Is Mobile Lidar any Good for VFX? - Polycam and Syntheyes
In this video we are going to take a look at the lidar capabilities on the IPhone 16 Pro and wether it's good enough for VFX work. And a basic workflow using Polycam, Blender, Syntheyes and Resolve Fusion. First we will use Polycam to do our scan, although you could probably use other apps. Then we bring it into Blender where we will re-scale and position our scan to the origin.
When we are done we will export our model to use in Syntheyes for 3D Tracking. Using the model to create seed points on the mesh will allow us to use the model to help in our solve. After we are get our accurate camera solve we will export out the camera to DaVinci Resolve Fusion where will set up a test render to ...

This is a 3 years old video and still one of the best on the topic. Thank you for taking time and explaining all the details.
You're very welcome!
I am watching again this great tutorial but I am wonderinfg how you use the locators for set up a card in 3D space as you say. :) Thx to tell me if you have some free time for that.
One way to do it is manually line it up in 3d, you could set the pivot to one corner than copy the locator position and paste it to get you started. But I would suggest you can check out @ShadowMakerSdR video here: ruclips.net/video/A99rXztTaqU/видео.htmlfeature=shared He made a macro that's pretty cool and can help you do this pretty quick. There is a link under his video on where to get it. Hopefully that helps.🙂
@prophetless Thank you so much, I will check that, you are the guru of tracking and I give your channel to anyone who wants to learn that deeply.! Thank
I genuinely cannot get over how good of a video this is. Watched the whole thing and it felt like 30 mins. Thank you
You're welcome! and thanks!
when I use camera tracking node on my video and track the 3d points when I press solve, it's always more then 5.0 or something, when I delete picked dots then I don't have enough points to do solve, why it's happening. I'm taking videos with my iphone 15 pro max, and the reason is maybe little fast rotations ?
You can add more trackers or it may be that your tracking a shot that Fusion can't handle. Fusion tracker is good but you may need a dedicated tracker for more difficult shots.
What a great tutorial, probably the best tracking lesson out there. Thanks mate!
Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you found it helpful.
U are great bro! I learn a lot with ur contents! Tkx u!
I appreciate that! Thanks!
Question, Is there also a way to move the pivot point for the merge or transform nodes? I can't find anything about it anywhere.
Transform has a pivot, in the merge you can use a modifier
Thank you! Do you have similar tutorial for planar tracker?
You can check this one out or do a search on the channel there are a few that deal with the planar tracker: ruclips.net/video/90qy5eWChe8/видео.html
Which version of the sytheyes has to be used? And how to get blender python script 4.0 +
2024.5 or maybe the version before has the 4+ Blender script.
Hello Brian, can we sort of do this with a transform node ? (after we done a clean plate) Everytie I messed up, i have to manually reoffset the paint to align with the footage before after applying the tracker
Absolutely! Very common way to approach it is to use a transform with the animation on it before you do the paint. But if your like me sometimes I jump ahead and do the paint first and don't want to redo the paint so this is just another method you can use.
@@prophetless yeah I work on wire removal rightnow and I do paint on my # frame, add a timespeed at the same fr# to do my CP. Add my mask on my merge. Add a transform both my CP and my mask ; connect it to my tracker offset but it is never on the right place by itself. I have to recenter both with and offset and then it's all good and tracks nicely. I think I'm wrong somewhere. I've seen lots of your video lately ! If you plan to make one on the different connect or modify option (like connect to path ; tracker steady position ; offset position ; unsteady position etc) it would by great ! Anyway, great content, that goes in depth and I think I will check lots of your stuff ! Happy christmas!
You know it's funny I thought I had a video on this very subject on the channel. It must be buried in one of the project based videos. It's certainly in my courses. You may want to take a look at this one which explains how tracking info is used in Fusion, if you haven't already seen it. It's about masks but applies to paint as well. ruclips.net/video/lukMkZr0t0I/видео.html Let me know if that helps answer your question. If not maybe I will add that to my list to make. Thanks and Merry Christmas to you too!
@@prophetless it's definitely helping, I thought of something like it was a reference frame problem or something but could figured out. I think the fact I'm making my mask before applying the transform might be the cause of some of my problem. I still have lots of work to do so I will try this out ! Thank you for your kind answers.
Very informative, thanks
You're welcome!
would you create syntheyes camera and object tracker simultanously and export to blender please? nice tuts! thanks
Thanks! You should be able to do the object tracking in Blender.
@@prophetless yea.. i already know to do that job inside blender, but sometime blender tracker can't did good on certain footage. that's why i need to know how to use other camera tracking apps.
I may do a video on that at some point. I would check out @trackvfx6760 they have some good videos on the subject. I also have courses on my website if you want a more formal approach.
@@prophetless wow nice.. i'll check your bio. thanks
very nice tutorial. I really like your channel. also bought two courses in your website, you teaching very well.
You welcome! I'm glad you are finding the courses helpful.
