Ghosts of Cape Horn

Have you ever thought on those who sailed back and forth during the first times? Around 300 hundred years before this pics were taken, spanish sailors sailed from Atlantic to Pacific and back as the only way between both sides of America. Comparatively small, wake, primitive and slow ships. The best at their times bur only a wooden shell when compared with those to come. The trade, for centuries, became a deadly routine schedule for all those brave men that seem to have been forgotten for history. I, as a spanish seaman, am proud of that heritage and feel the weight of history and tradition on my shoulders. Never forget those who opened the paths of the oceans for the world.

About 40 years ago I was introduced to a much older man over a few beers. I was eventually informed that he had sailed around Cape Horn on one the last two Windjammers that sailed out of Port Victoria STH Australia. Unfortunately I did not understand how significant this feat was and I did not buy him a beer and ask him what this adventure was like. RIP Ray!

I joined the Merchant Navy when I was 16, quit when I turned 23. Been round the Horn many times. One of the Cunarders, either the Mary or the Lizzie, brought a London Bus on board and secured it to one of the Decks. As she neared the horn they started selling tickets to sit on the bus as the ship steamed around the horn. The pitch was “Ride a London Bus Round the Horn”.

Please excuse my laughter, but on those ships there was no hot water other than for tea or coffee; no hot showers. In fact there was often no showers whatsoever on the 100+ days from South Australia to Europe.

Speaking of a "war on Cape Horn" while viewing the bones of the wrecked ships at the end reminds me of the North American opossums' "war on the automobile"... Not going well for the possums, and the cars didn't even notice there was a war. Not the metaphor I'd have gone with!

For, it is the best sea ballad of our times. And Lightfoot has passed already, so - the mankind needs to get to enjoy her ballad as well. I love Mr. Lightfoods work! May he rest in peace. <3 But, I am looking forward for Eliza's ballad to bet the publicity it deserves!

Question for you. I'm a very over educated professional auto, truck, heavy equipment, outboard & small engine mechanic. I often see snapped/corroded exhaust bolts/studs on just about anything automotive though especially certain brands of V8 pick-ups/SUVs. Dealerships remove the cylinder head to do these repairs, but I've been able to handle the majority of them without tearing the top of the engine apart providing there is *enough* room to get at said bolt or stud. Many times I'm simply able to weld a bolt to the broken bolt shaft, with the intense heat from welding combined with adding a hex head I can get on with a socket or even a wrench if it's *that* tight and remove the broken bolt/stud with ease. Unfortunately, that's not always going to work. I HATE drilling these as you have to be ultra careful doing so (you do not want to destroy a very expensive casting) but working carefully in these situations is often incredibly difficult as you cannot see exactly what you're doing in many cases once the drill is in there. Now, once an ACCURATE center punch hole is made, well then drilling is accurate and makes life easy. My question regarding these transfer punches is IF they're suitable for matching the diameter of the bolt OR inside diameter of the hole the bolt resides in (hole in exhaust manifold or even header in some cases) to create a 100% accurate hole. I understand I'd have to enlarge this with the proper tool (hardened center punch) but with even a "light" hole ought to be enough to catch the tip of a hardened center punch which will allow for relatively quick expansion of said hole with small to the largest size center punch available. Once I have that hole, my job is simplistic as all I have to worry about at that stage is keeping the drill perfectly aligned with the remnants of the broken bolt or stud. I know this is an older video but figured I'd take a shot asking. I became significantly disabled and had to sell my garage in '14 (disabled veteran) as issues that I developed/had happen to me while in the Army at the beginning of the 1st Gulf War in '90 developed to the degree I wasn't even able to stand or walk unassisted for a couple of years but now I'm able to get by with a cane. I LOVED my job and despite being VERY limited physically, I still love the field (mostly diagnostic/drivability work no one else in the area has the education/training/experience to handle (mostly as no one will PAY a professional technician/mechanic (whatever the hell they want to call us today! I'll stick with mechanic!) anywhere close to what they're worth and everyone who's worth 2-3x what they're being paid (top rate around here in OEM dealerships is a mere $25/hour.....I paid a incredibly gifted employee who started with me when he was 15 $30/hour way back in 2002!) leave the industry leaving a huge shortage of true professionals. That works for me as I have never stopped doing diagnostic work for over a dozen other garages and a number of OEM dealerships despite some of these jobs causing the substantial and sever chronic pain issues I live with to REALLY get "fired up" but when I'm making a MINIMUM of $75/hour CASH, it's worth it. Recently I was asked to see if I could extract the broken bolts/studs on a number of trucks and though these jobs SUCK, I feel as well as I'm ever going to when it is hot/humid out so I tackled 3 in the past few weeks but wanted to see what other tools might be available as getting a perfectly centered hole on the broken bolts/stud is CRITICAL and in many case brutally difficult to do. I'm figuring these transfer punches (a high-quality set of course, I don't rely on garbage Chinese tools!) ought to allow me to make the light but perfectly centered hole with the manifold still on then remove the manifold, enlarge the tiny hole with hardened center punches and then drill/extract the broken piece. What's your opinion on these tools in this instance? I thank you for your time! Kirk Bonanny.

Another mistake that can be made, is the front face shield. I don't remember if I put it in or it was installed at the factory. But the helmet would not function correctly, and I could not see my work while welding. Long story short, there is a protective film that must be removed off the shields. Works fine now. Even the guy at Harbor Freight was having the same problem. We both thought they were defective hoods.

Way late to this vid. Ex Navy - did two Cape of Good Hope transits and six equators. 😎 Nimitz 100,000 tons and 1100 feet; Texas & California @ 600 feet and about 12,000 tons each. Nuclear powered, state of the art ship & when we're rounding the cape the word was passed all non essentials turn into your bunk. Cool by me. I go 04 level and watch about a mile or so off our starboard beam Nimitz, pitching and taking spray on the flight deck (100 feet above the waterline). My boat just be a cork.😎 So, The sailors that did these things are just extraordinary. 🙂
