothing to write home about. A little over costed. I wasn't even aware they could make melee attacks tbh.
@@TheManyVoicesVA If you think they're overcosted, the other person wasn't using them right. Their tactics aren't so much Mini-Mechs as they are massive, speedy, battle armor.
Love it! Alphastrike being the twin system to the lesser known Battleforce game (where the alpha strike stats originated) getting a computer game is way over due. If there was a way to couple your system with the strategic Battleforce game, then players can finally do larger scale games. ie, your battleboard could represent 1 hex on a strategic Battleforce map.
used to love that about BF2, running planitary assault scenarios and such!
For online play with alpha strike there is a great TTS mod
TTS is amazing but not everyone uses it. I really should get it at some point tho haha.
LRT-20. It's a lot of tonnage for a weapon that might never get a chance to fire
@@alecciarosewater7438 i feel like very specific weapons like that are like... very good *when you need them* just like UMU. U want torps on a UMU mech but basically nothing else lol.
@@TheManyVoicesVA Yes but 10 tons + ammo on a single weapon in an environment where crits are more brutal? As opposed to two LRT-10s that can be put in different locations?
I dont get why would anyone play with floating criticals. Rolling a 2 is the same as rolling a 12 - extremely rare and lucky. So why would you be punished for rolling a 2, by making another roll for location, but not punished for rolling a 12? Both of them can lead to the mech being destroyed. Also it makes ballistic weapons even worse by allowing a random TAC ammo crit.
@@MARiNZ0 I mean... depending on the mech, rolling a side torso might be *worse* if it has ammo. It isn't really a punishment IMO. I honestly just feel it's odd that it basically always goes CT if you get a TAC from the front, when otherwise hits go anywhere.
That looks fantastic. Fan Battletech game reaches 2010's graphics 😊

The perfect usecase for the AC20 urbanmech is a garrison defense with level 2 high walls I fielded one on double blind in a campaign game and it killed the main character... In an alternative timeline where they didn't have edge because protagonist syndrome For that case specifically, yeah it serves a purpose. Otherwise, not so much Though the LB10X urbanmech serves a niche in being the cheapest way to get an LB10X on the field. @@Andrewlik hahaha the urbie is pretty cheap. That is basically its only advantage. A slightly mobile turret...
My favorite pre-invasion non-lostech weapon is the SRM 6. Not as efficient as the classic medium laser, but able to put out a massive amount of damage per turn, enough so that a pair of them beats the AC20. Also worth noting that a pair of SMR 6 can deal (potentially) 24 damage for only 8 heat, while medium lasers would deal 25 damage for 15 heat. It's just my all around favorite high damage support weapon.
@@kenalbus SRM 6 is pretty decent. It definitely isn't as powerful as an AC20 imo but 2 of them weigh less than half an AC20, and have comparable heat. The utility of inferno ammo is also fantastic. SRMs are definitely quite good imo.

Of course we need a balanced list-that’s why there are so many hunchback variants. Praise be to the 4G and the 4P. Blessed are the 4J, the 4SP, and even the 4N. Though the 4N exists only as a walking smoke LRM cover for the remainder of the Lance. Big fan of optimized vehicles to fill in gaps. I love the Gauss HBK as much as the next guy, but that’s one fewer HBK punching someone. Let the tankers deliver the Gauss rounds. And if you’re playing late enough to have IS light engines, you also have every way of avoiding Ammo explosions you could want. So now the Hunchback swarm is fast and even more survivable than in 3025.

9:00 Off the top of my head a comparable IS unit is Kurita's Sabaku Kaze hovertank. 136 armor points, 9/14 move. 4 Meds and 2 Small lasers in the turret. SRM4 packs mounted front and rear.
@@cargo_vroom9729 i love the Sabaku Kaze. It is a really mean little hover tank. Hover tanks in general are very good IMO. Maybe not as good as VTOLs, but still solid.
Big issue with MASC is that the calculations for BV use the max possible movement modifier to determine a BV multiplier for both Offensive *and* Defensive values. And as pointed out, the BV treats MASC as always running. The same issue, incidentally, applies to UAC weapon BV as well This is why I *really* like the optional rule to start MASC rolls on 1+ rather than 3+.
I think that would be more reasonable. That way you can use it for a couple turns in a row without major risk.
Maybe I’m out sync but I thought splash damage applied to ppc. Like missiles damage is broken down in 5 pt clusters. I may have read a rule incorrectly.
@@donbrewer2520 nope. 10 point damage chunk to a single spot.
Did anyone else get a "3D" Effect on the first 40 seconds? I thought I was trippin!
@@Drendle87 lol it's definitely not :p
@@TheManyVoicesVA I know it isn't but if you look at the bottom red text without looking at the rest of the top it just kinda looks like it's floating. I'm not on anything lol... it's really weird
Yeah the RAC rule came out years after the ultra autocannon rule and you can tell. I always house rule that it works like RACs.
@@Ruggedtoaster there's no reason not to imo haha.
@ right?
I'm used to Clan ER-PPC's, so heat isn't as much of a problem compared to damage output, but BV is doubled. Regular PPC's allow for a similar playstyle when comparing the drawbacks of IS ER-PPC's.
@@mando_dablord2646 100%! I am a PPC enjoyer. But the ERPPC is just so expensive and hard to run...
Looking at modern BT weapons, it's clear that the game is never going to introduce weapons that make the standard PPC irrelevant. Like even the Clan ERPPC and LPL are the same 1:1 heat for damage, and you can even out their advantages with spacing and TN optimization
@@jonbezeau3124 well the LPL is super efficient for a number of reasons. The long and short range are less than an ERPPC, but has the same 14 medium range. The -2 TH is very efficient on pulse lasers since it only taxes that weapon, not the whole mech cost like gunnery does. The clan LPL is better than a PPC imo. But not by *that* much.
@TheManyVoicesVA Clan LPL is awesome, but is less awesome if you're looking at really low mutual TNs against mechs firing regular old PPCs... if they only need 6+, the to-hit bonus isn't helping you much.
@@jonbezeau3124 the difference between 6s to hit and 4s to hit is *significant* lol. I cant tell you how many times ive failed a 4 TH even...
@@TheManyVoicesVA we've all offended the dice gods at some point, but 6+ is at least a 2/3 chance to hit... I don't like letting an parked Awesome have those odds on me by accident.