I sincerely appreciate the valuable information you've provided. Thank you!
You're welcome!
is this feature available in davinci resolve 19.1 free version, or do we need the paid studio version for this? btw amazing video man loved it
Thanks! I believe everything is in the free version except for the camera tracker. You could use Blender for the 3D tracking which I hear is pretty good.
Thank you
You're welcome
Goes to show solve error rate isn't everything. That ended up nearly 0.8 - but it was rock solid. Would be good to see some particles interact with the rocks.
I completely agree. I take it as more of a guide than an absolute. I'm curious about the particles myself. Looking froward to doing some more tests.
Really cool tutorial, thanks a lot 🤩🤩
You're welcome!🙂
I love it. Perfect timing. Thank you Brian!
You're welcome!
Very cool technique! I hadn't thought of using the mesh to help with tracking before.
Thanks! The technology is getting better all the time. A couple of years ago this wasn't working that well, but today I can see some really world use cases.
This a test workflow on the lidar capabilities of the IPhone scanner using Polycam. Then using the 3D scan to help with 3d tracking in Syntheyes to create a camera solve based on the lidar scan.
Hi and thanks for the video. Could you explain the difference between Steady and Unsteady operations and Invert Transform. My guess is Invert Transform has something to do with cancelling what Steady XXX does. I can't find in Reference Manual what these actually do. Cheers!
Thanks! I'll try to do a video on that soon.
Works for me in fusion, but in resolve render all savers is unclickable. Can’t find this in the manual or anywhere else.
Something must have changed in the latest update. I just checked and had the same issue. As a workaround I added a saver, not even connected to anything, then disabled it. Then the 'render all savers' is clickable and it will render out the FBX exporter.
Fantastic 👍🙏
Thank you very much for the recommendations. Picks of the Week are awesome.
You're welcome! There's so much great stuff out there!
I just have trouble watching a video from someone who didn't even know how to level his footage :P
"Nah, it looks that way cause you've only got one shoe on."😂
I have a drone fly over of a golf course that I am trying to track (3400 frames). It's taken quite a bit of time for two holes (like a good 12+ hours) and I have a few questions... 1. Should I be masking out all the trees that are causing some sort of parallax effect? 2. Should the solve be going to 99% and looping multiple times? 3. Is there any better way to guarantee a more efficient solve vs just waiting hours? I.e filtering tracks FIRST I really appreciate this tutorial though! It's making me feel like I can finally run Fusion like how I used to screw around in After Effects!
That's a pretty long shot to track so it will take a little more time than usual but 12 hours seems a little extreme. If it's easy enough to mask out the trees it sounds like it would help. Although you may find deleting the trackers faster. It really depends. Filtering the bad trackers before solving will help a lot. The Fusion camera tracker is pretty good but if it fails you may need to look into other options.
@@prophetless I've actually started quick masking a lot of the left and right of the shots (where there's trees and such). This has brought the solve time from 5 hours to 3 mins pretty much. Of course I'm making sure to adjust the initial track points to give me around 20,000 per shot, then filtering, then solving, then filtering again to refine. My success rate is much higher and I average a 0.3-0.5 solve error on first solve
sad that i have no idea how to do it from zero but nice video i assume for anyone that knows how to do the first stuff in the first place but not from zero
By far the most realistic steam using fusion I have seen. Thanks!
You're welcome! Thanks!
I had no idea this was even a thing. Thanks.
You're welcome!
How to change blending mod of image plane ? Plz reply
Inside the 3D plane under blend mode, choose the blend mode for which type of renderer you are using. If you are trying to blend in 3D I think the software renderer option might be the way to go. Of course that depends on what effect you are trying to achieve.
Thank you so much for the mention, and the nice words! Truly appreciated 🙏 I’ve found your tutorials insanely useful as I transitioned from After Effects to Fusion a few years ago.
You are so welcome! I love what you are doing on your channel. It always makes my day when people find the videos useful. Thanks!
Hi, Simon Ubsdell here. Thank you very much for the mention. I really appreciate it. Love your channel.
Thanks Simon! I really appreciate all you do as I know many others do. It is strange that many of those videos you put out over the past year I had never seen and I am subscribed to your channel! Especially since a common thread I see is people wanting more advanced Fusion tutorials.

Hey Guys, somehow the default export to blender does not work. Do I need to specify the version of blender and how would I have to set it upß Thank you
I just checked with Blender 4.2.3 and latest Syntheyes and the defaults are working as expected. There is an option to change the versions in the export if you are using an early version of Blender. What versions are you using?
@@prophetless 4.2..the default path simply does not work. It doesnt even open blender. Could you somehow provide a picture/script how you referenced your version of blender? Mine is: C:\Program Files\Blender Foundation\Blender\blender.exe
In the Blender Python Settings when you export. Put that file path in the Blender application box. So Syntheyes knows where to look.
@@prophetless Got it. Thanx
