  • In this video I repair and improve a badly designed component, on what is mostly a good mower concept. It should be noted that this model of mower " Husqvarna LC 221a " although relativity new, is now DISCONTINUED. Some basic parts can still be found however come critical items are far and few. You can cross reference the pulleys part numbers to other brands to find what you need if no Husqvarna pulleys are available Ect.
    Disclaimer: This video is not intended as "The Be All and End All" of Repair and Fabrication. Rather a "real time" glimpse into an active Repair/Service with what tools, knowledge and motivation were available at the time. One should always take the time to research and verify information presented to them before conclusion. We are human after all.

      I tried commenting but it disappeared. Thanks for the video. It helped. I was replacing the cable for the drive and because of your video discovered two bad pulleys. They were in the beginning stages of getting chewed up.

    Great presentation and insight on what to look for. Shout out to the previous comments that revealed other issues with this make/model. Thankfully it’s not my mower, but a friend’s that I’ll help him out.

      You're welcome. My rule of thumb is to search for name brand, new or used, and check that it still has parts availability before buying.

    Excellent work on that mower and very creative. I was going to suggest you send it to Husqvarna engineering but they know how to build it correctly and likely only settled on that design to save $ on front end. At one point in video, I thought you were going to weld the bracket to the mower but then saw you were way ahead of me on that one and also learned some welding tips from you.
    I came across this video because I am trying to find solution for why my TroyBilt self-propelled mower is so slow and have not found videos on TB mowers that directly address issue. I have new belt, tension on belt is as far as it can go and there is no issue with gears on wheels. I am coming to conclusion that perhaps internal parts of transmission just wear out'
    In any event, great work and I will check out more of your videos. Love it in Maine this time of year as heat in TX is .... well it is TX.

      Right on, this time of year is most welcome after a long winter. I've had the same thing suggested and you're right, they likely "know" what they're doing.
      Not knowing the condition of your mower, one thing you could possibly try is to increase the engine rpm. That would give a little more Inertia to the blade and increase the wheel speed. I did that with the very mower in this video, the stock rpm was weak. Glad you got something out of the video. Thanks for watching!

    DISGUSTED that Husqvarna not only designed, built & MARKETED this atrocity, Which CLEARLY had a major design flaw (or more than one) I know the realities all to well, for a company I have spent over 5K in 1 season with (I have a tree cutting business & realize this mower isin't a commercial mower) That being said; This mower is a complete P.O.S. That with a 40 cent piece of plastic added to "protect" the pulley system, At LEAST wouldn't have been a complete NIGHTMARE & utter failure! Sad that a company I once held in high regard, didin't offer a recall or really anything to the 1,000's of people who experienced imminent failure. Thanks for the video. I have the tools & know how; I just don't feel I should have to re-engineer a product I bought mainly because of the name on it & the distinct orange color. I appreciate your guidance; HUSQVARNA should send you (Myself & everyone else who has had issues due to a poor design) a check! (It won't happen but ethically should)

      Thank you! I agree. Sure one can shop around, however It's unfortunate that so many company's have taken the "quantity over quality".. "planned obsolescence" approach and continue to produce junk products, rather than sold reliable products. I'm used to modifying and repairing tools and equipment, yet sometimes you go to look for parts and you find out they're Unavailable/Discontinued. You shake your head and say "what were they thinking!"... Wastefulness, Apathy, Incompetence and Complacency is truly taking over Pride in this world.

      I have this mower also and it's still under warranty. After putting it in two different husqvarna authorized repair shops and it still not working properly... I installed a fishing weight on the cable at the drive engagement system under the deck to take up the excess cable.

    Thanks for this. This is the third video I have looked at for this model and the only one that actually matches the mower I am working on. I am replacing the drive cable. I cannot get one that matches the original. That is one that had a tensioner in the middle of the cable that allowed water in to rot the cable. It broke. The new cable has a smaller fitting than the original where it mounts to the deck. My plan is to drill a new hole and plug the old one.
    Thanks for the tips on the pully system. Since I have the undercovers off I will take a harder look at this either to clean up or replace what is there. You may have convinced me to finally buy a welder.

    I own 2 of the LC221A 's. almost 3 years of hard use on both. 1 belt on just the one. Design seems fine to me.
    I do wish they had a plastic shroud around the belt. ---- 8 wheels a turnin' ! Mower equipment is always being changed. Discontinued is just a term.

    • @brerrabbit9668
      @brerrabbit9668 3 года назад

      They do have a plastic shroud under the mower to protect the pulleys and belt. The problem is the cable isn't adjustable. You pull the lever and that's all that can happen. I took mine to a Husqvarna authorized repair shop and they replaced the cable assembly. It still didn't work. This is actually the second shop I have taken too. The solution I found is to pull the cable down out of the wire spring hook that connects it to the drive engagement system and install a fishing weight on the cable. This takes up the extra cable length and engages the drive system properly. My mower is under warranty, but what good is that when husqvarna doesn't care if it's fixed or not

    If you own a self propelled lawnmower you have to expect replacing parts. My front wheel drive husky requires ocassional replacement of the drive belt an the wheels. I'm sure the plastic used for the wheels is designed to require replacement

  • @1Half1
    @1Half1 2 года назад +1

    I've replaced the belt 3 times and the pulleys twice, besides the pulleys being poorly made, the real culprit is the dirt and debris that clog both front and rear drive housings! I'm going to make a cover next! Just a poor design!

  • @johnmills7199

    Wow those pulley's sure were worn out. I'm surprised the belt still turned the blade. The AWD was not working for a minute. A little maintenance can go a long way. Just saying

    These are very overrated mowers and they are only good for maybe two seasons and 100 bucks in parts plus labor
    Kinda sickening how they collect grass in the belt and idealers
