Канада
Добавлен 21 окт 2023
Hi! We're Jon and Linda - or more informally, Bingo (Bing-go) and Binew (Bee-new)!
Linda is a food-lover, and bubble tea enthusiast. She will go anywhere so long as there is delicious food involved, and she has transformed Jon into a fellow foodie.
Jon is an explorer-at-heart with an insatiable urge to find out what’s at the end of every street. He is often found tagging Google Maps with new areas to explore, and bringing Linda along on random adventures.
Together, we love to get to know a city on foot and on a budget, while trying new foods along the way.
And that’s pretty much what you’re going to find in our videos!
We hope you choose to join us in our culinary adventures!

The coffee shops that sell drinks are usually separate vendors with the food stalls, which is why they usually (forcefully) wants you to order at least a drink if you're eating in since they own the place and that's the only way they could get an income (aside from getting rentals). Although as a local i hate this culture, but sometimes it's understandable too.

About your drink... I can totally understand your confusion & frustration! Let me walk you through the "history" of it. Used to be our kopi or teh were mixed with condensed milk AND sugar thus making them super sweet. Over the years when Malaysians were getting more health conscious, partly due to high cases of diabetes, we started to ask for "kurang manis" (meaning less sweet), so the vendors these days reduce the sweetness of your drinks by cutting the sugar & condensed milk but add some evaporated milk to maintain the consistency. That's why at some stalls, they will ask you your preferred "sweetness", just tell them you want "normal" & they will know what to do...😄
@@smleong2212 Thank you for taking the time to explain all of this to us! It makes a lot of sense and we will know how to ask for drinks next time! 😅

It's good to have your drink by your side while you're enjoying your meal because you never know if you were to choke on your food or something. Also, you could've bitten on a super hot chilli and you need some water to tone it down. Make sense, isn't it?

In Penang, it becomes a MUST to order drinks from the shop operator or "table owners" in street hawker area. If you refuse to order, then you have to pay RM0.50 to RM1.00 for using the shop's table. Where as at the street hawker place, the "table owner" out right chase you off. It's been a practice for a long time which as Malaysian from KL, I find very annoying & unwelcoming.
@@smleong2212 We heard about the tables at street hawkers and got nervous to try them out because of this! 😓
What is all the fuss with compulsory drinks orders? Isn't it just common sense to eat & drink together?? How do you flush down your food without ordering any drinks? Choking it down I guess?👇🤔 Or just Stingy much? I have lived many many years in KL & also growing up when eating out with my parents since child we have always ordered drinks to go with any food - regardless it's in a real restaurants or outdoor street vendors too! & For god sake Malaysia weather is so hot so who doesn't need more icy cold drinks anyway?? Now I am living abroad in Europe & I see here at EVERY RESTAURANT in EVERY COUNTRY I have been to EVERYONE ALSO always order drinks with their food so Penang is not setting any unprecedented rules ok! Just stay at home & cook if you don't even want to pay 2.50 for a simple drinks out!
@@marcusgoh73 We believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Some people do not like this rule, and others have no issues with it. Same with preferences for drinks with meals or drinks after meals. For us, we prefer drinks after our meals (we know this isn’t the norm!) but we also have no issues getting drinks during, like we did in the video. We hope you can see both sides from a place of understanding. Stay well!
@@BingoandBinew Well I am seeing both sides from a place of understanding because those street vendors are facing hardships with high inflation nowadays & I was referring to those Malaysians who aren't willing to pay 0.50 USD for drinks because they just want to sit there occupying the seats without consumption. As other viewer has commented - those kopitiam are run by the drinks vendor who rented out the individual stalls to food hawkers so the drinks are their main source of incomes. I have faced with much harsher treatments in Japan & Hongkong so trust me when I say Penang is not unprecedented at all in doing such logical thing - ordering drinks with your food. All the restaurants in Europe always ask you to put through orders of your drinks even prior to taking orders for food!
@@marcusgoh73 We appreciate you elaborating, the extra insight is helpful. There are many countries we have also visited where drinks are required, every person has to order a main dish, etc. It changes from place to place.
